Hello fellow Perth Starcraft players! It's gone on for far too long that we've had no Starcraft II tournaments here in our quiet little city so a couple of avid Starcraft friends and I have undertaken the task and organised Perth's first SC2 tournament!
The tournament will be capped at 32 players This is due to venue restrictions more than anything, but I hope this doesn't discourage players for coming along and having a go
There will even be a booby prize for the highest placing bronze to gold level player So even if you don't feel you're the next Idra, Huk, or Jinro there's still some prizes up for grabs!
If there's any questions please don't hesitate to ask
I will check this thread regularly and respond to any queries or you can contact me on the email address listed on the poster.
I'll see you there!

There will be a lot of casual players coming and playing, which will not be familiar with standard tournament style map picking rules. So no, there will be a set list/order that the maps will be played in each round and I will do my best to make these as fair as possible for respective races. We are on a tight schedule and any delays because of confusions about map picking rules would be detrimental.

It is first come first served, however if you are travelling from outside of Perth I can make an exception and reserve a place for you. You must email me your full name and a contact number, and the reserved place will only be kept until 8:50am at which point your reservation will be canceled and your place given to the next person in line

There's a TV that will be streaming outside onto the street. There is very little room inside the venue for spectating and loitering, and it's very important that we keep it clear so competitors can move to and from their stations freely without disturbing others. (I'd be very pissed if someone was constantly brushing passed my chair whilst competing) I'm currently working on organising a decent PA system for casting the games, however it requires money that i frankly don't have as of writing.
On March 19 2011 23:35 Dhalphir wrote: Hey how will the prizes be distribued? winner takes it all or second/third/fourth get a piece?
70 / 20 / 10 % (Plus the booby prize)
|
Will definately try to make it down there to compete / or at least watch if theres no spots left.
edit: curious whats the map pool?
|
Still TBA atm, but im thinking XNC, meta, LT v2, Shakuras and scrap. All the typical decent blizz maps.
Considered the GSL maps but most people have no experience on them, it will probably be something ill save for the finals.
|
Will this be streaming to the big screen in the Murray Street Mall?
|
Haha, there's a TV that faces onto the street which will be streaming the matches. Will also be casting the semi-finals / finals for some added entertainment

Ahhh I have my 21st on that Saturday otherwise I would be keen to attend. Does anyone know if RF Lan are going to have a starcraft 2 comp when they have their next Lan at Curtin stadium.
|
Aww sounds awesome but i'm all the way in sydney! good luck in the tourney all!
|
if i wasnt working on that day i would check it out

I'll see if I can make it (not sure if I have am going to work or not that Saturday).
And I'd also like to know if we're allowed to veto the first maps (and then loser picks) or if it's some sort of set list?

Oh this is cool. I may come down and check it out.
|
I may make an attempt to come along to this, it sounds like alot of fun!
I have to make the trip from Mandurah though, so I really hope if I come I can get a spot...
|
do we need to pre-register or is it first come first served?

Might come down just to see if Perth actually has any talent...
|
wow... perth sc2 TL people... woooooo. we should all add each other for practice / lans etc
|
Holy crap! Something happening in Perth!
I'll definitely try and get there.
Is this at the really seedy net cafe next door to Taka's?

I live in Mandurah so I never attend Lans in Perth except RF Lan once every now and again. I'll most likely be at the next RF lan at Curtin stadium
|
Last RFLAN, I emailed the admins asking what the prize was, and they didn't respond. No point in me spending my time if it's not going to be worth my while.

G'day cunts!
I'll bring the goon. You bring the cuntz

Jesus, tell me about it, that place is so dirty and full of twelve year olds that I feel sick walking past it.
Hopefully I should be able to make it along with a friend, I'm not a very good player, only Plat on the US servers :\
|
Some guy actually got caught looking at kiddy porn a couple of years ago at that place next to takas. I do remember though every time i walked past it there was starcraft 2 gameplay videos on the monitor facing the sidewalk.Points for that.

I get the feeling some guy is just gonna mass marine and win the whole thing.
Or a Masters player will dominate.

What if the masters player doesn't dominate?

I'm just going because I love to play, not to just win or complain about imbalance.

I wonder actually how many other Masters players that come down will actually know how to cope with LAN atmosphere

RFlan prizes were a factual case, 1st place, 2nd place, SME power supply 1st place - TheOne 2nd place - Xavi
next rflan well be held at curtin, the majority of people playing sc2 at rf were just BSG, there was only around 5-6 people diamond/master

First SC2 RFLAN prize was the exact same fractal case so it'll probably the same next month... I'm using it right now :/

Great to see this going on in Perth, if someone goes to the effort to upload reps, stream or just post results that would be great.

How many players are we looking at? I'm beginning to worry that too many people will show up.

I'll be coming down to hopefully get a spot.
I assume if too many people show up this will encourage future events to be held more often?

I sure hope more events are planned if this works out, Perth has hardly anything going on in terms of e-sports, and I hope this is the first step.

Uh I think you mean, "Perth has hardly anything going on in terms of anything..."

ooo a perth tournament... I just looked up the place on the map and figured out where it was by it's position relative to myers ahahaha, was trying to recognise the place, looks easy to find : )
I haven't been playing too much lately but thinking about bringing a friend and going, if I don't end up going hope it goes well griefer, glad to see somebody doing something like this :D gl hf!

The place I'm organising this with is really keen to have future events, and has been so helpful accommodating this one that assuming people do turn up there will most definitely be another tournament. It's you guys that are going to be the real decider on whether or not I can continue to host bigger and better tournaments.
Don't worry too much about missing out on a spot. There will be a live stream running all throughout the tournament and shout casting after the first couple of rounds go through, plus all your friendly SC2 community to banter with and just generally talk shit

I just got back home after being told there are no spots. 32 slots and what 50 odd people? I'm disappointed I didn't get to play but it's awesome there is such a turnout.
Perhaps in future there should be a group stage with each group playing on a different day so there will be room and the network won't get destroyed like it appeared to be while I was there.
|
Yeah I just got home after the same thing too. While I was a little disapointed/annoyed that sign ups apparently started eairler than 8:45, it was pretty damn cool to see such a big turnout, and I don't really blame them for starting them early with so many people there.
Maybe it'll have to be 64 players next time?
|
There was really no reason that the tournament could not be extended to a 64 player tournament with the first round being a best of 1. It wouldn't have added a significant length to the tournament given that we didn't quite have 64 (quite a few randomly seeded byes would have been handed out), it would have increased revenue (there had to be at least 20+ people who didn't get in, thats a lot of sets of $15) and no one would have gone home annoyed.
|
Looked like they were having enough trouble running the 32 man tournament as it was so I don't blame them for not upping the numbers and introducing more complications (the seat switching that would be involved). All that matters is they learn from the experience and run it smoothly next time either with a multi-day event or with online qualifiers.
Also for everyone else a little disgruntled don't forget there is redflag lan in a month which just got a new larger venue and will definitely have a seat for you if you sign up soon. They even moved the sc2 tournament to a better timeslot at 1pm http://rflan.org/schedule/rflan-35-schedule.html
|
I didn't get a spot, how did it go?
|
On March 26 2011 11:33 Anzekay wrote:Maybe it'll have to be 64 players next time? Yeah I hope it is next time. But on that note they'd have to get a bigger venue, or just organise it so it works out. It would have to be longer too.
We need more events like RFLan.
Shame I didn't get a spot, didn't turn up early enough I suppose
|
Tourney is still going (4hrs overtime), sitting here waiting for the grand final to start. Sorry for all the people who missed out but we promise next time will be much better. :D
Honestly who would of thought we'd get 50+ people at a perth tourney?!

|
I guess the main problem I had was with the bracket itself, due to changing the bracket from a 32 to a 64 to accommodate 4 people, you effectively make it a 64 person double elimination with byes. There's no indication of progress, where we're up to, whether I have time to go to get lunch, etc, etc.
Otherwise, the single elimination losers bracket was a little weird (I know it was done for time, it's just preferable to have at least a Bo3). Finally, players should have been seeded, at least according to division. A lot of the better players in the tournament played each other round one, which reduces the chance a very enjoyable and tense finals series. See Tennis for example...
Otherwise, a pretty good deal for the first event, had a few games, did alright seeing as I haven't properly played since early January.
|
Definitely a good first tournament from the sounds of it, but also definitely some lessons to take away.
|
Update me guys!, hows it going apparently nobody on teamspeak and ascension gaming site is down.

Thanks for hosting this tournament!
Lots of technical issues but all learned lessons from the future.
And I learnt that terran vs terran is a BITCH when you're nervous. Hope to come to the next tournament and play with a bit more stability!
Grats to whoever won, I didn't get to stay around although I'm sure it would've been a cool final.
Also: Add me on RealID, josten_myburgh@hotmail.com. Was great to meet some of you guys at the tournament and I definitely didnt get the character codes of everyone I wanted character codes from, so make sure you contact me :D

Hey guys, its the host here!
I'd like to start by thanking all of those who turned up, ESPECIALLY those who didn't get a place. I'm very, very sorry I couldn't slot you in, bumping up the amount of players to 36 was a real stretch but I found it extremely hard to tell 20+ people just to leave and come again next time. As an avid gamer, and someone who wants the community to thrive it really affected me personally. By 1pm, I was running on 5 hours sleep with no breakfast, no lunch, no breaks, and a can of mother graciously brought to me by one of my amazing co hosts, Buff. I also would like to thank my dear friend Trav, for running the brackets and whipping people into their matches.
With the thanks out of the way, I'd like to take an aside and mention that the people running the venue were HORRIBLE. I turned up at 7:30am to help them set their shit up, and they still managed to fuck it up and cause the massive lag problem that plagued the first hour and a half due to them turning on their switches in the wrong order... Basically they have a single copy of starcraft running off of a 7200 rpm HDD which then streams out ALL of the game data to the computers on a line that's also shared with the internet. Also did i mention that line, which effectively is meant to replace a SATA2 connection on your mobo, is a 100/10 mb switch which runs 36 PCs on ultra settings? Well i did now. The manual graphics change on each machine was also not necessary. I'm actually quite tired of this rant so I'm going to tl;dr it and end on a happier note. The systems admin FORGOT he had a registry file with the settings for each game on it, notifying me 2:30 hours into the tourney. They bumped the price up without telling me. Gave no reimbursement for the time i spent helping them set up early, and the 1:30 hour delays. Never, ever, going to touch that place again. I recommend you stay far away and tell your friends likewise.
But, apart from wanting to puke for most of the day and arguing with management this was a great learning experience for me and from what i gathered people had a great time (especially the winner who walked away with a cool $200 ^^). Going to apologise for the single match losers bracket but adding more people + time constraints and major stress made me settle for that. For the next tournament, that will, DEFINATELY be occuring i will explore all options and venues to make sure those who want to play will be able to attend and play in a great environment. It will NOT be at citypoint.
This was made possible by you, the community, and I'd like to congratulate you all for showing your support in what will be the start of something awesome in our sleepy little town.
|
I'll be adding the bracket results with a list of the players leagues and races for any stat geeks out there who want to have a look at race distribution etc.
PS. There was a 6pool in the finals, diamond zerg vs masters random
|
Cheers for organising this all Griefer. I think it's amazing that there was so much interest for SC2 in Perth and despite the limitations of the venue I had a great time. I'll be at the next tournament if there is one for sure.
My gametag for those that asked is Nadir.554 :D
|
For all you SC2 aussies out there, don't forget to have a look at www.ascension-gaming.com, forum be found at www.ascension-gaming.com/forum. Just want to say thanks again, would have liked to stay but it ran later like u said and I had work...can't wait for the next one (as long as it's not there again... Good luck with organising the next one=)

Ever so tempted to start playing again and perhaps learning TvT from my American practice partners. Just have to find the time somewhere...
At least we've all learned a few lessons and it will start the ball rolling for everything.
|
Yo, blonde guy who was running the bracket here, I was the one yelling out your numbers and generally harassing you.
All the people who didn't manage to get a spot, I feel for you but take solace in the fact this means the potential for future larger scale tournaments is prominent. As Grief said the place running it was shit and he did the best he could with what he had to work with. More entrants would've been unreasonable given the time constraints put on us and the conditions. Without sounding like a pretentious faggot I am aware how tournaments and bracket numbers work, I realise Bo1 for losers isn't fun and seeding is preferred but it was very hectic today as it was. please try to keep in mind this was the first tournament and that means there's always going to be a great room for improvement,
Griefer did an amazing job given the circumstances and this was his first tournament. A huge thanks to him is in order for doing all he's done today and leading up to it to try and plant the seed of what promises to be a bright SC2 future for lil ol' Perth. I don't even play the game and I find it exciting. Another big thanks for everyone who came and were patient with us while we were sorting shit out and for listening to me and Grief when we barked orders at them, It's not fun to stand around outside on a hot day I know, but you guys (for the most part :p) were real good sports about it and didn't give us much trouble <3
I've got the bracket image here on my lappy, I've got to give it to Griefer and let him decode the thing because it's all using your assigned numbers, for now though I'll ove you the results (again only with your assigned number, so if you don't remember it just hold out :p)

First of all ... WE the management did told you that 3 hours is insufficient for a tourney , and we offer you a better price 5 hours for 10 dollars but you reject it and insist that the tourney can finish in 3hrs , and guess what it turn up the tourney start from 10.30 to 4.30 total 6 hrs . I did admit that we wasted your first 2 hours due to boot order incorrect and caused the switch running on Megabit status , this is accident technical issue , no one wants it to be happen , and i already done my job to recover it as soon can i can . Regarding the reimbursement for the time u spent helping me to setup the computer , is seriously nonsense , cause this is part of your job as a host to come to the venue early and check it out do testing , this is what a organizer have to do , cash doesnt means anything understand ? And i really impressed on your leadership but u seriously have to change your attitude especially talking and dealing with people , believe it or not , james is just joking with you , he already decide to make everything for 200 bucks , and guess what you rise your voice and talk nonsense especially your epic " i pay for the venue why should i help ? " make james piss off and rise his voice as well , to be honest i working for james for 2 years you are the first person who make him mad , bravo bro . Mind you , u are just hiring our pc , and i m just here to help you , you are not the one who pay my wages . I choose to help u just for sake of responsibility , i can actually go home playing my iPad 2 at 8.30am . Anyway our server is running on 2600 Sandybridge i7 with 12GB ram , raid0 twin Western digital VelociRaptor 500GB 10000rpm HDD and twin gigabit port . And our pc specs are 2.4GHZ C2D with 4GB of ram and 40 of our computer running on Geforce 9800GT and rest are 9600GT . Anyway good luck for your hunting ,

Sounds like more a case of tempers running high due to hot weather and a stressful situation more than any other serious problems. But as I wasn't there, no comment further.

Thanks to everyone who turned up. We are in discussions at the moment about another tournament in the future, and extending it to 64p with possible online group play offs at a bigger venue.
All in all, today was a great day whether you just came down to watch or lost in the first round. Sure there was some arguing and many hurdles, but it still was extremely fun.

yeah i didnt expect the perth sc2 community to be this good but i was definitely wrong and i hope the perth sc2 community will grow even more with these tournaments.

Well I will never have dealings with you after that terrible post. Regardless of whether or not Griefer did anything wrong the complete lack of grammar and your inability to form a sentance is laughable.
Hope the tourney was alright besides the computer errors. Would be interested in coming to one in the future griefer.

Had a good time at the event guys, even with all the waiting and crowded space. was a very good learning experience.

RFLan is coming up, it's a pretty big LAN party that should have an SC2 tournament. It happens once a season I believe.

Lot more Diamond and Masters than expected!

I need to get Masters on SEA too now instead of just NA so my 'resume' looks more impressive.

So I was wondering if anyone I played or who was a spectator/ref in any of the matches I was in had any replays (just the ones I was involved in). I'm asking because I've already checked the internet cafe we played in but unfortunately they don't have it anymore (no fault of theirs) and since I was too foolish to change the settings on my b.net account to save the replays onto my b.net account.. well obviously they weren't saved on there.
On a different note, I also had a great time at the event (but then I won so my opinion is rather bias). Have to say I was also very lucky because I was contestant #35 which I think makes me part of the 4 who got in thanks to the extension to the # of players. In regards to that and to the host/organizers of the event itself; Cheers

Sorry I missed it =( Looking forward to the next event though as I'll be there.
Was there any room for spectators???

Yeah I had a great time too and if you thought you were lucky, I was number 36 lol. Congratz on the win.

Need to hit the training room I will have my revenge on you Sanic! GGs to everyone I played :D Had a great time, although at the end of it I was really really sleepy and took a 5 hour nap when I went home :S. Also met a lot of people, who knew that so many people would turn up! Hopefully the next tourney will run more smoothly so there are no silly bo1 losers brackets... Thx Griefer for organising and everyone else that helped :D

How did that Bronze league guy manage to come 13th? Some sort of cheese strategy, or does his league rank belie his skill level?
|
hey man, just want to say that I highly recommend "GG" for the next tournament - its in northbridge right next to the state library of WA lots of room, great computers - would be a lot more comfortable for a tourney
|
He was ranked bronze on sea but plays custom games against plats / diamonds. (he was sitting next to me so we chatted a bit)
Pretty sure he 4gated every game as well.

Unfortunately we don't have the replays as the net cafe didn't allow any replays to be saved on computers at all due to the way their system was set up. I had no idea you could change your settings so that replays are saved to your Bnet account. If you have the spare time, could you please send me a PM explaining briefly how? Thanks

For the next event it's been suggested that we do a GSTL style team tournament, which I personally love the idea of. Feedback towards this suggestion would be appreciated.

I'm also loving this idea :D, this would be very entertaining to watch and to play haha. Would we have to set up our own teams or will it be all random??

My bad, don't think you can save it on the b.net account. There is an option to have all your replays saved automatically but I think that's just to stop the automatic deleting of replays when it goes past 25 or w/e the number was.

Looking for people to practice with. Details are:
PocariSweat.606 AceJJ.954 (I don't play on this account anymore)
on SEA
I would estimate myself to be high diamond/low master (was high diamond on my previous account) level despite my new account being placed in gold (I crashed in 2 out of 5 placement matches...)
I rather not play on NA servers cause I get pretty bad lag.

Most of the people who attended this tourney came with friends, so their teams would be automatically set up. We discussed options for players without a team, and one of the top suggestions was that players could sign up and list themselves as solo. I'd then randomly assign them to a team of 4 players. To avoid disputes over who plays, I'd force a cycle of each player per match.
|
I think it might be better to not try to shoehorn solo players into a team format by having forced cycling of players. At that point the teams are largely ornamental and not really influencing the outcome. I definitely like the idea of team leagues but make it open only to pre-arranged teams of friends, with a solo league.
If finances permit (I don't know if this sort of thing turns a profit for you or not Griefer), perhaps do one tournament a week, alternating between teamleague and solo leagues.

Sounds awesome mate
By the sounds of it many people came to the event in "teams" already. Hence the cries as a few people got bracketed against their practise partners (*cough* I played Sanic in round 1 *cough*)

To run a tournament it requires a lot of preparation and mad amounts of stress, I don't have the time to run a weekly or fortnightly tournament. Monthly would be nice but currently the way the tournaments are being run i make a loss, by how much, I wish not to divulge
The problem with running a pre-formed only team league is that it excludes shy players in the community and players that don't have a large group of friends who all share the same competitive interest in SC2. The ultimate goal of all of my tournaments is to include as many people in the community as possible, provide a friendly atmosphere to compete in, and provide a means to network with other players. The prize money is only incidental, as it gives the incentive for the players to show up and adds credibility to the tournament.
Being able to run a solo league alongside a team league may be possible in the future, if social networking occurs between players in the solo leagues. Time will tell.
|
Yeah thats the best thing about double elimination solo tournaments imo, encourages all skill levels to come down because even if you lose first round you have a shot at some wins in the losers bracket
|
Damn wish Canberra could organise something like this . I know cybergamer did a tournament but it was more you had to drive to a net cafe then play your game there, then drive home. A proper tournament like greifer hosted would be great, but unfortunately I doubt there are many people in canberra to participate
|
Thanks for organising this griefer! I wouldn't mind coming to the next one : ) I like the way you ran it encouraging as many people to play despite league, its good like that. But yeah sounds like a new venue would be great for future events.
Any events coming up soon? I wouldn't mind coming ^_^ I saw that rflan but you have to bring your own computer which I'm not too keen on lol
|
Wow I would have loved to come to this but did not know about it. Is there some way I can get notified of the next tournament coming up Hopefully its a month after the last one!
P.S. if anyone wants to practice add me on SEA Slaw.120
