I'm so so so so excited for this game. Playerlist looks sick and I'd be happy to be coached by any of them tbh. Plus it's going to be super fun to speculate about people picking up things from their coaches. I have a feeling the second game is going to have sick sick mindgames like scum players trying to copy things from town players from the first game to act like they are being coached by them. ^_^

2 questions:

Has a game like this ever been played?
Is the follow-up shadow game going to be played in this thread or a different thread?

This is totally new. The closest we've had we're the early student games I think.
I doubt it would be in this thread.
TL Mafia. Love it. Play it. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/index.php?show_part=31 I find Kennigit really attractive. If anyone has a picture of him please feel free to PM it to me.

I don't know if I've played to much to shadow, but I think it'd be good for me. So....

Oh wow game starts Jan 20th?
/shadow if people will have me then. Same boat as fubadooba though---if I'm too 'experienced' give the spot to someone else.

if I had to describe his playstyle, it'd be a coked up rabbit with the attention of a goldfish injecting caffeine into himself directly through an IV drip. it's like a reel of random animated shorts where things just blow up randomly

How sick would it be if there was a PYP draft mechanic for shadows to pick coaches?

The player list is sick and I would really like to shadow one of them... but I have absolutely no interest in playing the second game. Sigh...

This would be a bad idea because the shadows get the alignments of the players they shadowed. If someone knew who your favourite player was and he flipped scum in this game and you were first on the list, you'd be in some serious trouble

Well, first I don't want to copy the style of the person I am shadowing. My goal is not to play like this person but to understand how HE plays to get a different view on the game and maybe I want to implement a thing or 2. I guess that's ok and I could still play in the second game but then my second issue becomes relevant.
I am of the opinion that the best way to learn is to compete with the best possible players (at least for me that has always been the case regardless of the subject). I don't want to be disrespectful to the other shadows but this is the exact reason why I didn't play more than one Newbie game. It is vastly different to play a Newbie compared to a real game especially a big one and you learn that the hard way - doesn't matter if you played Newbies or not.
Maybe that's an egoistic mindset but I don't think I would enjoy playing this game even though I am probably no better player than any other shadow.

I agree with your sentiment that the best way to improve is to get smashed by better players and adjust your play upwards. However, I've never had the opportunity to really discuss game play with the better players on this forum, and while I've read a lot of these players, it's completely different to get their insight as they are playing.

Seeing as I've taken a couple 1-year breaks in between games, and I can only remember a couple games long past in which I was actually happy with my play, I really hope I get the opportunity to have one of these guys learn me some mafia.

JAT, I don't think there's a "best way" to learn. Everyone has different personality traits. Perhaps for you, it works best to drop yourself into the deep. Others might find playing against people of their own level more motivating, and get the confidence from it that they need to analyze the big fish too. Furthermore, the idea isn't that you copy the player's entire gameplan, but to learn from it and apply a few things you have learned in the following game. Either way, it's an experiment. If it works out, great. If not, we'll still have had a great invitational and "novice" game, and we can use the lessons we learned for a sequel.

See, that's why I would like to shadow one of those guys. Playing the following game is a whole different story.

Obviously people are different. That's why I said "at least for me". I didn't critisize anyone of a different opinion and I didn't say this project isn't a good idea but the things I said are the reasons why I personally won't join this although I would like to shadow a good player. WoS asked why and I answered.

Oh don't worry, I didn't take any offense. Just saw a chance to explain exactly what this is meant for.
