This is a mini normal with one special mechanic. Knowledge of whiskey/spirits is not required. There is no post-restriction and deadline time is the standard 22:00 GMT (+00:00).
Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.
The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.
Rules:
Cheating: Cheating includes (but is not limited to): 1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information. 2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town. 3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role. 4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles. 5. Posting screenshots of your inbox. 6. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host. 7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip. 8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts. 9. Betting items outside of the game in exchange for in-game benefits. 10. Sharing accounts with other players unless cleared by the host in advance. Otherwise, only you may post on your account.
Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.
Posting:
Mod Font: This is mod font. It is reserved for moderators. Please do not use it.
Question Font: This is question font. You may use this font to ask the moderators anything BEFORE the game.
Absolutely do NOT ask any questions openly in thread in game as some questions may be alignment indicative.
Activity: You must post in this thread TWICE per day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. Failure to do so will result in a warning; a second offence will result in a modkill.
Smurfs/Hydras: I will allow smurfing. Please send me a PM with who you are playing as. Hydras will not be permitted.
Post Restriction Rules: There is no post-restriction for this game however, rules for spam are unchanged.
Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. Play Mafia here. This also means you should condense your posts when possible. 15 one-liners in 30 minutes is unacceptable.
Encryption: Don't do it.
Editing: Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. If we discover you to have changed any content, you will be modkilled. This includes posts where you have embedded an image, changing the image is tantamount to changing the post. This is the one part of the site where it is okay to be double posting, even triple-posting. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again using the acronym (EBWOP: Edit by way of posting) if you want to clarify/correct something you just posted.
Inappropriate posts: If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate. If you do not like how someone is talking to you, please PM a host, Foolishness or GMarshal before involving the TL staff. If you are unsatisfied with how the situation is resolved, then you can appeal to the TL staff normally.
Reporting posts: The report button is a nice feature for regular TL, but not for this forum. We prefer to deal with things in house if possible to avoid confusion among the TL staff. If you have a problem with how someone is posting, talk to the host, co-host, or GMarshal before using your report button. Please do not use your report button for anything other than inappropriate posts which you feel are not being dealt with adequately.
Ban discussions: Please wait until this game is over to talk about modkills and bans resulting from this game.
Play to win. This means you play your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.
This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason without a ban. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM me or the co-host if you need to leave the game.
You have been warned.
Voting rules:
This game uses plurality lynch. The player with most votes at deadline will be lynched. 1. Voting is done in the voting thread. The voting thread is linked in my important posts spoiler. Please keep votes there, and only vote there. Do not PM me your vote. 2. Please vote in the following format: ##vote Half the Sky. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I or my co-host will update vote counts whenever we get the chance. 3. If you change your vote, please ##unvote before posting another vote (can be done in the same post). 4. No conditional voting. 5. You may not vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game. 6. You may not vote for a no-lynch. 7. Voting is mandatory. You may NOT abstain. Failure to vote will result in a modkill.
Signups and Wisdom of the Crowds:
Signups are open until all 13 spots are filled.
There is no minimum experience required for this game.
The hosts also reserve the right to deny participation to those individuals that are known to disrupt the playing experience for others. If we also receive more than five (behaviour based) objections on a specific player, we will most likely not allow that individual to play. We want everyone to have a positive experience playing on TL regardless of their skill level.
Game-specific rules:
Modkills: This game follows the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, your punishment will go beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to it for questions about your punishment. If you want to use this game to sit out your ban, please PM us and post in the Ban List.
Behaviour: 1 Simply put, do not be a dick. We will pre-warn, warn or modkill you if you approach or cross the line. I am specifically most against personal attacks. These games are meant to be fun for everyone; play the game, but don't ruin the experience. 2 Racist/homophobic/sexist commentary or similar will result in a direct modkill. There is no place for such here, and success as any alignment can be done without. 3 Absolutely, positively, no discussion about other concurrent games in this thread. This can affect other games and is unacceptable. You may discuss players' activities external of TL Mafia, but do not discuss any play in any other ongoing game. Violation of this rule will result in a warning; subsequent offences will result in a modkill.
Replacements: This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made until Night 2. If a player needs to depart after Night 2, he or she will be modkilled. No exceptions. If a player is modkilled before Night 2, they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list if possible. Type /replace if you want to be put on the replacement list.
Clues: There are no clues. The storyline in my game is for entertainment purposes only.
PMs and Out-of-Thread Communication: PMs are not allowed in this game, with the exception of the scumteam and masons. No out-of-thread communication of any sort is allowed for other players. The scumteam and masons, if any, will be provided their respective QTs to communicate in.
Coaches: Because there is a newbie game in progress, there are no coaches allowed for this game.
Shadows: I will permit shadows this game. If you shadow a player, I will provide a separate QT for you and your shadow. If your player happens to RNG into the scumteam, you will not have access to scum QT.
Observers: Please PM the hosts for the Observer QT once the game has started, otherwise, type /obs in the signup thread.
Time Cycle: This game will follow a 24 hour night/48 hour day-cycle. The deadline is 22:00 GMT (+00:00). Please note the deadline is xx:59 and I will not accept votes/actions at xx:00. Do not post after the deadline. Any alignment relevant information posted after the deadline and before the flip will result in a modkill. The game will resume when the night post is up. There is no resolution period for night actions.
Credits: Thanks to pretty much every TL mafia player/host/mod/etc who has hosted and revised rulesets/guidance. Many thanks to Blazinghand, Artanis and Kitaman who have all provided me with much insight and guidance regarding hosting over my time here at TL. Much <3 to all of you!
This is a semi-open setup. Possible roles are known but the exact number is not.
The Contenders (Town) Recommended for your bar
Win Condition: The town win when they eliminate the pretenders or when the scumteam concede.
Talisker Storm (Town Vanilla):This role serves as a special shoutout to rayn, probably my new new go-to. A solid smokey whiskey with a solid bang for your money. A little something for everyone. You are a town vanilla, use your voice, vote, and palette to discern the imposters! You win with the town.
FLD Catskill Provisions New York Honey (Miller): Last summer, with the in-laws, we had the chance to get out to the Finger Lakes region Stateside. Burdett, NY based Finger Lakes Distilling has crafted a rye honey-infused whiskey that's only subtly sweet yet quite smokey and spicy. Too bad FLD are still in their infancy, because infancy unfortunately means lack of recognition. You are a miller. You are not aware. You return mafia-aligned checks. You win with the town.
Midleton Green Spot Single Pot Still (Wanderer): If you wanted to know what potpourri tasted like, here you go. Spicy but not overwhelmingly so, you will be tingled by the potpourri aftertaste. The aftertaste that is everywhere before you know it. You are a wanderer. You are not aware. Each night you will visit someone at random. You will not be told your target each night. You win with town.
Miyagikyo 12 (Detective): More body, more sherry, what's not to like? Unfortunately it is so difficult to get your hands on this whiskey that if you do, chances are, you've had your hand on a lot of bottles. Chances are, you know the tastes of many different drams and are able to tell one easily from another. You are the detective. Each night, you may check a player's alignment. That player will return town-aligned or mafia-aligned checks.
Nikka Coffey Malt Whiskey (Tracker): Strong, smooth, slick toffee malt delivers with ultra spiciness. This malt was created only last year and is only recently being more widely distributed. I'm hoping I'll see it more frequently in stores as opposed to relying on high end Asian restaurants to deliver. You are the tracker. Each night you can pick one target to see where they visit each night. You win with the town.
Lagavulin 16 (Medic): Mellow and smokey with a spicy finish. Rich as it is, it's always there to save the day. You are the medic. You can choose one individual to save each night. You win with the town.
Teeling Silver Reserve (Veteran):Mature over 21 years, it's got a great combination of smokiness and fruitiness. Astonishing finish. Easily topping most people's preferences with Irish whiskey. In fact, maybe quite hard to dislodge this one as an Irish favourite. You are the veteran. You have an extra night life. If you are hit with multiple kp, you die. If you are roleblocked, your passive is lost. You win with the town.
Sullivan's Cove French Oak Single Malt (Town Roleblocker): From Tazmania, Australia, you are on a steep rise to prominence as only a few years ago you produced the worst whiskey, now all of a sudden you are the best. French oak, single malt, you have topped them all. However you don't come cheap, and your purchase means the inevitable sacrifice of other spirits for most drinkers. You are the town roleblocker. Each night select one target to roleblock. You take precedence over all other night actions and resolve simultaneously with the mafia roleblocker. You win with the town.
The Pretenders (Mafia) Basically, what we feel should be banished from your cabinet...
Win Condition: The scum win when they reduce the town numbers to a level equivalent or less.
Glenfiddich (Mafia Godfather): You are amazing, but also bloody expensive. Yet you are the go-to drink for Half the Sky when she actually rolls mafia on TL, so that must count for something, right? Riggghhhhht? Well fact is, there are much better whiskeys out there, but you're just good enough to fool the so-called beginner palette! You are the Godfather. When checked you return "town-aligned" to detective checks. You are untrackable. Your passive cannot be roleblocked. You win with the Mafia.
Suntory Yamazaki Single Malt (Mafia Roleblocker) - As Japan's heralded single malt, you captured top honours in a few whiskey publications but does this mean you're any good? Nope! Unfortunately the masses don't seem to agree, so here you are, taking up shelf space, space that should be reserved for truly great whiskey which you are simply not. You are the mafia roleblocker. Each night, select one player to roleblock. You take precedence over all other night actions and resolve simultaneously with the town roleblocker. You win with the Mafia.
Balcones Texas Single Malt (Mafia Framer): A few years ago at Christmas, I celebrated with family at a large party Stateside. This malt I remember, and not for good reasons. This was candy. Molasses, apples, bananas, peaches. The worst part? Guests at the party were mixing it with soda. Massive fail. You are the mafia framer. Each night, you may select anyone of your choosing to frame. You may frame yourself. Your target will return the opposite alignment of their original. You win with the Mafia.
Laphroaig 15 (Mafia Rolecop): GlowingBear called this one a "sweaty butcher's ass." Now I know why. Overpowering and overly medicinal, the 10yr was even worse. If you can somehow get through to the aftertaste in this one, you could probably detect the flavour for any whiskey out there. You are the mafia rolecop. Each night you select a target. Your target's role and flavour name will be revealed the next morning. You win with the Mafia.
Jack Daniels (Mafia Vanilla): The crappiest American brand imaginable that people get so used to they don't care for the better quality that is out there. At least you are the go-to for cheap beverages for the university crowd. But that's about it. You are mafia vanilla and can deliver kp if you so choose. You win with the Mafia.
Additional Note
Johnnie Walker Blue Label (Strongman): Five years ago, I was in the bridal party at my cousin's wedding, and the groomsmen passed THIS around after the ceremony. It burnt the back of my throat. The entire bridal party gagged; of course the groomsmen had a laugh. Never again. The scumteam have one strongman shot they may use against any blue role which passes through all protection. The target, if blue, will die at phase change. This shot may be used at day or night when the mafia team notify the host. If roleblocked, this shot is refunded. If the shot hits a non-blue role, the shot is spent. Any member of the scumteam may choose to carry this shot and may do so in addition to anything else at night.
1 There are no notifications unless absolutely necessary. 2 There are no alignment changing mechanics. 3 There are no third party roles. 4 A mafia powerrole may carry KP and use their ability on someone else simultaneously. 5 The roleblockers resolve simultaneously. Any applicable secondary abilities will be stopped. 6 The veteran is roleblockable. 7 KP from opposing factions resolve simultaneously. 8 The scumteam are permitted to hold their shot if they wish.
Mafia KP = 1kp KP must be delivered by individuals and subject to RB/tracking rules. Limited shot, and Multishot Dynamics: All blue roles except for the veteran are available in the following configurations: 1-shot, 2-shot, and multishot. A single shot means you can only use your power once. 2-shot means it can only be used twice. Multishot means it can be used as many times as you want. If you are 1- or 2-shot, and you are roleblocked, your shot is refunded (except for the roleblocker, which will resolve simultaneously). Role PMs will be prefixed with 1-shot or 2-shot if you are 1-shot or 2-shot, and will have no prefix if you are multishot.
I also want to mention that I will allow newer players to shadow any of those that play if they agree to it. I will provide each pair (preferably one player with a shadow) a QT they can talk about the direction of the game.
If the participating player rolls scum, the shadow will not have access to mafia QT, but still can learn a great deal about what it takes to play scum side.

I would have lynched you 100% at that point, I paid too little attention to the mechanical strategy and just sheeped rayn. Honestly should have taken more time to think things through. I can't blame Bill Murray at all, he's more than free to rage at me all he wants, though he should probably realise that 2 of the 5 hammer votes on him were mafia so....
I'm surprised rayn hasn't torn into my whiskey (role) list being the expert he is. I've had about half the ones I listed, husband has had about a half and then I just filled in the rest.
Though rayn recommends the Dark Storm for Talisker...and I can never find Japanese whiskey except for at high-end restaurants. Damn me.
Yeah I have had the 10 and the Storm, but the reviews for Dark Storm don't seem as good though rayn seems to like it more. What is the actual difference? Just smokier?

For games I've rolled mafia, I actually took shots of Glenfiddich everytime we mislynched or nightkilled townies. sicklucker will know what I'm talking about here.

Player roster updated. One co-host spot still open.
Because we are running into the weekend, I am hoping we can start the game Sunday night at 22:00 GMT (+00:00) assuming we lock in the remainder of the spots by then.
If there are any questions regarding rules or mechanics, this is the time to ask them. The only real change in my general ruleset is that failure to vote will result in a modkill, everything else is standard.

yeah I've heard of that and that is awesome =D what do you do when you lynch mafia ?
As town, I usually take in a glass of wine. I take two glasses if we eliminate scum or if they concede (see NSM 9).

lol isn't this why Nocturne can't play Mafia with you.
100%. He will read me from the sidelines and then he gives me this look of horror when he sees me pour the whiskey at EoD. It's pretty funny actually. Sad thing is, he doesn't need to see me drink, he has a god-tier read on me regardless of my alignment for obvious reasons.
I think French Oak is in reference to the casks it's aged in. And no lol, he'll check this thread in due time I'm sure. Trying to get him to play another one, but he'll probably edge towards the newbie. We'll see.
Quick straw poll on the deadline - I was asked if I could move the deadline up an hour to 2200 BST (1700 EDT). Do people prefer the default time or an hour ahead? Personally I have no preference.
I sat across the table from both Celestial and Scott as I poured another shot of whiskey for each of them.
"So rayn is visiting you next week?" asked Celestial. "What for?"
"Holiday," I replied. "He's actually visiting several of his friends down here, but also we were probably going to meet up with some of the others we knew, have a few shots, shoot the breeze, catch up on life."
"Oh really?" Celestial replied, "too bad I've got interviews all week, otherwise I'd love to join."
"He's due in this weekend, but that doesn't mean we can't give him a good show," I replied, "my only thing to be nervous on is his, ahem, very discerning taste for whiskey."
"Discerning?" asked Scott, "surely he can't be more picky than my father. I mean, he won't go for the Japanese whiskey or anything crazy, but...."
I cut him off. "You have no idea Scott. He has drank spirits from pretty much everywhere. He's given me pointers on how to branch out based on my tastes but more interestingly he has pretty much all the knowledge you can imagine for any price point imaginable. I mean whiskey really is his thing."
"Surprised he doesn't just move further north and open his own shop if he thinks he's quite the expert," remarked Celestial.
"Well running your own shop is an entirely different animal," I laughed, "in any case, he's here this weekend. I am going to try and sort out my stash of spirits by then. Or at least take out the imposters before someone in his crew gets sick and blames it all on me."
"Did someone say free whiskey?" snickered Celestial, "well I could use a bottle of whatever in case those job interviews go south, you know."
"Or maybe one to celebrate?" I quipped. "Think positive! I think you will do quite well, but you'd be even better to head out and get a good quality bottle instead of the stuff I really need rid of."
The confirmation period has begun. PMs are going out. We are almost there! The game will commence tomorrow 28 September at 22:00 GMT (+00:00) or in .
Those on the roster, please confirm you're ready to drink up by typing ##teamwhiskey.
Those wanting the observer QT please PM either of Kelsier or Fidei86. Shadows have until the silence period (approx 45 minutes prior to start) to make arrangements if not done so already.
Also an FYI, we will not be using the script tracker for this game. Voting will be in the voting thread.
Finally, another reminder if anyone has any questions, you may ask openly until silence period. Once the game is underway do not ask the hosts questions in thread and only do so in PMs or your QT if it applies.

It shouldn't be, as long as the Americans actually play.... (glares)
Should be a fun game though, I'll try my best not to be overly abrasive, but I do apologize in advance.
I honestly had the same problem in my first couple of newbies....solo EU in a sea of Americans.
Blazinghand sighed as he wrapped up another workday coding for 18 hours. He met his girlfriend at the local lounge as she ordered dinner for two near the bar. He sighed as he slumped in his seat, exasperated.
"I need a shot or two, anything." he muttered.
"Any preference?" she asked.
"Not really," he replied, "maybe I'll start with a few fireballs and then work into something stronger. Really don't care, I just need to get out of work mode."
"Fine, two shots of fireball it is."
"Now about our upcoming vacation to Japan," he started, "what do you want to see? I have a list of 20 bazillion things and we really haven't made up our minds on what to do here."
"Hiking, for starters," she started, "the weather forecast is looking to be great."
"Alright, I'll sort a few days for that, definitely."
"How long of a layover do we have in Seoul again?"
"That's the shitty part," Blazinghand replied, "I want to say north of six hours. At least it gives us time to do duty free shopping. The whisky store there is supposed to be really good though. Looked it up, there's a few tastings available in the morning hours, which is about when we'll be landing."
"Getting sick of fireballs?"
"It's not real whisky, hon," he replied, "you gotta go micro really for domestics or out here? Australia or Japan. You could start with a Jameson though and see how it goes, I've always had a thing for Irish whiskey but in Seoul, Japan and Australia are up and coming things. It'll be a nice thing to pass the time."
"Probably too strong for me. I prefer the sweeter stuff."
"To each their own," Blazinghand replied, "but honestly you're there for a few hours, just try it, I think you'd be surprised on what you're missing out on. Most of that stuff you can't really get at home. So why not?"
Day 1 has begun. We are underway - Day 1 has begun! The voting thread is here. Day 1 ends in at 22:00 GMT (+00:00). At that time, the player with the most votes gets lynched.
29 September 2015 Seoul-Incheon International Airport, South Korea
"So what do you think so far?" Blazinghand asked his girlfriend as they sampled small amounts of whiskey at the duty-free shop. "Japanese, Australian...."
"Um, how about none of the above?" she replied. "Honestly I'm pretty disappointed."
"You don't like the Japanese whiskey?" he asked. "It's pretty rare to get outside the States. You can get Scotch, nearly all of these brands are available back home. Australian is also quite rare, and so are Indian, even some of the more obscure Irish brands."
"Mehhhhhhhhhhh," she commented. "I really don't know. Don't feel like spending much money. Japanese whiskey is really disgusting."
Blazinghand handed her a shot of Nikka Coffey Malt.
"What do you think of this?"
She drank the malt and promptly spat it out.
"Fuck that shit. I hate it."
scott31337, the Nikka Coffey Malt (1-shot Tracker), has been rejected!

Kitaman walked in with his family into the Finger Lakes Distillery and smiled as they all sampled some of the distillery's latest offerings.
"All good," he remarked, "but I think I'm sticking with the classic Catskill Honey. Probably the most versatile of the bunch. Janet, what are you getting? The bourbon rye?"
"Nah, I think I'm going with the honey as well. Basically what we had last year. Maybe that or the blueberry liquor. I mean I really can't decide."
"Honey, honey, honey!" screamed Kita's daughter as she danced around her dad.
"No, no, no." he replied, "you are just a little too young for that. I'll bring you back when you're older." Kita's eyes wandered to a few craft snacks the place had on sale. He grabbed a bag of chocolate popcorn and made a beeline for the counter.
"Alright, so I'll have two of the Catskill Honey, and this bag of popcorn."
"You said two of the honey?" the cashier inquired.
"Yes."
"I'm sorry, but we're actually out of stock. Our honey supplier had a massive shortage."
"Oh for fuck's sake..." muttered Kita under his breath as he paid for the popcorn and left.
When he arrived home with the group, he went immediately to his whiskey cabinet and rearranged the bottles, only to discover an empty bottle of Miyagikyo 12.
"Shit," he muttered, "who the hell finished this and didn't tell me? Guess someone's making a trip to the duty free on my next trip out..."
coolTLname, the FLD Catskill Honey (Miller), is out of stock! Damdred, the Miyagikyo 12 (Detective), has vanished!

Artanis smiled as guests piled into his home for his party to celebrate finishing his degree. His sister had the bar set up and was happily pouring drinks for their friends. It was no small wonder, as the last few weeks of uni had been excruciating for him, but now that it was all behind him, it was time to let loose, at least before the real world hit him in the rear.
A few feet away, Shining was enjoying himself hitting on the ladies left and right. But for the second straight night, he ran into Koshi who didn’t take too well to seeing his nemesis.
“What the hell are you doing here?” muttered Koshi. “Stay the hell out of my face.” he retorted at him. "Lex has hired some security...you want a piece of this?” yelled Koshi, holding up his fist. “Why not? I could use a little practice.” “Practice? For what? Not like you’re going to get anywhere with your fighting.” muttered Koshi.
That's when he decided he’d had enough.
“That’s it, rat bastard. You're going down.” he replied to Koshi.
“Don't think so considering the amount you drink and smoke, dipshit.” yelled Koshi.
Throwing down his cigar and removing his gloves, Shining immediately went for Koshi with an uppercut to the jaw. Whilst some partygoers scattered, others gathered around on the large back porch and cheered the two combatants.
Shining doubled over, allowing Koshi to fall off the table he started to approach him on, and as he tumbled down, he kicked Koshi in the shin and bolted for the far end of the yard. Koshi got back up and frantically searched for projectiles, but seeing none, he spotted Fidei drinking with a svelte blonde nearby. Just as she was about to give him a lap dance in a dark corner of the yard, Koshi grabbed the nearly empty beer bottle out of Fidei's hand and chased Shining to the far end.
“FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!” screamed the crowd as Shining jumped back on top of a table to gain a height advantage on his opponent. As he heaved his arms up however, Koshi immediately hurled the bottle, landing on his head and knocking him flat on the table. He then pounded him once in the stomach and then a second time in the face.
“You want a piece of me? Who’s the dipshit NOW?!?!?” screamed Koshi.
Koshi promptly knocked him out as Artanis attempted to calm everyone down.
"Damn straight you can tell he had a little too much Jack Daniels to drink."
The Shining, Jack Daniels (Mafia Vanilla), was knocked out!
I have banned The Shining permanently from the whiskey bar. Day 3 has ended.

6 October 2015 Arnhem, Gelderland, the Netherlands
I sighed as the fight cleared up.
"You sure about that Koshi?" I said to him in passing. "I just saw him knock back six shots or so of Jack Daniels. And he wonders why he got knocked out."
"Jack?" replied Koshi, "that shit tastes like skunk piss. Never ever drink American whiskey, Americans in general have shitty beer and spirits anyways. Almost anything is better than American whiskey."
"Koshi," I replied as I strode past the police taking Shining out, "trust me, you're preaching to the choir. Their wines aren't terrible, actually I like them, but I'm fully aware American whiskey is beyond awful."
I turned around and saw the police pull out two more bottles of whiskey the Shining had tried to grab - another bottle of Jack and a bottle of Talisker Storm.
"You really can't fix stupid, can you?" snarled Koshi at Shining.
MoosyDoosy, the Sullivan's Cove French Oak (Town Roleblocker), was spared. GlowingBear, the Talisker Storm (Town Vanilla), was spared. LightningStrike, the Talisker Storm (Town Vanilla), was spared. raynpelikoneet, the Talisker Storm (Town Vanilla), was spared. rsoultin, the Midleton Green Spot Single Pot Still (Wanderer), was spared.
Rels, the Balcones Texas Single Malt (Mafia Framer), has conceded! sicklucker, the Suntory Yamazaki Single Malt (Mafia Roleblocker) has conceded!
Town Victory!
Carbost, Isle of Skye (Observer QT) is here. Suntory Distillery, Osaka (Mafia QT) is here. Role and Action List is here.
I leave it to the discretion of shadows/players whether they want to release their individual shadow QTs.
I would like to thank everyone for playing and congratulations to the town on their victory. Cheers Kelsier and Fidei for helping with co-hosting and a shoutout to Kelsier for the Day 3 flavour! Also thanks to Blazinghand who helped with balance and mechanics.
A special shoutout to Damdred who was the first player in Obs QT to nail the scumteam in full.
Please stick around for post-game analysis and conversation. Closing action (ie banlist) will be noted separately in the banlist thread.

For future reference in a no coaching game, if you have any questions on a blue role AS a blue role.
1 Ask the mods the specs - you did that in one of your PMs so that was fine. 2 Reference mafiascum - they give you the most basics strategy on how to approach your role.

We also made a mistake a few hours ago. SL and I adviced The Shining to not say anything; that was while GB was being pushed. If he had entered the thread that moment with angry posts, I'm pretty sure Moosy was the lynch.
Talking about the "angry post meta" fucking thing. I really felt we were fucked by that at some point. Emotion can be faked and I've seen people catching fake emotions all the time
100%. Just look, LS immediately townread sicklucker and Shining for that...
Moosy, the general rule for a town roleblocker is that early game you try and roleblock potential tinfoil scum or someone you think is scum where others are not. This is because mafia will want the most townread person or the best performing person to deliver the kp.
In the latter stages of the game it becomes a little more obvious with flips whom to roleblock but it's something to consider.

Damdred had the entire scumteam nailed as soon as he died via strongman. Good on him.
And much agreed with Trfel, he in my eyes was MVP. He lacked thread pull and interestingly enough was more influential through his death because of that.

Several comments on this. I already commented on the emotion. As for blues being lynchbait, I cannot tell you how many times this has happened. Whenever I've rolled mafia, I've been coached/told/warned you ALWAYS need to make a backup plan for if someone claims, you either need to be prepared to counterclaim them or you need to have more mislynch options beyond your blue lynchbait. The mistake you made here as mafia was that you put your eggs in one basket (Moosy) or had only one plan that depended on him being town vanilla.
Otherwise you and the crew did an excellent job and had enough people fooled. Scumside isn't easy and requires grit, intuition and adaptability.
I was very prepared for a last minute shennanies on MoosyDoosy - and as he was the ONLY kp stopping role it would have given you lot a Mafia victory, direct.

The fact that he died instead of Rels or Rayn pointed out to him being correct in most of his reads. I had to go back and read him again.
As I said to rsoultin, truffle is not my acolyte, he is my successor

I don't. I don't read your posts when you do stupid stuff jsut for the sake of doing stupid stuff.. It's irritating and doesn't help anyone. It's just stupid if you are town.
You were really townie throughout the game, especially on N2. I don't understand why you have to do some dumb reaction tests because it just cannot help in any way, you just get scumread for it.
Alright, the elephant in the room - this is NOT just at rayn but the townplay in general Day 1 and Day 2.
Just hear me out please. I realise people are going to say LOL HTS, it's easy to say when you have perfect information, but the fact of the matter is:
1 Townies DO illogical things from time to time. You cannot assume that a townie will play optimally 100% of the time. Suboptimal play does not mean a person is EXCLUSIVE mafia. Vivax gave me GREAT advice in Gaiden - is someone's read progression/case/overall behaviour believable from their perspective, even if suboptimal? That is the way to look into stuff. There are people who play very lurky or whose towngames are very scummy because they are new (coolTLname) or don't know what they are doing (Moosy), etc, and it's really important to try and see things from their perspective.
2 VCA (voting analysis) speaks volumes. I was a bit surprised that it was not used or looked into as much.
3 I have been guilty of this - but some of you need to watch how you use meta to defend people. People were hard defending the mafia for poorly rooted meta reasons or altogether inexplicable reasons. It made it harder partially for town to work together.
4 Town needed to do a much better job of LISTENING TO EACH OTHER. THERE ARE THREE MAFIA IN THE GAME. You might feel very strongly about one mafia, but someone else might be paying attention to another player for whatever reasons. There was far too much shouting over each other, and marvellosity even said in obs qt that this was partially related to #3.
5 NK analysis. Shining was strongly implicated from the deaths of Marv and Trfel. GlowingBear caught on to it but failed to convince people.
These are the things that stuck out most to me, but I feel that town could have worked a little better together the first few days simply by listening to each other and trying to understand the other perspective. Not everyone in every game is experienced as the other. And it makes it a bit more pleasant to play with others as well, foster an environment that makes people want to show they are town.
And those of you taking a break, I completely understand.
I understand if certain people/things/elements have burnt you out, or if RL gives you issues (I can totally hear you all on that one) or just need a break from the site, but do consider returning at some point, I feel there have been some good quality games with some of you in the past, and there are a few I wish I could roll scum with (Damdred, Rasputin, etc) still.
Good times were had, and good times will be had again I'm sure. <3

1. Everybody talks but nobody listens 2. People scum reads people for reasons that doesn't make them Mafia.
Whenever I feel like actually playing I always remember what Iamperfection told me, which is to analyse people through mindsets
Town wants to catch Mafia Mafia wants to survive
The moment it came to my head I instantly put sicklucker to the lynch list.
If people want to play seriously, they have to think about this
You said the same thing I did but in 1/3 the words because I'm so bad xD
Great minds think alike GB <3
And good on you for remembering some of the things I taught you about hosting, you cited in game, Incidentally you didn't remember some of the most critical parts - if you had, you would have known that four blue roles is NOT possible at all in m13, but you did well enough. If you had your old host qt saved up you would see where I said this in there for Carnaval <3

On October 07 2015 08:43 Trfel wrote: Half the Sky, you need to play more often!
Seriously, just play XD
It's easy to stand on the host high-horse, harder to make it happen yourself. I want to see YOU foster a healthy thread environment, that's possibly the hardest thing in the game to do....
Honestly I want to be able to play more in general. In the next 5 weeks, I have 2 weeks in Singapore and another week in NYC and somewhere in there a few weekends of weekend travel - I'll just put it out there but on Friday my husband and I celebrate our 5th year anniversary...so the next few we're doing some awesome fun things together.
I think once RL settles down (mmaaaayyyybeeeee the holidays?) I'd love to play again, but I've already had to replace out once when I was on business travel, and my last few days/cycle in Gaiden were in NYC and I did not fare well, so I have to be VERY careful that when I sign up for games it just does not interfere with travel or personal things.
That's the beauty of hosting and cohosting....vote counts and general setups they require spurts of time, and not continuous play which I simply cannot spare when I'm on the road and especially if I have to travel outside Europe.
Honestly I miss playing town with Rasputin, you and a few others....damn.
On October 07 2015 21:10 raynpelikoneet wrote: And i really think MoosyDoosy should have been modkilled for not voting.
Meh. He clearly unvoted to vote himself, so if the selfvote is not allowed, the unvote shouldn't count either.
Will comment quickly on this. Obviously the mafia concession made this a moot point but I have been in two other games where someone voted then unvoted and they were not modkilled.
Reference Not Themed - one player (Slam I think?) voted someone, then he unvoted. He wasn't modkilled. Next cycle or two, at least one other player failed to vote altogether and that person was modkilled.
Several players this game self-voted - going forward in my voting thread, I will put that in my OP so that people are clear they cannot self-vote. But I just basically took the last vote they recorded prior to the self-vote - in my vote counts they were left off altogether.
If a player self-voted from the off, they would have been treated as if they had not voted at all and would have received the same warnings from the moderators as if they had not voted at all.
I realise we have a difference of opinion here based on your subsequent post but that is where I'm coming from on this.
On October 07 2015 12:57 Damdred wrote: Town basically has a limited tracker that can catch any of the mafia (could get unlucky and track wanderer) besides that more than likely you have a confirmed town from that n1 more than likely.
Or he catches mafia and we get off on a good start.
The multishot dt is the strongest role early as its extremely unlikely that they get the framed target and I was never checking cool n1 so either I found scum or confirmed a town. No gf in this setup was hard.
And rb was the strongest town role in the game especially late. Its a mix between medic and cop.
Strongarm helps a bit. But town basically has three cops.
Mafia has a rb and a framer. Unless they get lucky with a frame or rb one of the roles yeah.
If we played optimal could come into d2 with 5 confirmed town with knowing one person at least didn't carry the shot.
However say moosey rb SL n1 he carries kp whops we have I check shining (which I almost did to make sure) And Scott tracked rels
That's super unlikely obviously but I don't think its fair for all mafia to be outer in one night if unlucky with power roles. While the mafia has little recourse to supreme luck in this setup
On October 07 2015 12:58 Damdred wrote: And strong man is kinda a moot point because it relies on a lucky shot or blues being dumb. Which they were
Will also comment here as well. Seeing your comments on this, I had an honest chat with BH last night on the 3 investigatives and he felt that was less of a problem than the fact the DT was a full-out DT, and that instead I should have nerfed the DT by (1) making him parity (2) nerfing his sanity or making it unknown to the thread whether it was a sane or whatever or (3) making it limited shot.
To him, upon a second look through, he felt 3 invs were less of the problem because it is infintessimally small chance all three will hit all three different mafia simultaneously and you also assume the framer doesn't tamper anything for the DT by framing one of their own and that the DT alone should not have been as powerful. 3 invs wasn't a problem to him alone, it was just the DT.
To me, I felt the RB had to be in there largely because of the presence of the strongman and because he could stop kp (the medic cannot stop the strongman by definition).
To that end I was told I should have made my strongman shot factional (instead of trackable at night) since making it dependent on a carrier makes it swingy, or dependent on how that mafia player has been playing.
I got several complaints as well on how "powerful" the strongman shot was but again...I made that conditional. I really really wanted to discourage blue claiming this game...and I debated instituting soup kills when I was designing this game, but doing a blue role strongman like what was done in Witchcraft 3 I was told was much simpler way to do this.
That said, I do appreciate you said this, as I've said before I really do care about the games I run and anything I can do to improve that I much appreciate. I wouldn't have gotten the feedback from him if I didn't run the postmortem by him.
If I had to do this again, I think I would have made the DT parity instead of straight alignment. By definition, the DT cannot confirm anything night 1.
On October 08 2015 03:47 Damdred wrote: I do wish that there were more games that used sanity btw Hts it would change blue roles slightly and cause some interesting checks.
I looked up sanities and I understand those basics but from reading I don't understand how they impact the blues aside from framers doing their normal thing. A godfather/miller by definition isn't blue so I am a bit confused...
...or do you mean it makes the DT role more interesting? I mean I get that insane might take a few days or so to figure out, but how often is anything (or should anything) other than sane/insane be used in normal minis or normal setups? Compared to you or some of the other long standing players/hosts I have yet to play a game with anything other than normal DTs (alignment or parity) here (Aperture 4 excepted, but we all know that game's roles are just way out there regardless).
