Hi TL,
We had 49 forum users sign up for our first tournament. Initially, I had hoped we’d have enough people for 16 teams and we’d set up a double elimination bracket to get our top 4 teams for Semis/Finals. However, we have enough people for 9 teams, so our brackets needed some adjustments.

With nine teams, the admins have decided to do Round Robin format for the qualifiers. Each pool will have three teams, who play take turns and play the other two teams. The top placing team (2-0 in Round Robins) for each pool will make it to the Semi-Finals. The Wild Card spot for the remaining Semi-Final spot will be played out by the three remaining second place teams from each pools (teams with scores of 1-1). The team finishing with 2-0 in the Wild Card will secure the last spot into the Semi-Finals.
Pool stage Round Robin as well as Wild Card qualifier will be a Bo1. All ties, pool stage ties (A>B, B>C, C>A: where all teams end with 1-1) as well as Wild Card Qualifer ties, are to be replayed again.
Semis and Finals will be a Bo3, standard bracket. Single Elimination.
One point that I’m leaving to everyone is the days that we’ll play these games. I’m opening this week as a chance for teams to assemble and get some practice in. I’m looking to the weekend of Friday, Nov. 18th as the weekend we play our matches. I understand that this is the same weekend as MLG Providence. However, if we delay it yet another week, that will be Thanksgiving weekend for the Americans and it’ll be even harder to get players online then.

However, test runs are needed to ensure the real thing goes smoothly. Our very first tournament will be held on Dominion. The mode is still relatively novel and the games themselves don't last for more than 30 minutes each. Details- Tournament will be held on NA server - The date(s) of the tournament is still TBD, will depend on the # of teams as well as staff availability - Each team will have 3 bans each (global tournament bans will be left at the admin's discretion pending any unforeseen patch problems) - Bans will be made in a 1-1-1-1-1-1 format - Team with First Ban will have First Pick - Picks will be made in a 1-2-2-2-2-1 format - Registration is either Solo Entry or Duo Entry - Prize will be first place only, 5 Riot Nasus cards (courtesy of WaxAngel) - Winning team per round must submit a replay as well as a screenshot. One replay and screenshot only per team. (This means at least one person per team should be designated to collected end game details) Entry Details (<= this is the signup link) To preface the entry details, I want to reiterate that this tournament is a test run and technically for fun. The prizes were retained after IPL and I wanted a productive way to give out the Riot skins. In a sense, I would like the skins to stay "within the family" and to elevate subforum camaraderie. - Registrations will be either Solo Entry or Duo Entry (sign up link is above) - Solo Entry must a TeamLiquid user - If a Duo Entry, at least one member must be a bona fide TeamLiquid member (Account registered in past 2 months [Aug. '11] and with a minimum of 50 posts) -- Second member can be a non-TL member (this is so TeamLiquid lurkers aren't left out. This also means you can pull in a "high elo player" from your friend list if you so desire) --- Duo Entries can be TL/TL pair or TL/non-TL pair. I am looking for Tournament Admins for the long run, so for this Dominion fun tournament as well as the more srs bsns tournament for SR when Spec Mode is out.
This also goes without saying, if you apply for Tournament Admin, you obviously cannot enter any TeamLiquid LoL tournament.

We have all seen some quality (read: sick ass) front page news and tournament OP threads here on TeamLiquid.net. Without having to poach current SC/SC2 graphics talents, I'm looking for some skilled artists for our own subforum. Probably not as vital for this tournament but I would like the SR tournament to have a respectable looking banner. Your skills may be called upon for other tournament OP threads as well (e.g. future MLG, WCG, etc banner threads)
If you are interested in this position, PM NeoIllusions with a sample of your work.
Graphics artists are allowed to enter tournaments, if they so wish.

I'm not sure how many people this goes for, but when a thread is stickied, I actually pay much less attention to it than if it was just bumped and available at the sidebar or at the top of the normal threads in the subforum. You may want to consider unstickying it for more publicity

Doubt too many people will be interested in winning 1 skin for placing 1st place, especially for a hat tourney. You should email Riot and get their prize support and maybe try to copy Reddit for the next tournament coming up (5 TL members + 3 non-tl needed subs with some average Elo cap).
Also, "this also means you can pull in a "high elo player" from your friend list if you so desire" made me laugh. Neo #1 male e-whore.

This should be limited to TL members only IMO. That way, if you wanted to drag a high Elo or at least a capable duo queue partner to play with you, they have to formally enter the TL community.
It sounds like a super fun tournament though.Great initiative Neo.

Does not inflate. You two will be on the same team but elo is still averaged as 5.

I don't mind being paired up with random people but I'd like to practice with them a little bit before the tourney. It seems like the teams are going to be made a half hour before the tourney starts, which would make practicing impossible. Is there a way to get some practice in or am I just going to have to deal with it?

I'll give one, if not two weeks, for everyone to message their teammates, get acquainted, and get some practice in. Practice time will be taken into consideration. I don't expect teams to just wing it with 3-4 other random players.

What I have in mind is once the teams have a two day grace period after I announce the teams, I'll ask for "captains". Captains are responsible for seeking out the opposing captains and arrange a time to play the game. You do know there's a "Season 1" drop down menu on the top right? You change Season 2 (default) to Season 1. Last season you were 118-116, 1609 elo high, ended at 1558. So just enter 1600.

I was considering global bans to be due to bugs in the current patch. For example, Morde from ~8 patches ago and his retarded ghost. Situations where Riot fubar'd on coding and it impacted the game negatively.
Rammus on the other hand just has a silly strong kit for Dom. It's more of a balance issue than anything else. But I'm open for discussion. Convince me why Rammus should be banned but not Jax or Akali, for example.

jax and akali supposedly got 'fixed' with gunblade nerf as well as the various dominion changes, not to mention they're arguably not on the same tier of gay as rammus. i dont play dominion much, but i hate to see armordillos owning. at least akali is hot
i'm going on a different tangent with the global bans. im thinking global bans could be used as a way to diversify picks in dominion.

i agree that i doubt that anybody who's not fp will leave rammus unbanned, his unmatched mobility pre 6 just makes gaining capture leads etc. so much easier

Rammus is going to be banned in 100% of the games, unless captains suddenly derp super hard. There's nothing he doesn't excel at in this mode - great 1v1, great capturing (mobility), great defending (2v1 no problem).
Most importantly, he forces the whole other team to build a tenacity item / QSS or die to his taunt, and I don't think there's any other champ right now that forces so much gold wasted to counter him exclusively. You can exhaust Jax / Akali and focus them...but there's really not much you can do vs armordillo.
He's just a whole league or two above any other champs right now, imo.

There's no 'baiting' the ban when a champ is so unanimously valued as the #1 champ though. You know this from playing so much TT. There was no such thing as 'baiting' a Mundo ban, it was more like 'if they don't ban him we win.' That's not some strategical gaming between team captains it's just a clear advantage to being first pick; nothing is gained in the ban/pick phase by having such obvious distinctions.
If there were more champs at Rammus's level it'd be another thing because the 2nd/3rd pick would have enough weight to make ban baiting backfire.

So you're actually just arguing that Rammus isn't THAT good(as in, not so good that he will be 100% banned every game).
I don't actually play dom much and when I do I don't think about it much so I won't get into that discussion, my post was made under the assumption that Rammus is just considered head and shoulders the best champ on the map, like Mundo used to be on TT.

I didn't say they are, but being able to pick BOTH of them because the enemy team picked 1 champ, it could be good. All I'm saying is global bans should only be on champions that need bug fixes or champs that were just released, like they do it in every other tourneys.

You play T.T, so you should know the distinction between tier mundo and tier singed and tier 3 back then.The only important point is, are there any Mundo/Singed tier champs? Is rammus on mundo tier?

My whole point is that you should never global ban a champ because it takes out strategy from the ban/pick phase.
There's a reason why there has never been a global ban on a champ just because they're strong in any serious tournament.

That's absolutely false as the pure statement you're making it out to be. If champ X is godlike and has a 100% winrate in competition, and it gets permabanned(or nerfed), the next champ doesn't just 'step up to the plate.' People then analyze the same criteria for that champ and those close to it in 'win share.' If after the hypothetical 100% win rate champ is gone, the next best champ is 51%, it clearly doesn't need to be always FP'd or FB'd because it's not that influential, and bans can now be used as spot bans for specific players, or strategy bans for champions that hinder your game plan(or the game plan you think you see the other team planning based on their bans).
That would be a 'strategical' ban environment. You see that in SR play because in recent tourneys there have been no absolute must ban champs(Kog got close at IEM NY). Bans became targeted at players and known preferences in team comp(go check out the huge variance in bans of NA vs NA games and the EU vs EU games, it's like they're playing different patches).

just a few points addressing various random points previously stated:
1. regarding precedence: there is no need for an unofficial inhouse tournament to be limited by precedence. this isn't a court of law and riot's decisions regarding competitive play are not the best.
2. regarding the value of 'strategizing picks and bans' / integrity of the drafting process: having to always ban rammus as second pick is unnecessarily restrictive to me. i don't see any other champ in dominion warranting the same kind of banning behaviour that rammus demands

But there hasn't been a Dominion competition so how would you know Rammus is super-godmode-brokentier-100%-winrate?

Rammus super fast capture every undefended point
Rammus super taunt, kill everyone 1v1 by taunting them under tower
Rammus super tank, every teamfight he wrecks with his 300 armor and mres
Rammus super low cooldowns (50sec ult) so it's perfect for dominion where he can keep using his skills in every fight while other champs may have their ult on cd
In theory it's op as hell, but IMO the strongest champs in dominion are Akali and Talon

Seen plenty of bad rammus where all they would do is try to capture your two back points. Just had to roam defend and stop him from capping.
Have not experienced any defensive ones yet.
There will be 6 bans, let the bans do the work.

Given that you get the next two best heros, of which Talon is one (and who conveniently crushes heimer), I'd be super cool with that. Rammus is also one of the best extract holders in the game.

Only reasons to autoban a hero is 1) released in the middle of a tournament round, 2) gamebreaking/altering bugs.

Its not able being 'overrated'. Its about having versatile champs that directly stomp the ones you decided were picks 2 and 3. You don't need to ban rammus, but shaco/heimer is a really, really poor counterpick. Vayne/Kass would be a much stronger set of choices.
AD sion is a complete joke. Get a QSS and he cannot close on you without his team to help.

Those are not the same as the calculations I have on hand. Nearly all teams should be around the 1600 Elo level as average.

I looked all the Elos up through the client, I guess it might be possible that people entered different Elos in the spreadsheet, but that's what I came up with. You could just doublecheck team 9 again if you want to, since the by far highest deviance occurs there.

Real nyx what happened to your exams? May or may not be able to play, depending on which timeslots are used. Also unichan team 8 has highest elo and their elo no inflated so neo plx put unichan boifrens brees and shake on our team.
Also real uni blocking tl access so contact me some other way.

With the amount of people who have dropped out we could do an 8-team double elimination tournament.
Or 2 pools of 4 and top two advance to a single elimination.

I was hoping this thread would be livelier but let's see if this can inject some motivation for people....
I have a spare invite for Dota2 and I will give it to one player on the teams playing in the finals. The 10 players playing in the finals will PM me 2 votes for the MVP - 1 for a player on their own team (excluding themselves) and 1 for a player on the opposing team. The person with the most votes will be declared the TL Dominion Tournament MVP and receive a Dota2 beta invite.
I hear that there are more and more waves of beta invites being sent out by Valve so this could be irrelevant by the end of the week. I think Neo should be ok with this and good luck to everyone playing!

Sorry guys. All the admins have been busy recently. I apologise for the problems we've had. We're hoping to learn from this so any future tournaments run will be much smoother.
Neo will have a full announcement soon. In the mean time, please make sure you have contacted everyone in your team and you all have a Captain for each team. Also, if you are not familiar with LoLReplay and with taking screenshots of the Game Summary Screen (the one showing items, gold earned, winner/loser, etc.) then please take the opportunity to get to know them. These will be compulsory for us to validate the results of any non-spectated matches.

@any of the tourney admins:
If you would like, I am willing to take this over and set a time and post brackets based on the signups in the OP. Teammates who aren't available can be replaced by anyone on your friend's list who either has less ELO or no more than 300 higher ELO of the unavailable player* (random idea, obviously open to suggestion), so every team should pretty much be able to fill out- if not, the other team gets a bye. Sure, not everyone will be able to make it, but that's strictly not-as-bad compared to the tournament not running at all, as a lot of people were looking forward to this.
*for people who know about my ELO hell shenanigans, just want to say I'm not trying to abuse this system, I signed up as 1700 for seedings
