Thanks for a great tournament! I was so overwhelmed when i entered the room in the morning. You deserve all the credits you get and hopefully we'll see more of this in the future!

It was a fun tournament, never thought my zvz would prove to be my most stable MU as I only dropped games to strifecro in the finals while I lost one game in a zvp and one in zvt before reaching the finals.

The final games was a lot of fun! First game was a bummer, I had played against seth doing the same build but instead of countering it the way I usually do I thought I would get away with just a few lings and spine crawlers.

Second game was intense, I won probably due to strife making the wrong decisions and me getting into the zone, really recommend the game!

Third was similar to the second one, I was way behind in drone count in the beginning, but with rent less attacks of roaches I managed to pull through in the end, also worth watching.

Fourth was a bummer, pure mind games. In an interview earlier we had questions regarding zvz and strategies, 7pool was mentioned and as the map was steppes I decided to go for it. But stupid hesitation blew it for me. I first made another drone after my overlord, as well as strifecros early scout made me go for "a fake 7 pool" and just built drones instead. And as I saw strife going for expo instead of just one base I saw my opportunity to get a win with more early lings. so at a drone count of only 13 I started making lings. This is where things started go wrong again. As I didn't use to normal connection that we had, but rather my own wireless from the school which worked perfectly during the tournament, my bandwidth ran out. Not sure how much it actually effected the turnout but it was sure annoying as I had a superior ling count but it was impossible to micro properly. Worth to watch to see some fail play on (in my opinion both sides) as going for an expo while already being ahead in almost all possible ways is quite risky and might lose you an already won game!

Last game was a build order loss. I attempted for a fast expo on Jungle basin while strife went for a speedling and baneling bust. His units arrived seconds before my first few roaches was able to close the ramp. After the game Strife told me he'd lost the same way a few times in the ladder and knew it was almost an instant loss (rock paper scissor builds).

Overall it was a fun experience and I will take away a lot from this event! Also, thanks to those who picked up the keys and fixed my keyboard after the final game. Next time I'll win!
Really, play for fun!

Just for everyone's information... I signed up a week+ before the deadline but was unable to pay over paypal due to lack of information. As it said in one of the posts, if there are problems with payment, talk to the admins and they will help work things out. Well I messaged them about my problem and they didn't respond to me. After Sunday they sent me a non-reply message that said I didn't pay and didn't make the tournament...
After that I complained to the admins and they said because of the mix up they would put me as the first back up player and call me if there are any players that don't show up. I was visiting friends in Austin and was competing in Warrior Dash on Sunday so I was hanging out on Guadalupe St. hanging out with friends and waiting for a phone call.
@ ExO I informed the admins that without a call I would not show up to the tournament as I'm not going to pay money just to spectate, especially when I have so many friends in Austin that I love visiting with. That's why I wasn't at the tourny, but I was informed that they would call me by phone.
@ Zapdos I'm not terribly concerned with TeSPA's actions, I still had a great time in Austin, but the fact of the matter is that TeSPA admins fucked me over for this tournament... I would have gotten totally trashed anyways, but I couldn't even compete because of countless admin slip ups.
@ Jacob No problem man... Really sucks cause I wanted to play but yeah... I wasn't contacted and I was waiting around the UT campus waiting for a phone call and hanging out with friends. I'm really disappointed but I'm glad you had a good turn out anyways, don't take it personally, I'm just disappointed about my situation regarding the tournament, and how it isn't my fault at all.
ANYWAYS, this isn't supposed to be a hate post. Hopefully I see you all at the next TeSPA event ^_^

Really? Look, how exactly did we fuck you over? Which one of the admins did you email? When you didn't get a response/the response that you wanted, why didn't you email one of the many *other* admins?

Our phone numbers are up there. Why didn't you call? We had people show up, pay at the door and get a competing spot. We also had a guy fly in from Dartmouth, literally stand there and wait for 15+ minutes because he did not prepay or even pre-register but get in. We even had left over spots after this >_>"

How many examples of "countless admin slip ups" do you have example for? I thought the tournament was more than excellent, we all worked our asses off for a month+ to do this. Who exactly told you that we would call to let you know that we had a spot opened just for you good sir? We're not your private secretaries, if you really wanted to compete that much then why didn't ring us up? Takes <5min.

Calm Mary. Nothing we can do. If someone wants to speak badly about us, we just have to smile and let our actions speak for themselves. Plus, I think we did a good job, and that's good enough for me (because mine is the only opinion that matters, god damn it).

I hear he's sexy too.

Edit: Wait, someone flew in from Dartmouth? WHAT THE FUCK?!

Yeah. Remember how there was that one guy who kept waiting patiently for a spot? Turns out he flew in from up yonder and heard about our tourney from a friend. He waited so long just standing there with us at check-in. He was so nice about it too. You could tell he was just really excited about this whole thing.

Poor thing went against ZpuX in the first round though >_<

That's ridiculous! I can't believe that. I wish I could have fixed the brackets for the guy .

Shinta), I apologize about the lack of coordination with you. We made special arrangements with at least ten other players for the morning of the tournament and must have simply overlooked your case. This was the first time we have ever attempted a tournament of this magnitude and there are certain mishaps which cannot be accounted for without experience, regardless of how much prior planning is done and how prepared you think you are. We learned a *phenomenal* amount at this tournament. Next time, everything will run even better and more efficiently! Let's not let this detract from our success, though!

Overall, I am incredibly pleased with how things turned out. Starting from only the abstract concept of "hosting a tournament," we were able to create an in-person 64-person bracket including players from ten different universities across the state accompanied by a $700 prize pool. Throughout the event, we were never more than 30 minutes behind our estimated schedule and were able to workout all technical difficulties that arose promptly. We had live casting throughout the day of some absolutely incredible games, a live interview with ZpuX and EG.StrifeCro, and a huge amount of Starcraft/General Game/Game Music Identification trivia contests between rounds. We also raffled off 3 gift cards, 3 TeSPA T-shirts, and signed 'TeSPA Probes' by well-known players.

The tournament standings are:
1st - EGStrifeCro
2nd - ZpuX [UT]
3rd - TriMaster [UH]
4th - ExO [UH]
5th - EonShiKeno
6th - Cheeseblock [UTA]
7th - jaMble [UT]
8th - Krenium [UT]

Thanks to everyone who came out to play and spectate! We will be hosting at least one (possibly two) tournaments like this one next semester. I am very appreciative of everyone's comments and glad that everyone enjoyed the tournament so much!

I would like to give a huge shout-out to all of TeSPA Officers who helped to coordinate and plan this event, everyone who donated computers and game consoles for use during the day, and the wonderful volunteers who assisted with running the actual tournament! I I'd like to give a huge thanks to ZpuX and EG.StrifeCro for interviewing with us during lunch. Also, a thanks to the UH caster who joined us for a few of the matches.

Without the generous donations from mainLine Gaming and Amp Energy, our tournament would not have been possible. Please check out mainLine at http://www.ml-gaming.net/ and Amp at http://www.ampenergy.com/. Enormous thanks to both of these organizations!

Over the coming days, we will be posting a complete replay pack. Be sure to send in your replays to tespatournament@gmail.com if you have yet to do so. Also, our casters will be casting most of the games and posting those on our YouTube channel. In addition, we will be posting photographs from the event. Many thanks to Waytao Shing and Benjamin Lee for taking so many pictures!

If you're interested in playing in the future, keep an eye on the tournament section on TeamLiquid and our forums at http://tespa.proboards.com/. We will contact all of the players who participated in this tournament when registration opens next time. Also, look forward to a double-elimination tournament if we can work out the facility logistics.

so I was hanging out on Guadalupe St. hanging out with friends and waiting for a phone call.

You could have stopped by if you were just on Guadalupe street. I realize the drag is quite long, but if it was important enough to you to whine on these forums, then you could have at least walked to the ACA building which was like 1/2 a mile off of Guadalupe.

I signed up a week+ before the deadline but was unable to pay over paypal due to lack of information.

This also seems to be a bit of an excuse. I can understand not being able to get something worked out because of paypal, but not because they didn't provide the paypal account to send the payment to. Don't blame the TesPa admins for your incompetency.

I hope you don't show up with this kind of negative attitude at the next TesPa event.

I'm sort of confused about this too, wasn't the PayPal address and info in the original post?

Anyway, I'm planning on posting some pictures and possibly video I took during the tournament. Thanks for putting on such a great event, guys!

lol you guys are so good at misinterpreting and misunderstanding.
I'll respond to only two of you
@Kilgore I knew the TeSPA paypal account, I didn't have my router and account number on me when I needed to. I didn't realize it was necessary to make deposits into my own paypal as I've never used paypal before. Also I was on Guadelupe St in the morning for lunch, and I visited some friends at Coco's Cafe. I've never been to the UT campus before an I don't know anything about it. I'm not going to look at maps and navigate my way around if the admin didn't contact me because that is supposed to mean there isn't a spot available to me. I was just close by so that if I was called I would be able to get there fast so they wouldn't have to wait to long and I would have asked for directions over the phone.
@karasu Haha I'm getting to be quite glad I didn't call you in particular. You are right that I should have contacted multiple admins about it rather than just the one who was messaging me. I just figured he be active in his messaging since he messaged me in the first place. I couldn't have called anyone though, unless I'm going to do so in between my classes when other admins probably have class, I usually work all day after that. I had requested Saturday off for the sc2 tourny and Sunday off for Warrior Dash. I should have emailed other admins about it. I was however told that I would be called personally if a player doesn't show up. Should I have asked all of the admins to call me then? As in seriously call each admin and ask them to call me if someone doesn't show up? I don't think anyone would do that if they were already promised a phone call.

Just one more time to make sure people understand, I feel like I got fucked, but I don't hold any grudge vs any particular admin and I don't feel negatively towards TeSPA. Especially with the way ReAson is responding, I feel he's doing to very good job as an admin in general and I really appreciate his response to the situation. I did want to attend other TeSPA events because I want to support Texas Esports, but if you guys don't want me there, and if you guys act stupidly, then I don't want to be there.
My comment was initially just a small complaint which I do not take back, people just interpreted it incorrectly and in turn tried to cut me down by saying things like "you're stupid" lol. I made a longer post to try to clarify things, but you guys couldn't read it very well it seems.
Well good luck to you guys in the future. Hopefully I meet ReAson at some point. Seems like a good guy...

Shinta, I'm very sorry for the situation. Please understand that this was our first tournament and we were truly trying our best. I'm not sure who promised you a call, but obviously there was a communication mix-up. We'll try to have all of these things worked out in the future.
