Koreans Rock, but aren't rewarded in the tournament stage.

The day ended with the live audience cheering after receiving a pleasant surprise as England's BlinG upset Korean TvP specialist Polt by a score of 2 – 0. It was one the handful of surprises on the day, though the Korean domination went mostly as expected.

Koreans advance; face each other in the bracket

PuMa, HerO, JYP, TaeJa, Lucky, and Polt all advanced from their groups, with HerO going through to the round of sixteen as the only player with a perfect 6 – 0 record. The Koreans were untroubled for the most part, though a few of them struggled with their weak match-ups. Strelok's solid Terran play proved to be too much for Lucky, while PvT was turned out to be JYP's Achilles heel for the umpteenth time as he dropped a series to DieStar.

JYP and Polt were unable to advance as first place in their groups, and were made to rue it as they drew their Korean brethren in the second round. A single quadrant of the RO16 bracket contains Taeja vs Polt and HerO vs JYP, guaranteeing early knock outs for three of the players who were considered favorites to win it all.

Moon eclipsed

There was one Korean who did not live up to the hype. Moon rode in amidst much speculation about how well he would play after taking a lengthy hiatus from Starcraft II, and many believed the Warcraft III legend could make a triumphant return. It was not to be, as Moon proved to be terribly out of shape, getting eliminated with a 1 – 6 record.

Mild success for Finland, and some foreigner surprises

While Stephano and MaNa showed they deserved to be called favorites by breaking through the group of death, there were unexpected performances abound in the other groups.

Finland's very own Welmu advanced second place in his group, outpacing European giant Kas, and rising star TitaN. Welmu was able to pass through with the narrowest of margins, his 3 – 4 map score being one point better than Kas's 3 – 5. Welmu's countryman elfi also made it through his group in interestingly similar fashion. elfi's 4 – 5 map score was enough to edge out both Jinro and Adelscott, who both had records of 3 – 5. Though Welmu and elfi just barely advanced, it was still a surprising result for the host country who were not expected to do well without Naama competing.

In other groups, DieStar and ClouD finally managed to manifest their online skills in a live tournament, beating Koreans on their way to first place group finishes. Bischu found his way out of a tough group that contained Lucky, Strelok, and Bly, proving he was the best of the three foreigners by defeating the others.

Day One Live Update Log

+ Show Spoiler [Update Log] +

21:34 GMT (+00:00): That's all for today folks! Cya tomorrow ^_^

21:19 GMT (+00:00): Bling 2 - 0 Polt. After an all-out war, BlinG finally manages to beat Polt. Well played on both sides.

20:50 GMT (+00:00): BlinG 1 - 0 Polt. Two-Rax into expand doesn't work so well against someone who knows how to use his gateway units and forcefields

20:43 GMT (+00:00): Polt vs BlinG begins! Should be awesome ^_^

20:20 GMT (+00:00): Polt 2 - 1 TLO. TLO puts up a good fight, but Polt is just too good.

19:59 GMT (+00:00): Polt 1 - 1 TLO. TLO baneling busted and rode it to victory, though it was messy and took quite a long time to finish him off.

19:56 GMT (+00:00): BlinG 2 - 1 Phoenix. BlinG had a 6 gate scouted and totally repelled, then he held off a nydus and macro'd up to win with big blink stalker+immortal army.

19:46 GMT (+00:00): Polt 1 - 0 TLO. Polt built up a series of small advantages through better control and massing marines, rolled over TLO's expansions to win.

19:34 GMT (+00:00): TLO vs Polt begins on Antiga!

19:29 GMT (+00:00): BlinG 1 - 1 Phoenix. Phoenix headed into late game by making an ultralisk army, which put him near defeat after a few bad engagements. He then transitions into brood lords, which promptly crushed BlinG's army and tied the series up at 1-1.

19:08 GMT (+00:00): BlinG 1 - 0 Phoenix. Phoenix took an early lead by denying BlinG's third, but he held constant roach attacks with blink stalkers and won a war of attrition.

18:59 GMT (+00:00): Taeja 2 - 0 Jinro. Bit of an early-ish GG from Jinro, but Taeja pulled ahead in the mid-game and I guess it was too hard to make a comeback.

18:50 GMT (+00:00): Taeja 1 - 0 Jinro. Jinro went mech, and died when Taeja hit a bio timing.

18:48 GMT (+00:00): Strelok 2 - 0 Bly. Despite a clever moment where Bly burrows his entire army and pops out while Strelok is walking over, the Terran overpowers when he is able to take and deny more bases than Bly.

18:21 GMT (+00:00): Lucky 2 - 0 Bischu. Unstreamed result via Liquipedia.

18:17 GMT (+00:00): Strelok 1 - 0 Bly. Strelok kills a lot of drones with mass hellion early, plays patiently by denying expos and not letting Bly leave his nat and starves him out.

18:16 GMT (+00:00): Elfi 2 - 1 Jinro. Elfi gets an early lead by canceling robo post-scouting and making gateways, then draws game out and rides upgrade advantage to win.

17:56 GMT (+00:00): Elfi 1 - 1 Jinro. Crazy game, almost an hour long coming down to the last minerals. Jinro wins in the end due to a planetary at the very last base as both players are down to their last handful of units, and Elfi has to attack with probes.

17:48 GMT (+00:00): Lucky 2 - 0 Bly. Unstreamed result via Liquipedia.

17:43 GMT (+00:00): BlinG 2 - 0 TLO. Unstreamed result via Liquipedia.

17:36 GMT (+00:00): Bischu 2 - 0 Strelok. Unstreamed result via Liquipedia.

17:23 GMT (+00:00): Polt 2 - 0 Phoenix. Polt takes an early lead with drops, Phoenix climbs back with good fungals only to finally fall when Polt drops the main while attacking the front.

17:21 GMT (+00:00): Taeja 2 - 0 Adelscott. Unstreamed result via Liquipedia.

17:20 GMT (+00:00): Elfi 1 - 0 Jinro: Nice warp prism build by Elfi bypasses Jinro's early CC and bunker.

17:07 GMT (+00:00): Satiini 2 - 1 White-Ra. Unstreamed result via Liquipedia

17:07 GMT (+00:00): Bischu 2 - 1 Bly. Unstreamed result via Liquipedia

17:07 GMT (+00:00): Polt 1 - 0 Phoenix. Polt kills a lot of drones with hellions and goes on to win with his first push.

16:52 GMT (+00:00): Diestar 2 - 1 JYP, unstreamed result via Liquipedia

16:52 GMT (+00:00): Lucky 1 - 2 Strelok. Strelok does a lot of damage with banshees, and wins through killing Lucky's third.

16:39 GMT (+00:00): Taeja 2 - 1 Elfi. Taeja denies the third several times to go into late game with a lead, then beats up Elfi's colossus-HT army with superior income and multi-pronged attacks.

16:34 GMT (+00:00): Lucky 1 - 1 Strelok. Strelok fends off a roach-bane bust successfully but loses in the long game to infestor brood lord.

16:18 GMT (+00:00): Jinro 2 - 1 Adelscott (unstreamed). Strelok 1 - 0 Lucky with some nice drops and macro.

16:07 GMT (+00:00): Taeja 1 - 1 Elfi. Elfi takes the lead in game 2 with some really nice forcefields against Taeja's early game marine attack, and makes colossus to keep his advantage.

15:58 GMT (+00:00): White-Ra 1 - 1 DieStar. Unstreamed Liquipedia update.

15:56 GMT (+00:00): Taeja 1 - 0 Elfi. Taeja denies the third repeatedly while taking his own and splitting Elfi's forces, until he maxes out and wins.

15:47 GMT (+00:00): sYz 2 - 0 Sieplo, unstreamed result via Liquipedia.

15:37 GMT (+00:00): HerO 2 - 0 SeleCT. Select goes for early marine pressure, during which HerO slips a zealot into Select's mineral line and kills some SCVs and marines. When HerO fends off the presure and counters Select GGs.

15:25 GMT (+00:00): HerO 1 - 0 SeleCT. HerO brings it to late game and wins with a combination of colossus and HTs.

15:19 GMT (+00:00): Cloud 2 - 1 Moon. ClouD and ReaL advance from Group C.

15:15 GMT (+00:00): Group D update: SeleCT 2 - 1 Seiplo, SeleCT 2 - 1 sYz.

15:13 GMT (+00:00): Unstreamed match updates. Moon 1 - 1 Cloud, ReaL 2 - 0 Brat_OK. ReaL advances, not decided if he's #1 or #2 of the group yet.

15:07 GMT (+00:00): DieStar 2 - 0 Satiini. One player built more tanks and marines than the other player.

14:56 GMT (+00:00): JYP 2 - 1 White-Ra. Both players drop each other with immortals. White-Ra loses his prism first, and JYP gets a larger colossus army to kill him in their large battle.

14:42 GMT (+00:00): JYP 1 - 1 White-Ra. White-Ra drops JYP repeatedly while they engage, and is able to pull ahead in army supply and bring the series to even.

14:27 GMT (+00:00): Cloud 1 - 0 Moon. Hero 2 - 0 Seiplo. @TeamLiquidLIVE unstreamed match updates.

14:24 GMT (+00:00): JYP 1 - 0 White-Ra. Players split map and max out, White-Ra getes the worst of it in an engagement despite having a mothership and JYP's huge colossus force takes the game.

14:19 GMT (+00:00): Stephano 2 - 0 MaNa. Early runby lets Stephano take a strong lead and ride it all the way to victory. Stephano takes #1 in Group B.

14:06 GMT (+00:00): Stephano 1 - 0 MaNa. Stephano maxes out quickly and relentlessly throws units at MaNa, delaying and denying the third repeatedly while he takes the map to win.

Group F Match Recaps
+ Show Spoiler [Group F Match Recaps] +

15:00 GMT (+00:00) Taeja vs elfi- - SETT TV
  • Game One: Taeja denies the third repeatedly while taking his own and splitting Elfi's forces, until he maxes out and wins.

  • Game Two: Elfi takes the lead in game 2 with some really nice forcefields against Taeja's early game marine attack, and makes colossus to keep his advantage. Taeja makes a small comeback but Elfi finally clinches it.

  • Game Three: 16:39 GMT (+00:00): Taeja 2 - 1 Elfi. Taeja denies the third several times to go into late game with a lead, then beats up Elfi's colossus-HT army with superior income and multi-pronged attacks.

  • Taeja 2 - 1 Elfi.

16:00 GMT (+00:00) elfi- vs Jinro - SETT TV
  • Game One: Nice warp prism build by Elfi bypasses Jinro's early CC and bunker.

  • Game Two: Crazy game, almost an hour long coming down to the last minerals. Jinro wins in the end due to a planetary at the very last base as both players are down to their last handful of units, and Elfi has to attack with probes.

  • Game Three: Elfi gets an early lead by canceling robo post-scouting and making gateways, then draws game out and rides upgrade advantage to win.

  • Elfi 1 - 1 Jinro.

17:00 GMT (+00:00) Taeja vs Jinro - SETT TV
  • Game One: Jinro went mech, and died when Taeja hit a bio timing.

  • Game Two: Taeja's bio was better than Jinro's mech yet again.

  • Taeja 2 - 0 Jinro

  • Game One: Nice drops and macro by Strelok takes the game.

  • Game Two: Strelok fends off a roach-bane bust successfully but loses in the long game to infestor brood lord.

  • Game Three: Strelok does a lot of damage with banshees, and wins through killing Lucky's third.

  • Lucky 1 - 2 Strelok.

18:00 GMT (+00:00) Strelok vs Bly - SETT TV 2
  • Game One: Strelok kills a lot of drones with mass hellion early, plays patiently by denying expos and not letting Bly leave his nat and starves him out.

18:00 GMT (+00:00) Polt vs PhoeNix - SETT TV
  • Game One: Polt kills a lot of drones with hellions and goes on to win with his first push.

  • Game Two: Polt takes an early lead with drops, Phoenix climbs back with good fungals only to finally fall when Polt drops the main while attacking the front.

  • Polt 2 - 1 PhoeNix.

19:00 GMT (+00:00) Polt vs TLO - SETT TV
  • Game One: Polt built up a series of small advantages through better control, and rolled over TLO's expansions to win.

  • Game Two: TLO baneling busted and rode it to victory, though it was messy and took quite a long time to finish him off.

  • Game Three: Polt defeats TLO once more, though TLO put up a good fight.

  • Polt 2 - 1 TLO

19:00 GMT (+00:00) BlinG vs PhoeNix - SETT TV 2
  • Game One: Phoenix took an early lead by denying BlinG's third, but he held constant roach attacks with blink stalkers and won a war of attrition.

  • Game Two: Phoenix headed into late game by making an ultralisk army, which put him near defeat after a few bad engagements. He then transitions into brood lords, which promptly crushed BlinG's army and tied the series up at 1-1.

  • Game Three: BlinG had a 6 gate scouted and totally repelled, then he held off a nydus and macro'd up to win with big blink stalker+immortal army.

  • BlinG 2 - 1 Phoenix.

Polt vs BlinG - SETT TV
  • Game One: Polt opened with a two rax attack build that BlinG easily thwarted. Expanding behind it was too greedy a move for Polt, and Bling counter attacked for an easy win.

  • Game Two: Quite the epic duel between the two, with multiple momentum swings and action spread across the map. BlinG was just the better player in the end, and took down the TvP specialist.

  • BlinG 2 - 0 Polt

Awesome changes/LR. One request - can the maps be given at the beginning of the LR? It's not clear, for instance, if Puma's switch from mech to marine/tank was based on a read/style or the map.

Am I the only one who's laughing at the nick Puma is playing? "Saastainen".

If I had to use the word "saastainen" (a finnish word by the way) It would most likely be in a sentence where I describe a room with feces spread all over the walls or something.

On the side not. Can TL twitter give a bit more info about non-streamed games apart from the score?

TitaN won 2-0 versus Kas. The game marked as loss in B.Net was interrupted by disconnect. TitaN still has no chanses to make it through, since even if Puma beats Welmu, mutual score between three players will be 3-2 Welmu, 2-2 Kas, 2-2 TitaN, so Welmu will advance.

I'm excited since sometimes all i want to do is follow brackets and having liquid coverage makes that experience so much better.

also have to say that i hardly notice the wider format nowadays. Graphics are getting slicker and it feels hardly anything has changed.

Really cool, I'm pretty happy that the spoiler policy was changed. If I visit some sports pages, i can see the results and no one cries "LOL SPOILERS".

Also Protoss can now build Marines?

during which HerO slips a marine into his mineral line and kills some SCVs and marines.

:D

For the minority that still want to visit TL without spoilers, here's how:
- Hide Spoiler [Spoiler Process] -
1. Check the box at the bottom left of the front page, "hide spoilers."
This will hide the Featured News and Community News sidebars, as well as hide any titles with spoilers on the front page, whether in images or in the TL articles or the Community News and Headlines section.

2. Register an account and collapse the forums (typically SC2 and SC2 Tournaments) that will have spoilers in their thread titles.

I'm completely confused as to how welmu went through instead of Kas... I know it is in finland etc but this seems over biased..; Head to head ussually takes priority over map score? Or was this not the case here? I just hope that the players were informed. It's a shame since Kas is a threat to anyone whereas Welmu will probably get knocked out in the round of 16 (no offence intended it's just he is definately not on the same level as Kas- very few are).

looks like Welmu beat Kas in bracket placement with map score by 1 less loss
wow competition must be freakin' fierce today if Kas and White-Ra didn't make it through :O
i'm also a little sad that Moon got 0-3 in his group, was hoping he would make a resurgence at this event.

It's a tournament, and today Welmu had a better performance. Kas may usually be a bigger threat but reputation is not what counts here.

Map scores are the first tiebreaker in almost every single tournament, including this one. Head-to-head only comes into play in case the map scores are the same.

Polt advances, no matter what since he took 1 game from TLO.

Even if he loses out to TLO and Bling he will be 3-4 in mapscore, tied with Phoenix, but since Polt beat Phoenix he will advance anyway...can make him green.
