This is a reality show and like all reality shows it has to be populated by 'types'. You have to have 'the jock', the 'angry female', the 'cheerleader', the 'black guy', etc. etc. A show populated with only the top gamers would be a bunch of guys like IdrA sitting around playing Magic: The Gathering. It's not like any reality show is made up of the contestants most likely to stimulate the best in competition. It's all about that calculated mix of personality types that will lead to what we're all really after: Drama. Reality shows have had the same types of people in the cast ever since The Real World hit season two. These ones just happen to play an above average amount of videogames. i have never played magic the gathering however artosis used to play it competitively

Everyone here knows that the correct way to identify the best gamer in the world is to identify the most difficult game (BW) and determine its best player (Bisu). That was easy. hahaa nice nony.

It was just an ESReality feature with users voting. Flaccid, I know that you're right but I'm just saying that's the reason it has people annoyed. For a lot of people, gaming is a refuge where it doesn't matter what you look like, how strong you are or what stereotype you fit. It's all about the bottom line (skill) and pop-culturizing it takes that away from people.

Same here. I actually watched the first episode while beered up hard so the entire thing was very lulzy to me. Im rooting hard for iNcontrol to win this though, I loved how he spoke like a total of 7 words through the entire 40+ minutes - if thats not the definition of badassness I dont know what is.

I guess it's all about the attempt to bring gaming to more of a mainstream, casual audience and subsequently alienating your dedicated base. This reminds me of an article by Chuck Klosterman where he talks about gaming criticism: The Lester Bangs of Video Games Klosterman talks about the lack of any one writing gaming criticism such as that experienced by other art forms like movies, theater, music, etc. The criticism he talks about is that which is written by people outside of the 'hardcore' and for other outsiders - the kind of stuff that a non-gamer would actually read. In the 60s and 70s when people like Lester Bangs were writing about rock music, they could touch on aspects of the culture itself and find an audience with people who would not be reading strictly about what guitar Jimmy Page uses or whatever. He argues that gaming suffers from widespread respectability because of it's insular nature - resulting in misconceptions and biases from the outside perspective. If the article doesn't make sense to people, this Q & A with Gamespot is fairly straight forward. I don't mean to equate anything Chuck Klosterman says with this show. After all, he's a good writer and this is reality TV ;-). But it's fun to talk about regardless!

Thank you. *sigh* You don't know how many calls we get going "OMGeeeeeee Geoff...are you and Kelly totally DOING each other behind camera? Are you dating her noooowwwwwwwww OMG does Anna know heheheheheheheheeeee" Just remember, they can edit anything to look like anything. Kelly wrote this note on her facebook: Geoff and I Are strickly friends. Of course the show will spin it around and make it look like were in LOVE with each other. But thats not true. We just clicked as friends, and it was a lot of fun to be around him. I mean come on people. Yeah, I was married at the time, and I met this guy for one day, and I'm instantly in love? Please. Get a grip, and realize that it's a reality tv show.
