Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.
The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.
Rules:
Cheating: Standard rules apply. If you're not familiar with them, please read them below. + Show Spoiler +
Cheating includes (but is not limited to): 1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information. 2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town. 3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role. 4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles. 5. Posting screenshots of your inbox. 6. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host. 7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip. 8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts. 9. Betting items outside of the game in exchange for in-game benefits. 10. Sharing accounts with other players unless cleared by the host in advance. Otherwise, only you may post on your account. 11. Breadcrumbing the specific phrasing of your role PM. Do not compare the phrasing in your role PM to prove your alignment. You can claim the abilities you have, but you can't use the specific phrasing of your role PM. 12. Posting a false role PM phrased as if you received it from the host. You can still fake roleclaim, but you cannot make it look like you are posting a PM you received from the host.
Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.

Activity: You must post in this thread once per day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled. This is the bare minimum, allowable for a single cycle if for some reason you are temporarily very busy. If your average activity is not significantly more than one post per day/night cycle you may not be welcome in my games in future.

Spam: Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. Play Mafia here. This also means you should condense your posts when possible. 15 one-liners in 30 minutes is unacceptable.
Editing: Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be replaced. This is the one part of the site where it is okay to be double posting, even triple-posting. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything.
Inappropriate posts: If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate. If you do not like how someone is talking to you, please PM a host, Flamewheel, or Mig before involving the TL staff. If you are unsatisfied with how the situation is resolved, then you can appeal to the TL staff normally. I will take this rule very seriously, and even if you do not commit a modkillable offence you may not be welcome in any future games I run. Consider yourself warned.
Reporting posts: The report button is a nice feature for regular TL, but not for this forum. We prefer to deal with things in house if possible to avoid confusion among the TL staff. If you have a problem with how someone is posting, talk to the host, co-host, Flamewheel, or Mig before using your report button. Please do not use your report button for anything other than inappropriate posts which you feel are not being dealt with adequately. Do not hesitate to contact myself or a cohost if you find another player's posts offensive or otherwise unacceptable.
Ban discussions: Please wait until this game is over to talk about replacements/modkills and bans resulting from this game.
Play to win. This means you play your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.
This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason without a ban. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM your host if you need to leave the game. If you have a good reason to leave the game I will be understanding.
You have been warned.

Out of thread communication:
It is common for mafia (and town circles if PMs are allowed) to use a medium outside of TL such as QuickTopics or IRC to communicate during the game. Please be mindful that other players may be more tech savvy than you and they may attempt impersonate members of your team or attempt to infiltrate your chat. You use these media at your own risk.
Voting rules:
1. Voting is done in this thread. Please keep votes here, and only vote here. Do not PM us your vote. 2. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote Qatol. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance. To change your vote, post ##unvote, then vote normally. 3. No conditional voting. 4. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game. 5. This game uses Plurality Lynch. i.e. the player who has the most votes, or had more votes most recently in case of a tie, is lynched at the deadline. 6. Voting is mandatory. You may NOT abstain. 7. You may vote for a no-lynch by posting ##vote: no lynch in the thread.
Game-specific rules:
Modkills: This game follows the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, your punishment will go beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to it for questions about your punishment. If you want to use this game to sit out your ban, please PM Flamewheel or post in the Ban List.
Replacements This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made in the game until Day Three. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list. Replacements are greatly preferred over modkills, so please PM one of the hosts if you are willing to replace in and don't ask for the obs QT.

PMs PMs are (not) allowed in this game.
Time Cycle: This game will follow a 48 hour day cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. The setup is a semi-closed setup for 13 players. The possible roles are given below, however the number of each role which exists are not given. The game is inherently balanced for both sides depending on the types and numbers of roles that appear. Mafia wins when they are equal to or greater than the number of town or this is inevitable. Town wins by eliminating all mafia members. Mafia kill power is always 1.
You are a Mason. You may communicate with your partner <NAME> in a Mason QT provided <HERE> or via TL.net PMs. The alignment of your partner is NOT guaranteed.
You may not be protected from night-kills.
Communication via other channels may be permitted, but check with the host first.
You are a Parity Detective. During each night-phase you may submit the name of a player to the hosts. At the beginning of the next day you will be told whether their guilty/innocent status is the same or different to the last player checked. This means you will receive no information until Night 2.
Your check result will be of the form "Same" or "Different".
There may exist powers in the game which interfere with your check.
You are a 1-Shot Detective. Once per game during a night-phase you may submit the name of a player to the hosts. At the beginning of the next day you will be told whether they are guilty or innocent.
There may exist powers in the game which interfere with your check.
You are a Doctor. During each night-phase you may submit the name of a player to the hosts. That player will be protected from a single kill that night.
Neither you nor your target will be told if the protection was successful. You may not protect the same player on two consecutive nights.
You are a Jailkeeper. During each night-phase you may submit the name of a player to the hosts. That player will be protected from a single kill that night, and will also be roleblocked.
Neither you nor your target will be told if the protection was successful. You may not jail the same player on two consecutive nights.
Your target will be informed that they were roleblocked, whether they have a power or not. This notification will be indistinguishable from notifications due to any other type of roleblock. If your target attempts to use a limited-shot power it will not be consumed.
If you and a roleblocker target each other, their action takes precedence; you are roleblocked, they are not.
You are a 1-Shot Vigilante. Once per game during a night-phase you may submit the name of a player to the hosts. You will shoot that player during the night.
You are a Veteran. Each night you will protect yourself from a single KP. If you successfully block a KP you will be notified of this fact, and will not be able to protect yourself on future nights.
If you are roleblocked you will not be able to protect yourself on that night.
You are a Mafia Goon. You have no special powers, but may carry out the mafia night-kill.
You win with the mafia. Your teammates are <NAME> the <ROLE> and <NAME> the <ROLE>. A Mafia QT has been provided for your use <HERE>. You may also communicate via TL.net PMs. If you wish to use an alternate means of communication please consult with the host first.

Your target will be informed that they were roleblocked, whether they have a power or not. This notification will be indistinguishable from notifications due to any other type of roleblock. Summary:
Deadline is at 00:00 GMT (+00:00). I'm comfortable with any time within a few hours either side of this, so if there is a commonly expressed preference before the game this is flexible.
Voting rule is Plurality. i.e. the player who has the most votes, or had more votes most recently in case of a tie, is lynched at the deadline.
The game starts with 10 town and 3 mafia. There are no third parties.
Mafia KP is always 1.
Town wins when all mafia are dead.
Mafia wins when all town are dead or this is inevitable (assuming they send in nightkills and do not vote for one another).
Target is notified of roleblocks. Neither doctor nor target is notified of doctor save.
All role PMs are in the OP.
Play nice.
Other Notes: Notable or unusual points are in italics.
If a jailkeeper and a roleblocker target each other, the roleblocker takes precedence (i.e. only the JK is roleblocked.)
If two roleblockers or two jailkeepers target each other they are both roleblocked and informed.
Masons who are roleblocked will not be prevented from communicating with their partner(s).
Masons are NOT confirmed town to each other.
Masons cannot be protected from KP.
Millers are NOT self-aware.
If a veteran is roleblocked they will not be resistant to KP that night.
One person on the mafia team may carry out the kill each night. The mafia can choose not to kill. The mafia can kill each other. If the mafia member chosen to kill on a particular night is roleblocked, no kill will occur.
All roleblocks will result in the target being notified.
If at any time I receive PMs from all players requesting shortened days, all days commencing after that time will be shortened to 24 hours. Please hold in-thread discussion of this possibility to a minimum.
Please do not discuss the possibility of mafia conceding in the thread. If mafia want to concede, they'll let me know.
Wisdom of the Crowds If you do not wish to play with a player for any reason, PM me, if I receive enough votes against a player (five or more) then he or she will not be allowed to play in this game. Your vote against a player will be held in the strictest confidence. You *must* be signed up to vote against someone.
I also reserve the right to disallow players from this game myself. I don't expect to do a lot of this, though.
I will do whatever I feel is necessary, before and during the game, to ensure people who sign up to this game and make an effort to play to expectations (as defined below) enjoy playing this game themselves. If you do not satisfy these criteria, expect no consideration from me.
Any /ins must also include the following: "I will not request replacement, modkills or other mod action in the thread during the game." or they will not be accepted. If you need to request mod actions, do it PRIVATELY. This has been rescinded, but you are still quite welcome to say it!
Moderation and Behaviour:
I expect two things from everybody who plays this game:
1. Play in such a way that everybody can have fun. 2. Play to win.
I view the second rule as a part of the first.
I appreciate that Mafia is an emotional game, and that furthermore many Mafia players use annoying others and gauging their emotional reactions as a strategy. I don't want to cramp your style and I will try to be permissive - however, be aware that there are limits to my tolerance.
Unacceptable behaviours include:
Personal attacks (as in, attacking the person rather than the argument)
Unreasonable threats, either in-game or out-game (e.g. "Do as I say or I will spam up the thread for the rest of the game", "Do as I say or I'll get myself modkilled", "Do as I say or I'll kick you from the game I'm running", etc.)
Basically, posts which aren't about the current game
I will treat all of these very seriously. If you have a problem with another player's posting and I haven't done anything about it, feel free to bring it to my attention privately - either I haven't noticed it, I have a different opinion on the permissibility of their posting, or I have dealt with it privately. Don't be upset if I continue to apparently do nothing about it - I may have dealt with it privately and not wish to share that information with you, even postgame.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT ABUSE THESE RULES. If you have a problem with someone else's posting bring it to me PRIVATELY. If you attempt to leverage for in-game purposes your dissatisfaction (genuine or not) with someone else's play, for whatever motives, I WILL modkill you. You will not be given a warning first.
Don't talk about replacing out, ragequitting etc. in the thread either. If you need to leave for whatever reason, talk to me privately and we can make arrangements.
Yes, perhaps I'm being tyrannical. I have some distaste myself for these measures but I think they're necessary to ensure that everyone who plays has a good time. If that bothers you too much, just don't sign up.
On February 20 2014 10:36 WaveofShadow wrote: /in Fucking 7 EST deadlines though; last 3 games I've played in were like this.
Any later than this deadline starts to become impossible for Europeans and much earlier gets inconvenient for both myself and people coming home from work in America, I think. Once the signups have mostly filled up we can discuss shifting the deadline to suit the player list.

I don't anticipate this filling and starting before Monday, but signups can be fickle I guess. Your preference re. hydras is noted, I'd like to get a few more opinions on that before making a decision.
Masons being unprotectable was a rule from LXIV I liked a lot, so I thought I'd throw it in. As for why a mafia mason can't be protected... that was mostly whimsy.

I'm going to wait and see what happens re. GSL IV before I add you to the list. I don't think this game will have started before that situation is resolved in any case.
The one game I remember playing with Vivax he shot his scumbuddy and claimed vigilante. Good times
One slot remains - if kushm4sta is not banned following GSL IV the slot is his, otherwise it is open. Hopefully this will be resolved in the next 24 hours.
We are still looking for replacements - if you sign up to replace, please indicate whether or not you are willing to take the starting slot if it becomes available.
If you would like the Observer QT, please let us know in the thread or via PM.
Assuming bumatlarge is happy to fill the final slot if Kush is unable, the game is now full - more replacements would not go amiss, however.
Since we have 4+ Europeans by my count I think the deadline is probably best staying where it is, rather than being any later.
I think we can aim to start at Wednesday, Feb 26 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00), though if that is not long enough notice for anyone or if Kush's status is not cleared up before then I'm fine with pushing it back another day or two.

The (Demilitarised) Limited Offensive Unit Cosa Nostra of the Culture was not on any particular assignment. The Idiran War was far in the past, and there appeared to be no immediate threat of large-scale conflict in the immediate future. As such, very little urgency applied to the actions of the run-of-the-mill Culture vessel. Of course, a Mind associated with Contact Section might have ulterior motives in its wandering; but such would not be obvious, and might well not be publicised.
Accompanied by a skeleton crew of thirteen, mostly along for the novelty and the ride rather than any necessity, the Cosa Nostra meandered from star to star. It encountered many wondrous sights, but nothing troubling - let alone dangerous. Which made it all the more puzzling to the other Culture Minds it had been communicating with when the LOU stopped responding to its mail.
While most of its correspondents concluded that the Cosa Nostra had temporarily broken off communications in a fit of pique, the truth was far more sinister - for the Mind of the Cosa Nostra had been destroyed. For the remaining inhabitants of the vessel, this meant two things. First, since the control of the ship had rested solely with the Mind, they were adrift in space until such time as they could be rescued.
Second, they were in great danger; for since no external threats had been responsible for the Mind's death, the perpertrators must have come from within. The Culture Minds are said to have near god-like power... thus, any entity capable of defeating one was truly to be feared.
Remember, all flavour is just flavour.
If I refer to anyone (in flavour or otherwise) with an incorrect pronoun feel free to shoot me a PM and let me know.
Day 1 begins now and will end at Friday, Feb 28 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00). Remember that you must vote before the end of the day.
If you have not received your Role PM let me know ASAP.

Thanks, fixed. I'll get it right at deadline, rest assured.
For a group of sophonts who had never experienced great suffering, unrequited needs, or great conflict, the crew developed a mob mentality suprisingly fast.
Suki was the first to be thrown out an airlock.
Suki the Mafia Godfather has been lynched!
Night 1 begins now and will end at Saturday, Mar 01 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00). Remember to send any night actions to all hosts via PM.
A further complication of the loss of the ship's Mind was that many of the safety protocols were no longer in effect. Two of the crew found themselves in areas which rapidly depressurised, killing them. It was unclear whether these deaths had occured due to foul play.
raynpelikoneet the Vanilla Townie has been killed! Toadesstern the Mafia Roleblocker has been killed!
A reminder to anyone that missed it: Mocsta was modkilled during the night, he was a VT. Do not discuss modkills until postgame.
Day 2 begins now and will end at Monday, Mar 03 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00).
Since I have received a non-zero number of requests for it, I will bring this rule from the OP to your attention:
"If at any time I receive PMs from all players requesting shortened days, all days commencing after that time will be shortened to 24 hours. Please hold in-thread discussion of this possibility to a minimum."
Do not discuss which of you is for and against this. Just PM me if you wish to request it.
The crew knew there was only one threat left aboard, and by the end of the day-cycle had chosen another among them to take a walk out an airlock, though he protested his innocence. On a further examination of his belongings, they found they had not chosen correctly.
JarJarDrinks the Vanilla Townie has been lynched!
Night 2 begins now and will end at Tuesday, Mar 04 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00). Remember to send any night actions to all hosts via PM.
When the crew assembled for morning role-call, one failed to arrive. The ship was searched from top to bottom, but he seemed to have disappeared without a trace. Had he found something incriminating... or was somebody simply threatened by his inquisitiveness?
Cavalinho the Parity Detective has been killed!
Day 3 begins now and will end at Thursday, Mar 06 12:00am GMT (GMT+00:00).
The crew realised that one among them had been sleeping and performing maintainance tasks which had kept her away from the rest of the crew for most of the previous days. On the grounds that this gave her the perfect opportunities to carry out sabotage and murder, they decided to remove her from suspicion...
Ange777 the Vanilla Townie has been lynched!

EDIT: To clarify, if you still want a 24-hour day please PM me again.
Towards the end of the day, Holyflare, WaveofShadow and Gumshoe met in a service corridor. "I don't think I trust TheChyz any more," said WaveofShadow. "How about we search his quarters for the gun which shot Vivax? Then we'd know for certain." replyed Holyflare. Gumshoe agreed, and so the three went to do so.
They tore apart TheChyz' room for a good half-hour. Their search was fruitless, until: "Well, look what we have here..." breathed Holyflare, holding out an antique revolver he had found at the bottom of a drawer. At that moment TheChyz walked in. "What are you doing in here... and what have you done to this place?" he asked in perplexity. "Shoot him!" cried Gumshoe. "End this nightmare, once and for all!" Holyflare brought up the gun, and took the shot. <BANG>

Endgame
Excerpt from personal log:
Dear Diary,
There are so many ways to say what must be said, but I think dear old Freddie said it best:
"We are the champions, my friends And we'll keep on fighting till the end..."
TheChyz the Vanilla Townie has been lynched! WaveofShadow the Vanilla Townie has been shot! Gumshoe the Veteran has been endgamed! Holyflare the Mafia Goon is the sole survivor!
Mafia wins!
Yes, I asked Holyflare to confirm his shot before the day ended. I wanted to wrap this up neatly.
Obs QT Mafia can post their QT if they so wish. It's quite the read

I would appreciate any feedback on the setup and moderation of this game.
Setup
The idea behind the setup was to see what happens in a game where town has no way to protect influential townies/power roles; hence no doctor or jailkeeper. I thought this would have a large effect on the game, so the town roles were overall quite powerful besides that.
The setup might have been slightly better balanced with a 1-shot Detective rather than a Parity Detective, but it's an unfortunate fact that one must think "If a townie or two gets modkilled, is this setup still playable?". I think a 12p game with these roles would still be quite balanced... 11p would be stretching it. Having both a 1-shot Detective and a 1-shot Vigilante would front-load the power of town a lot, meaning that scum would either be fine after night 1 and likely win or get completely wrecked, and I don't much like that as an idea. In the end, the Parity Detective provided less utility than a 1-shot Detective would have done, so there's that too.
In the end, I think this game was won and lost by behavioural analysis, not role analysis - and that's the way I prefer in a normal mini.
When I was originally thinking about this game I was considering including masons; however, after the clusterf*** in LXIV I thought better of it, and decided I'd just put these rules in as a precedent.

Way to just completly ignore that and do your usual bullshit like noone gives a crap.
No. I never should've been modkilled. I specifically tried to "be good." And I was. Keep on whining because I caught your ass because you're so fucking awful at mafia (and by that I mean as any alignment).
Geript, your original case on Toad was awful and that's why nobody listened to you. Sometimes, by chance, awful cases happen to be on mafia. You got lucky.
