For 2 reasons
1 - You'll miss having a kitten when you cat grows up 2 - You'll form a supertight bond with ure cat that will last a lifetime
Good advice

My tip is to only adopt a kitten if you have a lot of time to spend with him. It doesn't have to be you the one who stays with him, but a human that gives him warmth and affection.
Why? If a cat grows by himself, or with little human contact, then when he grows up he will be a loner, and avoid humans.
If you are unnable to have someone take care of the kitten, then adopt a grown cat that has been taken care of by a family or something like that. He'll probably take a few weeks to get used to the new house and its members, but then he'll be all friendly and purring (??) against your lap

Dont buy a cat!!!! its a crime!! are tons of orphan cats that need a home!! the cats are not like dogs, they dont have so many differences between races, the better choice its a cute, nice street cat survivor!!!!

Hahahaha!
Can't help you with cat breeds, but where I stay, the shelters have lots more choice than the pet shops, so you might be better off just going to a shelter and matching it up with a photo.
I also need to add a mandatory brag about my cat. It's so smart, it can do what my wife can't.

What my cat looks like =D
Well, less pointy ears.
I generally find cats like this to be calmer btw, the Garfield type cats are actually pretty active :S

it's a shorthair (I guess an American short-hair, from what others are saying...im not an expert on cat breeds) but the pattern on the coat is a mackerel tabby, which is just a coloration/coat pattern that a lot of breeds can have.
I used to have a calico tortoiseshell, she was a very pretty cat. Tabby only looks good if they are silver tabbies IMO.

please please PLEASE go to an animal shelter and get a pet there, pets at pet shops are guaranteed survival and pets at shelters only have a certain amount of time before they're put down. cats don't fuckin' deserve that fate, please for the love of god just go to a shelter and pick one out I agree that you should get pets from animal shelters but I'm surprised your animal shelters put down healthy animals. One of our charities (RSPCA) did that, the word got out and they were overtaken by others promising they never would. Other charities, such as the Dogs Trust (whose slogan is 'we never destroy a healthy dog' ), ended up taking all the donations. Charities still obey the laws of the market and over here at least it's not cost effective to put down healthy animals.

get a cat from the humane society and it owes you a wookie life debt

In reference to the OP the cat in the picture is a british shorthair like mine. We got him from the RSPCA animal centre. Best thing to do really. He is a little monster .

Any cat that are cute and works for LOLcat pictures would be a good choice.

Cats don't end up in a shelter because they are messed up, they end up there because stupid people get a pet they don't really wanna have, or some giant morons don't want to get someone to take care of them while they are on vacation so they just put their pets out on the streets. So like people have said, go get a cat from a shelter please !
also be careful not to get one of these : + Show Spoiler +
