CNC Zero Hour (amazing), with intervals of CNC3 (crap) and RA3 (ok). Though to be honest, immediately before SC2 came out I was playing TF2 and Quake Live.

You can still play RA2 online. When EA dropped the Westwood servers they gave control to Xwis. It should just automatically take you to their servers, without you even noticing. Their website is here.

Wow, 3k+ RTS complete beginners and even more dedicated WC3 players. Only 1/3rd of TL now are core BW? That was quick, haha.
edit: actually now that I recall the stats about 200% increase of visitors (if I remember correctly), then the count suits it perfectly, so no surprise really. The funny part is, there may be people with only SC2 background who become more interested in BW here.

If the question didn't have the "past 5 years" thing I would have not answered what I did.
I played nearly every RTS from Dune 2 to WC3 (didn't like the Command and Conquer series though). Then I stopped playing altogether, and then I played WoW for three years.

For me WC3. But I played other RTS too like Tiberium Wars, RA3 and some older ones like Emperor Battle for Dune.

Warcraft III... though my total career was only about 200 solo's so not very hardcore. I spent most of my time playing MMO's and DotA and RPG's....
Starcraft II is my first serious RTS. I don't play video games anymore... I play starcraft.

i put sc2 was my first, though I played a fair amount of SC1/BW/WC2-3 I mostly played the single player missions and didn't do a lot of vs player stuff.

In the past 5 years it was only DoW. It was the game that first got me started playing competitively.
Before that I played Netstorm and AoE.

I was missing the option for not played RTS past 5years but played brood war before that

Dune 2000 and Dark Reign.

BW and AOE2 were the first RTSes I took seriously

I voted mostly SC:BW, although I have had a few months experience dabbling in WC3:FT

A mix of SC:BW and DoW in my case. Always enjoyed WH40K so enjoyed that one
Since SC Ive tried an immense number of different RTSes, cant remember half of them but it was always SC that stuck
