FXOpen is proud to announce the first 64-player invitational tournament in their latest series of invitational events, the FXOpen Invitational Series. This new format sees yet another increase in the prizepool with $1500 cash up for grabs.
We took the time to talk to the defending champion TheStC from team oGs a bit about his performance in both of the tournaments and what it's like being a Korea playing in a foreign event. deL: What were your first thoughts about getting invited to the FXOpen Invitational?TheStC: Because this is the first tournament abroad, I was very excited to join this competition. deL: Do you enter tournaments like this on the Korean server?TheStC: I wish there are lots of this types of tournaments, but ever since GSL has come into effect, there is no other SC2 competitions other than GSL. However, I join every tournament available in Korea even though there are not a lot of them. deL: How does this tournament differ or compare to Korean tournaments?TheStC: It seems a bit different from SC2 tournaments in Korea. For example, you guys have double eliminations in the tournament. Also, the double eliminations prevent technical and skillful SC2 players to drop out of the tournament into preliminaries. In addition, in the losers' round, a person has time to control his or her mind before playing SC2. I love how this competition is being held with the double eliminations. deL: What do you like most about the FXOpen tournament?TheStC: As I mentioned earlier, I love double eliminations the most. deL: Korean players don't get a chance to represent their country very often - how do you feel representing Korea in a foreign tournament?TheStC: Even though I am not they only Korean player, I tried to do my best to show that Korean players are not bad and I was really worried about representing Korea. deL: What is the play level of the foreign players in the FXOpen tournament?TheStC: To be honest, Korean players are a little bit better than foreign players for now. However, what I have noticed is that Korean players have similar styles of playing SC2 and that foreign players have different styles and techniques in their playing. deL: Are there different playstyles from foreign players compared to other oGs or Korean players that stand out to you?TheStC: All foreign SC2 players have different styles from OGS players, but I personally think the player "Select" is very hard to deal with and has his own freaking awesome styles! deL: Do you know or recognise any of the non-Korean players in the FXOpen invitational?TheStC: I have known players such as "Moonglade" who joined the last season and I personally know "Sen" and also know "Select" who was famous for War Hammer gamer. deL: You won the last FXOpen tournament. Do you think you can win now this time? Who will be your toughest opponent?TheStC: I am very confident in every game, but because of the latency problems, I cannot show the full skills of my SC2. Also, "Select" and "oGsHerO" are very hard to play against. deL: The oGs coach was watching the stream. What did your oGs coach say about the games and tournament?TheStC: The coach, through this tournament, has caught my mistakes and helped me, and he was especially surprised at the higher level of SC2 players. deL: Do your teammates support you and oGsHerO in this event?TheStC: Of course! I practiced with all my team mates and TeamLiquid players helped me by telling me how foreign players play SC2. It was a lot easier to prepare once I heard important tips for dealing with foreign players. We thank TheStC for his time taken out from practice to answer these questions!

No Liquid players invited?

|
stop spamming the same thing in every thread

Are they really not inviting Liquid players for the reason I think they didn't ...
Edit: might be wrong since there seem to be only 30 invitees listed out 64?

Yeah, spoke before thinking there.

We have liquid players on the pending list.. I think all of them........ It all depends on whats going on in Korea (I am in Seoul at the moment, I will talk to people personally about it when I see them).

TheStc to dominate everybody again? i think so too

He lost a game every set... So he is beatable.. But he is also a beast

EGiNcontrol as zerg? must be a mistake. A few more zergs in the tourney would be good haha. Looking forward to this

Looking forward to this very very much! The last few FXO tournies were spectacular!

Looks very good indeed! Will definitely be watching.

Try to get more zergs! Like Ciara, MorroW, Machine or KilleR or perhaps some other good zergs.

We want more zergs just as much as the next person, but it's all subject to their availability for the tournament times. We're trying to make it happen though!

I hope that Tyler and Huk plays in this event. I also hope that VODs will be released for this event. The previous 1 still does not have vods released.

should be fun to watch

The player list looks quite fantastic so far.

This is gonna be awesome, these FXOpen tourneys always are. I'm pumped for this!

First Liquid` invite is confirmed! LiquidHayprO joins to roster as well as FXOpen's Aussie Terran FXOFilthy.
If you know someone who wants to play in this event don't hesitate to have them PM or leave a comment as I am open to some suggestions!

Waiting on a reply from HasuObs and XLorD! I think after that half a dozen or so more European invites should round that out considering the timeslot and then I will look at some more Korean and NA-based invites!
|
Aussies to the front stage fighting! So good to see Aussie gamers and Aussie esports joining the international gaming scene.
|
As deL said, many of the Europeans can't make the time. We're only half way through the invite list, still plenty more people to be confirmed
|
Greetings from Korea.
I am hoping we get a truly global showing of our upcoming tournament. I am also hoping that battle.net reconsiders its server positions to fix lag. I know that players, even myself, plays better with 1 ping. SC2 is awesome in Korea because of that reason.
Due to lag issues and time delays, sometimes it hurts alot of players. But we hope to confirm as many as possible from around the globe
We also hope that a guest commentator that we all love will be joining unstable on his stream. But its not 100% confirmed yet
|
inb4 TotalBiscuit as guest. Him or Jinro would be awesome. Really good to see FXOpen actively involved in tournies and stuff. Those shirts were looking good today!
|
Invite ciara for zerg dominance! ^^
|
I'm loving the player-list so far, this is going to be awesome.
|
With this player-list.... I wonder if you could get some sponsorship, and therefore a bigger prize pool... surely the stream is going to have loads of viewers, as it looks like this tournament will be sick.
|
This tourney is sick! Awesome invite list and MASSIVE props for offering stream/commentary in 3 languages! One of the first truly international tournaments so far. Awww yeah Aussies!
|
So keen to cast this! better not be a natural disaster 12 hours before the event for me this time >.<

No Lazarus players?
Needs more EG players.

Hope you guys invite some vVv players and like the poster above me Lazarus ^^.

Unstable's cast link sends you to my old stream, haha.

the list of players is good, hyped about seeing TheStc. Never got to see him play much, and only recently found out he won one of these fxo tournaments in a pretty tough field of players. Looks great though can't wait to watch.
|
More Korean invites! Only from oGs so far, but I will look into hopefully getting a handful from other clans too!
oGsJ
oGsHero
oGsVines (lost 1-2 to SEn in GSL3)
oGskkoma (aka LittleBoy, round 2 GSL3)
oGsSuperNova (aka Dream.t)SaiR)
oGswant

I like this idea, we've only seen him in the TL Opens and if it's the same guy as WC3 he should be pretty good.
|
Yep Ciara is on the invite list it's just a pain to use relocaliser to check when he's online
|
I am guessing not every euro player wants to play at this time of the day.^^
|
As long as they don't need to spend $900 on coffee it should be worth it ;D
|
No Idra? Sadface, but at least we have plenty of other great zergs playing! Love to see some guys from other teams, PainUser should definitely be considered, DeMuslim, kiwikaki, but I'm sure you've sent out plenty of invites, and already a huge pool of talent confirmed, can't wait.
|
Seriously good line up, looking forward to see dde tearing it up again. And can't wait for the oGs guys that we don't get to see often to show their skills.
gl hf!
|
Always a fan of tournaments that combine various continents, should be a lot of fun.
|
|
LGPainUser, mTwDIMAGA and ROOTKiWiKaKi confirmed for the event!
|
|
Here's hoping you will invite Steven Bonnell II
Might not be a pro, but his 1500+ daily viewers would definitely help FXO's fanbase... jussayin
|
want to see sase and ogs rip it up! go deth
|
This lineup is nuts......... Gonna be some good games :D
|
Game casters are very important as well. Hope they are just as good as their european counterparts. Btw, I'm almost certain the Chinese Caster is of Taiwanese origin, he doesn't mind the flag? [-D

amazing job getting artosis to cast.... event is looking rock solid, truely cant wait for it :D FXOpen been doing some solid events for the community
|
Good news! We will also have a German language stream provided by Khaldor of GameSports.de, you can check his stream out here: http://www.mystarcraft.de/de/live/khaldor
If you are thinking there are too many streams and it will crowd the games/lag the players don't worry as we will try to spread the casters around as much as possible and aside from the English stream only one caster is required per game. There are lots of good players from the countries that feature in each stream so at least at the start everyone should be following different players.

HuK might be busy with GSL and doesn't like playing in tournaments outside of Korea due to the latency. I guess when you ladder as much as him it's even more noticable than to the rest of us

Dear Gamers,
We understand there is some disappointment for some players not getting invited into our tournament. That does not mean you have to contact all of our event organisers in order to try to get an invite. Our invite list is already established, with reserves. Note our list changes on a regular basis, so if you simply perform within the community, there is a strong chance you will get an invite.
Anyone who asks for an invite and gets a no response, then asks another one of our management staff the same question, for the same response, will be black listed from our tournaments.
We are sorting out an internal ranking system for invites, and will work on an up down system with qualifiers in our upcoming events.
Regards,
FXOBoSs

that s a hell of a list! Yeah I was a big fan of his from WC3 and didn't realise how well he was doing in SC2 after basically just starting until I saw his name mentioned in the TSL3 qualifier ladder.

Will the brackets be set up completely random or is there some sort of "secret" seeding system behind it?
|
On February 05 2011 12:51 TheBanana wrote: Will the brackets be set up completely random or is there some sort of "secret" seeding system behind it? It's hard to accurately seed all of those top players, but there will be some form of seeding process. Previously it took into account race just to minimise mirror matches early on but this time it might also take into account not only previous results but nationality as well seeing we have many streams that will be following their national heroes The greatest influence on your position in the bracket will be your skill/achievements though.

I don't think it's about the challenge. Select and Killer are his Dignitas team-mates.

In a field of this quality, team kills are unavoidable - it's just unfortunate that yours will perhaps come at a sooner time than others.
If mOOnGLaDe and allaboutyou both advance, they will face eachother after 2 games - the same with Axslav and iNcontroL, and LoWeLy and Max will face eachother in the second round if they both win. It's just bad luck, but on the plus side it is double elimination.

Sadly, we have to announce that Artosis will not be casting this event, as he doesn't have enough time.
Unstable and Wolf will still be providing the English cast, and all other casters are set to remain the same.
Also remember the tournament is tomorrow, results and certain replays will be constantly updated at www.twitter.com/FXOpenESports

Reminder for players
There are a few things to remember before playing in the tournament.
1. The admins are FXOdeL and FXOfrequency, we will be in the chat channel FXOpen if you need to contact us. Contact us regarding any questions or disputes. 2. Maps are determined by vetoe - you each vetoe two maps from the list in the thread to determine the first map, and the loser picks from the 4 remaining. 3. Please be aware that there are a lot of casting teams for this event (for different languages) and you may be required to delay a game in order to accommodate them. 4. Walkover for the first round/s is set at 30 minutes. Let an admin know if your opponent is not there on time and then 30 minutes later if they are still not there you will recieve a walkover pending admin's discretion and circumstances. Later rounds are more flexible but the rule of thumb is that if it would significantly delay the tournament a walkover will be given. 5. "BM" or inappropriate behaviour, placing the sponsor/s or staff in bad light in public, abusive language or behaviour, cheating in any manner, or awarding your opponents a forfeit without what is deemed a good reason will result in disqualification from future, larger events. 6. Please supply your NA account information to me and/or MSN if you have not already so it is easier to get in touch with your opponents.
Regards, FXOdeL

Sadly VTAzz has had to withdraw from the tournament, and as a result REQDarkcell will take his place in the brackets.
|
Wow, so many known players this is gonna be great. Featuring some good casters as well. Cant wait for this to start!
|
REAAAAALLL Shame that Artosis can't make it.
Although he does an amazing job at keeping us in the loop of the Korean scene with good interview/tours etc. I feel he could push outside tourneys a bit more, and become more of a presence back home.
How is it decided who will cast what? And what will be casted where? If you're aware of the ROOT GAMING last tourney, they allowed people to vote on what games they most wanted to see in each time bracket..

So just hope they don't beat their opponents and you have no worries. And Team kills are good sometimes you're guaranteed someone in your team in the next round.

We will do our best to get players to send replays, but while our own site is not up yet we won't have a check-in and compulsory replay upload system, it depends mostly on whether players are too lazy to send them or not

Yes, we'll be releasing a replay pack at the end of the event (as deL said, as long as the players send them!), and we'll be releasing individual replays of good matchups on our Twitter (www.twitter.com/FXOpenESports).

You seriously watch events for the casters?, I can understand if it was a small tournament with only a few top players but this is the most international tournament to date tbh, first koreans v foreigners in a while, not interested to see where the rest of the world stands to them?

Can't believe people would pass up on watching the best non GSL tournament (aside from TSL 3) just because a caster had a scheduling conflict (particularly not when Wolf is a more than awesome replacement too).

The 1-0 are probably default victory

Looking forward to seeing how moonglade goes against supernova. Should be a good warm up to code a for him

Even on equal macro it is incredibly hard for zerg to beat a good protoss.
When a protoss gets 200/200 when you are 170/200, you know you are fucked :O
|
Wow epic sentry timing hasu!
|
haha, I love khaldor. i don't understand anything but he;s amazing

not looking good for hasuobs sigh, rooting for foreigners

Ugh Hasuobs. It seems a common issue with foreigners that they try to tech during a stale mate and the Korean players just keep pressuring and they die.

Hasuobs giving the Korean the win in the last game.

Hasu had the advantage when he defended the first attack, then he overextended and was suddenly down to almost half of Vines supply. I think that his counterattack was where he lost the game.

Sjow vs Hero game 1 was awesome =)
Select vs Nani in round 3 should be sick, so many teamkills for Dignitas though TT

Wow, the results of this are pretty suprising.
It really shows how even though we perceive koreans to be on that "extra level", they really are on the same playing field(with the exception of the tip top such as nes tea and immvp, but thats through pure dedication.)
EG strifeco beats check prime, incontrol beats junwi, and heck previously check prime had lost a game to Nrg_steve, a relative unknown.
Perhaps its the lag, but at the very least it shows that really, foreigners have a chance.

Just wait a few more rounds, and the Koreans will have lots of spots (is my guess).

Moonglade is playing very well. I can't help but think that this game would've been over 10 minutes ago if it wasn't LT close positions, though.

He never ATTACKED.
50 muta mean absolutely nothing when a terran gets 3/3 marines and 3/0 thors out, they die almost instantly. The entire point of the marine/tank/thor slow push is that it can't be attacked easily without brood lords, but he was so afraid to leave his base that ge just let the zerg take 5 more bases and roll him 30 mins later.

Incontrol destroyed by Mana despite the bad start. Mana goes Blink Stalkers while Incontrol quick techs to Colossus.

oGsTheStC vs oGswant on the fxopen (Unstale87) stream right now.

man i love mana's pvt and pvp style so much

Why Incontrol? Whyyyyyy? Seems like blink stalker is a good way to go for PvP these days.

Mana's blink stalker play is really nice, happy to see him advance given how much of a toss up PvP can be. Likely to have to try his PvP vs Hero next though ><

No harm done if that's not what you meant.

Well, Supernova did attack. actually. He attacked both the expo and main and destroyed everything there. moonglade just didn't fight with the muta ball and there was no way he can get his thors and tanks across the map without having his base wrecked.
His earlier push got destroyed by the mass lings and banelings. He also lost his depot and wall to the baneling bust earlier and had to focus on defending his natural

Being constantly pressured by mutalisks is now an excuse to sit on your base the rest of the game waiting until your opponent comes with 15 brood lords?? Sitting there won't ever let you win. GSL level terrans know how to attack and defend their base with very few units.

He didnt just sit there. He was dropping, and trying to drop all over the place, but most of the drops got denied by the mutas. He also attacked the main and took it out. He also tried to expand several times. Did he just sit there? No he didn't but the threat of the mutas denied him from moving out. If he went across the map the mutas would destroy all his production facilites and he would be vulnerable to banelings. He would never have won a baserace in that situation.

Idra and Artosis are calling the 2 base colossus void ray imbalanced, but on maps where P can actually get a third and even a fourth doing (Shakuras, meta cross spots, I'd assume the GSL maps) it it just becomes ridiculous. I'd be extremely surprised if ogsJ manages to win this.

With the amount of voidrays he has, he doesnt have that big a ground army. With enough mutalisks, he should be able to take them down.

Zerg needs higher tech units than hydras and roaches against 3/4-base Protoss play. Ultras + mutas + infestors do quite well vs. this composition. Can dump the rest of the minerals going into zerglings.

I've been trying this a bit recently, going corruptor roach and trying to deny the third. It's really really hard though and corruptors aren't a long-term solution vs 2 stargate chronoed void rays.

Yeah I know that's a nice composition, but look at the gas cost for each of those units.
I'm guessing stuff like this will become viable on the GSL maps where Zerg can get a ridiculous number of bases, but it's pretty damn hard to get more than 4 bases up on meta.

You already have 2 stargates up for phoenix. Yes, a muta switch can be good if it catches the toss at unawares, but I don't think it's a stable solution.

damn nice jukes by Strifecro
|
Haha and it's Shakuras cross positions next. I'm guessing we'll see exactly the same thing as last game with exactly the same result.
I don't want to derail this thread too much btw, I'm not claiming imbalance just yet, I just think it's really really hard for Z to deal with from my own experience and watching a LOT of pro games. I haven't seen a Z having any good solutions for it yet (except hydra drop before the first colossus is out, but that's not a very stable solution either).

I think what a lot of zergs fail to do is keep the protoss tech unit numbers down or abuse the immobility.

Well you can't really use that battle as an example since Strife gave his Brood Lords away for nothing.

OgsJ showing how to play ZvP when you're ahead in bases. Traded armies, multiprong attacks.

Great two-pronged harass from oGsJ. Wonder if that can be done on any other map...
Also, who is J? Haven't heard of him before. Someone change their name?

oGsJ takes down SaSe 2-1 after a brilliant feint attack on the rocks, keeping 4-5 roaches attacking the rocks and as a result SaSe's entire army guarding his 2nd expansion while oGsJ takes his entire army minus the 4 roaches and attacks SaSe's opposite expansion.

Oh man, the reason for the Prime players not showing is that the manager read the time as 11:00PM KST instead of 11:00AM! He apologises on behalf of the team and hopefully we can see some of the Prime player's in-game next time!

Wow, thats a real blunder. What a pity...

SaSe goes collosus, holds off blink stalkers. Nice change of pace for a pvp
|
Don't worry it was a genuine accident from Prime so they will be invited back to next tourney.

Is anyone watching miDnight's stream? As it seems now, someone with the ID DignitasKiller (or something along those lines) was watching his stream while killer played against Sheth. Does anyone think that's the real killer, or no?

What happened between Killer vs Sheth?

yamato we are investigating.

Thanks for putting on such a good show, by the way. I love the bracket. Should make for some great games.

Great Cup, it´s good to see players from Asia, Europe and the US in one Cup. There were some interessting games so far.
Khaldor does a great job, it´s fun to watch and so I don´t need sleep this night :D

Khaldor is currently casting in english right now. In case you didn't know, Khaldor is a german caster who is very energetic and amazing. I sometimes even watch him over English casters even though I have no idea what he's saying

Khaldors english casting was as amazing as his german casting..... crazy good.

Even when he casts in German, he casts in Denglish so he uses a lot of English phrases and unit names.

On all three streams actually lol
|
GoOdy vs mOOnGLaDe will be tense, GLaDe playing in 1 second delay from Korea, and GoOdy has been solid this tourney!
|
Not going to lie I love Khaldors stream, he even shows statistics for the match ups.
|
For those wondering about the situation with KiLLeR, it appears to be a big misunderstanding which only results in a warning and a reminder to all other players.
KiLLeR was just watching the previous game on the stream, and paused the stream when he had to play. He was streaming (which is against the rules, but ironic enough this is what saved him) and we can see by looking at the archive he didn't do anything wrong.
For all players in our future events - please read the rules and when we tell you not to stream, don't. Also, remember to close your other streams! ^^

Felt bad for moonglade, delay in ZvZ is a really really annoying situation to be in ><

kkoma I am disappointed

Lol, it's games like Goody vs MoonGlade that makes me glad I chose Protoss at beta instead of Zerg

Damn.... counter attack by MoonGlade soo good. Down drones? Who cares lol

You don't like winning? ^^
Edit: looked good for a bit at least.
|
Moonglade beasting! Banelings take out all of Goody's scv's at his natural. close positions meta
|
Moonglade is just WOW! I would have died about 15 times so far If he turns this around, i will start believing in God - Moonglade!
|
Terrans keep failing at the baneling all-in moonglade does when he gets behind...
|
Moonglade has just survived so many times in this match.
|
I don't understand why we don't see more mech play like goody. Thor/tank is very hard to break, and blue flame helions allow for major harassing options. It's only moonglades great multitasking thats keeping ihm alive
|
Seems like nobody knows how to deal with mass muta play n__n
IdrA will have a field day
|
This game is pretty crazy, but this Chinese commentator makes it crazier.
|
The reason you don't see more mech play is because of what you just saw - 6 thors dying to ~20 mutas and then your entire tank line gets sniped.
|
|
Muta and zergling eat them I guess. especially the lack of AA in marines. Moonglade looks as if he's struggling because his muta micro isn't stellar.
|
When in doubt, trust your mutas.
mOOnGLaDe has had excellent muta control since beta, people should always prepare for it.
|
nooo mOOnGLaDe What a great game though!
|
What an epic hold on close positions metalopolis. Nice try Glade.
|
I'm watching both Khaldor and FXOpen's stream.
It seems like Khaldor likes focusing more on the Terran and Unstable on the zerg.
|
just <3 goody and that he sticks to his style

Well would make sense the Australian/FXOpen guys have a little bit of bias onto their own player.

I missed game 2 of mOOnGLaDe vs. GoOdy. D:
What happened?
|
Sick Sick defense by moonglade. Seems like he plays so calm and collected.
|
Sick defense by mOOnGLaDe
|
pretty bad micro (or rather barely any) by Goody there
|
banelings so cost effective
|
Proxy rax on Shakuras, Moonglade pulls all of his drones, denies the bunker and Goody gg's.
|
did he lost any scvs? lol didn't look like much..
|
I really have the impression Goody is playing worse the longer the tourney goes. Probably tired and Moonglade really on the top of his game

Yeah, the proxy rax and 2 base push seems to reflect that.

Man Glade played damn awesome...
well done son
|
It really feels like the Glade just wore Goody down. Close positions Metalopolis was an incredibly long game and Glade never quite seemed down and out and after it he maintained his edge while Goody probably felt pressured and tired, and wanted to end the games quickly as we saw in Games 2 and 3.
Really unfortunate that the psychological aspect got to Goody, but that's Starcraft and god knows Day9 has talked about this more than often. <3 Glade, please win against Destination!
|
First time I've seen moonglade play and I have to say I am impressed. They way he held off that cheese on Shakuras and his game sence of what to expect has shown me he is defintely code A material :D. Will be cheering him on during the GSL :D
|
Goody got worse each game. Glade has been amazing throughout this tournament though. He has really pulled off some amazing holds/comebacks. If the.stc wasn't in I would say glade is the favorite right now

I guess some players didn't show up. Quite a few actually

There was a time problem.

of course there was a problem when you let the europeans play at 3 am, how should they play at that time without losing concentration?? bad organized

Its probably more the time (was it 5 or 6 am) than some "psychological aspect" that wore him down. He just could not play his usual turtle style due to time and had to try to end it quickly.

1. The tournament has players from EVERY region of the world, no time is perfect 2. The players would have been well aware of t he time of the tournament when accepting invites 3. The tournament ran smoothly with a ton of streams in different languages and non stop games being played of the highest quality
A tournament with a player pool this diverse was always going to have a chunk of no-shows for various reasons, these were made worse by the Prime team manager misreading AM and PM but it was definitely not "bad organized" and I challenge you to come up with a better time to run a multi national tournament
I have nothing to do with FXO but I have the utmost respect for people putting on these huge big money tournaments and attracting the best talent from around the world for us to watch for free, if there was actually anything worth complaining about I would be right there with you but this just seems like whining for the sake of whining.

So far everybody has said the tourney was organized greatly. The time this tournament is related to the fact that it has players from all over the globe, what does that have to do with organisation? Yeah it sucks for Europeans, put if they cant play at that time they should not have accepted invites in the first place.

Yeah, I don't see this guy complaining that all the go4sc/zotac/tl opens start at midnight in Australia, they must all be bad organized right!

any VOD's of this ? for us in the CET timezone the tournement starts at 3 am ...

sry about that bad organized thing, i shouldn't write that, yea that was whining, but just because im usually rooting for the europeans who are invited too. They just couldn't just play that well, like Goody

There is always going to be someone upset. Our players have to tolerate TSL timezones, and do not complain about it. They play at 4am and other weird times for that tournament. Its part of being a pro gamer..
It is not hard to set yourself up to have enough sleep for such a tournament time. It just takes discipline.
|
I just found some VOD's from justin.tv if you click the English cast with Artosis and Unstable.

replays are on the fxopen esports twitter, I'm sure frequency will show you the link.

We haven't uploaded many as of yet, but all of the replays will be available for download at the conclusion of the tournament (assuming everyone sent their replays).
www.twitter.com/fxopenesports has links to maybe 6 or 7 of todays games.

To the question, "is there a perfect timing to play a worldwide tournament" the answer is no.
To the question, is there a better timing than this, for instance not including the largest group of players, or any other large group of players, having to play from 03:00 to 06:30, I'm sorry but the answer is undoubtebly yes.
Great tournament overall, but don't try to obscure a real issue which semt obvious for quite a lot of European players...

Pleasantly surprised to see both Lalush and DarkCell making it so far in the upper bracket, though I think the winner of Mana vs Hero will probably come out on top there. STC vs SeleCT rematch is a mouth watering prospect if J or OptikZero don't conjure up an unpset =)
Also go Sheth, he always puts in good performances at the fxo's heh

Euro fans could do with stopping and thinking about what time an Australian tournament is likely to run at, particularly given the fact it has a truly global scope where one of the key points to how awesome it is, is that they are able to have top name Korean players involved.
If you're a progamer, and you wish to participate in a tourament like this you adjust for it; either sleep early and set an alarm, or adjust your sleeping schedule steadily a few days in advance so you are wide awake when the tournament comes around. It's not like most of the top eu guys are otherwise employed to have to worry about adjusting their sleeping hours for gaming.

Well said. Some pretty ignorant stuff being said in this thread. FXOpen is an Australian group iirc, what makes you think they will run the tournament at a European favoured time when the majority of players are Korean/US/Australian.

No, it is rather hard to set up a time. Remember, it has to be an acceptable time for Australia, since it is a tournament from an Australian company, and then you have to accommodate for Korea, NA and Europe, which, as you know, is all across a lot of different timezones. It would have been very difficult to set up an acceptable time for everyone, it's not hard to see that.

I guess (i'm not absolutely sure about timezone) that if the tournament had started at 16:00 - 18:00 in Australia/South korea, then it would have started at 07:00-09:00 in Europe and 23:00-00:00 for central/east America, 01:00-02:00 in west america. So of course west america has it bad, but 1). They have it less bad than Europeans starting at 03:00AM and 2). They are a minority compared to Europeans.

People have the option of not playing in the tournament. Plus, as a professional gamer you always have time to adjust your sleeping pattern to fit the tournament time-zone better. Either by making sure you wake up at 2AM or stay up and go to bed at 8AM (or whenever the tournament finishes for the day).
If the players refused to play during those times they simply would've opted out of the tournament. No one is forcing anyone to play at a certain time because they don't have to play in this tournament if they don't want to. Crying on behalf of players who knowingly accepted the invite completely aware of the times is absolutely ridiculous. If anyone should be doing the crying it's the players, and even then it's absolutely ridiculous because they knew what they were getting into.

Uploading some of the replays from Day 1 and releasing them on twitter now! Unfortunately not many people sent them in, but Day 2 should see more replays!

So of course west america has it bad, but 1). They have it less bad than Europeans starting at 03:00AM and 2). They are a minority compared to Europeans.
How long did the first day go for? 4-5 hours? If you start that for Australia, it will be about 11.00PM before it finishes. Unfortunatly, as it is an Australian tournament, it has to be optimal times for Australia, and not for other time zones. Same thing happens when you host a tournament in any other time zone.

Nice first match to start off, go go SeleCT! Cross pos meta should hopefully make for a great first game

I dont know any better time for EU. U come home and tourneys are rdy to start.. Perfect for a weekend. better than in the early evening where u have better stuff to do. Exept ur actually a player who needs to focus..

Artosis already didn't sleep from casting TLOpen, I don't think he'd cast at all.

SeleCT very dominant in game 1, really abused optik expanding straight to the gold

The winner will face sTc/oGsJ, this could be a rematch of the last FXO final.

DT+warp prism for optikzero, 1techrax expand for Select.

SeleCT is so awesome, I'll be really upset if he doesn't manage to squeeze into TSL3 because he's definitely one of the very best players currently outside of Korea.
Seems like Sheth 2-0'd Incontrol, nicely done by him =)

Optikzero might not be a top tier opponent, but damn Select is impressive.

I know and it doesn't look like he's going to get into tsl unless he gets far next week ><

Build stalkers next time Optikzero, please! All you had to do is kill those medivacs and you would've been golden.
But SeleCT abused the fuck out of it so well done to him, really well played.

SeleCT played that so so well, particularly after getting caught completely off guard by Optik's fast DT/Warp Prism build

no wonder why incontrol called select the octopus terran hes everywhere at once!

Wow Selects multitask is so good. Great comeback by him. Also kudos to khaldor for casting so much yesterday and today even tho I dont speak German the passion is his commentaries is contagious

Yeah Khaldor has also become one of my favourite casters, I prefer him over the english stream although I don't understand a word of German.

Select is definetely a top 5 foriegner terran. I just wished he played in more tournies. And major props to sheth in 2-0ing incontrol in pvz. Thats not an easy feat

I've not seen a whole lot of bubbles, but I saw him play in the first jtv invitational a while back and thought he showed some nice stuff, so this should be interesting =)

GOD I LOVE KHALDOR!!! and he has fluent english, he should do a mix of english german casting, hitting both german and english speakers at the same time!

is select really at risk of not making tsl through points? didnt he finish top4 for 2 times already or something like that?
|
He was in korea and didn't enter / missed a lot of TSLs
He has 1 TSL to qualify, by getting top 8 or better

incontrol still doesn't deliver in tournaments, saddens me :<

He beat LZ and StrifeCo, lost to Mana and Sheth, it's hardly a disappointing performance imo.
Hero 2-0'd Mana, I thought that one might have been a little more competitive.
Lalush 2-0'd Darkcell!
===
RE: Select and TSL 3.
He's currently something like #10 on the points list, meaning he's 2 places outside of the qualifiers so has to get at least some kind of points scoring placing next weekend to even have a shot.

Best case scenario, top 8 will make him tie for 8th with Strelok, so he'll have to play a play off for his spot, but most likely he'll have to make top 4 to qualify.

Standard 4-gate, but Sjow managed to push right after his opponent warped in 4 units on the opposite side of the map, so it became a base race, and we all know which race tends to win that one.
|
On February 20 2011 11:42 MrCon wrote: What, I'm off screen for 5 minutes and sjow is 1-0 already, what happened ?
MEtalopolis bubbles 4 gate SjoW pushes bubbles before the 4 gate kicks in. Bubbles was already on the way to SjoW's base using the other path. Bubbles then pushes SjoW's base but SjoW has a bunker and is able to defend with workers + a few units while completely destroying bubble's economy.

Which really sucks, because I have no doubt in my mind that Select can beat many of the top 8. He just doesn't do too well in long tournaments I guess, because he always falls out ro64-ro32

They both went for pushes at the same time, running around metalopolis the opposite way to each other xD
Bubbles waited on warp ins while Sjow went straight up his ramp and started trashing his base, that meant Bubbles had to warp in at home while trying to push Sjows base but Sjow got a bunker up and held off pretty easily and Bubbles just gg'd since his main was still taking a beating.

Knowing lalush, probably a ragequit. Don't blame him either. That was brutal
|
Lalush doesn't gg when he loses. Never had, never will. Get used it.
|
Speaking as a Protoss...mass Voidrays doesn't just only counter Hydra/Corruptor, they counter EVERYTHING :/ (except maybe mass Marine), the unit is so dumb, there seems to be no middle ground. A few void rays are bad but a ton of them are ridiculous
|
He rage quitted after throwing away his entire army against the void rays + colossi.
|
On February 20 2011 12:19 Dommk wrote: Speaking as a Protoss...mass Voidrays doesn't just only counter Hydra/Corruptor, they counter EVERYTHING :/ (except maybe mass Marine), the unit is so dumb, there seems to be no middle ground. A few void rays are bad but a ton of them are ridiculous
Mass Void Rays lose to mass mutas or mass hydras, cost for cost. The colossi are key to this composition for getting rid of hydras, and Lalush was doing well sniping the colossi until he just decided to a-move his corrupters and hydras into void rays and 3 colossi, which lost him the game.
|
either snipe the collosi with corruptors and kill the rest with hydras, or play mass mutas.
|
I guess if you never gg, it's not considered ragequitting, lol. I doubt lalush rages every single lost game.
|
Yep I feel you have to focus down the colossus asap - the catch of course is that generally that gives the void rays time to charge up and the P can get some good forcefields off ;P

I thought lalush was going for an interesting infestor/muta tech switch with good flyer upgrades. I'm assuming he got the greater spire for upgrades not blords.
|
Khaldor is always talking about mass mutas. But I don't think that will work either against Voidray/collossi. Maybe in very late game if you remax only with mutas after your army died.
|
unless Lalush goes for some timing attack, I won't be surprised if the Protoss repeats what he did in the previous game and turtles while massing up VR / collossi
|

it does, the only games i saw seeing zerg beat that army composition, was with massiv muta usage

Judging from I've seen Zerg pros say, Mass Mutas work great the problem is actually getting to that mass because of the timing window it opens.

United Kingdom16710 Posts
I guess zergs are avoiding the muta switch because they fear the protoss will just pump phoenixes to shut that down. However, when you have infestor tech like lalush did that game, I think it could work. You just have to smooth out the transition to make sure you don't die during the switch. Something to be explored definitely.
|
Hmm Select v TheStC rematch coming up!
|
Eh, I hate when PvZ ends up with this unstoppable protoss ball despite whatever advantage zerg may have. Seems once Protoss hits 200.200 its impossible to beat them

Lalush's theorycrafting is better than his playing >_>

Ugh. heros play looks so scary. mass muta beats the vr/colossi ball, but he adds in a few phoenixes and it changes everything.

Just a comment on this for those wondering why last event's 1st and 2nd are playing each other: we eventually want to use an internal ELO or ranking for seeds and invite choices but there were too few tournaments run at this stage. Because of this, seeding included such players are Junwi and other top Europeans who had not played in the events yet and it would be unfair to give someone like Junwi no seeding! Eventually the previous tournaments will have a lot of weighting on invites and seeding, though

Yeah, I've seen his play during beta and he was clearly one of the best then. But right now, it seems like he still gets a lot of undeserved hype, even though he hasn't really accomplished much due to better T's catching up (and him being in the army). It's kind of like TesteR, who's pretty much fallen off the radar since beta.

TheStC is still a monster. While watching him on Xeph's stream about a week ago it was pretty apparent he still is pretty ridiculous. While he isn't MVP, nobody is.

stc's military service is done may 25th 2011, i have it straight from his fingers the reason for his hype is that he's a top 5 terran despite being in the military, so we can only be excited about how good he'll be once he's out.

Is that so? I always assumed he went into service just before the first GSL. I guess that makes his play back the in beta all the more impressive. Really looking forward to seeing what this guy will do with full-time training.

It's viable, because getting 2 colossi forces ~12 corrupters, Which chew up supply. And mOOnGLaDe reacted very badly to DT's; he could very easily have had a spore and a spine at each base so that DT's would have been detected and sniped instead of having been allowed to Kill everything. mOOnGLaDe was so far ahead before that happened...
Oh, and the 3/3 helped a lot.

those dts who sniped 2 bases completely flipped the game around. Reminded me of artosis' game in the gsl

The failed attack pretty much screwed him over. There was almost no way for him hold with two bunkers of units when the protoss has both sentries and immortals with constantly warp-in reinforcements.

I think he could've held it (perhaps barely) had he not lost that middle bunker due to the very late SCV pull. Hero didn't have that many FFs at his disposal and StC had decent production up himself. Not sure why the repair was so late though since he clearly saw what Hero was doing with that scouting SCV.

Maybe. But I feel that if the protoss sees that and just waits for another immortal and another round of units, he can still break it easily. Would just be delaying the inevitable.

Sheth was aiming to do damage, that much was sure.
Remember, from afar those hydras can take out those gateways/forges without being hit by cannons.
Furthormore, the majority of optiks' army as far as I could tell were phoenixes, and just started getting other stuff.
I think he could've won.

Oh man, I don't envy the admins for having to make a decision between their own 2 players.

it was actually pretty smart play by optik, go mass phoenix to force many hydras, then go chargelots + void rays, voidrays to demolish the small roach army and chargelots to slaugther hydras

As they are teammates it's easier - the manner option is to regame. Had they not agreed to something like that the replay would be viewed and it had to be CLEARLY in favour of one player (as in, you could replace them with a platinum player and they'd still win it) to award a win.
I feel giving a win before the game is over is the greater evil than taking an advantage away from a player in most cases. The point is to determine the better player so if the person with an advantage can't do it again they may not have deserved the first win (doesn't apply when they are cheesed out of course )!

Pretty sure if it's the former - would be rather pointless to play more than two BoX series when you can just increase the number of games instead.

How are they tacky if they're useful? You don't need a fancy one, just a simple overlay(can be small) indicating who's playing and the score. It's very useful for people tuning in instead of relying on a caster to say a name or click a unit, and even then they won't know the current results. These petty mouse nuisances affect the quality of the camera control and hence casting, which is probably more important than a fancy overlay. However, I am sure there's space on the screen somewhere for an overlay down the bottom to show playernames.

I'm one of the people that does enjoy your lack of overlay Wolf, but perhaps to go hand in hand with that you need to increase mentions to the previous games in the series / say the names of the players alot more than other casters (ie, HuK, instead of the protoss, as a lot of casters do)
I'm normaly half asleep when I watch the casts though, so you might have already taken this into account, but I say if it's how you roll, stick with it.

We took the time to talk to the defending champion TheStC from team oGs a bit about his performance in both of the tournaments and what it's like being a Korea playing in a foreign event.
deL: What were your first thoughts about getting invited to the FXOpen Invitational? TheStC: Because this is the first tournament abroad, I was very excited to join this competition.
deL: Do you enter tournaments like this on the Korean server? TheStC: I wish there are lots of this types of tournaments, but ever since GSL has come into effect, there is no other SC2 competitions other than GSL. However, I join every tournament available in Korea even though there are not a lot of them.
deL: How does this tournament differ or compare to Korean tournaments? TheStC: It seems a bit different from SC2 tournaments in Korea. For example, you guys have double eliminations in the tournament. Also, the double eliminations prevent technical and skillful SC2 players to drop out of the tournament into preliminaries. In addition, in the losers' round, a person has time to control his or her mind before playing SC2. I love how this competition is being held with the double eliminations.
deL: What do you like most about the FXOpen tournament? TheStC: As I mentioned earlier, I love double eliminations the most.
deL: Korean players don't get a chance to represent their country very often - how do you feel representing Korea in a foreign tournament? TheStC: Even though I am not they only Korean player, I tried to do my best to show that Korean players are not bad and I was really worried about representing Korea.
deL: What is the play level of the foreign players in the FXOpen tournament? TheStC: To be honest, Korean players are a little bit better than foreign players for now. However, what I have noticed is that Korean players have similar styles of playing SC2 and that foreign players have different styles and techniques in their playing.
deL: Are there different playstyles from foreign players compared to other oGs or Korean players that stand out to you? TheStC: All foreign SC2 players have different styles from OGS players, but I personally think the player "Select" is very hard to deal with and has his own freaking awesome styles!
deL: Do you know or recognise any of the non-Korean players in the FXOpen invitational? TheStC: I have known players such as "Moonglade" who joined the last season and I personally know "Sen" and also know "Select" who was famous for War Hammer gamer.
deL: You won the last FXOpen tournament. Do you think you can win now this time? Who will be your toughest opponent? TheStC: I am very confident in every game, but because of the latency problems, I cannot show the full skills of my SC2. Also, "Select" and "oGsHerO" are very hard to play against.
deL: The oGs coach was watching the stream. What did your oGs coach say about the games and tournament? TheStC: The coach, through this tournament, has caught my mistakes and helped me, and he was especially surprised at the higher level of SC2 players.
deL: Do your teammates support you and oGsHerO in this event? TheStC: Of course! I practiced with all my team mates and TeamLiquid players helped me by telling me how foreign players play SC2. It was a lot easier to prepare once I heard important tips for dealing with foreign players.
We thank TheStC for his time taken out from practice to answer these questions!

Will there be any replays released after the event is over? Unfortunately until we get a website (which is in the works but lower down the priority list for now) it is hard to get every single replay. We realise this and so during the event we have been releasing some choice replays via our twitter (http://twitter.com/FXOpeneSports). Without a website where you report results and upload replays, the replays rely on the players taking the time to send them to our email and so many forget or don't save them at all and you can only remind them so many times!
Big thanks to the players who do send the replays in, and you can find them all on our twitter in older tweets! http://twitter.com/FXOpeneSports

Going live now with SeleCT vs TheStC in the LB final (bo5)! No-shows must have been contagious but we can't be too quick to blame with all of these patches recently ruining second installs and relocalisers!
Next time we will try our best to reduce the number of no-shows but as always the quality of games should be top notch!

nice game. Select had trouble spending all his money because of the heavy pressure of thestc. Awesome how stc nearly made a comeback after loosing half of his scvs. Also great drops by Select in the beginning.

STC Blue flame hellion (no damage) into Siege tank timing push.
Select had no tanks no marauders no banshees because of his banshee/marine/fast expansion opening and instantly dies.

|
Uh, he's not really impressive at all. StC outclasses him by far, and the entire series pales in comparison to Jinro's TvT.
It's like 4 games of running into each others' siege lines trying to get 1 more shell out than the other guy, with Select pulling SCVs into it like 3 times per game.

Select and STC put on an a pretty good series though, very entertaining and up to higher level GSL standard.

The gap wasn't huge but TheStC looked like the better player in every game imo, including the one Select won (the failed drop + counter drop gave Select a HUGE lead but then he spent the rest of the game clinging on to it for dear life).

It's because oGsHerO won the upper bracket final so was never technically relegated tot he lower bracket - that's what the first Bo5 represents, TheStC has to take HerO down to the Lower Bracket.

Hero opened Sentry heavy on close pos meta while theStC went 2 rax expand, Hero got a warp prism to drop all his sentries into theStC's base and permanantly locked him out with ff's on the ramp while using the warp prism to warp in masses of zealots. Really awesome.
As for the format, Hero won the upper bracket finals so has yet to lose a match, the tournament is double elimination so the play who comes through the lower bracket to the grand finals has to win 2 series (So Hero is eliminated twice), while Hero has to win one.

SeleCT with the self shoutout :D
Come on StC, hoping this goes to 5 games. As much as protoss pisses me off, Hero does look very strong. Certainly stronger than some of the protosses in the GSL. That move in game 1 was awesome, never seen it before.
