There's a reason why Korea has been using it for years. Having all the teams go through a single bracket should make it easier to identify the absolute strongest team at that moment, on top of being super entertaining for the fans. Seeing a team run through the qualifiers like NJWS did is a hell of a lot more exciting than the old style tournament.

Still don't know about Bo1s in the LCS though. Still way too volatile, but meh.

Total number of matches during a split, playoffs excluded, is 90 down from 112, which sounds far less drastic. I think at the end of the day, Riot needed to make the league a bit more digestible. Last season, the summer split kind of dragged on during the middle, and now with more teams, there's could have been a problem with people being even less interested.

As an overall system change I think it's a nice first stab at making both splits matter while still giving a great run-up to Worlds with the gauntlet.

This way you have circulation allowing new teams to use the resources to get better, but don't screw teams who just got into LCS and are potentially improving. Or get rid of relegation matches and just hold a double-elimination promotion tournament with 5 best teams from CS and 3 dropped out of LCS. With that you would shift even more importance to summer from spring as it already has though.

Knowing Riot, they did. They almost always share schedules and format changes with the owners before going public.
