Hey everyone, I apologize so much for leaving you all hanging on the results. I feel like I haven't had a moment to breathe since I competed in Miss Oregon! There are lots of stories to tell, but being that I realize we are all, for the most part, media junkies, I'll keep it short and post lots of pictures. Then, if you guys wanna hear more, just ask. Most of these pictures are actually a part of a photo essay that my friend Paras Purohit is putting together, and you know what they say about a picture and how many words it's worth.
So I took 3rd runner up, which is great! Once you make top 5, it's a crapshoot anyway, so I felt great about that. I also won the overall interview award, which means that I got the highest score out of anyone on my interview with the judges panel. For me, that's a victory, cause that's what I would most like to be judged on anyway. My good friend CC Barber won the crown, which is awesome because she's super amazing, and hilarious because that makes the second year in a row that I have beat a girl in preliminary competition who then goes on to win Miss Oregon. lol Just goes to show how subjective this whole process really is. Anyway, I'm happy. Not winning the crown means I can do lots of other things, like keep living in my awesome little house, go on summer vacations... ...*looks meaningfully at ring finger*... ahem...lots of things I can think of to do this year.
Anyway, now lots of people are trying to get me to compete for Miss Oregon USA, and I just can't decide whether I can rationalize it. the competition is much different, and I would have a good chance of winning. It would be easy, and could be fun... but I just don't know if I can support and represent, or even basically defend the Miss USA organization the way I could Miss America. I don't know, what do you guys think?
Alright, pictures:

ORIGINAL OP + Show Spoiler +When I was first asked to compete in the Miss Portland pageant, I laughed. A local qualifier for the Miss America Program, I imagined Miss Portland to be a Miss Congeniality/Drop Dead Gorgeous-esque debacle of female objectification. My progressive, pseudo-feminist self would never go for such a thing! But, after thinking it over and looking over the expanse of nothingness that I had to do now that I had just graduated from OSU I figured... why not? It would definitely be some good laughs and, even though I definitely wouldn't win, I would for sure come away with some hilarious stories about stupid pageant girls for my friends. I was right about one thing, I did come away with some hilarious stories, but I was also wrong...I won swimsuit, evening gown, and the crown. The video of my coronation is hilarious, I react first with confusion, then disbelief and a look of like "no, you called the wrong name", then laugh at the hilarity as I hesitantly creep to the front of the stage. + Show Spoiler +I love the other girls' faces in this one lol. I'm like..."What the heck?" That started a whirlwind year of competition where I competed at Miss Oregon, winning the best overall interview award and placing as second runner up to the crown. + Show Spoiler +This summarizes my place in beauty pageants very well… lol backstage getting ready for the show Competing in swimsuit On-stage interview for top 5 Top 5 at Miss Oregon I was then invited to the "Miss National Sweetheart" pageant, which is basically a loser-bracket for Miss America, a pageant for all the runners-up from all the states. + Show Spoiler +Performing my talent, singing Martina McBride’s “Anyway” Miss National Sweetheart and I Beyond all the competitions, I made anywhere from one to 4 appearances per week, working for charities, meeting local celebs, politicians, and other prominent figures, and being a spokesperson for the city. + Show Spoiler + A charity golf event with some other titleholders Governor Kulongoski and I http://miss-portland.org/PhotoAlbum/2008/Miss%20Portland%202008/Album/slides/Guitar2.jpg Killing Guitar Hero at the county fair One of the parades I was in In the end, I developed a real, profound respect for the Miss America Program. It is nowhere near the stereotypical movie beauty pageant, it is a competition for real, motivated, intelligent and compassionate young women who need a way to pay for school. Most of the judging is based on your interview and talent, their way of measuring your communication skills, knowledge of current events, commitment to a social platform of your choosing, and discipline to develop your strengths. All good things to be judged on! Honestly, my faith in women was pretty much restored after I spent Miss Oregon pageant week with 40 women competing against each other, without one unkind or catty moment between us. The amount of money that is donated to charity, the amount of hours that are put into volunteering, and the sheer volume of scholarship dollars that are awarded through this program are staggering. That brings me to where I am now. When I entered the program, I did so with the understanding that the money I won could be applied to paying off my student loans. In all, my scholarship winnings came to about 5200 dollars, enough to pay off one of my 2 remaining loans. However, when I went to collect the money, I was told that I was only allowed to use it toward "current or future educational needs," meaning it would only be paid out directly to a school. I spent weeks making calls, trying to find loopholes, and trying to understand why no-one would have told me this in the first place. Apparently, nobody knew. All my directors were outraged, as were my fellow competitors, but there was nothing we could do. The rules of the Miss Oregon non-profit are and apparently always have been such that they prevent me from using any of my winnings unless I go back to school. HOWEVER. IF I were to win Miss Oregon in the coming year, I would then fall under the rules of the Miss America non-profit, which is a bigger one, a different kind, and THEN I would be allowed to use my funds toward my loans. HENCE... I'm competing again this year for Miss Oregon. First, I have to win the only local qualifier I am now eligible for, Miss Tri-Valley. It is the hardest qualifier to win because it is open to girls from all over Oregon, not just one local region. You guys are going to love this though: I used to run on a platform of raising awareness about environmental sustainability. Something I really do care about, but this year I've switched to something a little closer to home: "Reaching Out, Rocking Out: Mentorship Though Gaming" THAT'S RIGHT TEAMLIQUID! This beautyqueen is taking gaming to Miss America! (She hopes.) I started an after school program for at-risk kids at a local middle school, where we play Rock Band and other games after school to ideally help reduce juvenile crime in the area. The idea is to meet kids where they are, doing things they like to do, in order to build real relationships that can lead to real mentorship and thus, less delinquency. Further down the road, I also hope to connect them to some of the Wii clubs that are popping up in retirement homes in the area, in order to build bridges between two age groups that are often forgotten by the busy rest of society. I'm really excited about it, I get to tell a lot of important people why gaming is awesome, and hopefully I can develop a program that can grow and be duplicated. I'm using Geoff already to make appearances as "A real live pro-gamer" and hopefully, if I make it far enough, I can get some of the bigger gaming companies involved in terms of sponsorship. We'll see though. First I have to win Tri-Valley. ...and since I have pneumonia, any of the working out for swimsuit or volunteering for platform stuff hasn't been happening so much lately. Anyway, I just thought I'd update everyone on this stuff. If I do make it Miss America this year, maybe TL can win TV for me and text-vote me in as the people's choice! lol In closing, here are some pics from the Miss Portland 2009 pageant this past week where I passed on my crown: + Show Spoiler +2009 Judges and I (the guy in the back was from the Twilight movie omg!) Talking about my volunteer trip to India that year Farewell Speech Tearful goodbye to Miss Portland’s Outstanding Teen Passing on the crown to a good friend, yay! Geoff is such a good bf, he was there all day helping move things, being a bouncer, and bringing me medicine cause I had pneumonia lol Then he started tickling me so the photographer couldn’t get any more good photos cause I couldn’t keep a straight face. Anyway, www.miss-portland.org still has pics up from my year, but not for long I bet. I'll update about Tri-Valley. Help me stay motivated! (Edit: bandwidth probs fixed...blame the ultralisk cake lol) EDIT: Haha... I won the title of Miss Tri-Valley! That means I am off to pageant boot camp in a couple weeks, where I will train for the Miss Oregon production, and will compete for Miss Oregon in July! After that, if I am blessed enough to win, it would be off to Miss America! There is lots to tell, and I'm too exhausted atm, but I have some pictures I can post if you guys would like to see, and I'd love to tell more about what I'll be up to getting ready for Miss O, and share the hilarious stories as I run into them at camp. It was a tough competition, but I had so much support from friends and family. I would especially like to thank Navane while I'm here... I was without backup music until just a few weeks before the pageant. I sent him the song I wanted to sing, and he created a background track for me on his own that sounded exactly like it! He is my hero. As soon as I get pictures together, I'll post them, as long as nobody minds that I keep bumping this. Thanks for all the well-wishes...this is such an awesome community and I feel so lucky to be a part of it.
EDIT: Fixed spoiler

Those pictures of the two of you are adorable.

Congrats! I have a friend who's competed in tons of pageants, including Miss Florida several times, so I'm familiar with (granted it's from the outside) just how nerve wracking it can be. Takes some serious self-confidence, along with a solid support group, to get through that. Your findings about the Miss America program are ones I've found echoed time and time again by people who actually get involved; funny how much perspective can change with a little first-hand experience.
I really love the helping troubled kids with gaming program idea. Really love it - was smiling like an idiot the whole time I read about that. It's such a great thing to do and actually has some merit, unlike - sadly - many attempted "help" programs. I'll be rooting for you from across the country just for that.
Best of luck to you, and hope you get well soon so you can get back to working towards your goal.

That black dress looks simply amazing on you. Great photos, great story (even tho i'm not buying that all of the girls are genuine in their charities/beliefs/views). Good luck in future!

Definitely a big congratulations on this. You've definitely changed my view on the whole Beauty Pageant deal, I really had no clue (as it seems many of us didn't) about what it really takes to do this.
Now, I'm going to steal the spotlight off of the whole "pageant" deal to say something about the program you've undertaken. I think it's great initiative that you're doing something with that and, most of all, you have a plan. I hope that that really works out for you because you've seemingly got a great head on your shoulders, and Inc is a lucky man to have you.

Actually, Miss America and Miss USA are two VERY different things! I thought they were one and the same too, until I got involved. Miss USA is not a scholarship program, it is basically a model search, owned by Donald Trump. There is no talent portion of the competition, a very different, very "fluffy" kind of interview, and it costs almost 900 dollars to even enter. Miss America costs nothing to enter, is a non-profit, and gives away thousands upon thousands of scholarship dollars to multiple contestants, not just the winners. That said, I competed with the girl who is now Miss Oregon USA, and she is awesome...so there you go.
|
Thanks for the support about the gaming platform, I'm really glad you guys like it. And if you have any ideas or resources you'd like to share, I'm all ears! You guys are the best resource a girl could ask for when it comes to putting something like this together!

Hey guys, I'm in the process of writing my platform statement...basically a write-up of my mentorship program. I turn it in to the judges and then get interviewed about it. I'm sure, of anyone, you guys have some pretty good answers for the kinds of questions they are bound to ask about video games being good or not for kids. Any sources/suggestions for me? Other ideas of what you would ask if you were a judge?

Well it's not like it was THAT out of line, just an incredibly dumb reply because the OP was obviously meant as a personal story. Im just saying, if that warrants a 1 week ban I can name about 10 examples that deserve bans (north korea missile thread for example).

frits I love how you pretend that you are somehow above being stylized.. you ALWAYS post the same psychological blah blah and try and put people into an argument on their emotions/thoughts where you can flaunt your edjumakashun and yet you have the audacity to "call" me on it as if I am somehow unique in that way? Pot calling kettle black my friend.
You are the same formulaic poster that I am. Sorry. Just so happens I do other things around here whereas you don't. Guess the joke is on you.

I offer my insight relevant to the discussion in my opinion, and enjoy debating about it. Are you seriously criticizing me on being passionate about what I study? I don't post trolling garbage in threads where it has no place, big difference. Also there's more than 1 way to contribute, I always get very big ratios on the vods I download from this site. I can't believe you're calling me out on something like that as if you're somehow more valuable to this site. (Im not arguing actual value here, just that pointing something like that out seems kind of sad.)
And that will be my only reply to this because I don't feel like getting banned because of your gimmick posting.

I am more valuable on this site than you. That is a definite ^_^ and if that is sad to you that is fine.. bw and this forum are important to me and I don't think being valuable here is sad.
You were banned within the week for trolling.. don't tell me you don't do that.
You are passionate about something sure. That is fine. But cramming it into every post you make at a detriment to the other posters is not fine. We get it. You are really well educated and think yourself pretty damn smart, wonderful. When you scapegoat terrible derails with "I was just doing an experiment" and "I don't speak english very well" that makes you some kind of bad though. That is all I am "calling you out on."

I get banned all the time. So just call me "Mr. Pot." But you've been banned a billion times yourself. And you've trolled way more than me and Frits combined. Times a fucking thousand. So you talking about trolling... LOL (kind of like me talking about it :p).

Oh yeah, I really don't give a fuck what you say in response. And neither should anyone else in this thread. You have way too much a vested interest.

Is the problem the objectifying or the insulting? The insulting is a bit much (just as if someone posted an original short story and you gave a 1 line response saying "this sucks") but the objectifying seems fine, and there IS a lot of white knighting going on in this thread.

Anyways, what do you think unc's chancing are at winning? I'm being serious. I'm wondering about your perspective on this. I personally would be against my g/f doing a pageant thing. But that's a problem that's never come up. So we know unc's opinion on all this. Do you mirror? Do you fear her self-esteem might end up taking a hit? Or is she so gosu a loss doesn't affect her like it would Testie.
Sorry for not reading. Totally my fault.

Games good or bad for kids? I'd say the pro's and con's pretty much even out. Some skills such as multitaksing, contact with people all over the world in case of online gaming, puzzlesolving etc are usefull irl, the obvious problems of overdoing it, not getting out anymore, and unhealthy lifestyles could be cons, but as most things these things simply revolve around moderation. The entire violence argument is a bit of an iffy one, there has always been some violence and kids have been playing pretend war etc for ages, then again the kind of allienation kids can get from their parenting might be bigger with the whole online world, and as such parents might lose track of what their kids are doing etc. But a friend of mine just walked in so I'll just cut this off ^^ GL in any case ^^

She took 3rd in the previous years competition having never done this before.. do I believe after a year of experience and improving she has a chance to win? Obviously.
She has no risk of taking a confidence hit as she is as confident and secure as you can be. She already did this and as far as I know she made it out with a stronger self-esteem than before.

Well, there are all sorts of good stories... like the amount of duct tape that is used back stage in a hurry in lieu of undergarments... the substances that are used to keep swimsuits in place... the tackleboxes full of makeup and jewelry that some girls end up with... the 10 hour days we spent dancing on our feet in heels... My favorite, though, was how, during pageant week and at our rehearsals prior, they would talk sooo much about eating right and excercise, and then they would provide us with a sponsored lunch where, at the end of the buffet table, there were TONS of chocolates, sweets, cookies, etc. All the girls would like, look at it longingly and then go back to their iceburg salad. NOT I!
One time in particular, I had been complaining for days about how effing much I wanted a brownie. I eat a lot of baked goods, and when all your meals are from sponsors, you can't exactly make that request. My diet is such that I satisfy all my cravings and thus, never binge eat. I really like brownies, okay? Like, to the point where I was jittery and irritable after not having any for a week. Well, this one day, I think it was the very day before the pageant, they served us up the hugest, moistest, most delicious platter of brownies you have ever seen. Most of the girls grabbed a salad and walked by it wistfully....looking at it as if it was the most beautiful, unattainable thing they had ever seen. This poor, huge pile of brownies, left all by it's lonesome! I, on the other hand, sang for joy, did a little dance, and took three. Everyone looked at me in shock, expecting me to be embarrassed, but I just wolfed them down with the happiest smile on my face you ever did see. Before long, almost all the beauty queens were picking at brownie crumbs lol. Then, when I was on stage being interviewed the next day for the top 5, they asked me a question like, if they were to give me a donut on stage right now, would I eat it? and the entire backstage erupted in laughter. Apparently, I talked about baked goods even more than I thought. On stage, in response, I asked that someone bring me a box of brownie mix so that I could bake them in my room after the show. They did.

It's the only kind of tape that stays sticky under those lights. You just have to be careful cause it will rip off a fake tan when you pull it off.

This is very cool. A friend of mine did stuff like this (competed in Miss Michigan). I have great respect for what you're trying to do.

About 3 times a week on arms nowadays. I try to go every day but don't work out the same muscle groups each day.

If anyone is in the area and would like to come, the Miss Tri-Valley competition (my qualifier for state) will be on April 25th. The more people that come to cheer me on, the better I look, so I'd love it if you did! iNc will be there.

really proud of her.. she did such a great job!
the judges/community seems to think she could be miss oregon and even miss america.. lots of work ahead of her Hopefully we can make a good run at it!
thanks for the support btw <3

Congrats! Being such an amazing lady I'm surprised you haven't won Miss Oregon already, good luck this time!

/me whistles in an objectifying manner
you are gorgeous

omg congratulations! Keep it up and hope to see you on TV next year at Miss America!

video games are a hotly contested in the area of social benefit.
if you pull that off, if you can make the benefits clear on a universal stage, forget Miss Oregon you should be a national or international spokesmodel.
i have read your voluntary service, and have a few comments, not necessarily positive or negative (skip this if not interested).
i wouldn't lump rock band and starcraft in the same boat. speaking on behalf of all games is pretty complex, i would speak on the results that you have achieved with your works. and speaking of which, helping younger children is in fact just as valuable or more so than helping teenagers or troubled young adults. i applaud that effort, it's an area that most people never pay attention to.
other than that, i was vague on what the future of your voluntary program includes, however i'm sure that is something you are saving for the big questions on the public stage.
thanks for posting about your experience, it is really a big lift knowing that starcraft players have champions among them.

awesome, congrats! good luck!

THAT'S RIGHT TEAMLIQUID! This beautyqueen is taking gaming to Miss America! (She hopes.)
We all hope for that!! We all do!!
I find really interesting you are looking to help people by using video games, makes me think if I can get something like that running in my country. Time will tell.

Do you have any video from the event, like where you are singing or doing a speech? nice pics btw.

You aren't allowed to take any...

Congrats on the pageant. However, what stuck out to me in this update was this:
Not winning the crown means I can do lots of other things, like keep living in my awesome little house, go on summer vacations... ...*looks meaningfully at ring finger*... ahem...lots of things I can think of to do this year.
Good luck to both of you :-)

congratulations uNc

I don't know if this was mentioned, but I think even if you weren't incontrol's girl, we'd still be supportive. I haven't been here that long so of course I'm not really aware of your role... Regardless, I love this community. Yeah.
Anyhow, awesome job on placing. From what I saw, you could've easily taken first - suprisingly, the 'incognito' shot was the most stunning. Though, to be fair, I haven't seen you in anything past static media yet. For all I know, you could sound like a yeti. I kid. GJ/GG.

Oregon's my new favorite state!!!!

So if I'm in the Willamette Valley, are there any events coming up here before January that I could attend and support? And catch an awesome glimpse of Inc's biceps IRL?
