It's the low hanging fruit strategy. They're going after the less popular sports with weaker fields that give out a lot of medals. Sure, China is historically strong in certain more popular sports and they're trying to be competitive in many others. However, it is in the less popular ones where they are really cleaning up.
Also, some of the lower weight classes in certain sports are virtually extinct in first world countries. Seriously, "strategy"? Do you actually think that the Chinese government have any more of a "strategy" in the Olympics than any western country? Do you honestly think that the Chinese government is consciously putting in extra resources to create athletes for "less popular sports" in a petty attempt to gain worldwide acknowledgement? Do you believe so much into propaganda that you need to revert to conspiracy theories in order to rationalize the fact that China is currently neck-and-neck with the United States? Do you so buy into the idea that NK is a backassward and inferior country that the fact that they won one medal makes you dismiss a whole weightclass? The athletes won because they trained harder and wanted it more. The fact that you dismiss their personal triumphs as "strategy" by NK/China to gain medals is disgusting. Not only is that insulting to the NK/Chinese athletes, it is insulting to every single other athlete in their event that you would dismiss their event as "less popular sports with weaker fields." Pray tell me, what exactly constitues as a "less popular sport with weaker fields"? Because every event I see has cutthroat competition worthy of winning with plenty of stories. Just because NBC decided to mainly give focus to the American competitors (arguably understandable) doesn't mean that there was no story behind Chinese/NK medal wins. The Chinese/NK athletes aren't faceless robots churned out by the government to steal your medals from the Olympics, they are human too. I'm sorry if you honestly didn't mean "strategy" as in actual strategy, but your post comes off as ignorantly nationalistic. Too many people see China and NK as the "enemy" during the Olympics and it is kind of ridiculous. Just watch some good athletes and have fun, there is no need to politicize everything . I think you have no idea how much China hates the western world on a political level. Some historical scars are still burning very hard and Beijing 2008 was the best proof that they have something to prove to themselves. Furthermore top Chinese Athletes are paid by the state (somewhat normal since it's a communist country) and it's way easier to be good at non-professional sports if you don't have to worry about getting money for your children. They also bought a lot a foreign trainers for the 2008 Olympics. In Canoe Slalom, some of them are french (and apparently well paid). Lastly the only mention of Chinese Gymnastics training programs should be enough to convince you that China has a nationel sport strategy.
However every nation has, Europa counts more on high school education and national training center, the USA on their Universities ...

Well, there are two sports where medals are pumped out very liberally: Swimming and athletics. Both have a lot of events that require the same types of skills.
Edit: And do not assume I do not love those sports. I have been a competitive swimmer and I do follow athletics.

Wednesdays should be GB first gold, should be more than one too. Mens and Womens time trial should be Wiggens & Hoy in the men with the women should be getting 1 gold in their time trials too. Then you have rowing finals which we should pick up 1/2 golds. Then in the evening there is the breast stroke finals which we could get a gold in. Exciting times xD

Related to the state program vs personal interest issue:
There was an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 that I watched two years ago, in which the main characters asks his father why he didn't encourage him to be on the national skating team when he was younger.
His father tells him the coach asked him to ask himself, do we want to have a superstar, or do we want to have a son?
Much respect for how hard all aspiring olympic athletes work and how they work harder than we can even imagine, but it does bother me when they're pushed into it before they are responsible enough to make those kind of life choices (aka voting age). Women's gymnastics is probably the worst, they start when they're like 5 and are retired by the time they go to college. Then if they don't want to stay in some coaching/promotional role, they have to start completely from scratch.
It's probably even worse if you grow up in some national training program rather than having a relatively normal childhood.

Yeah totally agree, i mean that one US Gymnast, the one who did the perfect vault jump. Wow she had a stone face! Looked a proper mean bitch (in the nicest way). They all just look like they do on those American films (Bring It On type films) it's crazy.

it's also possible in a lot of other sports such as rowing (eight, quad skull, quad, double skull, single, single skull), gymnastics (parallel bar, horizontal bar, pummel horse, individual, rings, vault, etc). You will basically never see this in rowing however because the amount of stamina required to be competitive in all those events is astronomical. In fact 4/5 of the athletes with the highest medal count of all time are gymnasts. Only phelps came from swimming. One can theorize it is more plausible in gymnastics because it is not a test of endurance. It's more of a test of skill and technique. So for phelps to achieve 8 golds in a single olympic is one hell of an accomplishment from and a real testament to his level of his endurance, especially considering most swimmers only specialize in one or two types of strokes. What you should really be comparing is your performance relative to other athletes from your sport.

Chinese Pair and South Koreans in Badminton Fix
Womens pairs from China and South Korea are being probed by Olympic committee after trying to throw games in an attempt to maniuplate the draw.
A statement from the BWF confirmed that all four pairs would face charges of "not using one's best efforts to win a match" and "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport".
"It was a disgrace. We had four pairs on court trying to lose - very un-Olympic spirit. I'm furious. It is very embarrassing for our sport." - Gail Emms former UK Badminton champion
"China control everything. I don't know who controlled the match to lose but if it is China again, they did it so many times last year, they didn't play against each other in 20 matches. They do what they want." - Bulgaria's Petya Nedelcheva

Anyone care to summarize what happened? I don't want to go through 400 posts >.< Was there anything specific that triggered all the posts or was it just general discussion?

Heh, reminds me of that silly Stephano vs Brat_OK series.
While they were obviously in the wrong, I feel that it's also a problem with the format. Athletes shouldn't be put into that position where they can influence the draw.

Just fix the format, they never normally do group play in badminton, I have no idea why they did it this year.

China struggled on the vault going for max points. USA kinda owned everything, US got maximun points on vault and floor. Romania did well on floor. China seem to do average on everything and never really excelled anywhere which was suprising. Russia did well on everything but the floor where russian girl dominated for 1minute 20 then the last jump completely failed on it and landed on her face basically. Lots of crying going on, all the Russians crying there eyes out all the Chinese and the Americans were hysterical xD
In the end was USA >>>> Russia >> Romania > China
