+ Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/DhDt9.jpg) Founded in 2011, Collegiate E-Sports aims to foster intercollegiate competition amongst schools in North America. Our first event, the Collegiate E-Sports Invitational, consists of a Starcraft 2 tournament featuring some of the best schools across the United States and Canada. The prize pool for this event is $5000 from the help of our two major sponsors, NOS Energy Drink and Major League Gaming. For future events, we intend on using input from participants and monitoring trends in gaming to incorporate more games in the future. ![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/IxeWp.jpg) April 9th, 2011 from 8AM-12AM EST. ![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/jCm23.jpg) The first event hosted by the Collegiate E-Sports Series will be a BYOC intercollegiate LAN in Indianapolis, IN. Double racing (where players select the same race) is NOT allowed; however, a team to choose to play, for example, Terran and Random. Each player from Set 1, Set 2, Set 3, and Set 4 can be re-used in the latter sets; however a player may only play in two games per match. If a team chooses to re-use 3 players, one of the players must come from Set 4 (2v2). Both players from Set 4 can be re-used. The team first to achieve 4 set wins will win the match. The map selection for each round will be selected by the tournament administrators at the event. Teams will be required to submit a line up prior to each match in a blind format -- meaning you will not be able to see your opponents selection. When both teams have submitted their line ups by selecting a player and a race for each position, then the lineups will be revealed and there will be no substitutions allowed after submission. No observers other than the casters or referees are allowed to be in the game and players must set their online status to "Busy." There can be no form of communications between players in game and players spectating (ie verbal communications, hand signals, etc). The only exception is having the 2v2 team communicate. In that case will we set up a VOIP program such as Ventrilo for those teams. In the case of disconnections, chat violations, and other unpredictable circumstances, a referee will be assigned on the case and rulings will be determined on a case by case basis. ![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/ZOwlN.jpg) There are no registration fees or sign up costs for this event, in fact $100.00 will be paid to the coordinators directly at the event for traveling down to the event (we hope it helps travel costs). For competitors, all players for each team will receive free custom shirts with their university’s name. The event will be streamed on a dedicated Internet line with professional video production teams. All teams will have a personal liaison for the event that will help direct the team to the proper locations. Food will be available including products from Coca-Cola, dinner, open snack bar, and as much NOS Energy Drink you can handle. There will be a BYOC competition area for players to set up and get organized. During non-match times, there will be NOS Gaming Stations (equipped with televisions and gaming systems) for the players to enjoy. ![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/XfPnA.jpg) This event is free for spectators to attend. If you are coming in support of a particular team, please let us know and we can get you a free team t-shirt as well. There will be a professional stream available for the duration of the event. Along with watching the games live as they progress, spectators will have same free access to all of the food and the console gaming stations (see above). ![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/7Zg9F.jpg) There is additional information on our website. Otherwise, email admin@cesleague.com or post in this thread with questions or concerns.

I really hesitate to think that inter-collegiate competition can work in a LAN format. My CSL team was invited to this, but I don't see how we can afford to fly out as a team for this.
Also, does this have the sanctioning of the CSL? Seems like you're encroaching on their territory here, and you most definitely used their resources to contact people about this event.

1. We already have teams registered and confirmed to come! 2. Yes, this is CSL sanctioned. We have been working closely with them.

I'm glad to see that MLG is getting involved with smaller events like this it. It's nice to see the big boys working with some of the smaller organizations.
Really shows that they're interested in helping the community.
The event itself looks pretty cool too. I go to a smaller school, so I don't think I'd be able to field a team :[[ Regardless, I'll definitely be tuning in.

Well, if there is a possibility of fielding a team in time let us know. It doesn't hurt to apply just in case and if you have any questions about the event feel free to ask.

For all teams that have registered, please expect phone calls this week!
|
Ahhh my school was invited as well but we couldn't go due to travel costs =( Looks amazing though, can't wait to see the announced teams.
|
Yeah, we are very fortunate for having MLG as a sponsor. We plan on having passes for MLG Columbus for the winning teams.
|
We've been working with CES on this , and we think the event is going to be awesome

Confirmed schools: be sure to email us with your final lineup.

sucks our team didnt get invited, #2 in our division, and we are closer than a lot of other schools invited, silly, just silly.

Nice prize pool, seems like a good tournament.

Dang. If only it was closer home! =(
GL To the participating teams.

very cool to see Nos and MLG sponsor something like this. Sounds like a great tournament series.
I'll be in Indy that weekend, perhaps I'll stop by and check it out if I have time.
P.S. Gee, thanks, MLG, give us the minor league event in the midwest, and let the other regions have all the fun at the main events
|
Yay, I'll be going to this one :D

|
I wish I was in the states so bad right now T_T
edit: I can't keep up with all the tournaments either haha.. Need to create a calender of all the tournaments I want to watch Can't wait to see the results of this one and try NoS energy drink~

No problem. We just won't ever invite Dalhousie!

This looks so good. Now I'm sad my school is so bad at StarCraft T_T
|
This blows my mind a little with how cool it is. My school doesn't have a starcraft team as far as i know, but there definitely could be one. I'm going to Utah State University, so it would be pretty unrealistic for me to attend this event, but I will certainly watch the stream. College Starcraft competitions are the way to get starcraft, and therefore e-sports more into the mainstream in the United States. I hope the tournament rocks the house, I hope you get more sponsors, and most importantly I hope there is another collegiate invitational closer to the west coast ^ ^.

|
Man I'm totally interested but I don't know if anyone in WSU (wichita state) actually play starcraft haha.

Thanks! Yeah, we feel for the west coast. There is definitely a good possibility of one being in the future closer to the west coast to allow the plethora of Cal schools to play in as well.

This is going to be an awesome step forward for college E-SPORTS. Lans and tournaments hosted by individual colleges are great, but with a team focus at a live event this will cross the huge gap between individual gamers who happen to be in school and the college team focus of CSL that is strictly online. Thanks to the great guys putting this together with NOS and MLG behind them, I am sure this is going to be an incredible event, something gaming clubs across the country can point to for support from their schools. Why shouldn't gaming be a school supported club sport? This is the first step down that path.
|
How does the format work? It says 5-8 players as a team, does that mean that 5 players can fill all 7 games? or do you need 8 unique players? Oo
|
Looking forward to coming if everything on our end words out! Thanks for hosting this tournament you've got us all seriously psyched.

The format is 1v1, 1v1, 1v1, 2v2, 1v1, 1v1, then 1v1 (Ace). Yes, you can reuse players. The first four matches (Three 1v1s and One 2v2) are all unique players (no reusing players). The last three 1v1s, you can reuse any of the first five players again a maximum of one more time or use a new, unique player that has not played a match yet in the BO7. We will ask for rosters to be submitted prior to the event showing how many players are going to be competing. The submitted roster will be final before the start of the tournament, no substitutions can be made in the middle of the event.
Sorry, hopefully that clears some things up.

Whether or not this was sanctioned by the CSL matter why? The CSL owns the collegiate starcraft scene? All is required that they don't have the same name or logo.
Is it better to have the CSL support? Yes. Is it required to get the CSL's permission? No. Can I go on the CSL website and use the freely given information regarding players to contact players? Yes.
|
The only shame here is that this is on such short notice. My team is definitely interested, but it will be difficult for us to arrange travel plans on such short notice.
I hope that other teams do not have the same difficulties.

Talked to the NOS representative, try calling the hotel and giving them the promo code when you place a reservation for that weekend.

Many teams are looking into the alternative transportation such as rental cars, buses, or trains. Can I ask where your team is from?

New York City. Seems flying from the metro area beats out land transportation in terms of cost per time traveled IMO. Trains/buses are ~18-20 H transit time, rental car maybe 14? Any suggestions?

This all depends on what you have more of, do you have more money or more time? If you've got time and love SC2, you might have to suffer the longer ride to the event.
Personally I think it's worth it and everyone has to make that choice for themselves.
|
Is there still room for more teams and if so did your team have to compete in the league to be eligible for this tournament. There is no team currently at my school but we are really close to Indy and there are a bunch of people who play SC2 here. We would really like to go to this if we could.

We are going to try to accommodate for as many teams as possible so I would recommend applying since we are trying to expand to more schools

Teams did not have to compete in any prior league to be eligible either.

Just curious, do you remember when your team received the invite?
|
Yeah, it seems the email came in at 4:39 am on March 17th. We made sure to make the decision to go quickly so we put in our application as soon as possible.
|
Sorry if this has been asked or answered before, but will there be a rule restricting players of the same race from playing in the 2v2?
|
To clarify, yes those emails were sent out because we thought your school was an exceptional candidate to compete in the event. Over the last week, spots filled up ridiculously quick so there were around a dozen schools that we had to turn away due to lack of extra discounted hotel rooms, spots, funds, and duration of the event.
Originally, the application was private and closed to only select schools about a month ago, but for a over a week the application has been public and we encouraged every team to apply because we did not know what kind of turnout we would receive for this kind of event and wanted as many teams to be able to come as possible. We once again emailed the best remaining schools to "invite" them to apply because we felt they were the best of the schools remaining that were within reasonable distance from the venue and it would be unfortunate to have them not realize that this event was going on even though they were genuinely interested in participating. Due to the outstanding response in the TL community, we expanded the team number by four to a total of 24 teams to allow as many schools as possible to come. It is unfortunate that we had to turn schools away from being accepted to the event, we tried to make this as fair as possible to every school to allow them sufficient time to apply and make travel and lodging arrangements to the event.

UCR really wants to go but we just cant get there :[

Two very different things. Invite is where you invite, we accept, and then you say ok cool see you here, not, oh sorry you're not actually "invited" per se lol.
As we have stated in the email sent out applications were decided on a first come first serve basis. We only had a few remaining spots and we stressed the time urgency. All emails were sent out in waves so all the emails that were sent out were sent simultaneously. Think about it from an event organizer's perspective, we can't just invite 24 teams and expect to get 24 replies. In fact our reply rate is much closer to 5%. The only possible way we can do this is invite teams to apply.
With that being said, if you guys are still interested and are willing to prove your case to our event sponsors (remember, we are providing $100.00 to each team), I will gladly connect you guys! =]
|
If your team is interested in participating in this event, please fill out the attached application. Since the event is only a few weeks away, we ask you to fill out the application and/or email us as soon as possible to ensure your spot in the applicant pool. The accepted schools will be notified shortly once all schools have had a fair chance to apply to the event. Acceptance will partially be determined on a first-come first-serve basis, so it is definitely in your interest to apply as soon as possible.
This is a direct quote from the email sent to your team and many others. As stated above, teams needed to complete the application to be included in the applicant pool, and it was determined on a first-come first-serve basis. It would be impractical to invite 24 teams and expect all 24 to be able to come. We have invited many schools; only few were able to attend. The "congratulatory tone" was meant to commend your team's accomplishments thus far, also as stated in the email. Though the application was posted publicly, several schools were asked directly to apply, as we felt they would be great candidates for our event.
We apologize for any misunderstandings. We plan on hosting similar events in the future as well as creating an online league, so rest assured there is always another chance for your school.

Colleges in America, for the most part, can't support E-sports as legitimate sports because they violate NCAA Violations. Student athletes cannot be paid / compensated / win prizes etc. and all Starcraft and other E-sports tournaments violate these rules.

In all likelihood eSports would never really be considered being included in NCAA rules, since, even though it is very much a legitimate competition for students, it is hard to consider it athletic. As such, I would envision an entirely separate governing body eventually existing, making it much easier to get backing from schools.
Also, I know that I asked this earlier in the thread, but it looks like it must have been missed, (or I missed the response, :X) but, will there be a rule preventing double race teams in the 2v2?

We have a club poker team at our school which gets funding to travel, etc., no reason esports can't be a club sport either.
Also, double racing is not allowed for 2v2.

In all likelihood e-sports could be considered a club sport or something similar. Though club sports usually don't have live streams, thousands of dollars of prizes, and star-treatment haha.
There is a rule in place preventing 2v2 teams with double races. Sorry.

Well yes, it could be considered a club sport. Mostly I was just saying that there is no reason that the NCAA would ever be involved. (Thank god, lol.)
Its good to know double racing isn't allowed, thanks.

Can I ask what car rental services other teams are using? We're running into a lot of extra charges because our driver is only 20.

Any news on the map pool and/or when we will know about the map pool?

Map pool will be released soon, they will be different varying from round to round ,etc.

Hi there,
I am part of the UIUC CSL team and we recently submitted an application to attend the event. Is it already too late or can we still attend? We would really like to go and we've been coordinating cars and everything. I really don't want to disappoint my team, who are all really excited about attending.
Thank you!
|
Sent them an email about new apps, but I'm not sure, since the app link is gone from the site.

They decided the teams already last week, unfortunately.

Yes, we did. The only possibility of getting accepted as of now is if a team decides to drop; however, I am not sure how likely that is since all that are coming have already booked a room at the hotel or live close enough to not need a room. Sorry. We will post any updates if they come up regarding teams.

UPDATE: JP (itmeJP) is now confirmed to attend/cast the event on-site.
JP, TrueRedemption (TL writer) and CatsPajamas will all be casting live from Indianapolis at the venue as of now.
|
Remember, the event is free for all spectators. If you want to meet JP in the flesh come to Indy! more details on the website! cesleague.com

When looking at the map pool, I realized that the rules posted on the website might not be describing exactly what I was under the impression the rules would be.
Matches are Best of 7: Sequence of games will be: 1v1, 1v1, 1v1, 2v2, 1v1, 1v1, and a 1v1 ace match. The first five players must all be unique, and if 3 players are reused, at least one player from set 4 (2v2) must play in one of the rounds 5, 6, or 7.
There is nothing in these rules that prevents a player from playing in four sets (for example sets 1, 5, 6 and 7). I had assumed that players are not allowed to appear more than twice in the lineup, but these rules do not reflect that. Is it correct to assume a player will not be allowed to be in the lineup more than twice?

You are correct, a player can play in at max 2 games. Sorry about the confusion! We have an internal site for match submission which reflects all of the constraints.

I've gone through the thread and the site and haven't found anything talking about the bracket structure. Will there be seeding, and will it be single elimination?
Also, will the event be streamed, or will it only be viewable by the on-site spectators?
|
Yes, it will be casted by JP and CatsPajamas and streamed from our Justin.tv account. http://www.justin.tv/cesleague
We will be following this style of tournament format. We originally intended on double elimination, but are changing to this pool play style.

I'm excited to play in this event! Good luck to all the other teams there!
Are the brackets up? Also, who's the caster TrueRedemption? I couldn't find any videos of him, all that showed up was some choir.

He's a pretty good caster. He is a writer on TL and has casted for the DAS Keyboard Tournament along with the IU Lan. He specializes in Protoss cheeses and pretends to know the game (jk) .

Will the groups be random or seeded? Also, will 3 groups feed into one side of the bracket and 3 into the other as that picture may or may not suggest or will the teams from the same groups be spread out more to avoid rematches? And lastly, when will the groups be announced?
edit: The stream appears to be flagged as inappropriate for people under 18. Are you guys aware of that issue/is that gonna be fixed? I don't want people I link the stream to to get the wrong idea, lol. I think this got fixed. (At least its not showing for me anymore.)
|
1) We are not sure yet. 2) The teams advancing out into the Ro16 will be reseeded 3) Thursday is the plan on when it will be announced
|
What about the teams that don't make it out of their group into the round of 16? Ladder/spectate?
|
On April 05 2011 13:20 kathode wrote: 2) The teams advancing out into the Ro16 will be randomly seeded.
Totally random, or like, randomizing group winners as seeds 1-6, runners up as 7-12, etc? Obviously totally random could have 2 of the top teams facing off in the round of 16, even if they swept their groups, potentially robbing one of a higher finish. That scenario makes me think it would be strictly better to have at least some seeding going into the knockout stage. Please keep us updated on your decisions.
+ Show Spoiler [No longer relevant, see below] +edit: I would like to suggest this as a format solution: ![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/2T7a1.png) Where the group winners from groups A, B, and C would be randomly placed in the 3 spots labeled "1ABC", runners-up from groups A, B and C in "2ABC", winners from groups D, E and F in "1DEF, runners up in "2DEF", and the four best third place finishers being randomly placed in the spots labeled 3. This solution would avoid potential group rematches, award group winners with easier round of 16 matchups (at least avoiding other group winners), and maintain competitive symmetry. Moreover, the drawing for which groups are placed where in the bracket could occur before the event takes place, allowing for smoother flow on the day of the event.

We are trying to come up with some alternative things teams can do. One idea was a 8 person FFA for all knocked out teams. Each college would appoint one player to play. .

After group play, teams will be reseeded according to the pool play results before entering the 16 man single elimination stage. Teams with the best set records and matches will be seeded at the top. Tie breakers for the round of 16 include ladder seeding (used to determine pool groups), etc. In an absolutely indeterminable tie breaker (nearly impossible) an "ace" match will be played between the tied teams' best players.

Just a question, is CES using the Terminus RE from GSTL (the one with backrocks at the third) or the TSL/GSL one?

Were this random? How did you randomly select them if so? hat+paper?

Kinky: TSL Terminus RE
spbelky: Actually we seeded the teams based on top 5 players ladder points last season, with a -1000 point penalty per division below masters league. So perhaps not a perfect seeding system, but considering the depth necessary in a Bo7 format it seemed like a fairly functional one.

So is the first listed team in each group the highest seed?
Pity MSU landed in same group as Indiana.

Even though many of these players are unknown, they are predominantly masters level players so all matches should be really exciting.

We are going to get around to cutting up the recording into each individual match so everyone can find theirs easier. May take a while but it will be done ASAP.

Guys, I gotta say, this was an absolutely amazingly well organized tournament. I wanna say "Thank You" to the organizers, as well as the sponsors for the event. From my view, everything seemed to go flawlessly, although I'm sure that a million things went wrong and were fixed quickly over the course of the day.
EcstatiC is right, it was definitely worth the long drive. And I know several people who were reluctant to go along, decided not to come with us, and now regret that decision.
It was definitely a success, and I look forward to attending more of these in the future.

I use IE (Yeah I know it sucks, but it's what I like, and having your site inaccessible to ~40% of the popluation isn't really a good thing.). It didn't quite work in Firefox either, but my firefox is old. Worked fine in chrome.
