TeamLiquid is proud to present the Altitude TL Invitational, a single day StarCraft 2 event with four of the best SC2 players to celebrate the end of the first beta phase. The event will be casted from replays by Day[9] and Chill on Saturday, May 29 6:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00).
White-Ra is a Ukrainian StarCraft: Brood War top player who is very active and successful in StarCraft 2 tournaments. He won the European TL Invitational and made the finals of the HDH Invitational.
IdrA needs no introduction. He is a pro-gamer and the first official SC2 pro on CJ Entus. A polarizing figure in the community, IdrA is well known for his skill and for his demeanor.
TheLittleOne is a new Liquid team member who is popular for his innovative builds and creative play, particularly for a game involving nukes and battlecruisers in the European TLI, where he made the finals.
Tester is a former progamer and coach for the Korean team eStro. He is recognized by many as one of the best Asia Protoss players at the moment, and is currently an SC2 progamer. Check out an interview with him by Artosis here.
In the Bo3 "semifinals," White-Ra will play Tester, and in the other IdrA will play TheLittleOne. Immediately after, the losers will play in a third place match (Bo5) and the winners will play for first place (Bo5) and $600. All matches will be casted, and VODs will be provided.
About Our Sponsor
Altitude is a multiplayer 2-D aerial combat game that received quite a bit of attention from TL, including its own huge thread and its own TL community organized Altitude league. The Altitude creators are big StarCraft 2 fans, and hope that many of you viewers can give their game a try during the break between Beta phases next month.
A message from our sponsor:
Altitude is a cartoon aerial brawler developed by people who love Starcraft for people who love deep, addictive, multiplayer action games.
Chris "Pillars" Page, former progamer and former lead balancer on SC2: "Altitude offers an excellent mixture of accessibility and depth. I've been playing this game on and off for over two years. Easily one of the best indie games [or games period] I've ever encountered."
When battle net crashes don’t whine and cry, Grab the Altitude Demo and brawl in the sky!
You can download the free demo for Windows, Mac, and Linux at altitudegame.com
We all look forward to the matches and hope you guys will check them out. See you next Saturday!
I ironically downloaded Altitude yesterday, since SC2 is total crap.. and wow, its such a fun game.
It reminds me of like, Gunbound but not turn-based and slow.. but the graphics definitely are gunbound-ish. I wish the game was more popular, as its really cool and I wish there was a bigger competitive scene in it.
Proof that games should be based around GAMEPLAY, not integrating with facebook and catering to copper league terrans who cry MMM is still too weak , so they give even more buffs to the strongest race =/
I'm pretty surprised that this is happening, as a member of the Altitude community I had no idea this was gonna happen. Should be some pretty nice matches, TLO fighting!
Oh wow, this is really surprising. As a member of the Altitude community as well, I'm looking forward to this a lot. :D And day9+Chill is just the best caster team ever.
Wow scary, I just quit steam having tried Altitude demo, at first i tought i was on the wrong website thinking leaving the game lauched the official page.
Just got owned by some bot but now i'll give it a second try just for you guys.
Shouldn't this be to mourn the end of the beta, instead of celebrating it?
I want to see TLO's TvZ versus Idra, though! TLO vs. Sen's Europe vs. Asia Starleague matches were pretty amazing, and I'm eager to see what Idra does against TLO's flexible Terran style.
News Buletin: This tournament will be delayed because IdrA refused to Facebook friend anyone, tournament will resume when Facebook implementation is removed and Bnet 1.0 is re-introduced
If they had seen my latest Silver league replays they would defiantly have chosen me instead of White-Ra. Everyone knows that the best players are in Silver
I hope WhitaRa und TLO will make it to the final and TLO can finally get his revenge over WhiteRa. But even if this doesnt come true I definitely hope Tester is not going to win after the slaughter thats going on in the Europe vs Asia Showmatch-Series.
1st - Tester, Really amazing, esp for playing protoss. 2nd - TLO, since he picks terran now, giving quite the adv. 3rd - WhiteRa, amazing Protoss, best player outside Korea/China but unfortunately TLO race-picks now so gonna be hard. 4th - idra

Yea, this would be my prediction also. I'm really hoping White-Ra practices a ton of PvP and pulls through though! (1 gate tech on Blistering Sands is not good in PvP!)
Mac users are actually able to download altitude for 5$ via steam. I actually just found this out and have been playing for the last couple of days. It's definitely awesome to see them sponsor a TL event. For 5$ you should help them out as well, it's a great game!
awesome news but is it really the end of beta? i thought it will be brought back up few weeks before the launch? Anyway, i couldn't asked for a better beta closure event, TL rocks!
TLO just...doesn't seem to fit with the other three who have you know...WON stuff before. Hoping Tester gets crushed though, Artosis seems to be stroking him in many unknown places about how great his play is, but so far asian play looks like who can abuse cheese and low to no-skill strategies the best.

Really? I think being top 3 in every major event is enough.

Yep I agree.
It's a really great sponsorship because the product (Altitude) is awesome, and appeals to people who play SC2.
You could genuinely plug Altitude without feeling like a sellout, because it's actually a really well made game, + its fun and indie too. The more people who are made aware of this game the better!
I expect tester to absolutely trash whitera, testers apm is soo good that he can win 10 minute games not timing pushing or anything, just by pure micro

just fine. when its abbreviated, 'SC2' starts with an 'eh' sound, so you treat it like you'd treat it as if it starts with a vowel. if you write it out though, 'starcraft' starts with a consonant sound, which is why i think dozle was confused /=
on a more topical note this series is going to be _incredible_. looking forward to another potential whitera v tlo rematch haha
haha, I love altitude. Many of hours of my time have been spent on that game Glad they are helping out another community I really enjoy. Thanks! I would get your game, but I already have it!
Definitely gonna check out Altitude. Looks pretty sweet. Also, ive only seen Ra and TLO play (Idra once in an early version so XFD at his roaches) so im looking forward to seeing them against this Korean guy.
Keep it up TL. Players of this caliber with this amount of money on the line with those casters! I hope E-Sports takes off like i think it should so more like this will be available.
This is just sick. I`m definitely buying altitude to have some fun during the beta break. Hopefully more sponsorship like this is to come since I imagine it`s a fantastic investment. The player choice probably couldn`t be better. Rooting for White-Ra and TLO here, some serious European pride on the line.
Tester is going to win. I saw some VODs of him, he is insane. Definitely worth the hype from Artosis. Also, I am interested in seeing if TLO will still pick random as his Terran build is so strong. Especially if he plays Idra.

Will be some nice games to watch though! :D, thats if they dont get dropped.

No no, I'm going to block you right here, your argument is stupid.
We are still arguing over who is the best in BW, and always will be, that is what comp play is about. In regards to where the proof is, the proof lies in the tournaments they have already played in, likewise you cannot be regarded as one of the best because you have to date, not competed in any tournaments.
In closing, your argument is flawed, and my predictions are; 1.TLO 2.Tester 3.White Ra 4.Idra

All the big tournaments which these 4 ppl play in should be good indicators if they are one of the best or not at this time. And they all performed extraordinarily well...
4 tournaments that have been played by what? around 5% or less of the people that actually have BETA? Goodjob
All im saying is dont jump the gun, the game hasnt been released, there will hopefully be hundreds of thousands buying this game, some who probably never played SC or SC:Broodwar, who could turn out to be amazing in a short period.
I only just got the beta last week, hence why i havnt played in any tournaments myself btw
Hopefully this doesnt look like im just trolling/flaming, just trying to point out the playerpool is so small, and the game hasnt been released .

I'll be quiet now and just enjoy the games!
Nobody is claiming they will be the best later, or they will dominate after the game is released, or that they will be among the best of every player that will ever play SC2. We're just saying they're among the best right now, of the players playing the beta. I really don't think saying this is in any way presumptuous or inaccurate.
White-Ra vs. Tester: White-Ra, the granpa Toss is know that he likes to do a lot fo proxies, but can also play standard strategies. Tester on the other hand is Korean, so he most likely only plays standard - creative builds are only played by a few Koreans
Idra vs. TLO Another Matchup of completely different players: Idra is the prototype of a (Korean) Macro-Beast. He has excellent Macro and Micro, but he clearly lacks creativity. I've never seen him playing some extra-ordinary strategies, he even rarely does cheese, which is sort of standard today. In the other corner we have TLO, the man brings back the "strategy" into RTS - playing very creative, non-standard builds which is not only very entertaining, but also very successfull. Probably over time this advantage will shrink when standards are established (just see how Boxer does against the Micro/Macro-Beats of todays korean BW Scene, I don't think there are more than a handfull of players that are nearly as creative as Boxer is), but right now I really enjoy seeing him play - he plays like I think RTS games should be played: It's about out-strategize and out-smart your opponnent, not simply by beating him with superior mechnanics.
Both games gonna be really intersting and I hope Blizzard fixed Bnet2 till next Sunday.
Cool beans. I'll be tuning in. If we see anything remotely like the Idra-WhiteRa HDH finals, we're in for a treat.
That Altitude game reminds me of "Dogfight", a game I used to love as a kid on the Apple IIe. Monochrome, planes in the sky, tiny little bullets, fast-falling parachutes when you got nailed, screen-wrap on all sides lol. Played it with a buddy for countless hours.

jeez whats your problem?
They are 4 of the very very best SC2 beta players right now, there's no way denying that. No there havent been "4 tournaments" like you say in your other posts, there have been tons and tons of tournaments, and these guys have been at the top of many of them.
It's also not about SC: broodwar at all.. how many people knew TLO aka ips.radio in brood war? All the popularity he's getting atm have only to do with his performance in Starcraft 2. Will these guys be some of the best players a few months after release? While it's pretty likely we do not know that for sure but we do know they are some of the very best right now. So why not let them battle it out in an invitational tournament. This is just positive in any way you look at it.
hm I missed this post ^^

I'm looking forward to seeing TesteR play, curious how his style compares to WhiteRa's and to that of other non-Asian protoss players. Also psyched that TLO will be competing, loved his out of the box play with all races. Especially his Zerg play against Loner in the EU vs Asia inspired me (and I main Terran -_-').
IdrA is obviously a fantastic Zerg and he always puts up a fight, not the most exciting player to watch but he will still macro you to hell while your doing silly things like dancing your marines around. I love his ragequits btw, "GG" is way overrated.
To make this long story even longer; looking forward to this!
Can't wait, great players and amazing commentators, what could go wrong? oh wait, bnet could be down...games could freeze..eh...just nvm. GL to all players, I will be watching.

When I watched his matches he played random in that event. The only reason he played Terran twice was because the game lagged out and he was being nice and doing the same MU.

he's actually always been picking Terran vs Zerg lately. Still random vs other races I think, might be wrong though.
Altitude is a multiplayer action game that a friend and I have spent our life savings developing. It's been an uphill battle generating publicity, but if we show strength on Steam I'm sure we can get some press.
Good to hear they are making enough to sponsor this tournament.

Why not live and when will the games actually be played? If you're afraid that players might cheat by watching the stream, why aren't you delaying the stream like chinese streamers are doing? (in World Cup Tour they have a delay of 1-2 minutes). Also if you think time zones might be a problem for players/viewers ... well, I prefer to wake up earlier and watch a game live, rather than watching replays of it (those who won't wake up or won't stay late, they can watch the replays later ... same thing as watching replays on the "live stream"). Players need to get used to this too and play in the morning or later hours, because removing the "live" option for SC2 tournaments it's a huge step back in e-sports book.
Awesome tournament but not seeing it live makes me not hyped anymore -.-

Not sure if this is the reason, but it seems kinda obvious to me: bnet 2.0. Imagine what a disaster it would be to try to cast it live in its current state..

This is precisely the reason. If there are disconnects or errors with battle.net we need time to handle them. We are aiming for a very specific total event length, and with the beta phase 1 closing so close to our broadcast date, we didn't want to take any chances with a live cast.

Have you come up with a stable way to create reliable live television between 4 computers strung around the world? It isn't as easy as you think it is. When TL gets a television studio and flies players in, then you can complain about live vs replays.

This will be great. Thanks for sponsoring this. I am curious to see IdrA versus TLO. I feel like IdrA is ridiculously strong, but gets thrown off his game in tense situations (see IdrA vs. WhiteRa).

Everything about your post is just wrong. TLO definitely belongs in this pool. You're judging the outcomes of a few tourneys when it's clear just by watching his play that TLO is on a whole different level.
As for saying Asians are no skill, that just sounds bitter to me. Why is it that Euros/NA using diverse strategies is being 'innovative' while Asians doing it is cheese?

I guess it is possible they completely forgot about the Tournament. Hopefully one of the players reminds Teamliquid that it was supposed to happen today. I feel bad for their sponsor. Normally TL is at least on top of promotion for these things to make sure everyone knows when and where to tune in.

Yeah, I ended up using Shazam to figure it out. The latest song that was played just before the tournament started was Take Me Into Your Skin by Trentemøller.
The first game between Tester and White-Ra was amazing play by Tester. It was a classic four gate push except for the fact that he researched hallucinate and used the hallucinated colossi to stop any attempt by White-Ra to FF in his ramp, as well as to provide vision over the cliff. White-Ra went for a tech heavy build as normal but Tester was able to completely decimate it with a timing that preyed on the tech build's low unit count in the beginning.
The second game was great play as well. Tester did make a mistake this time around when the third DT massacred his probes, but that first FF to block the DT he knew was coming was mind-blowing. The final timing push was also just so ... Well, good. He knew exactly the units he needed to overcome White-Ra's defenses.

Tester didn't really do anything out of the ordinary to get Idra upset either. He just played very well.
