MSL Group A

With top representatives of the three races, plus cannon fodder in the form of a cuddly cherub, this group shaped up to be one of the best in the current MSL. The hype / live report thread can be found here, with an excellent OP by Aesop.

Set I
(Z)Jaedong vs (P)Bisu

+ Show Spoiler [game comments] +
Despite hardware issues, Jaedong presented a dominant exposition in the debut game for Arena MSL, leading from start to finish. His early zerglings forced Bisu to think defensively, his hydralisks fended off the feared dark templar, and the mutalisks came just in time to block Kim’s dragoon/high templar assault.

From then on, the push against Bisu’s third followed by the one-two combination against main and natural ended the brutal, one-sided farce of a match. Many audience members may have expected a longer, closer match akin to their previous Blue Storm meeting, but instead saw a vicious rape.

Set II
(T)Hwasin vs (T)FrOzean

+ Show Spoiler [Game comments] +

FrOzean likes his cheese; Hwasin, knowing this, made a slightly early barracks. That sums up the entire progression of the game, as FrOzean was never able to catch up and Hwasin dispatched him at leisure. Aside from some cute wraith moves by FrOzean, this was a rather dull and uninspired game.

I am glad, though, that Hwasin prevailed.

Winners' Set
(Z)Jaedong vs (T)Hwasin

+ Show Spoiler [Game comments] +

What could have been a great set was spoiled by Jaedong’s incredibly horrid mouse. You could tell his control was off all game, as his mutalisks failed to demonstrate their usual vigor and his lurkers were no problem, being above the land.

All in all a stupid game. Jaedong should have switched mice. Hwasin played standard – nothing spectacular – but Jaedong’s absolutely atrocious control would probably have let FrOzean win as well.

Losers' Set
(P)Bisu vs (T)FrOzean

+ Show Spoiler [Game comments] +

Lacklustre performance by Bisu meets even worse by Frozean. Bisu’s PvT showed none of its GOM-2 form, but Frozean’s dawdling allowed Bisu to win a painfully drawn-out match.

Final Set
(Z)Jaedong vs (P)Bisu

+ Show Spoiler [Game comments] +

Another ridiculous stompfest, as Jaedong’s zerg proves way too much for Bisu to handle. The scout lings, the muta-scourge control, the hydra sniping, everything was just perfectly done with Jaedong’s new Logitech Optical Mini. The only thing missing was a successful shuttle kill; if one more hit impacted then that would have been quite amazing.

As it is, Bisu is once again eliminated from his first group, and the defending MSL champ moves on to the ro16.

Results

Jaedong > Bisu
Hwasin > Frozean
Hwasin > Jaedong
Bisu > Frozean
Jaedong > Bisu

(T)Hwasin and (Z)Jaedong advance.

The better players advanced. All is right with the world. The only regret is Jaedong vs Hwasin; without mouse issues it could have been a great game. A TvZ master and ZvT master on a new gas-heavy strategic-oriented map – a recipe for great games. Hopefully we'll be treated to it later on in MSL.

Love and luck,
LR

1st post, nice read.

I knew Bisu was going to get eliminated and liquibetted him anyways.

Hwsain finally gets wins because he shows homage to savior.

Yes, Group A was a bit disappointing. Thought the BEST games of the MSL would be in Group A. But no problem, imo I think Group E was quite an exciting group! Not to say the games weren't horrendous, but they just weren't up to my expectations. Let's wait for Group B now ( 5 PvPs )

Ugh, Bisu follows the same fate as July...

Although I'm glad Hwasin advanced, I wish he could've won in a more spectacular fashion especially in Hwasin vs. Jaedong.

Kind of disappointing we didn't get a Bisu/Hwasin match. I wanted to see Hwasin stomp the living hell out of Bisu. As of right now "Insurance" Hwasin is playing a hell of a lot better than the "Revolutionist".

I do agree that the best players advanced.

great write-up! This should teach Bisu to act with a little more humility, as he got curbstomped by Jaedong 2x. Pwnt.

Question: i can't access the VODs on TL.Net, but if i d ouble click to open link, they work fine on youtube. Is this a continuation of Baezzi controversy?

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention thanks for the writeup! And yeah, that must suck sooooo bad for Bisu. He put himself in Much's place only to get pwned 2-0. Now he's 0-3 vs Jaedong huh? I would be very depressed if I were him

funny thing is, if bisu didn't try to protect his teammate during selection, hwasin wouldn't be switched into his group, then JD 1st, and bisu might get 2nd and advance, o well, at least it was nice of him.

Bisu played horribly, which is a depressing thing. Picking this group seemed like an attempt by him to get something going, it didn't work so well.

I THINK the english COMMENTARY needs to be done on top of the audio for the Korean commentary, with the korean commentary slightly toned down in volume.

THIS will have the cheering and shit happening in the back, and also it'll have people screaming in the back. YOU NEED THAT in commentaries to make it epic. the ENGLISH commentary sounds so much less intense because there is no cheering in the back

Nice write-up LR! I'd disagree with SuperiorWolf who said the games weren't bad. The games were dreadful. I didn't know Jaedong had mouse issues, but his control against Hwasin was as bad as any new-pro's control. The Bisu vs Jaedong games were one-sided, and the only thing nice about those games were Jaedong's amazing ZvP style.

And Frozean, recently I have a bit more faith in him, but he once again proved that along with Backho he is one of the least strategic/intelligent progamers around. Bisu does a darky build into a double expand with arbiters at the same time, all at the same time, and Frozean decides that the optimal strategy would be to turtle? I mean, Bisu has just spend ton of resources on a failed darky build, and then spent 800 more resources on the double expand, and then another 700 or so on getting Arbiters, which means you should have 7 tanks or 20 vultures more than Bisu can handle, and you fucking turtle. Sigh.

One thing I've noticed about Bisu recently is that he can't macro from a normal build. If Bisu doesn't do very risky expansion builds (ala vs Frozean), then he is always behind in macro. He always does that, and I think it's just a matter of time before other players take advantage of this in his other matchups (they already do in his PvZ).

Anyway, interesting group, but bad games. Best players went through though!

They aren't, just click on the video, it'll open a new tab and the video will run.

On another note, FUCK YOU BISU! I said this a lot of times but he just keeps fucking up. I still hope he'll manage to get over this.

That's true... now that I think about it. No way Bisu would've dropped both games to Frozean and Fantasy, and I doubt JD would've either. At least it was an honorable way of going out.

Bisu has always risked, but his sence and micro had always saved him (mainly in PvT).
Well for his PvZ it is really terrible right now, he is trying other build types, like dt without sair and reavers... He is not good at it now, and his multitasking got worse.
Reminds me of RA's slump.

But we didn't see that much magic from jaedong eigher, suppose bisu did really crappy in both matches(especially the first one) and jaedong did really bad vs Hwasin(although you blame his mouse).

Perhaps I have seen too much hate/love in your report much too clearly LR - hate Frozean, love Hwasin, even more love Jaedong, even more hate Bisu.
But I think It will get better overtime.

jaedong may of been at a bit of a disadvantage against Hwasin because of his mouse, but not ridiculously so. He wasn't able to perform at his normal level, and could of done more damage- sure. But saying its purely because of the mouse is an excuse, he simply got beat. He was behind throughout the game. Jaedong losing to Frozean because of his control....waaah? It wasn't Jaedong level control, but it certainly wasn't *garbage*. He simply lost, the mouse helped that but it wasn't the main reason

ScarFace, looking at that game I'm willing to say Jaedong lost 100% because of mouse issues. When I watched that game the first time I didn't know he had mouse issues, and I was laughing at how badly he controlled all his units. I literally thought that Jaedong's dominating streak has come to an end, so bad was his control.

Him having mouse issues is a lot more logical than him losing his touch to that extent in a few weeks.

hmm, well I will watch the game again to see how bad his control is. I don't remember it being THAT bad, but I could be wrong.

Anyhow Jeadong hasent been on fire vs T but he his zvz and zvp is superb. Hwasin has always been a amazing player but has tendecy to be unconsistens and that is a key issu if you want to win titels.

Bisu is one of those players I only like because he's good. But that hasn't been the case lately, so I guess it's time to let him die in my mind.

But I guess on that note, Lucifer become new KTF Protoss God gogo!

What Daigomi noted is the thing that concerns me. Bisu has the macromanagement ability to play a straight up game, but as it stands right now he keeps going for these builds and playing poorly otherwise. He has the ability to win using 'normal' builds as he has done before, I just don't know if Bisu has the faith in his own abilities to use it anymore.

It's really hurting him in his PvZ, which makes me think he's lost a lot of confidence in his PvZ, and that is having the flow on effects. Hopefully he puts himself back together soon.

LJD clicks burrow it seems. That is why his lurkers just stood there while Hwasin killed them.

Yeah, I figured he was just distraught that the game was so close, and lost his nerve. His muta micro is where its telling hes either having problems with his mouse or his confidence. Considering his OSL run, im willing to bet its a bit of both. But he will probably be fine from now on, so long as he doesn't lose anymore straight up games.

obviously it's an evil circle, if he noticed something wrong with the mouse he probably got frustrated and couldn't keep his cool and therefore plays even worse
