Trust TeamLiquid.net to always bring you the best in StarCraft coverage. Right now the news conference with the korean gamers is going on, but I went straight to the source. Would I let you people down?

After his complete annihilation of Midas in this years $25,000 WCG final, I managed to corner the new champ and ask him a couple questions before the throng of adoring fans descended upon him with pens and shirts to sign.

Through a translator: (who was gorgeous)

Congratulations on winning this years WCG, you looked pretty really relaxed for all your games. Are you always this relaxed when you play?

Not this relaxed, but no pressure here.

This is a different environment from OGN StarLeague for sure. How much practice did you put into this tournament compared to OGN play?

I dont have to practice for this tournament. Same team members, and I played at the hotel.

On the second game versus Midas, you went 14 CC while he went 2 port. What did you think of his build?

It was too slow. Bad. I already could cover my base.

When you were here, you got a chance to see non-korean gamers that you dont normally see in Korea, did anyone stand out?

Giyom.

Yes, every Korean progamer says Giyom. Your matches were over so quickly that you had lots of time to wait at your computer for the next round. I saw that you watched many replays, did anyone else look good to you?

Androide and Mondragon.

Do you play any non-koreans in Korea? Do you now of the foreigner StarCraft community?

I know mondragon, I think his play is good. I dont play non-koreans ever.

Any predictions on your match against Reach in StarLeague next week? Will you win?

I think so.

No no no , you WILL win! I have faith in you!

Haha, ok.

So do you ever play battle.net or other public servers?

No.

Will you play me on battle.net?

No.

After a bout of pleading and begging, and a little crying, I then went on to describe teamliquid.net and what we do. Xellos seemed amazed that we were discussing him back before he graduated high-school (find this HERE in the mensrea interview with Elky) I described the game reporting, liquibet, and the community in general, and how rabid foreign fans were about Korean progaming. He seemed genuinely impressed, and I gave him my card, making him promise to come and post on the forum. Aso, translator lady, please visit if you are reading this, you are so mannered and so beautiful.

Congratulations again, and thanks you very much.

Thank you.

Xellos was really mannered, especially because he got mobbed outside the venue with people wanting his autographs. I guess he is used to it, coming from korea, and he accepted all the attention with grace and humility.

Here are a couple pictures taken by the coolest Slovakian I have ever met, Wicked:
[image loading]

Xellos with Wicked outside the venue. Xellos actually smiled, which is a little rare considering how shy he is. Maybe it is because Wicked spent his time getting wasted with ForU on european absinthe.

[image loading]

Xellos with Manifesto7 and Mani's shit eating grin. Notice how in this picture he is not smiling nearly as much.

[image loading]

This is my StarCraft disc, which Xellos signed and dated.

Thats it from this year's WCG. Lots of impressions and reactions of the event itself are brimming on these fingers, but my ride is leaving.

Cheers,
Mani

I spoke with Xellos a bit too during WCG (through same translator I think). He seemed quite timid so I just kept it quick and asked him a few questions. He was really surprised I'd heard of him though (the translator kept asking me details about how I knew of him).

That's a killer finish for your WCG reportage, Manifesto

I don't know how you managed to get this interview but it's lucky for us that you did! "I don' t have to practice for this tournament" Haha, it may sound incredibly arrogant, but going 13:0 to win the WCG without breaking a sweat is a disarmingly appropriate support for that statement... damn

Manifesto, good stuff; I know you had fun, thanks for sharing it with us

great stuff, manifesto. Cheers!

Reading all WCG news, I have to say I didn't think before that the gap between pros and non-pros was _that_ big....uuhh.

I hope, Mondragon and Androide read that interview. It is not that bad a thing to be mentioned by Xellos for being good players.

first of all, the picture in the link above is not the "translator lady". second, she is not an official translator, she just happened to be there to translate when xellos got swarmed. and finally, she is in fact gorgeous, and she also happens to be my gf, so it would be a nice gesture by some of you to refrain from the adolescent comments and from asking for her picture ^^;;

in any case, i actually was one of the guides/translator helping out the korean sc team during wcg 2004. in fact i came to this teamliquid website because xellos gave me manifesto's business card (since xellos obviously cannot read english). in any case, i thought i might share some of what i saw throughout the last few days to the non-korean community, as i think it might be interesting for some of you. i also hope i can give some better insight about these korean gamers that a non-korean might have due to the language/cultural barrier and also because i spent quite a bit of time with them the last few days. i also realize some of you might not believe any of what i write here, but frankly, if you don't, i don't care ^^;;

first, the three progamers from korea are all consummate professionals. there's a real palpable difference between those who play sc for a living and someone who plays recreationally or even as semi-pros, no matter how good you get against non-pro competition over bnet. it's hard to describe exactly what that difference is, but for lack of a better term, i would say... unflappable confidence. they just expect to win. but on the other hand, these guys never bragged to me even once-- they are polite, soft-spoken, well-mannered, and never made any excuses about any of their poor play. for instance, when foru lost the first of three against testie in the round of 16, he simply went straight to the replay to get ready to win the next two. midas also left a big impression on me, as i have never seen a more competitive player at so young an age. even though he only picked up sc 2 years ago or so (previously he had been a progamer for another RPG called "kingdom under fire"), this guy is just so hungry to win, it's just amazing to witness firsthand. and his mechanic control is breathtaking. ^^;; so despite some of the ignorant comments i heard at wcg from people walking around, the xellos vs. midas final was not just a ho-hum match between two teammates. and about xellos, well, what can you say except that his play just seemed flawless this week. he also has incredible intuition-- i kept wondering to myself if he had ex-ray vision. i'm sure his opponents could confirm this from the perfect scans and timing rushes/drops. as a sc fan, it's just amazing to witness this firsthand.

second, xellos, midas, and foru all have incredibly demanding schedules, and sacrificed quite a bit to come to wcg. they were dead tired throughout the entire tournament, not least because of the 13 hour time difference between korea and the u.s. they also were having a hard time adjusting to the food and regularly were missing meals, but they never ONCE complained about any of these things and went about doing the best they could while also constantly having people barrage them for interviews and pictures and autographs, etc. i think this is a good example of what makes someone a successful progamer and not just some "battle.net gosu." they were all there to win, and to represent korea as graciously as they know how to an international audience-- by playing the best starcraft they could despite less than perfect conditions. because even if you can't speak korean, you understand when you see amazing vulture micro to destroy a depot wallin just out of goli range (people who were at wcg know what i'm talking about).

finally, manifesto i was standing next to you during the xellos vs. bizzy games while you were typing away on your notebook. i didn't want to bother you from your work, but it was nice to see true grass-roots media representation get so close to the action and to actually understand it, so i give you props for good coverage of wcg for true sc fans. i walked away from wcg thinking that if the sc community stays strong, the game could literally last forever.

good luck and have fun!
i want bubbles the warrior monkey back

Thanks uhjoo for your inside report.
I think that's what _real_ progaming is all about.
It's not about having fun, meeting nice girls, drinking till 6am and so (this is the impression I sometimes get if I read the reports of some non-korean "progamers". Don't misunderstand me: Nothing wrong about that!!!! And even progamers will have such pleasures from time to time (I hope at least! ). But: You won't get to the top if you spent too much time on that pleasures. Instead, you need the will to become the best, to sacrifice a lot and, consequently, to have a really good work-ethic. This is the difference between seeing starcraft as fun or as _work_ or hard job.
So, for all of you dreaming of becoming a progamer, are you really up to it?

Xellos does play on Battle.net; and he would find competition there plenty. Most of the pros smurf and play various servers to stay incognito. Very understandable with all of the fanboys they have, and with the level of play they have to maintain. They can't waste their time playing a bunch of newbs who are clamoring for games, you know? Don't forget guys that Ggon shares the Xellos[YG] account too so it could possible be Ggon who isn't in as much as Xellos is so he might have more Bnet time. Who knows?

hello again folks,

thanks for the kind words and welcome to teamliquid.net. it's nice to see a sense of community here despite the anonymity of the internet (which often results in antisocial behavior ^^;. i also should say right up front that i myself have no personal importance-- i'm just a fan like the rest of us and got lucky enough to get to know some of these gamers and the related personalities (like the G.O. team coach, who is the coolest guy ever). but in any case, i will try to come to this site as much as time allows to try to give whatever little insight i do have whenever appropriate. at the least, i think i might be able to do simple translations and culture lessons for those interested. o_O oh, and Elvin_vn, my id is pronounced "uh - jjoo," which roughly translated means something like "whoa! you think you're hotsh*t?" ^_^;;

xellos and other progamers DO play on bnet, but obviously not publically and only with other pro or semi-progamers. i think xellos answered "no" to the question meaning that he doesn't play public games on bnet. i also suspect they enjoy their privacy for very practical reasons. they have a very limited amount of time to even practice for even one tournament and some of them are in like 3 tourneys at the same time. if you think from their perspective, imagine how much you'd practice if you knew you had to play iloveoov, yellow, nal_ra, and nada, each time for money, and each time on different maps. you probably wouldn't want to be bothered either. but nevertheless these guys get bothered ALL THE TIME about sc (we can walk away from the computer whenever we get sick of playing but everyone who meets these guys just wants to talk sc) and some of them literally get stalked on bnet. thus, i think it would be good manner on our part to not take offense and to fully understand if they don't reply to pms or refuse to play games. it would be like being offended that tracy mcgrady doesn't want to play in your neighborhood pickup game. >_<

a final scoop: during wcg, i spoke to quite a few reporters from korea and also expressed (accurately i hope) that there is a market for non-koreans watching korean VODs from mbcgame, ongamenet, iTV, etc. they are aware of this interest, and the ongamenet team leader told me they are working on making it easier for foreigners to register to watch VODs online on the ongamenet website-- in fact something might be in place within the next few months, so keep your fingers crossed ^^;;

good luck and have fun!

Most of the foreign community plays starcraft only occasionally, I think and may not even know about vods. We are quite a hardcore group here, I'd say

It's good news though, if OGN decides to make vods more easily available to the public they will find a large amount of viewers. Thanks for the heads up, "whoa! you think you're hotsh*t?"

thx for all the info and welcome on board, i think this year wcg was very good for the promotion of competitive starcraft outside korea. We got plenty of gamers with great potential and i hope some of them will be able to play and train in korea just like GiyoM and ElkY did back in the days.

There was a major language barrier, and he was pretty shy. It was difficult for the koreans because they had so much attention and pressure. I was just glad he had a little time for me, but I didnt expect him to have anything big to say.
