WELL, The cake was mostly inspired by this picture: And this one, as far as the marines: So I started with those. Next, I baked 3 cakes, 2 basic round vanilla, and ...you may be sorry you asked... one chocolate cake in a "Precious Pony" cake shape mold. (My mom had it left over from my 8th birthday. Lawl!) I used the Pony shaped paper insert that came with the pan, and traced it onto newpaper. Then, with a sharpie, I drew an ultralisk over the existing shape, changing the legs, outlining the details, and expanding it to include the spiky hood and the blades. Once I had done that, I cut out the entire thing, and then cut the pony shape out of the middle. This left me with patterns for the shapes of the rest of the cake that would be fitted to the outside of the 'pony.' (sorry, my camera didn't have enough batteries to get pics of all these prelim steps.) Usually, for a base, I would use a platter or a cookie sheet, but those were too small for my monster ultralisk plan, so I covered a cutting board with foil. I used a sharp knife to cut around the newspaper shapes in the vanilla cake, and then fitted them to the outside of the chocolate cake on the board. Then, I had to frost them together, so that you couldn't tell it was different cakes. This took about 3 tubs of frosting. I mixed chunky chocolate and cream cheese to get the bumpy tannish-brown color for the body, and then used food coloring with vanilla and cream cheese frostings to make beige, purple, gray (which my friend who wanted to help kind of turned lavender in the end lol), and dark purple. I ran out like, a bajillion times. I started with the body and the scythes, spreading the frosting with a butter knife. In order to spread it smoothly, I had to regularly dip the knife in a cup of warm water. This was hilarious, because when I was done with the frosting that was to be spread, all that was left of the pony was his happy little face. (At this point in the process, my camera completely ran out of batteries. Sry. If I had known people would have been so interested, I would have more carefully documented each step lol!) Anyway, next, I loaded up 3 cake decorating bags with the beige, purple, and dark purple frosting. They have different shaped decorative nozzles and look like this: Then, I cut up about 4 Hershey bars with a serrated knife (they break if you don't kinda saw them) into triangle shapes. Using the frosting bags, I added the outlines, attached the spikes and the claws, and drew the face. As a finishing touch, I broke some teddy grahams in half, attached them to the board with red gel frosting, and then made some others lying in blood puddles near the bottom. I used the rest of the purple frosting for the words, and then gave them a shadow effect with the rest of the red. The final product was as you saw: and THAT, my friends, is how you make an ultralisk cake for your superstar boyfriend. <3 | ||
