Why would he not play as well as he can? They are pros; they want to play their best every time they play.

It doesn't really work out that way though in most competitive sports/games at the professional level. Motivation is a huge part of it and its hard to get up for something that is essentially meaningless in the grand scheme.

If they have dedicated a portion of their lives to competitive gaming in an e-sport that requires a ton of practice, I don't think they would mind playing another game at their fullest.

Moreover, there are extrinsic and intrinsic factors that both push the player to perform at their best. Perhaps a girlfriend, teammate, or coach who expects the best out of you, or you yourself fighting to exit the qualifiers with a resounding (and epic) win.

All that contrasts with simple laziness; I don't think there's a comparison

Thats purely theoretical though, because it simply isn't the case in practice, as is seen in just about any professional level competition, regardless of what game or sport is being played. It isn't as though he would make a conscious decision to not play his hardest, playing SC at the top level (or even average joe Diamond player) is particularly demanding mentally.

The issue is about having the mental focus and desire to play at your absolute best, and it is much less likely to be achieved when you have much less to play for.

I have to agree with ch0c0b0fr34k. Particularly looking at your last line there. They will have the mental focus if they have the desire to play, and choco's post lists many possible desires. I understand that these desires might not be as great as making money, qualifying for whatever, etc but I believe if you have any desire you can get into that mental state, it's not like it takes SO much out of you to try your best that you'd rather just wing it.

Those desires are intrinsic with just about every form of competition that has ever been played between a couple of human beings, and yet you would find many examples throughout any sport of athletes/teams capitulating when it doesn't matter, and finding that extra edge when something very important is on the line.

My point isn't that you can't play your best when you have nothing to gain, its just that his argument is particularly flawed in justifying the point. Theres a lot more to it than simply not being lazy and "playing one more game to their fullest". If it was as easy as simply wanting to play your best, you wouldn't have bad days where you can't motivate yourself, even though you want to.

In this case the biggest motivator is pride and avoiding embarrassment, which he seemed to trivialise with his reponse.

When the cannon on the high ground was warping in, why didn't Monster attack that one instead of the one on the bottom?

Wait, so they are releasing the balance patch two days before the GSL final? Surely that can't be right...
