Production. The fact that there was so much down-time between matches suggests something is lacking in the efficiency department. A large variety of options exists:
-Employ a caster ability to tune into the games of other matches during in-between time, even if not to commentate. Have a banner at the top of the screen indicating it's an "in between matches" screening and that it could switch at any moment.
-Add interesting graphics akin to those that appear during ESPN broadcasts during downtime, perhaps with the inclusion of the casters' voices (again similar to say a futbol or football game on TV)
-Have a cameraman walking through the crowd that the main stream can switch to at any moment - combined with headset communication and coordination, casters could stream questions to the audience via this field-cameraman in the crowd and get closeups of the people answering in the audience. I see a lot of potential here for interesting/fun shenanigans.
Basically, with a little creative thought, a great variety of possible improvements exists. We'll see at the next MLG.
p.s. also there could be more seats at the next MLG, according to people that were there live

The free stream was nearly unwatchable for me -- it kept lagging and rewinding every few minutes, especially during the crucial moments leading up to a gg or right when the players made interesting comments in the interviews. I guess the weather breaking the stream wasn't MLG's fault, so we'll have to see if Anaheim can provide a more stable and enjoyable viewing experience -- chances are, the weather in sunny SoCal will not provide an obstacle.
Stream aside, the casting and the quality of competition were excellent; I like the format (extended series are OK I guess, but double elimination is great at ensuring the best players rise to the top), and my other complaints are mostly with certain players basically throwing away games, not with the tournament itself.

With regard to stream quality, I think the majority of the annoyances were due to issues on your end. I only experienced a single hour during which the streams were choppy due to weather issues - other than that I was able to view in HQ at a perfectly consistent rate.

super awesome. but not perfect, as my stream was buffering every 2-3 minutes for like 2 sec
|
Not perfect, I don't think you can have a perfect event (Dreamhack came dangerously close) but was still in the Super Awesome category.
|
super awesome. but for me, the HQ stream wasn't that great. it was choppy and wasn't the high in quality.
but everything else was ace

Really enjoyed it, cant even compare it to the last mlg which was a complete joke

I think this weekend was outstanding,
Nobody likes to call anything perfect, but as far as live events and streamed live events go, I think expecting much more than this (At least as an online-viewer) is asking a bit much.
Minor complaints about the streams being shuffled around at times, and it kinda sucked for the downtimes that still existed, but they were so much less frequent, I think people complaining about watching the crowd for 5-10 minutes are forgetting waiting for B.net for 3-4 hours for the finals, or casters having to fill several minutes between each match because there wasn't another match they could jump in on mid-way.
Bringing the Koreans over seemed odd if you listen to SotG, there were a lot of valid concerns, but I think it really mixed it up in a good way.
I loved IdrA this event? Wait... what did I just say? He showed us an outstanding new side in terms of SC2 play in the opening matches against MC, and totally played up the rivalry/confidence right before the finals - made for a lot of sweet .gifs and videos for youtube I'm sure.
Some of the stream connectivity issues could be better... but not much can always be done about that. Also it sounds like they need more chairs? If those are the only complaints you can make of a live event, I'd call it perfect. If MLG improved some things, I'd love it, but I think expecting more than this as a baseline is hard, the Starcraft community is awesome, but woefully cynical, and I think it is important to keep that in mind in these threads.

Stream inconsistency was really frustrating, but the games were great and the commentary was on point.

Honestly, I haven't been able to get the song out of my head. I am prepared to sue Microsoft if this becomes a lingering condition. "Yoehyoehyoooo, weee can't be defeated!" ahhhhhhhhhhh! Who is this lame band? Why are they all in robes? Why didn't they let those nice people in the elevator? Oh crap, I'm losing it
Not to mention that commercial would be 10x louder than the stream or other commercials.

the one thing i think MLG is missing is a proper schedule on the website of what is being casted and when. As i was watching from home and loved the content, i just couldnt find out what content was up next

Extended series is stupid. HQ stream is in really bad quality. Production is lacking overall compared to DHI or GSL. We didn't get to see rematch of Thorzain vs MC (stupid extended series as well) even though Tastosis had nothing to cast at the time, instead we got to wait and watch a ZvZ from the same round later on...

All it needs to improve in is:
- Better transitions!
- Never ever leave the screen to show just black for over 1 second!
- Player reactions exactly after the gg!
- BETTER CASTERS!!!!! THEY ALL SUCKED!!!!
+ Show Spoiler +I am off course just jocking about the casters! By far the best casting team ever assembled for a tournament! Tastosis+DjWheat+Day9=total awesomeness!
Other than that it was by far the best SC2 tournament to date and the closest to a real GLOBAL StarLeague. NASL is the only other competition which comes close to MLG being a real GLOBAL StarLeague.

Well done. Much better than previous events. Not perfect though, still some things to work out.
|
Koreans made it worthwhile... oh and Idra! Actually, it was great to have the interaction between Idra - MC... it just added some real hype!!!! thanks MC and Idra... I still don't like the format... the extended series issue and Bo3... esp when you consider the Loser's final was between two players who hadn't met before, it would have been much better to up the anty for those games... Bo5 for sure!

Player lag was an issue as far as I could see. As far as most everything else it was really nice but I'm concerned about lag affecting an event to a point as the matches aren't truly representative of skill. I know about all the "the lag was the same for everyone" but that is some true BS. Just one hickup at the wrong specific time can really screw you over. Plus different races and playstyles are differently affected by lag. It seems the events who provide lag-free games of quite regularity and reliability are GSL and Dreamhack. Maybe a few others but those are what comes to mind.
I haven't played SC2 or BW competitevily but I have played CS and latency and different aspects really can spoil events and important games.
edit: Oh yeah, the 30% increase in volume for the commercials was really really annoying.
|
I would say good but not great. I think the crowd, players, casters, and quality of games were indeed super awesome but there's still a lot to improve upon on other fronts.
|
Needs more chairs and to move the booths a bit further apart, because if you were on the left side you got no minimap @.@
HOWEVER: Such a damn amazing time there soo glad I went.
