MSL Group Selection Ceremony

Round of 32 Groups and Predictions
By ]343[, l10f, Milkis and flamewheel

Another news post, another five minutes spent trying to fill out this small area so that the formatting doesn't get all messed up. Anyway, I hope you've missed us, but fret no more, MSL is back! We've got quite the post for you as well, with battle reports, predictions, and... a dress.

Leta, why?

Survivor started out with a ton of Zergs qualifying, toward the end Protoss stepped up, leaving hope for the Legend of the Fall to hold true. Still though, by the end of Survivor race distribution was very skewed: eleven Zerg, eight Protoss, and only five Terran. Another Swarm Season? Hopefully not; read on!

If we factor in seeding from the previous tournament we end up with 10 Terran, 13 Zerg, and 9 Protoss. This seems quite balanced, and hopefully this is a sign of a good MSL to come.

Honestly, the level of play in Survivor was lacking, most of the games uneventful. However, we here at the MSL team scoured through the hundredssixty games in order to bring you six that we thought are worth watching, either because of big names playing, solid extended play, or side-hurting failure. Here's l10f and ]343[ with the Spotlight Games of Survivor, and I apologize for the lack of pictures in some of the BRs. I don't really have time at the moment to add them, but I guess this makes it a challenge for the imagination.

Group 2 Set 2: (Z)Neo.G_Soulkey < Aztec > (P)Shuttle

+ Show Spoiler +
By ]343[

(P)Shuttle, the red Protoss at 4, and (Z)Neo.G_Soulkey, the yellow Zerg at 8, are to duel on Aztec. Shuttle opens with a standard Forge FE despite scouting the wrong way initially; Soulkey opens Overpool, then expands. Shuttle warps in a cannon and his second Nexus.

Soulkey takes a fast 3rd at the other natural and sends his initial pair of lings to try to deny scouting. The Probe gets through by a roundabout way, and Shuttle almost snipes a Drone after seeing Soulkey's morphing Lair. Shuttle puts up his Core and Stargate while Soulkey plops down a Spire.

Both players are content to macro up and follow their builds; Soulkey adds a Hydra Den, Evolution Chamber, and two Hatcheries while Shuttle adds a Citadel. A Sair and Overlord scout the opponents' bases. Soulkey produces quite a few scourge in hopes of reducing the Corsair count.

Shuttle adds Gateways and pokes around with Zealots, but is denied by Sunkens at each base. Zealot speed finishes; Shuttle adds a Robo in addition to his Templar Archives. Soulkey amasses mutalisks and discovers Shuttle's fresh 3rd with some Scourge, but a backstab attempt is soundly defeated by Zealots and an Archon. Shuttle responds by using 6 Zealots to kill a handful of Drones.

Into the valley of death rode the ... six.

Soulkey's Muta/Ling/Scourge force roams the map; the Mutalisks take a potshot and leave after scouting the situation. Soulkey begins his Hive.

Soulkey's Mutalisks harass the 3rd of Shuttle, and with excellent micro hit the defending Archons many times while taking few hits. Only the arrival of Corsairs entices the Mutalisks to retreat.

Can't touch this!

In what has become a trend for Soulkey, he expands to the third main while pumping Zerglings and turtling with Sunkens. Shuttle mainly has Zealots, Templar, Archons, and Corsairs, the latter of which are met happily by a large flock of Scourge; the Scourge deal significant damage.

It's a trap!

A Zergling backstab forces a cancel of Shuttle's 4th base, but Shuttle's Zealot/Archon/Corsair ball loiters menacingly outside Soulkey's 3rd. Soulkey responds by massing Sunken colonies... seven of them. He still has no Hydralisks.

Sunken defense.

However, now that Shuttle's army is totally out of position, Soulkey's Muta/Ling backstab is able to totally destroy Shuttle's 3rd, Nexus and all. Soulkey's Defiler mound goes up.

'Tis a good day to die.

Shuttle quickly takes a different 3rd in response, but a large number of Cracklings makes him reconsider. Soulkey prepares for the final push by Shuttle by spamming Sunkens in his natural.

Did I say sunken defense before? Sorry; this is the real thing.

Soulkey begins by Scourging most of the Corsairs, and micros his Mutalisks furiously to defend. Despite doing good damage and denting Soulkey's Sunken count, Shuttle is persuaded to retreat by the arrival of Lurkers in Soulkey's natural.

The sunkens did their job.

After a brief respite, Shuttle's 3rd is again assaulted by a wave of Zerglings. This time, however, he is successful in his defense. Soulkey has a shiny new Ultralisk Cavern, but no matter--two more waves of Zerglings hit, one at Shuttle's 3rd and one at his 4th. The 3rd is defended, but the newly warping 4th has no chance to survive with Shuttle's army at his other base.

Soulkey follows this up with a Mutalisk raid on Shuttle's 3rd; Shuttle is again caught unprepared, though a few good storms and an Archon shot reduce Soulkey's Mutalisk count. Yet another Zergling backstab forces a cancel of the 4th again.

Shuttle tries to stabilize, but Soulkey is not done yet: kicking into full Hive-tech mentality with Crackling/Ultra/Defiler, he engages the Protoss army near Shuttle's 3rd. Shuttle defends heroically, yet cannot prevent the loss of his 3rd Nexus.

Shuttle defended well, but Soulkey was everywhere.

Shuttle obtains Reaver tech in hopes that he can increase his firepower, but Ultra/Ling destroy his 3rd expansion yet again before he can defend. Shuttle goes in with one last-ditch attack, but is promptly plagued twice--once on his Zealots, and once on his Reaver.

Playguuuuuuuuuuuuu!

Swarm goes up in Soulkey's natural, Ultralisks ravage Shuttle's 4th (now 3rd), and Shuttle throws in the towel.

By now, it seems like the Ultra/Ling are living with the probes.

Summary: Shuttle was by no means bad, but Soulkey sure made him look bad by being everywhere at once with Cracklings. Soulkey's ZvP style is interesting (and ZerO seems to be adopting it too sometimes)--mass Sunken/Zergling/Mutalisk into fast Hive tech, largely skipping Hydras and depending on Sunkens to defend. (P)Bisu was one of the few Protosses who has actually figured out how to pick this strategy apart.

Group 7 Winners' Set: (Z)ZerO < Circuit Breaker > (T)Midas

+ Show Spoiler +
By ]343[

(T)Midas and (Z)ZerO meet in the winner's match of MST Group 7. Midas spawns as the heroic white Terran at 4.5 on Circuit Breaker, while Zero, the brave purple Zerg, spawns at the cross position at 10.5.

Midas opens with an aggressive 8 Barracks in his natural. Zero, suspecting nothing, opens with the standard 12 Hatch 11 Pool. He sends a drone scout to be safe, but it doesn't see the barracks before the first marine pops. The marine and two SCVs head towards the Zerg natural before the Pool is even finished.

Midas begins a bunker at the bridges, out of range of the Hatchery, while Zero pulls 5 drones. Midas starts a second bunker as the second marine arrives; Zero throws up a sunken colony and produces Zerglings to stave off the threat. But with good micro, Midas takes out the first sunk as it pops.

Kaboom!

Midas, meanwhile, has bunker-hopped his way into the natural, and the hatchery is now just out of range of his 3rd bunker. Four marines load into the near bunker and fire on another newly morphing sunken colony. Midas continues rallying marines to Zero's natural. Zero finally successfully puts up a bunker-safe sunken colony and is destroys the close bunker, which by now Midas has already vacated. Zero engages Midas's marines on the bridges, managing to take out the four brave marines who dared to venture outside; Midas kills all the lings but two, who move out to scout.

Blooooooood.

Amid the battling, Midas has expanded, added another Barracks, and bunkered his natural, while Zero has taken his gas and teched to Lair. Midas proceeds to add an Engineering Bay and Academy while Zero takes out the 2nd bunker. A courageous zergling runs by the Terran defenses to scout Midas's main while Zero leaves a drone at 7.5.

Zero loses some lings, but eventually succeeds in bringing the final bunker in his natural into the red; meanwhile, he takes his 3rd base while circling around with his zerglings. Midas, however, is ready with a full control group of marines, two medics, and stim, and Zero backs off. Midas increases his Barracks count to 4 and moves out while Mutas begin morphing, while Zero kills the bunker at the cost of another handful of lings.

Hero marine has 7 kills thanks to his trusty bunkers!

Mutalisks pop, and Zero proceeds to carelessly move them over the marines, taking some damage. Zero has only mutalisks and two sunkens in his natural; he then sacrifices two mutalisks with more uncharacteristically poor micro.

Zero is cute even when he's sad.

Midas's reinforces with his second group of m&m while Zero stalls with mutalisks and adds sunkens. Midas scouts the 3rd and sends a control group of marines there, which meet morphing lurker eggs. The lurkers, with mutalisk support, hold off the first group of marines, but a second group arrives and takes out lurkers and sunken. Zero, forced to defend his 3rd with mutaslisks, is left with only a few lurkers and sunkens in his natural. The first vessel goes to the third and Midas micros to take out more defending lurkers.

Ouch.

But when Midas pushes into the nat with 20 marines and 3 tanks, Zero promptly gg's, having nothing left with which to defend.

Units > no units.

Summary: Excellent execution of the bunker rush by Midas, with a great pressuring follow-up. Zero made some uncharacteristic micro mistakes that cost him the game.

Group 11 Set 1: (Z)Killer < Aztec > (P)Violet

+ Show Spoiler +
By l10f

Killer starts at 7 o'clock as the Purple Zerg and Violet starts as the Tan Protoss at 12 o'clock. Both players don't have many games on this map, but both players are on high spirits after each winning their most recent Proleague match. Killer starts off with a 12 hatchery build, and Violet responds by getting his gateway before cannons. Both players choose to play economically; Killer gets only one pair of zerglings and takes the 5 o'clock natural expansion.

Violet techs to stargate and makes an assimilator in his natural, while sending his zealot to scout. The zealot gets four zergling kills before it dies, and Killer responds by sending zerglings into Violet's main. The zerglings fail to kill any probes, but the zealot at Killer's 3rd also fails to kill any drones.

After minor skirmishes, Violet scouts Killer with his corsair and moves out with his two zealots and a dragoon to pressure. Killer uses this chance to surround and kill Violet's army while killing the corsair with his scourges. Violet's +1 speed zealots move out towards Killer's 3rd to make up for the loss, but two sunkens along with good sim city prevents the zealots from doing any damage.

Seeing the zealots back down, Killer changes his sim city so his units can get out, and Violet uses this chance to get his zealots into the 5 o'clock main expansion and kills Killer's hatchery. Meanwhile, Violet has massed up a large corsair fleet, and attempts a dark templar drop in Killer's main. Scourges kill a few corsairs, but the dark templars manage to kill a few drones.

The dark templar harassment allows Violet to take his 3rd expansion safely. Killer's hive tech finishes, and although Killer has focused on making drones and defending with sunken colonies, his economy isn't as great as it should have been due to Violet's harassments. Violet moves out with a large zealot/archon/reaver army, but a good stop lurker from Killer drives the army back while doing significant damage to the units.

Violet uses the reavers to harass the 5 o'clock main expansion and kills a few drones. However, the shuttle gets scourged by a good move from Killer along with the two reavers. Both players expand, and Violet continues to harass Killer's 5 o'clock expansion. Killer begins to creep forward using his lurkers, but Violet's dark templars kill Killer's 9 o'clock expansion while Violet takes an extra expansion for himself.

Killer expands to multiple expansions at once, trying to recover from the damage, and Violet takes this chance to attack. Killer decides that he can't win head to head, and stalls using dark swarms and observer sniping. Without observers, Violet's army slowly gets pushed back by Killer's lurker and hydralisk force. Killer attacks the retreating army and breaks the balance of gas units in Violet's army. Although Violet's thriving economy allows him to rebuild an army, it is zealot heavy, and Killer is once again able to kill the army using his fully upgraded hydralisks, zerglings, and lurkers.

Killer is now able to take almost every expansion on the map, and even though Violet's harassments continue to kill a large number of drones, the sheer number of Zerg's low tech units is too much for Violet and by the time he gets through the zerglings and hydralisks, ultralisks and a large number of lurkers kill Violet's final army.

Group 11 Winners' Set: (Z)Killer < Circuit Breaker > (P)Snow

+ Show Spoiler +
By l10f

Killer starts at 5 o'clock as the White Zerg and Snow starts as the Red Protoss at 7 o'clock. The game starts off the same was as Killer vs Violet. Killer gets his hatchery first, then expands to the 1 o'clock natural expansion, and Snow gets his gateway before any cannons. Snow techs to stargate and creates a wall to block zerglings. Killer produces a handful of zerglings, but after seeing the wall, decides to pump drones instead.

Killer techs to spire, and makes two more hatcheries at his expansions. Snow scouts with his corsair and quickly techs to templars. Killer expands to 1 o'clock main expansion and pumps even more drones. Snow attacks with corsairs and tries to kill the overlords while sneaking in dark templars, but overlords come just in time to stop the dark templar from doing any damage.

After successfully defending against the dark templars, Killer makes another hatchery at 1 o'clock and starts making hydralisks. Snow moves out with a zealot archon army towards 1 o'clock but heads back after seeing a lot of hydralisks. Killer moves out with his army and forces Snow to move his army back, but snow drops a dark templar in Killer's main. Killer has nothing in his main but sees the shuttle and moves his drones out. This let Snow mix high templars into his army and once again Snow takes control of the center.

Snow attacks Killer's natural and gets a few good storms off on the hydralisks. Another storm kills most of Killer's drones at his natural. Snow decides that he has done enough damage and moves back out of Killer's natural to regroup. Snow expands while reinforcing his army, and prepares for another attack. Snow pressures Killer's natural again with his army, gets a good storm off, and moves back to protect his expansion.

Snow attacks towards 1 o'clock this time, but lurkers drive the observerless army back. Dragoons begin to be produced, but they are blocked by buildings and can't join the army. Killer uses this timing to kill off few zealots using his lurkers, and Snow finally realizes that his dragoons are stuck. Snow drops 4 dark templars in Killer's 1 o'clock expansion and kills a lot of drones. Killer goes for a desperation attack on Snow's expansion, but well-placed storms drive back the army.

Snow drops four zealots in Killer's main but it fails to do any damage. Snow breaks the mini contain in front of his 3rd expansion, and takes another expansion at 9 o'clock. Snow moves towards 1 o'clock with his army, and Killer attacks Snow's 3rd using lurkers and dark swarm. The attack fails to kill the nexus, but it buys Killer time to take one more expansion.

Both players move around in the center without committing to any attack until Snow attacks the 12 o'clock expansion. Snow loses a lot of zealots to lurkers and zerglings because he was lacking any high templars. Snow tries attacking the natural again, but once again is driven back by dark swarm and plague. Snow finally begins to produce reavers, and once again attacks the 12 o'clock expansion, but by now Killer has enough army to fight head on with Snow's army.

Snow uses a part of his army to kill Killer's 12 o'clock expansion but Killer kills most of Snow's main army using his army to attack rather than defend. Snow's harassments continue to deal a lot of damage to Killer, and Snow takes the 11 o'clock natural expansion. Killer prepares a lurker line near 9 o'clock and kills the 11 o'clock expansion before it finishes.

Killer defends the next harassment from Snow and attacks Snow's main army. Well upgraded low tech units overwhelm Snow's army at 9 o'clock, and Snow cannot take any more expansions. Snow's mineral only expansion runs out, and Killer is able to overwhelm Snow with the sheer amount of his units. Killer once again comes back from a disadvantageous position using cheap, well upgraded units.

Group 12 Set 1: (Z)Hyuk < Aztec > (P)sHy

+ Show Spoiler +
By l10f

Hyuk spawns at 9 o'clock as the Orange Zerg, and sHy spawns at 12 o'clock as the Blue Protoss on Aztec. This is sHy's first broadcasted game, and combined with Hyuk's good ZvP record, Hyuk is the clear favorite in this matchup. sHy surprisingly opens standard, with a pylon in his natural, but he scouts the wrong way. Hyuk also starts with a standard overpool expansion build. However, after chasing away the probe, he gets a gas before starting the third hatchery to get both lair and zergling speed quickly.

Hyuk takes the 7 o'clock natural expansion, and starts his spire. sHy sees this, and builds a citadel of adun and a second gateway before his stargate. As soon as the probe leaves the base, Hyuk makes almost two control groups of zerglings and attacks sHy. He attacks the forge, and sneaks three zerglings into sHy's main when zealots move out of formation to defend. Additional zerglings finish off the forge before the +1 melee attack finishes.

Hyuk makes mutalisks to finish off sHy after the initial damage, but sHy sees the mutalisks come out with a scouting zealot. He sends his army to harass Hyuk's 7 o'clock expansion and immediately puts down cannons, a second stargate, and two shield batteries, one in each base. Hyuk all-in attacks sHy with a lot of mutalisks and zerglings, and manages to kill all the cannons with the zerglings. However, the shield battery restores shield on the last corsair, and it manages to fend off multiple mutalisks.

Hyuk once again attacks with zergling reinforcements, but sHy pulls probe at a nice timing and it is defended again by zealots and corsairs along with the shield battery. Hyuk decides to take a break and switch his tech to hydralisks. He knows he is very far behind and the only way to win is attempting another all-in. sHy scouts the whole map again with his corsair, and sees the hydralisk den. sHy makes 6 cannons in his natural while keep making corsairs.

Hyuk kills the forge with Hydralisks and goes in for the attack. High templars come out for sHy but they do not have storm yet. sHy is forced to pull probes but he barely defends against the hydralisks. sHy uses his corsairs to kill Hyuk's overlord, and Hyuk goes in for yet another attack with more hydralisks, but sHy finally got psionic storm and Hyuk is forced to pull back. Series of attacks follow and sHy continuously manages to defend and warps in more cannons each time.

In a following attack, Hyuk manages to dodge storms well and kills off all of sHy's zealots. He moves in with reinforcements but a well-placed storm allows sHy to defend yet again. sHy moves out with his zealot templar army, trying to finish the game, but Hyuk kills off the army with great micromanagement. When sHy moves his corsairs to kill Hyuk's overlords in his main, Hyuk drops in sHy's main base. However, Hyuk can't reinforce his army, and the units die without doing much damage.

sHy builds up a large zealot templar army and moves out, but loses a lot of corsairs carelessly to hydralisks. Hyuk drops a lot of hydralisks in sHy's main when sHy moves out, but the newly produced units and a templar defend the drop. sHy's army comes back to clear out the remaining forces. Hyuk loses 7 o'clock expansion and drops sHy's main one more time with lurkers, but sHy's observer comes out just in time and forces a GG from Hyuk.

Group 12 Final Set: (T)Classic < Triathlon > (P)Movie

+ Show Spoiler +
By ]343[

(T)Classic, the orange Terran at 4, faces off with the blue Protoss (P)Movie at 12 on Triathlon. The players open standard; Classic walls off his main ramp and scouts first. Classic takes his back natural while Movie takes his front natural. Movie warps in a Cybernetics Core and Assimilator soon afterwards.

Classic uses his first marines to knock down the eggs between him and his second base. Movie chases the scouting SCV without success and sends one Zealot to slash at the wall before retreating.

Movie opts for a quick Citadel; a Templar Archives and second Gateway follow, while Classic erects a Factory and Starport. Though Movie kept a Dragoon and Zealot behind to deny scouting, the SCV blithely walks past and discovers the Templar tech and two more gateways warping in.

I'm in ur base, scouting ur d00dz.

Classic quickly builds an Engineering Bay as both his Machine Shops spin. Things quickly get interesting from here.

Movie opts for a quick Stargate... and what's that? A Dark Archon!?

ANGRY ARCHON!

Classic loads up four Vultures for a quick drop. Movie is somehow prepared, bringing his Dragoons back in anticipation, but he is still unable to prevent some nontrivial probe losses.

Pew, pew.

An Arbiter Tribunal begins for Movie, but Classic's drops aren't done--he loads up a few more vultures and drops again. Movie is more prepared this time, but Classic glimpses the strange "angry red Archon." Classic has also produced a Wraith, using it to snipe various neutral Arbiters around the map. When he begins firing at the Arbiter cloaking the eggs between Movie's main and back natural, the commentators get excited... and the reason is soon made clear.

You're mine!

Movie mind-controls the Arbiter, a la Free vs Hiya; indeed, the lower cost and faster build time for a Dark Archon makes Mind Control a potentially viable method for obtaining extra Arbiters on Triathlon. Classic makes a valiant effort to snipe the Arbiter with two wraiths, but Movie barely manages to save the Arbiter with dragoons. A 3rd, cloaked, wraith manages to finally take out the Arbiter. Classic takes his front natural in the meantime.

Classic loads up for yet another drop as Movie double expands to his back natural and close min only. Movie's Observatory finally starts at 10:45, when Classic has 6 Factories with 2 addons, a Starport, and a Science Facility.

Both sides seem content to play defensively and macro up; Classic's front natural is defended by many tanks, and he mines and turrets up his back natural and main in preparation for a recall. Movie leaves a few units behind in each base to guard against drops.

Classic begins a 4th CC while patrolling the map with small strike forces of vultures, wraiths, and marines. Movie decides to push out a bit and pressure Classic; his Dark Archon is left exposed but manages to sneakily escape unharmed.

Classic executes a fairly successful vulture raid on the now-exposed 4th of Movie, taking out the cannon and a few probes. A large Zealot/Dragoon force soon forces the Vultures out though. Movie responds with a recall on Classic's back natural, managing to dodge the majority of the mines; he barely snipes the Command Center as it floats away.

They're climbing in your windows, and blowing your people up...

Movie and Classic each expand again, Movie to 10.5 and Classic to 7.5. Classic macros off 8 Factories with 2 addons, while Movie seems to not have quite so many Gateways.

Classic has a strong simcity of supply depots and mines, but is caught unsieged when Movie begins his attack. A Stasis goes off on a Vessel and Tanks, but Classic has far too many Tanks and Movie is forced to retreat.

Unfortunately for Movie, that's only half of Classic's Tanks.

The game is quiet for a while as Movie gets his 5th up-and-running; Classic's 5th, meanwhile, is totally neglected. An Arbiter visits the relatively empty, undefended 5th expansion of Classic and pew-pews the SCV there, while Classic EMPs another stray Arbiter.

The observer pans to three Stargates pumping Carriers for Movie. Classic pushes with a huge 1/0 mech army against the 1/0 Protoss army of Movie; he quickly takes out Movie's mineral only and pushes into the natural. Movie moves in with some Dragoons, hoping to counter, but gets sandwiched between tanks and more tanks from Classic!

Who's getting flanked now?

The carriers, meanwhile, have arrived to defend the natural. Classic pulls back to regroup. A shuttle drops Zealots on Classic's 5th, doing significant damage; they proceed to prevent Classic's 6th CC from landing. Movie is only on 4 mining bases to Classic's 4, however, and moves out with his carriers in hope of dealing some damage. He succeeds in destroying a large mass of turrets at Classic's back natural; Classic, instead of defending, focuses on pushing his whole army into Movie's 10.5 and 9 bases, destroying them.

Notice the CC going up... and the two bases in top left going down.

Classic defends with a fresh batch of 2/0 Goliaths, and the two armies soon collide in the middle. The 1/0 Carriers and 2/0 Dragoons are temporarily pushed back, but the Carriers' mobility allow them to disrupt Classic's cheeky 9 min only.

Why would you expand there again?

Classic holds, however, and begins pushing into the natural agian. Movie is running dry on units--he can't even afford interceptors.

It looks epic, but is actually pretty one-sided.

Classic breaks through the eggs to take down Movie's second-to-last mining base at 3, and Movie is forced to tap out.

Wait, are those cloaked Wraiths? Yes they are!

Summary: Though Movie's strategy was well-planned, his poor defense of harassment meant his economy couldn't keep up with Classic's, and he got rolled.

After the Survivor Tournament ends, the MSL Group Selection Ceremony takes place. Although its main purpose is to place players into groups for the Round of 32, over the years the Group Selection has evolved to include many other things: impromptu dance entries, singing, cross-dressing, and of course, trash-talking. Here's TL's current translator bonjwa Milkis, bringing you a translated Group Selection Ceremony for the PDPop MSL, since otherwise we non-Koreans would be so confused.

MSL Group Selection Ceremony
By Milkis

There have been many accusations made against Brood War over the years, and one accusation that hasn't died is that the scene is, well, boring. The players don't seem to have a personality, while the games have gotten so competitive to the point where everyone just plays standard. There's supposedly no magic to the game anymore -- even Boxer commented on the matter, saying that the game had gotten too competitive, and that the players don't care about showing an entertaining match to the fans anymore but only care about winning.

But it's not that the players stopped caring about entertaining the fans -- it's just that the times had changed. Indeed, if the games weren't entertaining, then there would be no more fans. If the progamers were boring, then there would also be no more fans. But the fact of the matter is that the fans still do exist, both here and in Korea, so there has to have been something.

While it is true that some progamers are indeed boring [Hi, Light!], let's put it into perspective -- progamers are just normal people after all, and are affected by shyness and formality especially when they're new. Thankfully, we do have enough entertainers in the mix to make up for all the players like Action. And when else do they shine better than when they're all together like in the Group Ceremonies?

MBC Game and PDPOP seemed to have realized this, and as a result, put in a lot of prizes for the Progamers. When the prizes for the MSL Group Ceremonies were announced, the jaws of many progamers dropped. A top of the line notebook for best ceremony? A Galaxy Tab for the Best Conversation Maker? Oh my! Well then, let's look at the entrance ceremonies.

As a note, please realize that all the quotes are not necessarily literal translations. They're paraphrased and sometimes translated to the English idiom equivalent.

Most Shocking: Leta
[image loading]

The key point is Leta's unshaved legs. Leta danced to Orange Caramel's Magical Girl, absolutely shocking everyone. He had prepared this ceremony for a month. He commented that while it was awkward at first, but eventually, he got used to it. In the end, we all wonder how Kal had felt about this -- considering Kal had commented before saying that Leta looked like his ex-girlfriend.

Most Adorable: Midas - Baby
[image loading]

The audience was stunned by the Bear and the Tiger that suddenly entered. Were they dancing? And what is this, the Bear is jumping hulahoops! The Bear falls, the Tiger points and laughs. It was quite awesome of Midas to bring in Baby into the ceremony -- although Baby did it cause he owed Midas a favor. But it was adorable.

Best Improvised: Sea - Hyun
A few hours before, Sea and Hyun decided to put together a ceremony -- where they improvised a scene from a famous Korean movie called AhJeoSsi. Sea even cut his hair.

Most Suited to Nickname: Light
Light did an invisible Terran routine, where he had entered "invisibly", and got one of the models to act as he were there, even doing Rock Paper Scissors. After a scan at the second door, Light was revealed.

Reminding us of the 70s: Perfectman - Hiya
Perfectman with a flashy gold jacket showed you how KPop looked like before girlbands. Hiya came around with a toy guitar, playing the supporting cast. Perfectman and Hiya apparently made a 80-20 deal on the prize.

Only if it was Really Money: Hydra
Parodying a Korean Drama, Hydra had some money printed with his name and threw them into the crowd. If he was a bigger baller, he'd have done it more stylishly.

You Were Better off Doing Nothing: Stats
[image loading]

No Stats, that is not a ceremony.

Leta won first prize, not surprisingly considering how shocking it was. Midas got second, although he played it down, claiming that the fans voted for him only because he's been around the scene forever. Sea got the third prize.

Sea talked about how he created his ceremony -- an hour before. He then commented on how low he has went to try and get that prize.

(T)Sea: "Hi Mom. These are the things I do [for money]."

Hiya then popped in, and talked about how Perfectman and he decided on the ceremony. He apologized, and then mimicked Sea's comment. Hiya talks about how Sea has used all of his ammo in the last group selections, and because Perfectman is an amusing kid, he thinks Perfectman can win the prize as the best conversation maker.

Of course, the rebellious comments are always amusing to watch. They show the pride, the class, and the confidence each of the players have. Some of the comments came as players selected their opponents. Here's some of the more few interesting remarks.

One of the more amusing came around when Soulkey chose Fantasy. He wanted to beat Fantasy, just to show that he was better than Zero, who lost to Fantasy in a recent Proleague game, to show that he is better than Zero.

In the meanwhile, Bisu somehow ended up being the center of a lot of comments, as many players expressed desire to play him. One of the more stuck up comments was:

(Z)MIsO: "You know, Bisu has been winning games recently, but I think he sucks. I want to play him."

When asked if he would play anyone else, Miso refused -- he only wanted to play Bisu. But too bad for him, since Shine took him first.

(Z)Shine: "I thought about what would be the most meaningful way of selecting my opponent and realized that putting myself next to Bisu was the best way to do so."

Bisu smiled and nodded as if he knew it was coming. He accepted the challenge.

(P)Bisu: "I made him his nickname, and I'll be the one who makes everyone forget about his nickname."

Bisu tells everyone to not move Shine, and their matchup is set in stone from that moment. Meanwhile there were some fun interactions happened between Light and Free, as Free chose to play Light.

(P)free: "Oh, I didn't even know Light was there. I thought if I went there I would get a free win"

He was playing on Light's "Invisible Terran" theme, claiming that he didn't see Light's name there. But then upon further inquiries, he clarified.

(P)free: "But really, after I lost that game where Light came back from behind, things haven't been going well for me. I wish to beat Light so I can go back to those good old times."

Light however, responded:

(T)Light: "Oh, I was going to use my powers so that any Protoss that tries to play me gets sent straight to the strongest Zerg player."

Free immediately shows regret regarding his decision. After all, what Protoss wants to play Jaedong? Kal saves him later and brings Free to his group, creating what began to look like the group of death.

Of course, you can't have a fun discussion without Sea. Perfectman got voted as the "Most Overrated Player" that, is, most filled with Bubbles. When asked to comment, Sea responds

(T)Sea: "Is he even good enough for anyone to think that he's a bubble?"

Perfectman responds:
(P)PerfectMan: "Telling me these things... why don't we have a match, and the loser shaves off their hair?"

Sea cracks up, and then asks Perfectman if he was serious. After being driven, Perfectman just responds he was just kidding.

(P)PerfectMan: "Am I serious? Just kidding! Why would you bet your hair just on one game? I'm surprised you took it so seriously, I only said that so I could get to know you better."

Sea understands, but reveals that he intended on picking Perfectman, mostly because he stuck his tongue out during his game against MBCGame HERO. Sea talks about Perfectman:

(T)Sea: "He's been around for a while, and I watched him with sympathy when he was on his losing streak. I actually thought his name was Kim Hwa To [Kim Hwaseung Protoss]. I defended him but when he did the tongue ceremony, I wanted to target him."

After sorting out their misunderstanding, Sea brings Free out of the group of death with his choice instead of killing Perfectman.

The MSL also tried to do a special with Lee-Ssang, where they tried to get players to talk about Lee-Ssang under a mosaic. Of course, when we're talking about Flash, we can't get by this comment.

It is not possible for a player that can beat me this MSL to exist. It's a matter of fact that no such player exists... I think this MSL finals will feature the strongest two players once again. Well, everyone can try their best at least. But in the end, I will win.

Flash then comments on how he thinks he and Jaedong will not fall easily. Many players comment on Lee-Ssang under the veil of anonymity (although it's kinda obvious who most of them are), allowing them to be bold ("I was never afraid of Lee-Ssang", "I'll get so stressed out if there's another Lee-Ssang finals"). However, this comment stuck out the most:

???: "Watch out Lee-Ssang, the storm is coming!! ... Wait, is this going to get on exactly as it is? Hahaha... Ahhh... This isn't something that should be broacasted!

The attention immediately shifts to Flash and Jaedong, who talks about the video made by the players. Jaedong likes the attention, since it is admittance that they are at the top. Flash comments on Shine's comment, and Shine plays it down.

Later on, when Flash and Jaedong gets their opportunities to use their selection powers, Stork talks about how he just wants to leave the group of death (Kal - Stork - Shine - Bisu). Flash talks about how he wanted to take all 3 SKT players into his group, but says that it's not professional to do so. s2 makes a comment about how he's in the same group as Flash again, and wonders why Flash likes him so much. Sun steps up to the plate, and says that he would play Flash, and s2 and Sun are swapped. After Stork shows his desperation a bit more, even taking back his previous remark that he respects the decisions of the Seeded players, and he would not beg. But luckily, Flash is a nice guy and accepts Stork's request.

Of course, the group selection ceremony contained much more -- from polls to prizes, to many more random episodes. But it'd be too much to cover them all here, and we end our coverage here. However, we will always do our best to bring the best of group ceremonies.

So with the group selection ceremony finished, the groups are selected, and not long from now the games are going to start. Let's take a look at my fail predictions. Game on!

Round of 32 Groups and Predictions
By flamewheel

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group A: (12/16 17:00 KST)
(T)Flash < Circuit Breaker > (T)Ssak
(T)Classic < Dante's Peak > (Z)MisO
< Triathlon >
< Triathlon >
< Benzene >

As usual, this is the "who besides Flash?" group, and it's definitely one of the weakest I've ever seen. Honestly, since it's so weak it's quite hard to call--my money's on Ssak. Classic hasn't been playing too well while Ssak is gaining confidence (even though Flash says he's going to crush him for BMing Tempest), and MIsO is just a mediocre Zerg. This is probably going to be a boring group, since whoever plays Flash is either going to try to cheese and fail or play standard and get crushed. Then again, perhaps Ssak will have a genius cheese that involves four command centers? That's what we can love about Starcraft, anything can happen!

Though who am I kidding; none of these players can beat Flash.

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group B: (12/16 19:30 KST)
(Z)Jaedong < Dante's Peak > (P)Stats
(P)Snow < Triathlon > (P)free
< Benzene >
< Benzene >
< Circuit Breaker >

My god, Jaedong's in heaven. Granted, none of his opponents are bad--all are actually quite good, but they're going to get demolished by Jaedong. This group promises to provide some good games, with two JvPs and three PvPs. However, it seems that none of the other three are performing up to par (and really, Jaedong's not at 100% yet given his Ace match losses...) but besides Jaedong, free should be escaping this group.

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group C: (12/25 17:00 KST)
(T)Fantasy < Triathlon > (Z)Neo.G_Soulkey
(Z)great < Benzene > (T)Leta
< Circuit Breaker >
< Circuit Breaker >
< Dante's Peak >

Group of Death #1! This is definitely going to be fantastic. Fantasy versus Soulkey? Yes yes yes. On Triathlon? Yes yes yes! On the other hand, great versus Leta has promise as well. If everything goes right, we won't have to even watch TvT! Though the way TvT has been lately, something between Fantasy and Leta would be fast-paced and exciting. Honestly, this is really hard to call. I'd say Fantasy still has the edge over Soulkey, since he'll probably have some very innovative build that relies probably on the deus ex machina valkyrie/vulture/wraith/battlecruiser/science vessel... Either way, Soulkey isn't too well known for his early game tactics, since his preferred time of fighting is at Hive tech. However, Soulkey is also pretty good... so now I don't know what to say. On the other hand, great has been failing this season, but here's hoping this Group of Death brings out the Death God in him. Leta, as we know, will 2port wraith, bless his heart. This group's too hard to call, but I say Fantasy and Leta are going to advance. I said it just a bit above, but I really mean it now: anything can happen in this group. Definitely going to be one to watch.

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group D: (12/23 17:00 KST)
(T)Light < Benzene > (P)Stork
(P)sHy < Circuit Breaker > (Z)RorO
< Dante's Peak >
< Dante's Peak >
< Triathlon >

Ah, Shy not having a picture is kind of sad... but we probably won't be covering him after this round, probably. Also, now I can't make the Invisible Terran joke... Anyway, Light's definitely not happy with this group, since he ran into the best PvT player on the scene right now. I really don't think he's going to get past Stork, and he could potentially be in trouble if RorO wins, since that means Light will have to play two TvPs. However, even with Light's subpar TvP I think he can take Shy, meaning that once Stork makes mincemeat of RorO Light should be happy with a TvZ in the final game. Stork 2-0 and Light 2-1.

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group E: (12/23 19:30 KST)
(Z)Calm < Circuit Breaker > (P)Jaehoon
(Z)Hydra < Dante's Peak > (Z)Killer
< Triathlon >
< Triathlon >
< Benzene >

Ahh this group has so much potential for calamity. Besides Hydra, none of the other three players have been really "stable" players. With Jaehoon's random failings and Killer's random flailings, it's really hard to say who's making it out of this group. Add to that the fact that there's going to be three ZvZs... and it's hard to say. My head tells me to call Hydra and Calm, but for some reason there's a nagging feeling that Jaehoon is going to unleash his practice bonjwa mode and 2-0 this way out of the Zerg-infested group. Yeah, right.

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group F: (12/30 17:00 KST)
(T)fOrGG < Dante's Peak > (P)PerfectMan
(Z)HoGiL < Triathlon > (T)Midas
< Benzene >
< Benzene >
< Circuit Breaker >

This is another one of those groups that I'm like "meh" about. fOrGG is kind of failing, Perfectman is generally fail but sometimes unpredictable, and I still don't know how HoGiL got here, though I'm very impressed. Still, Midas is in this group and that means it automatically becomes 745% cuter. Given the level of competition as well, I think Midas will have an easy 2-0 out of the group. The question, then, is saying who's going to be following him. Just like with the past group, some little portion of my brain is screaming "PERFECTMAN", and unlike last time, I'll follow it. Why not?

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group G: (12/18 17:00 KST)
(T)Sea < Triathlon > (Z)Action
(Z)s2 < Benzene > (Z)ZerO
< Circuit Breaker >
< Circuit Breaker >
< Dante's Peak >

This group also has the potential to be very, very good. So far though, Action has been this season's biggest troll, since he's failing on all fronts. I must say though, he played the most amazing ZvP yesterday, though I'm not going to spoil it. Regardless, the chance of a Sea vs ZerO match is high, though it could be blocked by s2. Either way, Sea and ZerO should advance from this group after some nice TvZs and (hopefully) eventful ZvZs involving Hive tech.

[image loading][image loading][image loading][image loading]
Group H: (12/30 19:30 KST)
(P)Kal < Benzene > (T)Really
(Z)Shine < Circuit Breaker > (P)Bisu
< Dante's Peak >
< Dante's Peak >
< Triathlon >

Group of Death #2! Kal's PvT against Really's TvP? Really's not failing recently? Awesome! But wait who cares about that, we've got Shine versus Bisu again! I predict this group, though it be the last, to have the most comments in the thread, and if Shine wins again I predict we'll be seeing a third wave of bans due to raging. This group is also very hard to call, since so many things can happen. If Really faces off against Bisu his TvP should trump Bisu's PvT, and nobody knows what happens when Shine is in the picture. I want to say that I know Kal will advance, but I'm not sure between Bisu/Shine. I think whoever wins the opening match between them will advance to the Round of 16.

Games are about to start! Tell a friend, call in a sick day from work, open a cold one, and enjoy. Brood War at its finest.

Also, too bad I wasn't able to copy the OSL title this time. You just wait Snorlax!

Bisu needs to break the curse of shine knocking him out of msl/osl... please just for once beat him so we can actually see you against some other good players.

Gotta love that Bisu has accepted Shine as a challenge he needs to overcome, instead of trying to just dodge Shine.

If he loses a third time it will be hilarious and sad. As a fan, I'm hoping he crushes Shine into dust like he was supposed to do in the OSL before he forgot to defend against Mutas and subsequently fell apart.

I mean, how hard is it to practice against Shine's playstyle when Kwanro is your teammate?

aww, I was hoping for a translation of all the progamer polls... I hope that translated versions do eventualy turn up.
He wanted to beat Fantasy, just to show that he was better than Zero, who lost to Fantasy in a recent Proleague game, to show that he is better than Zero.

Looks like someone needs to make a call to the redundancy department of redundancy

Kwanro only uses zerglings. Shine uses Hydras and Mutalisks.

So pretty hard imo!

I'm also glad Bisu decided to accept Shine's challenge instead of dodging. Please win please win please win please win. And who the hell is Miso anyway, calling Bisu out even though his own record is an abysmal 33%.

I thought Stats was very cute with his non-ceremony and his ^__^ smile.

Also, I think Hiya was strumming a toy racket haha.

Thanks for the write-up and the translations! It's always nice to watch the actual personalities of progamers. Surprisingly, Perfectman seems to be a really fun and eloquent guy.

Jaedong Stats and Free in a group is definitely higher level, albeit jaedong is way ahead, but as far as #2/3's go that is definitely the group of death in my opinion.

flamewheel oh boy what did u write :D

Though who am I kidding; none of these players can beat Flash.

hahaha :D but still sad it actually happened ((((((((((((((((((((((

that's so sad to see bisu get faced against his dreaded bork enemy... SHINE!!! lets go bisu, history is not on your side, but pretty-boyness trumps it.

In other news, wtf is with flash. ud think he would want some harder players to knock them out. well, for flash, hes going to advance with such an easy 2-0, hes going to nuke rush.

What fully transpired when (Z)MisO_Lt came up to the mike could've been missed by a lot of people, but i feel it's significant enough for me to translate that part, so here it is:

+ Show Spoiler +
MC: So Miso, since your first impression is very important, let's hear about what your goal is for this MSL.
Miso: To win it all no matter what.
MC: WOAH, to win!? Ok. Now, According to what you wrote in a survey, You didn't just write "Bisu, can you play me?" but wrote "Bisu, let's fight." You're choosing to fight Bisu. Why?
Miso: When I watch Bisu play, he's not that good, but he keeps on winning anyways. (MCs go lololol) I want to play a game against him.
MC: Well, Bisu's just cracking a smile at this point. He's been targeted by so many people. So you want to be matched up with Bisu, right?
Miso: Yes, no matter what.
MC: Well, you'll be in contention with Shine, then. Now, that spot's already filled, so please fill up a spot.
Miso picks Stork.
MC: Well how about Stork? He's also a Protoss.
Miso: No, I ONLY want to play Bisu.
MC: ONLY, ok. Now, you said you only wanted to play Bisu because he feels easy. Does that mean Stork doesn't?
Miso: No.
MCs: So Stork's easy as well? (Amongst themselves) Well that reminds me of someone, who was he, Park Moon something? (he's talking about (Z)maGma from Lost Saga MSL) He's some kind of a legend, right? Looks like he came back today, huh? He kinda looks more like him now, too. The one who had that ONE group selection ceremony and retired?
Miso immediately retracts, saying nononono.
MC: Ok, come in, Miso.

TL;DR: (Z)maGma gets mentioned because of Miso being stuck up. That shuts him up right there.

Hmm, I'm torn between if I want Bisu and Kal to advance or Bisu and Shine. Kal still has the OSL, so I'd be happy with Shine. Of course Bisu must beat him tho.

Bisu may be the first four-MSL-champion. I mean except flash, jeadong, bisu, who deserve a MSL title in this critical time of BW, now that jeadong's winning is a little boring and this guy's look is not better than in the past.

P R E D I C T I O N S:
+ Show Spoiler [Group A & B (SPOILERS!)] +
NOONE EXPECTED SPANISH INQUISITION!
(T)Ssak 2-0, (T)Classic 2-1; (T)Flash 0-2
(Z)Jaedong 2-0, (P)Snow 2-1

Group C (T)Fantasy 2-0; (Z)Great 2-1
+ Show Spoiler +
(T)Fantasy > (Z)Soulkey
(Z)Great < (T)Leta
(T)Fantasy > (T)Leta
(Z)Great > (Z)Soulkey
(Z)Great > (T)Leta

Fantasy improved TvZ, so Soulkey should not be a problem, especially since Neo.G_Bownja stampede looks over at the moment. I pick Great as a second winner because... well, I think he will either turn on full-rage mode after losing first game to Leta or get lucky (ex: 5Pool vs 14CC). Really dunno why.

Group D (P)Stork 2-0; (Z)Roro 2-1
+ Show Spoiler +
(T)Light < (P)Stork
(P)Shy < (Z)Roro
(P)Stork > (Z)Roro
(T)Light > (P)Shy
(Z)Roro > (T)Light

I'm picking another Zerg to defeat a Terran in very last game, just because those are Roro and Light for fifth set. Roro delivers upsets in Proleague and, in my opinion, Light is the perfectman kind of player to lose unexpectedly. Anyway, current form obliges Stork to 2-0 it (I'm begging you Byung Goo!)

Group E (Z)Calm 2-0; (Z)Hydra 2-1
+ Show Spoiler +
(Z)Calm > (P)Jaehoon
(Z)Hydra < (Z)Killer
(Z)Calm > (Z)Killer
(P)Jaehoon < (Z)Hydra
(Z)Hydra > (Z)Killer

I have no words to explain how much this group sucks. Anyway, having Killer or Jaehoon in next round instead of either Calm or Hydra would suck even more. So I pick the smartest Zerg to move forward, as well as new CJ Cerebrate, who, nevertheless, is going to have hard meeting with Baxter.

Group F (T)Midas 2-0; (Z)HoGiL 2-1
+ Show Spoiler +
(T)fOrGG > (P)PerfectMan
(Z)HoGiL < (T)Midas
(T)Midas > (T)fOrGG
(Z)HoGiL > (P)PerfectMan
(T)fOrGG < (Z)HoGiL

Midas must be pleased with this group, while the rest of players are probably equally confident about their chances. I'm putting my money on Hogil, because he recently shows sparks of good form; also, both 'I'm better than Bisu' and 'Timing attack everytime' are flukes to me. Sorry boys.

Group G (Z)Zero 2-0; (T)Sea 2-1
+ Show Spoiler +
(T)Sea > (Z)Action
(Z)s2 < (Z)Zero
(Z)Zero > (T)Sea
(Z)Action < (Z)s2
(T)Sea > (Z)s2

Realistically, there are two good players and two bad players in this group, so picks should be simple. However, s2 is the one who might mess up things a bit, especially due to ZvZ influx. So I'm predicting obvious, but won't be surprised if SKT Zerg eliminates one of the favourites (please, no...)

Group H (P)Kal 2-0; (Z)Shine 2-1
+ Show Spoiler +
(P)Kal > (T)Really
(P)Bisu > (Z)Shine
(P)Kal > (P)Bisu
(T)Really < (Z)Shine
(P)Bisu < (Z)Shine

Giving Bisu's tendency to fall apart in winning positions and shades of his grudge, he will drop out of the tournament. I think we will see Bisu vs Shine twice, and it's going to end up with extremly tight Triathlon showdown. Other than that, Really is the one to lose 0-2, whilst Kal... just plays well.
I am busy.

Just to let everyone know: (P)Stork is on a 9-game losing streak in the MSL, dating back to his loss in the Lost Saga Semis to (P)JangBi. Will this be the MSL he breaks that streak? Or will he continue his MSL mishaps and continue this sorrowful streak?

Jaedong is in heaven and Flash gets a super easy group.
I swear MSL is rigged to get another JvF finals .

"It is not possible for a player that can beat me this MSL to exist. It's a matter of fact that no such player exists... I think this MSL finals will feature the strongest two players once again. Well, everyone can try their best at least. But in the end, I will win."

"To all eSports fans, I want to be remembered as a progamer who can make something out of nothing, and someone who always does his best. I think that is the right way of living, and I'm always doing my best to follow that." - Jaedong. /watch?v=jfghAzJqAp0
