This is a thread for discussing Blizzard's new HGC League, which just wrapped up qualifiers for EU and NA this week. All eight qualified teams from each region are guaranteed $50,000 per team in salaries for the first 6 months.

The schedule can be found here.

2017 HGC North American League teams for the first 6 months:
Overview by DBSmiley:

Tempo Storm
  • Players:
    • Fury
    • CauthonLuck
    • Cattlepillar
    • Jun
    • psalm

  • Roster changes since last fall:
    None.

  • Qualification -
    • Auto Qualified via Blizzcon

  • Premier Events:
    • NA Fall Regional #1 - 1st Place (10-6) as Murloc Geniuses
    • NA Fall Regional #2 - 1st place (10-7) as Murloc Geniuses
    • Blizzcon - 7th/8th place (1-4)
    • Gold Club World Championship - 7th/8th place (2-14)

  • Major Events:
    • Bloodlust: Did not participate
    • NA Nexus Games: 1st Place (12-3)* *-In the final series, Astral was credited a win because they advanced from winner's bracket. However, they only won 12 games, despite being credited with 13.

  • Formerly Astral Authority, which reemerged as Murloc Geniuses in the wake of NA's post-summer Rosterpocalypse 2016, and now is sponsored by Tempo Storm. It features players from previous iterations of Gale Force eSports, GOGnitive Gaming, and Panda Global to name a few. As Murloc Geniuses, they immediately changed the landscape of NA HotS by winning the first fall regional despite low expecations and lacking a sponsor. Murloc has since won every NA Major or Premier event they have participated in, with the Bloodlust community tournament being the lone exception. Their most recent play at the NA Nexus Games was particularly dominant, as they didn't drop a single set, and only losing 1 map to each of Level Up, Gale Force eSports, and Denial. Astral Authority dropped their roster and acquired Murloc Geniuses leading up to the NA Nexus Games.

B-Step
  • Players:
    • KingCaffeine
    • iDream
    • apm
    • k1Pro
    • McIntyre

  • Roster changes since last fall:
    • Prismaticism replaced by iDream (between Fall Regional #1 and #2)
    • Glaurun replaced by McIntyre (post Blizzcon)

  • Qualification - Auto Qualified via Blizzcon

  • Premier Events:
    • NA Fall Regional #1 - 5th/6th Place (2-5)
    • NA Fall Regional #2 - 2nd place (11-3) - including a 2-0 victory over Gale Force eSports in Blizzcon Qualifier tie breaker.
    • Blizzcon - 7th/8th place (4-6)
    • Gold Club World Championship - Not invited

  • Major Events:
    • Bloodlust: 5th/6th place (2-2*) (following loss to Gale Force, Denial withdrew and forfeit despite still being in the competition)
    • NA Nexus Games: 2nd Place (10-8)

  • Formerly Denial Esports. After Cloud 9 disbanded following a disappointing summer season, KingCaffeine and k1pro founded Crescendo alongside apm (Team Name Change), Prismaticism (Team Name Change), and Glaurung (Brain Power). This team quickly generated substanial hype, and immediately qualified for the first NA Fall Regional, beating then Murloc Geniuses and Vox Nihili in the first qualifier. Crescendo was picked up by the Denial eSports organization. Following disappointment at the first regional, Prismaticism was dropped in favor of former Cloud 9 teammate iDream. Following the change, Denial qualified for Blizzcon. At Blizzcon, Denial managed to get out of the first group phase, but ultimately went 0-4 in the second group phase. Upon returning home, it was announced that Glaurung would leave the team, and McIntyre was picked up to fill Denial's roster for the upcoming HGC season. Denial has immediately become one of the favorites in NA.

Gale Force eSports
  • Players:
    • MichaelUdall
    • akaface
    • khroen
    • Equinox
    • Fan

  • Roster changes since last fall:
    • Fury replace by Bkid (before Fall Regional #1)
    • Roflcopter replaced by Fan (before Fall Regional #2)
    • Bkid replaced by Equinox (after NA Nexus Games)

  • Qualification -
    • Qualifier #1 (9-0), including (2-0) over Chu8 my HotDoge. Qualified by beating Vox Nihili (3-0)

  • Premier Events:
    • NA Fall Regional #1 - 2nd Place (9-7)
    • NA Fall Regional #2 - 5th/6th Place (2-6) - including 0-2 loss to Denial eSports in Blizzcon Tiebreaker round.
    • Blizzcon - Not invited
    • Gold Club World Championship - Not invited

  • Major Events:
    • Bloodlust: 2nd Place (7-4)
    • NA Nexus Games: 4th Place (5-7) *Vox Nihili was forced to withdraw and so did not play Gale Force.

  • Fall was a tumultuous season for Gale Force. After winning the second summer regional, Gale Force had high expectations heading into the fall. A strong showing at the first fall regional set GFE up for success, but the team failed to find synergy. After Roflcopter retired, the team struggled at the second fall regional. Despite getting a second chance thanks to a tournament win by Murloc Geniuses, Gale Force failed to qualify for Blizzcon, losing the tiebreaker to Denial eSports 0-2. Gale Force impressed in the first HGC qualifier, as they didn't drop a single map. Gale Force's roster presents unique challenges to draft against, as it really is four flexes and an akaface. During the qualifier, we saw khroen, the presumed "carry", on Muradin, and Equinox, the presumed "tank", on Tracer in one game. This flexibility could be the X factor GFE needs to get back to the top of NA, and it will be worth keeping an eye on this season.

Team Naventic
  • Players:
    • Zuna
    • Kenma
    • bigempct
    • Tomster
    • bkid

  • Roster changes since last fall:
    • McIntyre replaced by Tomster (before Fall Regional #1)
    • Fan replaced by Jason (between Fall Regional #1 and #2)
    • Jason replaced by bkid (after NA Nexus Games)

  • Qualification
    • Qualifier #1 (9-1), including (2-0) over Grandmaster Jackets, qualified by beating No Tomorrow (3-1).

  • Premier Events:
    • NA Fall Regional #1 - 3rd/4th Place (6-3)
    • NA Fall Regional #2 - 3rd/4th Place (6-3) - including 0-2 loss to Denial eSports in Blizzcon Tiebreaker round.
    • Blizzcon - Not invited
    • Gold Club World Championship - Not invited

  • Major Events:
Bloodlust: 1st Place (8-2) - Credited 9 wins because winner's bracket champion was given 1 game advantage in final set.
NA Nexus Games: 7th/8th Place (0-2) - dropped out due to Zuna being unable to play at TwitchCon after starting 0-2 against Imported Support

  • Naventic has been among the more consistent teams in NA over the last year, though given the instability of NA this may not be a particularly high bar. That said, Naventic is known for having well managed team fights, and have very large hero pools. While their 3rd/4th place at both Fall Regionals may seem underwhelming, you have to note they went 4-0 in groups both times and lost both semifinals in very close game 5s. Naventic will alwyas have an air of controversy about them, and memes like Zuna feed and Lagf likely aren't going anywhere. But you know what else isn't going anywhere? Naventic. They will almost certainly be in the conversation for top team in NA as the season progresses. It's up to them to close out these best of 5 series. But they do not lack for talent.

No Tomorrow
  • Players:
    • TalkingTrees
    • Casanova
    • erho
    • Jason
    • TigerJK

  • Roster Changes since last fall:
McIntyre was replaced by erho before 1st Qualifer

  • Qualification -
    • Qualifier #1 (9-3), including (2-0) over Dumpster Tier SuperStars. Lost (1-3) to Naventic in the finals.
    • Qualifer #2 (9-1), beating Dumpster Tier (3-1) in the finals to qualify.

  • Initially a planned reformation of Barrel Boys, No Tomorrow changed names after former Barrel Boy McIntyre was picked up by Denial eSports. Despite being a new team, No Tomorrow features veterans of the NA Scene: TalkingTrees (Gust or Bust), TigerJK (Team Name Change/Tempo Storm), erho (Naventic, Tempo Storm) and Jason (Panda Global, Dumpster Tier Superstars, Naventic). This team went a comined 5-1 over Dumpster Tier Superstars, and managed to take a map of Naventic. No Tomorrow has experience and clearly believes they are a top 4 calibur NA Team. The competition heading into the season will get much tougher than the qualifier, but taking a map off Naventic is certainly a show of promise. It will be up to No Tomorrow to realize their goals heading into the season.

Team Freedom
  • Players:
    • Nazmas
    • insomnia
    • zugrug
    • daneski
    • KilluZiion

  • Roster changes since last fall:
None, as this is a new team for HGC 2017

  • Qualification -
    • Qualifier #1 (6-2), lost (0-2) to Naventic
    • Qualifer #2 (9-1), beating Vox Nihili (3-1) in the finals to qualify.

  • KilluZiion and insomnia played together on the short-lived team Peter Dinklage, which nearly qualified for the first NA Fall regional before one of their players (Goku) was signed by Team Name Change (who eventually qualified). This was particularly controversial at the time since the signing of Goku was after the registration deadline for the second qualifier, meaning both TNC and Peter Dinklage how to sit out qualifier #2. ZugRug previously played for Team Nom, and made it to the LAN at the Spring Regional in Los Angeles. Add in daneski (a former teammate of ZugRug on RaccAttack) and Nazmas, a new player to the pro scene, and you have a surprising team that upset both Gust or Bust and Vox Nihili en route to qualification. Of the first 6 teams to qualify, this team is the least known, and that wildcard status makes them a difficult match-up to predict. It will be interesting to see how they develop under the brightest of spotlights.

Superstars
  • Players:
    • Srey
    • Faye
    • iakona
    • Hosty
    • Goku

  • Roster changes since last fall:
    • McIntyre and Jason replaced by kladeous and prismaticism (in between Fall Regionals 1 and 2)
    • kladeous replaced by Goku (after Fall Regional #2, before Bloodlust)
    • Prismaticism replaced by Hosty (after HGC Qualifier #2)

  • Qualification -
    • Qual #1 Result (6-2): lost 0-2 in lower bracket semifinals to No Tomorrow.
    • Qual #2 Result (9-3): lost 1-3 in lower bracket finals to No Tomorrow.
    • Qual #3 Result (11-0): defeated Cata's Encore (3-0) in finals

  • Premier Events:
    • NA Fall Regional #1 - 7th/8th Place (2-4) as Gul'DansGame
    • NA Fall Regional #2 - 7th/8th Place (0-4)
    • Blizzcon - Not invited
    • Gold Club World Championship - Not invited

  • Major Events:
    • Bloodlust: 3rd Place (6-4)
    • NA Nexus Games: Not invited (lost to Level Up in qualification to finish outside the top 4)

  • Dumpster Tier Superstars aka Dumpster Tier Failures aka Dumpster Tier Rejects aka High Score aka High Power aka Gul'DansGame aka Veni, Vidi, Spongegar have gone by many names, but the core of the team rose out of the ashes of Brain Power. Srey, Faye, and Iakona have been together since formation, with somewhat of a rotating cast at the 4th and 5th positions. DTS performed very well in qualifiers for last two NA Regional events, but performed poorly at the LAN events. Despite a very strong performance at the Bloodlust community tournament, DTS failed to qualify for Nexus Games. These difficulties were compounded in qualification for HGC, where DTS twice played and lost to No Tomorrow. DTS did finally qualify in the third qualifier, but didn't drop a single game in their run.

Team 8
  • Players:
    • Prismaticism
    • glaurung
    • Justing
    • Buds
    • YoDa

  • Qualification: Qual #1 Result (6-3): lost 0-2 in upper bracket semifinals to Gale Force Qual #2 Result (6-2): lost 0-2 in lower bracket semifinals to Dumpster Tier Superstars Qual #3 Result (11-0): defeated Vox Nihili 3-0 in the finals

  • Formerly known as Chu8 my Hotdoge, this is a team started by Chu8. The biggest name on this team, however, is Glaurung. After international play, Glaurung left Denial eSports in a surprising turn of events. Joining these two are former TNC players Justing (tank) and Buds (support). Both players are certainly in the upper echelon of players in Hots, but are not top 4 team material given TNC's long history of failing to make it out of groups at LAN events. Yoda from Team Blaze rounds out the roster. chu8, with a different roster but same team name, almost qualified for the second NA regional, losing the semifinals to then Astral Authority. While chu8 didn't participate in any events since that loss, his team proved to be ready to go in the third qualifier, not dropping a single game en route to qualification. Most recently Chu8 dropped out of the team to focus on his streaming career and was replaced by Prismaticism.

So many joke-name teams. A sympthom of the scene atm? The remaining "pro" players scrambeling together without sponsors or organisation.

I still enjoy HotS as an e-sport, though, it was simply released 4 years too late, so Dota 2 and LoL were already too far ahead. As a true blizzard fanboy, I will never try those games though!

Nonono. That was not about release time. That was all about ridicilously bad launch of HotS. I don't know how but Blizzard decided to send me a beta at that time. Game was soooo bad. Talents, heroes, UI, gameplay... Everything. But the worst part was marketing. Most people couldn't find access to beta and they watch streams. There was a big hype. Then they realized the game sucks... They can't try themself and they don't enjoy watching. Hype was over almost immediately.

Blizz fixed some of them (UI is still horrible. Its a monstrosity!) but MobA player base doesn't give another chance. I really can understand that. Moba genre has so many different choices and no one wants to try a game twice.

Joke names also Blizz's fault. Due to low viewership, players cannot get decent sponsors. Blizz did nothing to promote HotS e-sports at launch. Now they are trying hard. Yet unfortunately... I don't believe HGC will continue at 2018.

HotS would be great university thesis about "How not to market a potentialy perfect idea?"

I think this is being handled really, really poorly. They announced months ago that the league would begin in January, and we're already in January and there is still no official announcement, just a comment on a reddit thread with a date. It blows my mind that they didn't give dates and details in mid December at the latest. It seems like they must be scrambling things together on their end if they haven't even been able to solidify a starting date until two weeks before.

I really hope this won't be indicative of the the production quality of the broadcasts or the clarity of announcements once things begin. Hoping for the best but confused about it so far.

From what I read, the players who qualified for HGC are traveling this week to meet with Blizzard and decide on map pools and work out details, possibly sign contracts.

Would be really nice if they have a big say in the proces I think.

Pretty standard Blizz.

Spring season is going to be a clusterfuck of Blizz trying to coordinate with ESL/DreamHack and OGN/Netease while simultaneously making shit up as they go. I'm not even surprised anymore. I'll be even more unsurprised if half of the games are on a community stream which you can only find on Reddit.

HGC Battlegrounds Revealed:

With HGC 2017 right around the corner, we’re excited to unveil the official competitive Battleground pool for the inaugural season of play. Until the Mid-Season Brawl, HGC and Open Division teams around the world will duke it out on these battlegrounds week in and week out. This list is subject to change after the first phase of play as new Battlegrounds are potentially rotated into the pool.
The Battleground pool is as follows:
  • Towers of Doom
  • Infernal Shrines
  • Battlefield of Eternity
  • Sky Temple
  • Tomb of the Spider Queen
  • Dragon Shire
  • Cursed Hollow
  • Braxis Holdout
  • Warhead Junction

For Battleground selection, one team will be elected ahead of time to go first in the banning process. This team will strike one Battleground from the pool, then the opposing team will strike one. The team that banned first will then get to select which Battleground of the remaining seven they would like to play, with other team getting the first pick in the draft. The loser of each game in a series will have the option between first pick in the draft, or the selection of the next Battleground.

Be sure to check back soon for more information regarding HGC Opening Weekend!

HGC news from Blizzard

Looking to the East, the final seven Korean HGC teams will be determined by January 22 after qualifiers have concluded, with the HGC Korea season kicking off February 3. All regular season games will take place live at the OGN studio and will be broadcast simultaneously in English on the official Heroes of the Storm Facebook and Twitch channels. All series will be best-of-five and will be streamed every weekend throughout the season on Fridays at 1 a.m. PST/10 a.m. CET.

The casters piloting the ship this year will be none other than Gillyweed and Dreadnaught for North America, Khaldor and Trikslyr for Europe, and the duo of Wolf and GClef for Korea. The Western casters have made the journey to Southern California, from where they’ll provide the play-by-play commentary and analysis that fans have come to know and love.

A special guest will be filling in for Khaldor for the first week while he packs his bags and heads west.

Eastern Skirmishes

In China, Netease, in partnership with Blizzard Entertainment, will host the HGC Gold League. The region is still finishing up the Gold Series and will join in the full HGC festivities around the time of the first Eastern Clash.

Korea and China will run their premier HGC leagues with eight teams apiece, and each region will have their own Crucible to test the merit of those up-and-coming rosters vying for a spot in the top tier.

All HGC games in North America, Europe, and Korea will be streamed on twitch.tv/BlizzHeroes and Facebook.com/HeroesEsports, which will be live Fridays through Sundays during the regular season, with one hour breaks between the European and North American slate of games, and four hours between games in North America and Korea.

After several weeks of regular season play, the first exhibition clashes will begin. The Western Clash will take place at IEM Katowice on March 3–5 where qualified teams from North America, Europe, Latin America, and Australia & New Zealand will compete for their share of a $100,000 prize pool. Meanwhile, on March 17, the first Eastern Clash will take place at the Gold Series Stadium in Shanghai, with another $100,000 on the line for teams from Korea, China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

We’re also excited to disclose preliminary details on the Mid-Season Brawl, the first major international tournament of the year. For MSB, Heroes esports will return to DreamHack Summer in Jönköping, Sweden on June 17 with $250,000 up for grabs to the twelve best HGC teams from around the globe.

This should be an exciting year for the Heroes of the Storm esports scene—when the HGC gets underway on January 20, there will be no shortage of competitive play to enjoy. Join us on January 17 for the relaunch of the official HGC site, updated to feature the comprehensive 2017 schedule as well as league standings, news, VODs, and more.

HGC Korea news: "All regular season games will take place live at the OGN studio and will be broadcast simultaneously in English"

Team renames:

Bstep = Denial
Superstars = Dumpster Tier Superstars
Synergy = Russian Circus
Expert = Two Bees Determined
Chu8 = Team 8
Tricked eSports = Damascuz bois
TempoStorm = Astral Authority = Murloc Geniouses
Grandmaster Jackets = Team Freedom

Trikslyr is no longer community manager:
Taking the casting position was a contracted position, not a position posted as a Blizzard employee. So, long story short, I'm no longer a Blizzard employee, thus no flair.

But, I get to cast and be a part of HGC and work side by side with Blizzard! Pretty exciting.

More details on Qualifier:

Online Qualifier will be single-elim Bo3's to narrow down to 24 teams. (in the past, a team usually only have to play one or two sets to advance).

Offline Qualifier will be six groups round robin. Winner of each group advance to HGC.

Both Online and Offline Qualifier brackets are determined by OGN, seeding based on standings in Fall Super League..

I wonder how they deal with roster changes and the 20k salary per season if a player leaves a team during the season?

Here is a discussion of the full rules for HCG.

Regarding my question on roster changes:
Teams can replace a player from their Active Roster under the following restrictions: North America League Teams may replace one (1) player in the following transfer period: May 29 – June 10, 2017.
The replacement player may be a member of the North America Open Division.

Here is the full rules PDF.

Always nice if you can answer your own questions

I'm getting really excited for the HCG. And nice to see a lot of activity on this subforum.
Is anything know yet on whether if the matches can be watched afterwards?

I expect they will be on the twitch stream replay tab, but can't say that with 100% confirmation. I'd be very surprised if that wasn't the case though.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of how that ended. It was kind of two mistakes back to back--- staying after the keep was down was a bit silly imo. (I think I support the core call from dig, though--- when you're down like that you have to take risks.)

Using gust to counter rag's fort trait is clever, though. I've pretty much stopped playing falstad completely at this point, so it's nice to see some good gusts.

chrizplosion didn't show very good situation awareness throughout the first two games either as a tank or as a shotcaller IMO. That last play was a good example: he's chasing for a kill while his team is completely exposed. Similarly earlier in the match they popped three high-impact ults right before a shrine fight, and tychus's level 20 was big red button. Their team was at a huge disadvantage in the fight, and predictably got routed.

Not that I could do better--- but I do wish pro teams could make better calls. Knowing whether you should be engaging or not engaging is stuff I want to be wowed by when I am watching. Not wondering why the diablo is charging in 4v5, or the stitches is trying to get a kill while his team is getting dismantled.

Watching the first game of B-step vs. GFE and.... uh, both teams look atrocious, so many mistakes, sloppy play, I don't even know where to start.

Also, KingCaff missed like 80% of his stuns on Muradin, and McIntyre missed like every Sulfuras Smash. At least both supports has solid game.

Agreed, neither team is looking super polished imo. GFE is particularly frustrating to watch... + Show Spoiler +
game one and three both way ahead, and super-throws. Game two they were way ahead also, and didn't royally screw up. Game four had a huge reversal too lol, except in the other direction. Game five was a nail biter though!

The thing that frustrates me the most is that these are the best teams NA has to offer... not particularly these two, but overall these are top NA teams and in some games they look like a complete joke. I am hoping that it is just the start of the year and that they are going to wake up but these matches were quite sad.

EU seems like miles ahead, and I haven't seen Korea in this year yet but it is Korea so...

When I saw Fnatic's picks I thought that the game was over, but Misfits definitely surprised me. I just love Nazeebo in this slow sustained meta where they often go for spell damage dealers with 2 Warriors, Superstition is just amazing. Also Leoric and Dehaka with their level 20 upgrades helped a lot too and Nurok played out of his mind with Zeratul.

Holy shit what a game 5... compared to this, all NA teams and their level of play looks like something between platinum and diamond.

Still, great series to watch.

EU games were great, and Naventic vs. GFE is decent so far.

Gillyweed and Dreadnaught are absolutely hilarious though... Dreadnaught's tips on how to have the best team: same color heroes and same mounts, "skinergy" lmao.

With so many games I would love some recommendations :D

I'll start with the series I watched:
EU:
Misfit vs Dignitas: nice serie, watch if you have time
Expert vs Tricked: not that good
Misfits vs Fnatic: great, recommend the whole series
We know nothing.

With so many games I would love some recommendations :D

- For me, the best series was Misfits vs Fanatic - great level of skill, up to korean standards, good matches, non-one-sided series.

- Misfit vs Dignitas comes in second, great level of skill, even though the series as a whole was one-sided.

- Naventic vs TempoStorm could be a good second for you, if you love nailbiters - but for me the level of play was lower - not "clownfiesta" level, but sadly NA seems to be alot lower in skill these days

All other games were either roflstomps or looked like some Diamond games I have every day...

PS:If you are solely looking for "strange" games or games with rarely used heroes, you can try Team 8 vs B step Game #2. Firstpick Artanis, Kahrazim, Zuljin in there

I really expected NA to do better. It feels like top NA could content with 6/7 EU now, which is atrocious.

How is it that this region can never compete with the rest... Work ethic?

That game 3 from Synergy was so disappointing... the whole game was pathetic without enough damage from either sides to do anything meaningful in team fights, resulting in 2 kills from Dignitas until level 20 and... that's it. Synergy got 2 keeps, but then Malf managed to walk into Mosh Pit in a team fight, something I see a lot in QM when I play it. I don't even know what was he doing there, he didn't have Silence, he went for Tranquility, why would you even rush that deep...

I am not a fan of the play 2 weeks on the old patch policy. I understand if they want to ban the new heroes for 2 weeks, but the whole patch being that far behind really disconnects the viewer from the meta the pros are playing on. Now that they are playing every single week, it just seems unnecessary. Are they really spending those two weeks learning the new patch or are they spending that time practicing on the old patch that is where they will compete? If they aren't really learning the new patch during that time I don't see the advantage of delaying it so long. It made sense when teams went weeks and months between tourneys, but not now.

BeGenius vs Playing Ducks series worth it for the sportsbilly plays made. Good bird main apparently(falstad and medivh)

Though Chrizplosion needs to work on playmaking I think. I'm pretty sure the only good mosh he managed to make the whole series is one handed to him by sportsbilly, and he made several which had zero (!!!) people in them.

Do you think that the playing on the old patch is partly tide to not being able to use new heroes for two weeks? For me that would make the most sense, but otherwise I agree with it being quite silly not playing on the latest patch details, would be good to see teams semi experiment with the changes on the fly.

That doesn't really make sense, if that's the case then there should be rule about that, it's not like that they could pick a new hero and get away with it... other tournaments that were played on live servers had that rule and teams simply weren't picking new heroes but still could get old that are reworked/buffed/changed.

I understand one week on the old patch after a new patch is released to catch any major bugs and give teams a full week to practice on the newest patch, but 2 weeks doesn't make much sense to me. They are going to do all their scrims and team practice on the old patch they are going to play HGC on, so they aren't using that extra week to learn the new patch much at all. It also makes hero league even less useful for pro players because it will rarely be the same patch they will be playing on in HCG. Not to mention the viewer confusion of having to figure out what patch they are playing on week to week.

GFE is drafting unusually badly today. The first two games have been a cringe-fest during draft, and the only reason they won the first game was because they severely outskilled Team Freedom.

This is kind of an interesting Format, almost feels like a season. Kind of nice for a change of pace, rather than everything always being on the line.

Though i suppose it on the line so to speak, since its just a round robin. Production is excellent too, with the transitions, and the skype interviews after.

I don't think NA is very good, but ...interestingly enough i'm not sure the gap between the teams is all that big in NA, feels like almost anyone can take out anyone. Besides perhaps the remnants of cloud 9.

what I really want to know is how they managed to let Tassadar, Valla and Illidan through and give them all to the same team on Warhead

absolute shit show by Miracle, 2 games lost straight up in draft. Hoping they can work the things out later on.

Now for the main event.

Yeah, he is pretty damn stupid... I am pissed because I was rooting for Expert and their cool/weird compositions and then Ragnaros reaches level 20, picks Heroic Difficulty and just destroys the team fight alone, it feels like old Kael'Thas after level 16...

That core call made no sense. Death timers were still short and they had to go through a keep.
They also had a Johanna to deal with who can slow, AoE stun and then multi-stun with her ult.
And that with a 100% zerg rush against you.

GFE vs. Team8.... Illidan, with BW as solo support, against ETC, Zeratul, LiMing and Ragnaros... yeah, not going to work.

What is wrong with the KR stream and vods? They look horrible, and FPS is wonky, makes them rather unwatchable. Which is too bad cause i'm sure they're the best teams.

I still prefer tourneys on (slightly) outdated patches over having even longer times between patches. (e.g. rather that way than receive the latest patch only after Katowice is done, just to ensure that the tourney plays on the latest patch >_<).

I just think they should follow the same plan as League of Legends with a one week delay on patches rather than two for competitive. In this case it would still have resulted in playing on an outdated patch for this weekend, but they could time it so that wasn't the case for their biggest tourneys in the future. With a two week delay they will almost never be playing the same patch the general public is playing.

Yeah, would be great if it'd be like the Katowice situation now - 1 week delay only, that'S what I imagine with "slightly outdated patches".
That way we as viewers still remember the pre-patch stuff/numbers - harder to remember the last patch when you already played it for 10+ days..

It's also a bit unfair for pros that they have to essentially only scrim as practice against teams who are willing to play the old patch... in other words other teams they will be competing against.

Yeah, both teams do know how to close a game when getting a minor advantage. Tahts a good sign, better than unnecessary throws even though it lacked abit of hype (no combacks for the trailing teams).

In game 3 the winner also slowly but surely lead his advantage to victory with concentrated play - evne though the games looked abit lopsided it was nice to watch for me - no clownfiestas XD

Haha sure Dignitas up 2-0 in the grand finals of WC against Fnatic- with two huge blowout wins so far- and they'll probably win it all 3-0

Not win trading (no reason to put on a tin foil hat ) but definitely a change in strategy that I also don't agree with.

It's interesting that Tychus got heavy nerfs in large part because of his high contest rate in HCG, but this was on the old patch and he wasn't a priority pick or ban or top 3 win rate.

There was a non-HGC pro tourney going on today, King of the Storm Tournament in EU. The tournament is casted by Kendric Swissh and Boogie.

And of course Eastern Clash for HGC starts in less than 2 hours.

I think I'm gonna throw a fit about this Wizened Duelist hype the casters keep trying to sell. It's very clear that L5 were so far ahead of Resurgence that they chose to go for a win-more talent and have some fun. If it were a pre-planned Worgen build, they wouldn't have picked the level 4 Cocktail talent too; it's clear it was a Cocktail build that was derailed because they felt really comfortable.

Was a thing of beauty! Decisive engagements and Tyrael+Zarya to help him out.

The other team should have tried to force the poke-game more, though. Their Muradin enjoyed to jump right into things yoo much.

The Maelstrom! ProAm Week! GFE, NVT, NT, and TF!

Gear Gaming has put together an event for the community, sort of a preview to The Crucible coming up on our very own HGC, by hosting a tournament where the top amateur teams in NA will have a chance to play against some of the current NA HGC teams.

Moving into the second week the four remaining amateur teams, LFM, Gear Gaming, 3D, and Thunder Awakens will be playing against the invited pro HGC teams, Gale Force eSports, Naventic, No Tomorrow, and Team Freedom. Each will be a bo3 match, with two being played on Tuesday the 28 and two being played on Thursday the 30th starting at 6 PM PST. Match ups will be announced tonight on our The Maelstrom pre-show at 5 PM PST.

The third and final week will see our semi-finals, third place match, and grand finals played out on April 5th and 6th.

Prize Pool
  • First place: $1000
  • Second Place: $300
  • Third place: $200

If you'd like to help with the prize pool, they have a Matcherino backer page. Enter code GGMS to back us for a dollar at no cost to you!

Full Schedule:
  • Tuesday 28th and the Thursday 30th airing at 6 PM PST: The ProAm quarter finals.
  • Wednesday the 5th at 6 PM PST: Semi-finals.
  • Thursday the 6th at 6 PM PST: Third place match and Grand Finals!

Preshows will air Mondays on the 20th, 27th, and the 3rd at 5 PM PST.

The entire event will be cast by CavalierGuest, and Grizz.

Stream

the match ups for this week will be

LFM vs No Tomorrow

Gear Gaming vs Gale Force eSports

3D vs SuperStarS

Thunder Awakens vs Team Freedom.

The amateurs will also have one additional advantage over the pro teams. For the first game they will have first pick AND map pick.

HGC China starts April 3rd-May 16th

It has similar format as other regions. But to avoid time clash, it will be always on Monday and Tuesday. The time is similar to HGC KR. No news on an official EN stream, since no EN casters are there.

Didn't watch closely due to family stuff, but those Team Expert drafts were kinky. Probius and Cho'Gall are not completely outlandish, but Gazlowe was about the last hero I expected to see today.

And nao, gief Team Liquid.

Is it just me or have there been a lot more Abathur picks recently? Not sure what makes him so popular right now.

Heroes of the shields, double supports, double tanks. Long long sustain fights let the slug get value + GM is top pick now.
BW also fell off back to tier 2/3 support and Dehaka is getting first banned a lot.

Exactly. I played a grand master level game a few days ago where the opposing team went double support on cursed hollow and we won easily without even having a warrior. We just went good old abathur azmodan cancer push comp, if you don't have good waveclear it's basically impossible to beat. I'm very glad double support has counters otherwise the game would be very boring

Falstad also fell off a bit, he still has good utility (gust/fly) but his damage isn't the best.

Liquid vs. Dignitas series spoilers/ short game summaries:

+ Show Spoiler +
Game 1 on Dragon Shire: Tons of aggressive play from Dignitas earns them an early lead that they keep for the entire game. 15 kills to 0 kills, and Dignitas goes up 1-0 in the best of five series.

Game 2 on Sky Temple: Even early game in levels and structures, until around level 12 where Liquid starts to get some key pick-offs, steals the boss at level 14, and carries the momentum for a few levels heading into the late game. Zagara keeps Dignitas in the game with some decent split-pushing, and then at level 20, a ballsy decision by Dignitas earns them a tiny opening to the core through the top lane but Liquid's defense is too strong. Tied series at 1-1.

Game 3 on Tomb of the Spider Queen: Dignitas gets the first set of webweavers, split-pushes for experience, and then right afterwards picks off a few Liquid players for an early lead. Dignitas forces another engagement at level 11 before Liquid hits 10 to increase the level lead further. 8 minutes into the game, a second set of webweavers from Dignitas puts them way ahead in the structure count (all 3 forts down vs. 0 down). 9:30 boss from Dignitas, denies the turn-in counterplay, Dignitas increases their lead further to over 3 levels ahead, third webweavers from Dignitas. A few minutes later, Liquid falls. Dignitas up 2-1.

Game 4 on Towers of Doom: Genji for Liquid! Around the 4-5 minute mark, Khaldor and Trikslyr have a pretty awesome one-liner back-and-forth thing going on while the two teams fought over the bottom altar. Dignitas hits level 10 a tiny bit earlier with a 32-28 lead, but the game is pretty much tied in both levels and core hp up through level 12, when Liquid uses their heroics prematurely and then a few seconds later lose three heroes. Then Liquid answers back with an altar steal, and ties up the experience race at level 16. Then Dignitas picks off another hero and nabs two altars, up 22 to 11 core hp. 18 minutes into the game and neither team has captured any forts. Then suddenly, Liquid wins a huge team fight and takes forts and takes boss. Tied game, both teams at level 20 with similar core hp, and then an absolutely nailbiter of a battle happens! Best fight of the series hands down. Liquid really close to winning the battle but then Dignitas somehow holds and beats Liquid down, which secured the game for Dignitas. This was the closest game of the series, by far. Dignitas beats Liquid 3-1! Dignitas and Fnatic move on!

Game 5: N/A.

TeamLiquid has been in a real slump since they changed sponsors from Misfits to TL. I'm bummed.

When they were Misfits, I wanted to cheer against them because I didn't like their playstyle. After TL adopted them, I began trying to support them, but they haven't had the level of success that makes being a fan enjoyable.

ROLL20 GOGOGOGO, they are making MVP.Black look like low tier NA, god damn.

REALLY goes to show that you cannot disrespect Roll 20 in draft, if they get their Medivh/Diablo you're almost surely fucked.

Im enjoying seeing Twitch chat shit its pants over NA > KR memes though.

18 - 0!

21 - 0!!

Game finishes out at 22 - 0 kills, no forts lost.

MVP.Black got flat out Shrek'd.

MVP.Black has absolutely no idea what they're doing in draft, focus on Diablo and let Varian through which is still REALLY good for Roll 20.

Glaurung with the straight up carry portals.

3 - 2. :O

And so ends Roll20's 25 - 0 kill streak.

Roll 20 is holding up remarkably well against an MVP.Black thats playing with a great deal more respect.

Following the MVP.B vs. R20 game is tough, lol. Tempo Storm looks alright, but I have a hard time building the hype for them vs. Red Canids since I know nothing about them.

Its nice that Red Canids dont look powerless though, and it also helps that hamTaro looks like Lucio IRL.

I wonder if theres going to be a prioritisation on keeping Genji out of KR team's hands from here on out. I think that might be a key to success for R20 in particular vs. Korea unless they hard ban their Medivh-Diablo/Varian shenanigans.

Soul Torturers making a fair show, I'm not sure they look quite matched up, but they look like they're definitely not just gonna roll over to the Best Team In The World.

L5 Stitches 2 good tho.

I take everything back, L5 looks ten times as strong with this Stitches play.

ST seem like really solid teamfighters, not enough to take L5 out, but I look forward to seeing more of them

Oh Dread, you gotta practice concision in your questioning, lol. RIP Translator, to quote twitch chat.

That being said, I like L5 way more than I like MVP.Black atm. KR looks good but not unstoppable and I look forward to seeing how things shake out.

Bo2 is a fairly standard format for large group round robins. The big distinction to look forward to is whether a team can close it out 2-0 instead of 1-1 because the winning team gets 3 points instead of 1 (and the loser gets 0 points instead of 1). It means that every game counts.

There will be plenty of time for super climactic matchups coming in the bracket. The playoffs are a double elimination bracket, all Bo5 with a Bo7 finals. The group stage feels like a constant grind, but I like that it's nothing but constant action where literally every game counts.

It also helps the schedule, since they don't need to plan around a possible six extra thirty minute games (plus draft and casterbox).

EDIT: Wow, that was a comeback.
I bear this sig to commemorate the loss of the team icon that commemorated Oversky's 2008-2009 Proleague Round 1 performance.

Game one of Roll20 vs. SPT was really exciting! Simba on SPT was the least valuable player by far though... died way too many times for no reason, didn't peel well, did nothing with MotBK...

18 kills to 1 kill that game, even though it seemed neck-and-neck for most of the game (with Roll20 slightly higher level and SPT slightly ahead in the structure race, until the end).

LOL I think SPT had an aneurysm in game two... no one realized their core was slowly dying? o.O A lot of silly mistakes and questionable decision making from the Chinese team in that series, while Roll20 looked solid overall.

As I understand it, getting people to defend the Core was exactly what Roll20 wanted. Then the rest of the team could have won the beacon and triggered a winning Zerg push. SPT tried to avoid that by winning the 5v4 so they could defend safely, but Roll20 managed to lose it slowly enough for Genji to kill the Core.

Maybe eStar overextended? A little bit more patience would have given them the win?

Dignitas up level 12 to level 9 over Tempo Storm on BoE, with a quick 9-minute win.

Yeah I think everything started to unravel for Dignitas after that top boss steal... I like both Dig and TS so I was happy they split games!

Yeah needed some level of competitiveness for NA for the game to really grow as an esport or eventually you risk losing some of your NA audience.

Well Roll20 split games with MVP.Black and wrecked SPT, while TS split with Dignitas, so even though NA might be volatile, they can still surprise viewers and win games against other regions, which is good

The gap between NA/EU and Korea has been closing, whether it's more from NA/EU being more consistent and solid than in the past or just from Korea making more errors than usual.

League play for Korea was a big advantage for them. NA and EU top teams used to qualify and then not play in any tourneys for several patches worth of meta changes, then come in to international tourneys trying to guess the correct meta based off scrims. Beyond that the Korean teams haven't looked nearly as mechanically superior as the past.

One reason SC got stale for me was that the only games that ever appeared to matter were KR games, made for really anticlimactic tournaments when you just knew which two or three players were just gonna win. I LOVE that HotS is at the point where I can follow any regions games and feel like I'm watching a unique and valid ecosystem of play, which makes the meeting of regions extra great because Roll20 COULD make big plays and take games, Dignitas could win this whole tournament, L5 could show up and win too, every region feels like it has the ability to be at least semi competitive and it makes the matches so much more fun to watch and the tournaments more thrilling to keep up with

They sure do have a chance, but I'm pleased to be able to say they definitely don't have it on lock. :D

EU gonna make them REALLY fight for it! NA might make them fight for it, depending on which Tempo we see and whether continued exposure to EU scrims hurt or help Tempo, and how much they help Roll20.

It's a cheese comp. You push down a lane with your stupid lane/PvE strength of Illidan/Valla/Tass/Auriel and the vikings can soak side lanes, do temples and snowball in the lategame. Dignitas played textbook vs it, but then they forgot to check the boss, lost a teamfight and then lost a teamfight a talent up...

I love that the MSB created more region-wide play on heroes like Medivh. It feels great to see regions learning from other regions.

Happy. But none of the teams behind Fanatic displayed even remotely stable performances this season. Especially confused by the silver league drafts of Tricked vs Dignitas.

I enjoyed the double speed/double damage one the most. Especially Jun luring people into a minefield with his Abathur.

Aba + Murky + TLV + Lucio + Auriel = OP.

JHow + Trikslyr + Airhorns = even more OP.

What was TL's score? Only saw one game and it seemed tight but a loss nonetheless...

Something is missing, some clutch moves to make it to the next step.

New talents? Commentating and analyzing the gameplay? Khaldor, Dreadnaught, Gillyweed, Grubby, Kaelaris, Trikslyr... none of them are new.

Really dumb ending to that series though... Freedom threw it hard at the end, losing by 3 seconds 2-3 to Team Liquid, when Freedom didn't have to do that at all. You don't base race vs. Illidan lol...

Well done by Liquid though

Man the winner's bracket felt really meh to watch, I hate when a game has a persont/team that just feels unstoppable, takes all the excitement out of the match...

Oh well, the Loser Bracket was awesome and I loved the slugfest matches that we had.

There is nothing interfering with the international Heroes scene quite like Chinese visas. I want to see another region's teams against an SPT that isn't using Simba.

Tsst is better than Sign

Sign carried Black for a few months so I gotta disagree with taht.

And their overall execution nowadays is much worse than it used to be, You can see it in their games, not nearly as sharp as the aggressive core of Rich/Sign with merryday's support allowing them to seemingly overextend constantly

You mean when Black was dominating everyone? He was hardly carrying, he was just playing Muradin and ETC and being able to hit stuns with near perfect accuracy. Towards the end of his time at Black he was a liability with his positioning and decision making.

But yeah, they aren't as sharp as they used to be, but obviously they are still adjusting. They looked a lot better week after week up to the Clash after the MSB; it was a surprise that L5 had improved so much themselves. Rich said afterwards that he felt a lot of responsibility as he felt like he and they hadn't practiced enough, and that he was committed to working even harder for Blizzcon. So they will only get better I think.

TS just wrecked SSG in games one and two, but game three was super close and went to SSG.

Edit: Game 4 was a roflstomp in favor of TS until TS threw hard by not taking the boss seriously and got teamwiped, temporarily evening out the game. TS still won in the end though: 3-1.

Super happy Dig took their series, and equally happy that Roll20 looked so good.

Tempo bums me out, its like, wow they're playing well, too bad they can't bring that to offline events vs other regions. :'(

Roll20 vs. Even In Death series so far, in a nutshell:

Roll20 gets insanely far ahead each game, then tries to figure out the one way that they could possibly throw the game, then they do exactly that and allow for a huge comeback for EID, and then the end of the games become unpredictable.

Roll20 look pretty strong actually. Obviously some ways off EU/KR without a doubt, but too strong for NA.

I can't believe how badly TL threw game 3 vs. Team Expert to get 3-0ed.

Iunno, at this point Im about Tempo level with TL. I expect almost nothing, but am not surprised when really good or really bad things happen.

But cant we talk about FULL ORC TEAM? ITS THE DREAM?

That's fair about TL, and EID's all orc team is pretty awesome but perhaps this wasn't the best map for them. They're getting bopped, down by 3 levels and down 3-13 in kills lol.

Edit: Yeahhhhh gg lol.

I cannot begin to fathom that they took this seriously with this team, but god damn do I LOVE TO SEE IT!

Im desperate for a proper Terran Warrior and a Protoss Healer for more Theme Teams.

Also, I wanna see me some Zerg Swarm, Kerri, Aba, Dehaka, Zag, and Stukov!

Yeah, I wonder which themed team would be the best overall. I feel like Protoss, Zerg, and Terran are close to competent. Zerg would be best imo.

I think the best contenders would be (if only needing one more hero) Protoss. Overwatch might be awesome too with Ana now. Terran is damn close to greatness with a really solid solo warrior though.

I also think Team Angel would be insane, but that'd require, what, two more angels? Malth, Tyrael, and Auriel are all consistently pretty great.

Honestly, if they released like 6 more heroes it'd be awesome to have a tournament where everyone gets a Theme Team by drawing lots or something or drafting beforehand.

Warcraft Undead is also probably close to being really good. Stitches/Arthas/Kel/Sylv/healer could be legit.

Tempo Storm just flat out bullied GFE in that series. There wasn't a single moment were GFE were ahead in any of the games.

The Mighty vs Tempest series is definitely worth the watch for anyone that missed it.

Or it's because it would be a joke to play a new hero at Blizzcon while they wait 2 weeks before rotating a new patch to season league matches.

They don't wait two weeks to rotate new patches in during league play, it's one week (more like one and a half since it's the 2nd weekend after a new patch when it goes live for pro play). They do currently delay new heroes an additional week for HGC league play though.

I support new heroes going live when their patch is being rotated in for pro play, but I understand not making that change for the first time for worlds.

I'm quite impressed by Win's play in the South Korean Crucible (although sad for Rrr, OhDuck and Kong made some terrible plays, and the drafts were pretty puzzling too). TrollKim, the ranged damage player on Win showed some very stellar Greymane play. I think it's the amount of trust that he shows in his teammates, really reminiscent of XingC and dami.

This was an entertaining game between BTG and Team Freedom. One team initiated a fight 19 to 20 and won the game off of that, ending with a nail-biter core push.

I really hope Fnatic have some hidden drafts left for the later stages of the tournament. 1 shotting everything with 3 globals won't cut it versus top teams.

Series play: an NA guide.

1. Pick a solid comp in game 1. Play well, win.
2. Pick a solid comp in game 2. Play well, narrowly lose.
3. Ensure you have last pick. Let the other team draft something that can hardcounter one specific thing. Pick that thing. Lose badly.
4. Feel proud that you placed top 8.

Very well played by MVPB. In the first game they almost won with a "troll" comp and I sort of wrote FNC off at that point.

Second game must've been quite a blow to FNCs morale.

Yeah, that was brutal. It looked like there was some botched coordination in teamfights with a lot of Rich jumping in to his death a lot. KSV played the macro game beautifully, but Tempest was definitely the better overall team today.

The series between GLuck and Feliz also showed that teamfighting is important, I think. It's ironic that teamfighting is the factor differentiating these teams after the big battleground changes. You would think that one team would just dominate the other in terms of rotations and snowball the game, but that hasn't really happened yet.

Almost reported instead of quoting, but you'd have deserved that as well :p

You hate the team, that - on an international stage - has given us the most epic comebacks and the best series ever?

I might be prejudiced and I get to watch only a tiny fraction of the Korean HGC games, but every time after a meta shift, seeing their ideas - and their execution - revolutionize the game is so much fun. I hated the across the board support nerfs as a player, and was resonably okay with double support as a viewer as well, but especially the Sky Temple game was top notch entertainment.

This series between Zealots and Methods is the most hilarious I've watched in a bit. Especially game 3 I actually burst into uncontrollable laughter.

Ashamed to admit that I've been enjoying these troll drafts past 2 days. Fun to see how pros play the lower tier heroes.

Mid Season Brawl patch info:

Diablo Lightning Breath has a bug that causes it to count as part of Diablo's hit box, so anything targeted under lightning breath hits diablo instead. It was initially going to be banned from Mid Season Brawl because they weren't sure they would be able to fix it, but they just changed their mind after feed back and after finding a fix in time.

Honestly, this is kinda painful to watch: SOOOOOOO MUCH DOWNTIME!! Seriously?

I can't be the only one who just wants to see some games.
I don't want to see 3 year old Sonya spotlights
I don't wanna listen to the casters and hosts explain the same stuff over and over again

Glad to see Tempest playing well. Their brilliant control of team fights and the aggression just remind me of their championship form.

likewise for Gen.G vs Fnatic. In fact all the matches today were 2-0, though a few of them were at least close games.

Wolf has a very limited knowledge of the game and it shows. I wouldn't listen too much into what he says.
