.dragoon’s Live Report Thread

Back in 2002, Yellow and V-Gundam faced off in the finals of an OGN special event, the 2nd King of Kings tournament. Though both players were professionals who had made it to the finals by virtue of merit, their games made it glaringly obvious that Yellow was the superior player; he thrashed Gundam in three completely one-sided games. Whether it was Yellow’s multitasking, micromanagement, or game management, Gundam simply couldn’t keep pace with Yellow. It was as if Yellow couldn’t do anything wrong. When Gundam took off his headphones, his look was one of confusion and resignation.

Jaedong vs. Up reminded me of that series.

On Persona, Up went for a vulture build with a quick speed upgrade. Jaedong opted for a very fast two-hatch mutalisk opening. Instead of keeping his mutalisks around his base to prevent any prolonged vulture harassment, however, Jaedong sent them to counter-attack Up’s main. Though Jaedong ended the game with only a tiny handful of drones, his mutalisks completely denied Up the ability to mine; as close as the game seemed at the time, Jaedong’s win was guaranteed.

Who needs drones?

The second game of Up and Jaedong’s Bo5 took place on Blue Storm. Up faked a marine and medic build by using his academy to wall off his entrance. In reality, he was hard at work on two starports. An ever-growing fleet of wraiths proceeded to take down overlord after overlord as they pecked away from time to time at Jaedong’s drones.

Note Jaedong’s sunken colony, which had to have been an accident.

By the time Jaedong had a handle on Up’s harassment, Up had secured his natural expansion and was pumping marines and medics from five barracks.

But it didn’t really matter.

Using only mutalisks, Jaedong killed entire battalions of marines, demolished missile turrets, and most importantly, kept Up’s economy from reaching even a fraction of its potential. I was chatting with mrmin123 as the game aired, and he said, “The commentators just said that if Jaedong wins, the fact that Up was so far ahead becomes really embarrassing.” I have to agree; by the end of the game, I was cringing at the thought of being in Up’s position.

An all-too-familiar sight when Jaedong is playing.

Up and Jaedong’s game on Fantasy was an exclamation point on the end of a one-sided series. Up spawned at the lower-right position and made a command center when his supply count reached 14, walling off his choke with two barracks a little while later. Jaedong responded by making a large number of speed-upgraded zerglings, sending two drones to mine out the small mineral wall at Up’s natural, and swarming in from that undefended angle for an easy win.

Sorry, Up, but this just wasn’t your day.

Next week, we’re beating treated to a Bo5 rematch of the MSL finals from earlier this year. Stork will be looking for revenge, and Bisu will be looking to prove that he hasn’t lost a step since his upset loss against Mind in the most-recent MSL. Will Stork’s superior PvP statistics be the deciding factor, or will Bisu’s undeniable champion spirit clinch him yet another spot in the finals? And perhaps most importantly, will Stork remember to research dragoon range?

Predictions
+ Show Spoiler +
When one is given two players of such a high caliber and the sheer randomness of PvP, it becomes exceedingly difficult to choose a winner. But I’m going to do it anyway, because I believe that Stork’s PvP is just plain better than Bisu’s. Using a law of statistics that I just made up, Stork should win this series and their next one to compensate for losing the first. I call it Etter’s Law of Justice in Luck-Based Matchups.

You are totally right, this series looked nowhere as close as "OSL Semis" suggests. Nothing to blame Upmagic for, he fought his way into the Semis legitimately, but in these games he was demolished. It might have helped him take at least one game if he had gone for more standard play from time to time. JD vs. Light showed that JD sometimes overextends himself with his management skills and can be taken down by a plain push once you have survived the harassment. But that might have been one game, not three.

Nice writeup!
And I predict Stork for next week's winner because Bisu can't win an OSL until he wins his third MSL!

I feel sorry for Up. He had the 2nd game, but after the embarrassing turn-over the 3rd game was just pre-decided.

Bisu should win against Stork, but in a very close games is my opinion.

After the game, I felt that Estro should be put to the grave or something that would let Up come to a better team and learn how to maximize his potential. Cause he has so much of it.

I hope Stork beats Bisu, after his ridiculous loss in MSL survivor he needs to win this to redeem himself.

I can't agree that Stork will beat Bisu. It is very notable that Bisu sucks during the proleague, showing he obviously doesn't put in nearly as much practice time into it compared to individual leagues. I admit his showing against free was very one-sided, and he lost badly, but take a look at the MSL finals again from last year.

The first and second game showed Bisu taking immediate economical advantages directly from the opening with zealot micro. The first game, though they had the same build, Bisu took out Stork's freaking natural expo. The second game showed Bisu taking out 4 probes with just 1 zealot.

The third game, Stork managed to get something like SEVEN zealots into Bisu's base, though only killing a few probes.

Nobody doubts that Stork is an amazing player, but I get the feeling he becomes nervous when facing the STRONGEST players (e.g. Savior, Bisu...). Bisu plays to the best of his ability regardless of who he plays, so I feel the matches will be very one-sided against Stork in normal games. Stork only won two games off Bisu using better builds.

I get the feeling bisu actually performs better when he plays against proven good players, as if he's more motivated prove that he is even better or something. Against sub-astonishing opponents he often disappoints.

I'd like to add a corollary to Etter's Law of Justice in Luck-Based Matchups; "When one of the players is Bisu, said player automatically wins".

Winning the OSL is easy! I predict Jaedong to be victorious.
And who can blame him. His play is phenomenal, clearly *the* best zerg player atm.

Also I predict Stork for finals =)

If series were Rock vs Bisu and Rock won, I bet many of us would have hard time picking a favorite. Remember Rock's "Roarrrrr"? After weakest mu vs weakest mu Rock vs Jaedong Starchallenge final... I sense randomness.

I think games will go like this.
Bisu > Stork 3-0
Jaedong > Bisu 3-0

Bisu might beat Jaedong in one game if he can do a proxy 2 gate or something...maybe. But Jaedong Mutas > Bisu Corsairs, even if Bisu dual stargates. And DTs/Reavers won't mean anything against superior mutalisks.

Haha jk..
3-2 stork > bisu
3-1 stork > jaedong

The 2nd game was the best game overall because I thought Jaedong would lose for sho, but then he came back to wipe out Up's natural, very exciting. The ling manuever on the last match was also great because you knew what was gonna happen but Up's was clueless.

Thanks for the report.
Shorts down shorts up, BOOM, just like that.
