Hello, While this is a site mostly for competitive starcraft and sc2, there are still many people who like custom maps, so I thought that I would create a thread on the custom map I have been working on since the release of sc2. Introducing...
HERO ATTACK
Hero attack is an MOBA style map similar to dota. Players work in teams and control heroes and their goal is to destroy the enemy team's main building. Heroes can gain experience, buy items and learn special abilities.
However, this is not a dota clone, there are many differences between hero attack and dota. Most noticeably each team must pick a race (Terran, Protoss or Zerg) before the game starts, and each race has a unique set of items, heroes and units. All heroes and items are based on sc2 units and abilities so it should be fairly straitforward how to use each hero (the ghost hero, for example, has abilities such as snipe, cloak, emp and nuke). The map layout is different from the dota one (the map has 4 lanes instead of 3) and every 5 minutes the lanes will spawn additional troops. The computer player on each team harvests minerals and vespene from there base and gives it to the allied players on the team. There are also neutral hostile critters that you can kill for additional gold. Currently this map has:
Here are some videos. Keep in mind that the videos are of Hero attack in lowest graphics settings because my laptop cannot handle anything higher than that.
I spent alot of time on this map so please give it a try.
If you want to play this map (or something different other than the popular maps), go to join custom games, click show new only and its only 4 pages down. The map is called Hero Attack (version 1).
Edit: The game is no longer considered new so it will be extremely difficult to start or find a game (if it wasn't difficult enough before). I'm working on a new patch that will have atleast 12 new heroes, some new items and some balance changes. When i'm done the patch I'll republish, so you should probably wait for the new patch. I'll indicate in advance when the patch is coming out.
This map is only available on the North American server at this point in time.
I haven't played the game yet, but I think it might be a mistake to have 4 lanes instead of 3, almost in the same sense that it would be a mistake to add a 4th race to the game itself.
I duno.. I think that anyone that played dota competitively would agree, although it may be too hard to explain.
You kind of need a middle lane, and seeing as how there is 4 in your mod... congruency would mean that were wasn't.
The race pick thing pre-game is very interesting though.
Alright, because people in this thread have asked so kindly, I created a youtube acount and have finished a video explaining the map and showing off some of the heroes. When it's done uploading I will put a link here.
On the DOTA vs AOS vs MOBA thing I thought MOBA was the correct term.
It isn't just the quantity of the heroes, but also the quality. It's pretty easy to mass produce heroes if you stick with passives, simple damage or apply behaviour spells and stay away from morphs and anything that involves using actors. But if you want the heroes to be more unique and make sure that the animations work properly and that there are no bugs, then you have to put in a bit more effort.
Also, heroes don't take too long to make. It only took about 2 weeks to finish the heroes and figure out how to use the editor at the same time (given I didn't sleep much those 2 weeks).
And SOTIS only has about 17 heroes.
As for a video of the map, I'm currently uploading the video to youtube, it should be done uploading in about 2 hours.

its an AoS not a dota.
I don't know if you've ever played AoS, but Dotas style departs so drastically from AoS that Dota clone would be more appropriate then AoS unless you want to go with what Riot games calls them "MoBA" (Multiplayer online battle Arena)
Only similarities between DotA and AoS was AI controlled creeps fightings. lol.
I just watched your intro videos, game looks very promising, I like how you stayed pretty close to starcraft lore. I'll give it a try.
How exactly do you intend the main base CPU AI to function? Are you going to give it a script and have it auto build tier increases at set increments or allow the AI to function more organically? Maybe allow it to build buildings at set $ and have it work kind of like desert strike with each building increasing each lane spawn, this could go hand in hand with your harass workers concept as it would put even more at stake with your AI's miners dieing. Just a random idea, not sure if it would improve the dynamic of map but I'll throw it out there. Anyways I'm going to see if I can get a game going.
LOL@people trying to go "ITS NOT A DOTA-LIKE MAP ITS AN AOS/MOBA MAP"
Nobody other than your anal group even knows wtf MOBA is, and nobody except old school whiny BW players know wtf AoS is. On the other hand, even people who don't play video games know what DotA is.

People who don't play video games know what DotA is? I seriously doubt that.

I don't, Basshunter made sure at least some of them knew. ^^ Sadly I can't play since I am on EU.

The computer AI is already fully functional in terms of mining and building buildings. I got it to work using trigger editor. The only reason you see me use commands in that game such as -exp or -tier2 was because it was a demonstration video. In the actual game, the computer builds new spawn buildings at 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes. I even accounted for the possibility of the a player trying to block a building being placed and screwing up the game; I won't go into too much detail in how I did this but it's a similar method to build a building on a vespene gyser. The computer will also build on the vespene gysers as the game progresses and will mine from them with a maximum of 3 workers. If workers die, the computer will rebuild workers, but it takes time. Also, I accounted for the fact that zerg losses a worker when they build a building by giving them additional workers when the zerg player constructs buildings and accounted for the fact that the terrans have lose mining time when they build buildings due to the fact that they must keep their worker on the building until it completes by giving the terran earlier new workers than protoss. Oh yeah, the computer builds workers over time. At the start of the game there are 6 workers per base, but towards the end there are 18. So players should have an increase to their income over time.

Actually it's true. I know a lot of people who don't or barely play video games who have heard the term DotA.
I updated the original post to indicate that the map is no longer considered new, so it will be much harder to find a game. Also, I'm working on a large patch and I will let everyone know when it is ready.
This map made it to the top page of the popularity game list.
I like this map far better than SotiS(which I absolutely hate) and City of Tempest for the following reasons:
1. Just enough heroes. City of Tempest has...ten million heroes? SotiS, I won't even start on it.
2. Diversity. Different races, different maps, different types of heroes. Unlike City of Tempest, it all boils down to the player with the best luck in spotting your opponent and zip in to cast all your spells at once to kill your victim in 0.1 miliseconds. Not to mention that every hero's the same, too.
3. Just enough action. SotiS is...you need to take your dear time to kill mobs. This is no fun. City of Tempest? It's all about who can spam their spells fastest and BOOM! If you don't see them coming you die in 0.1 seconds. There's no action what-so-ever which is annoying. In Hero Attack, even if under attack there IS a chance for you to escape out alive if you plan things right. You often see duals of two units lasting for quite long, without the spam clicking of CT.
4. Just enough items. When I first play SotiS and opened the items menu, I immediately screamed "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" What on the f**king earth is the map developer THINKING when they add so f**king many ITEMS!? Seriously, apart from a trillion items you can choose, you then get recipes to combine a certain few items for a bigger item. Look, I'm playing sc2 for all the blood and violence. If I want to craft I'd play minecraft. Also the amount of items gives so much boost every single hero in the end game looks EXACTLY THE F**KING SAME. Screw items. While HA also have items they offer not as ridiculously items and every hero still are DIFFERENT in the end game.
Congratz, to the mapmaker. I remember him having such a hard time getting this map appealing to the masses and almost giving up. I also believed it would never get far as SoTIS had too much of a stranglehold.
I spent a month of not playing customs and then I see this near the top surpassing SoTIS and even Desert Strike.

That's the way the game works. That is more of a late game scenario anyways. If you expect you opponents to just push the entire game with their spawned units you're wrong.
Wow, I had no idea this game was so old :D Congrats to the mapmaker!
That being said, I have to say that the majority of heroes that can't attack air are seriously underpowered. And Zerglings/Banelings are not nearly as strong as they should be
I played a few games of this map and it wasn't fun, Some heroes were wayyy Imba but thats to be expected with newish maps, I do like the idea though but not the limit in items just a few more would be fine. But what really annoyed me was no one would play Zerg everyone said they were terrible and I finally got a game with them, And we didn't have a chance Zerg does seem to be terrible if no one plays it. (As I said I only got 1 game with them so can't judge it myself). I played the Hellion in a TvP and it was basically Immortal. "Hey you killing me? Flame boost!" and I'm back at the base in 2-3 seconds. But I'll give it another shot some time, Personally never played the SoTIS however you spell it. Gl with the map.
But maybe they weren't Imba but the other teams just sucked.

Archon -- 8 seconds of invincibility and double move and attack speed? Are you fucking kidding me?!?!
I played for the first time yesterday and chose the Brutalisk hero. He has a leap/charge that stuns the enemy on a very short cooldown. He seemed very overpowered too, although perhaps everyone was a noob like me
Mutalisk is pretty IMBA too. With the energy+ & Regen rate+ I can constantly have about 8 out for about 10 seconds before the 1st 4 batch time out. not to mention spamming up the +all stats that makes me god compared to other noobs who are still farming for their useless items.
Well I played it again and found a bug, I was the Ultralisk and when I would Ram their Ghost player while he was cloaked the Ultralisk chased with auto attack killing the Ghost player without seeing him.
Sorry that I have been unable to check this thread frequently in the past few days. I had to take a trip to the tropical south of Canada (southern Ontario), and have been unable to access the internet frequently.
@closey – thanks for the support. I’m glad you like my design decisions.
Thanks to everyone else as well. I’ll try to improve the balance and add more features.
@ Dustin – thanks for telling me about that bug. I’ll try to fix it.
Has someone mentioned that the preserver doesn't respawn on death? THat is kind of game breaking if you random a preserver... Also, back dooring is extremely powerful as banelings, Dark templars, or ghosts... i've seen games where 1 team has pushed back, and they lose because the banelings keep suiciding into the nexus etc...
Just something to think about... oh, hardened shield item... that thing is STRONG! (maybe too strong? idk... haven't done math)
So yes, please fix preserver.... its not imbalance, the game is just broken...
Just wanted to say a new version is up, no more cheat bugs and lots of fun, games can go from 15 min to an hour. Search for Hero Attack 3X, or just type 3x in the search box it works too.

thank you, I used to have so much fun playing this before it got ruined by cheat bugs and gltiches
It still has some bugs but the new creators are actually updating it on almost daily basis , hopefully more people will play it now. It still takes some time to wait for a full room to go.
