That's a killer finish for your WCG reportage, Manifesto

I don't know how you managed to get this interview but it's lucky for us that you did! "I don' t have to practice for this tournament" Haha, it may sound incredibly arrogant, but going 13:0 to win the WCG without breaking a sweat is a disarmingly appropriate support for that statement... damn

Manifesto, good stuff; I know you had fun, thanks for sharing it with us

Nice! Hey Manifesto I remember seeing you but not properly introduced. I had no idea.

I was the old Puerto Rican guy sitting behind you. Hehe

great stuff, manifesto. Cheers!

Reading all WCG news, I have to say I didn't think before that the gap between pros and non-pros was _that_ big....uuhh.

I hope, Mondragon and Androide read that interview. It is not that bad a thing to be mentioned by Xellos for being good players.

first of all, the picture in the link above is not the "translator lady". second, she is not an official translator, she just happened to be there to translate when xellos got swarmed. and finally, she is in fact gorgeous, and she also happens to be my gf, so it would be a nice gesture by some of you to refrain from the adolescent comments and from asking for her picture ^^;;

in any case, i actually was one of the guides/translator helping out the korean sc team during wcg 2004. in fact i came to this teamliquid website because xellos gave me manifesto's business card (since xellos obviously cannot read english). in any case, i thought i might share some of what i saw throughout the last few days to the non-korean community, as i think it might be interesting for some of you. i also hope i can give some better insight about these korean gamers that a non-korean might have due to the language/cultural barrier and also because i spent quite a bit of time with them the last few days. i also realize some of you might not believe any of what i write here, but frankly, if you don't, i don't care ^^;;

first, the three progamers from korea are all consummate professionals. there's a real palpable difference between those who play sc for a living and someone who plays recreationally or even as semi-pros, no matter how good you get against non-pro competition over bnet. it's hard to describe exactly what that difference is, but for lack of a better term, i would say... unflappable confidence. they just expect to win. but on the other hand, these guys never bragged to me even once-- they are polite, soft-spoken, well-mannered, and never made any excuses about any of their poor play. for instance, when foru lost the first of three against testie in the round of 16, he simply went straight to the replay to get ready to win the next two. midas also left a big impression on me, as i have never seen a more competitive player at so young an age. even though he only picked up sc 2 years ago or so (previously he had been a progamer for another RPG called "kingdom under fire"), this guy is just so hungry to win, it's just amazing to witness firsthand. and his mechanic control is breathtaking. ^^;; so despite some of the ignorant comments i heard at wcg from people walking around, the xellos vs. midas final was not just a ho-hum match between two teammates. and about xellos, well, what can you say except that his play just seemed flawless this week. he also has incredible intuition-- i kept wondering to myself if he had ex-ray vision. i'm sure his opponents could confirm this from the perfect scans and timing rushes/drops. as a sc fan, it's just amazing to witness this firsthand.

second, xellos, midas, and foru all have incredibly demanding schedules, and sacrificed quite a bit to come to wcg. they were dead tired throughout the entire tournament, not least because of the 13 hour time difference between korea and the u.s. they also were having a hard time adjusting to the food and regularly were missing meals, but they never ONCE complained about any of these things and went about doing the best they could while also constantly having people barrage them for interviews and pictures and autographs, etc. i think this is a good example of what makes someone a successful progamer and not just some "battle.net gosu." they were all there to win, and to represent korea as graciously as they know how to an international audience-- by playing the best starcraft they could despite less than perfect conditions. because even if you can't speak korean, you understand when you see amazing vulture micro to destroy a depot wallin just out of goli range (people who were at wcg know what i'm talking about).

finally, manifesto i was standing next to you during the xellos vs. bizzy games while you were typing away on your notebook. i didn't want to bother you from your work, but it was nice to see true grass-roots media representation get so close to the action and to actually understand it, so i give you props for good coverage of wcg for true sc fans. i walked away from wcg thinking that if the sc community stays strong, the game could literally last forever.

good luck and have fun!

Thanks uhjoo for your inside report.
I think that's what _real_ progaming is all about.
It's not about having fun, meeting nice girls, drinking till 6am and so (this is the impression I sometimes get if I read the reports of some non-korean "progamers". Don't misunderstand me: Nothing wrong about that!!!! And even progamers will have such pleasures from time to time (I hope at least! ). But: You won't get to the top if you spent too much time on that pleasures. Instead, you need the will to become the best, to sacrifice a lot and, consequently, to have a really good work-ethic. This is the difference between seeing starcraft as fun or as _work_ or hard job.
So, for all of you dreaming of becoming a progamer, are you really up to it?

Interesting post, uhjoo. I'm guessing you live in Korea? If you do, would you mind dropping by every now and then and givin the inside scoop on stuff happening in the SC scene there ?
There's a hole in the world like a great black pit, and the vermin of the world inhabit it... and its morals aren't worth what a pig could spit, and it goes by the name of Reddit.
