I guess everyone is procrastinating from time to time, though some deal better with it and some... not that well. I definitely belong to the latter category and I want to know how I can get into the first one. I know there are a lot of very dedicated people here on tl.net who are successful in broodwar, poker, sports and academics among other things - activities, where you need to be strongminded and -willed to do your daily amount of work in order to reach your goals.
So, how do you it? Right now, I am using the good old 'To Do' list, which is semi-successful - I still postpone the most important things but at the end of the day, I at least got some the minor ones done (my place is never so clean as some days before a test).
Looking forward to your answers.

if anyone makes the "i'll tell you later" joke here i will ban you so hard that you, your children and your children's children will be redirected to disneyland any time they even get near to a computer

i'll tell y- oh dang
get rid of distractions, whatever is preventing you from doing what you should. Force yourself out of the house and into a nice good place for studying/whatever if you have to.
|
Kick up those primal emotions of fear or "do or die". Realizing the consequences of your actions will motivate you out of anything, or keep a memento of your past failures caused by procrastination around, like a bad test on top of your desk.
|
find out what you did when you procrastinated and make sure that you can't do any of those things.

I've never understood requesting temporary bans, you can still read the forum, so what's the big deal? If I couldn't post on TL it would merely be inconvenient, as opposed to being restricted from reading it.

Hrmm i grew up to always do the things I say. I always said "yea I want to go back to school" which I don't know when b/c I've already tried twice and just dropped out before I got anywhere. Besides that I rarely procrastinate b/c I do what I need to do plus extra...Yet I still need to get around to cleaning the garage but I need help with that b/c there is things that belong to my mother and sister. Now when I ask them are they going to help me they always say "yea" and when I am ready to take care of business either I get no help from them or just a tad bit of help which doesn't do shit but make more clutter out of the damn garage. I don't know what to say for myself other then I don't state something I know I probably won't pursue. Now my friends and family is a different story.
.....Oh and Disneyworld > Disneyland kk.
|
what sometimes helps me is, I put the books and the papers I have to work on on my desk and let them sit there. And sometimes when I'm really really bored I just grab them and start working on it. I guess it is semi-procrastination because I don't work on them right away but I tend to work on them earlier than I usually would (last day before deadline).

Looking forward to your answers. I have this problem pretty badly myself, so any advice from me is really the blind trying to lead the blind, but FWIW, making a schedule in addition to a To-Do list sometimes helps me. As long as you're sticking to the schedule, you can't push things off. You should schedule a bit more time for things than you think you'll need though, because if you fall behind, it's very easy to just say "screw it" and that is that.
There are also concentration-aiding drugs (Ritalin, Adderall, and the like) that you might try, if you haven't. They won't get you working on their own, but they can help keep you focused once you begin to work.

I always faced this as a child and I'm sure many do. But I think its important to make it a consciour effort to go against the nature that tells you to do it later.
Just a simple illustration, my house only has one pot to boil water and 3 tumblers to hold water, 2 medium sized ones that are in the refridgerator and one huge one that's warm water. I don't really use cups but I used a bottle instead.
Whenever I refill my bottle, the amount of water in the tumbler decreases by alot since my bottle is pretty big(I drink warm water). Based on nature, I usually just fill and walk back up to my room. There has always been this tinge to go boil water and I usually only boil water when the tumbler is empty but I've recently cultivated a habit of going against that nature in me to just walk back upstairs.
You have to find the little things in your life that makes you procrastinate and then force yourself to work against it. As you go on, you find that it becomes easier and easier and you will soon have little trouble with getting over procrastination in that particular thing.

I'm not sure if this relates, but at work I discovered that I always did the things I liked to do first, rather than the most important things first. If I had a list of 10 things to do, the tenth thing was the thing I liked the least, and as new things were added to my list it kept dropping down to the last spot. Now I do the thing I like to do the least first, and taking care of the rest is not a problem.

have the same problem where i say i'll do this and finish that and i end up reading some stupid crap or viewing more stupid crap on youtube. having a personal to do/ goals list help me a lot though. so that whenever i look away from the pc i see the reminders that i have. goodluck to you and keep those tips coming!

I have huge problems with procrastination, what seems to help is just set small goals for short periods of time. I really love to learn but my planning just sucks and I always end up doing hardly anything.
Never say, Im gonna write paper X entirely tomorrow, or in a week. Or, I will start learning everything in a day, because you will end up doing it at the last moment. Just say, Im gonna read 1 chapter tomorrow for about 2 or 3 hours, or write the opening of my paper, stuff like that. You have to be very clear on your goals, no vague intentions.
@Tech)Psylo, that's definately a good way as well, I've never tried it but it has come up in behavior changing theory in my study so it should work well when trying not to procrastinate.
Also, avoid anything that makes you procrastinate, don't study near your computer if you just need books. I found that studying at my faculty library helps a LOT, if you're extraverted bring an mp3 player or something to get some steady background noise, otherwise the silence will just drive you nuts.
And very important: Tell others, friends or family that you're trying to procrastinate less, so they will remind you, ask you how you're doing with your work etc.
These are all just tips, use a combination. Oh also a steady sleep schedule helps, lately Ive been going to bed at 6 am and I just fuck up my day, Im exhausted half the time.

Here are a few things I do:
1) Go to a library where I have no internet access, and where people actually study. 2) Procrastinate but using other things that I have to get done to delay me having to do the thing I am really dreading. 3) Make a daily entry in my notebook with a tally "Number of times I unnecessarily dicked around on the internet today." This brings a bit more accountability, and helps me at least.

Personally, I've found that without TL, I can just play. What I suggest you to do is temp ban from TL, IRC, uninstall SC, throw away your CD key, and set parental controls with a password like "ajdfoij3tijgw49bj09ajg oj oij OORJ)Qt gegiig", then never write it down.

The philosopher Nike had some words of wisdom on this, but for the life of me I can't remember what they were.

I pretty well need motivation for everything I do, or else I simply won't do it or procrastinate it forever.
I'd try making a reward/positive reinforcement for every task. For example, if you need to clean the house, just think how clean and nice your place will be to live in.
For homework though (unless I really like the material), I usually have negative reinforcements, for example I would say "if I don't do this now I am going to be fucked", which makes me do it.
Try that out if you already don't.

Well what are you not doing that you should be doing? Broodwar, poker, sports and academics are things people hear are good at because they love doing them.
If you have work you should be doing but are skiping. I honestly may suggest looking for a new line of work. I know its cheese but its true. Find something that does not feel like work and you'll never procrastinate.

procrastination does mess people up a lot, but then it feels as though as the time left to do something approaches zero, the rate at which you do it approaches infinity, and it's just picking the right time to start so you end up finishing at the last second

This.
I used to wonder why people went to the library to study or whatever, but then my friend (who does this normally) and I pulled an all-nighter, the first half of which took place at the library. I was floored when I realized how much more I got done in 3 hours at the library than I would have with 3 hours in my dorm room. Now whenever I have a big thing going on I try to do as much of it in the library as possible, I swear, just the library as your surroundings makes you more efficient.
Also, another method I have, that is kinda lame, but whatever, I will describe.
Imagine the thing you are doing is something else. This might work if you are procrastinating doing something because you know it is going to take long or be tedious. Idk, how to describe it, and I have an example, but typing it out will take forever, so I'm not gonna unless somebody asks.

Read stories about other people's failings, and how they are suffering because they didn't work hard Try to relate these stories to your current life, and what will happen if you don't do what needs to be done OR you can do what I do randomly just close the computer and get your ass to work rarely works, but when it does, it's wonderful
oh and doing as much work as you can before you get home is helpful once I get home it's really hard for me to work once I go to college and start living by myself I expect to get more work done
|
Sometimes it's not that bad to procrastinate Parkinson's law is always there Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
If you decide to start on an assignment or w/e a week early, you will spend a lot more time than if you are cramming that crap in the night or 2 before. And you won't lose too much quality either (recall the 80-20 'rule' and don't be a perfectionist)
at least that's my rationalization for my procrastination.
of course you have to be smart about your procrastination. if you actually don't get your shit done on time and better than the class average, then pull it together buddy.

You ask a bunch of active TL users who are most likely procrastinating?
Anyways, I try to take classes I enjoy taking and do things I like to do. Stuff just gets done that way.
|
Break bigger tasks into smaller tasks that seem very easy to do in a 1 2 hour sitting.
Also temporarily remove temptations for the time you are working it can be as easy as putting the remote on your tv in another room.
Using another log-in name for your computer so some things that are easy to click like a book mark to your fac website aren't there
Then always reward your self with some youtime after you completed a task ofc this is always means you should plan it well before it's do to fit time constraints.
For daily routines i suggest playing out time loosely for you to get your work done. Soon forcing a routine will come easily and you can learn how to switch around tasks so you can be more spontaneous with your time without running out of time. Always keep a watch on your person too.

I'm amazing at procrastination, I'm trying to fight it. My biggest enemy is the computer though. And because of that, I did horribly in school.
I'm going to try and go to the library every time there's a test, because I need to seriously stop studying the night before every test.
It worked in high school, but certainly not in college lol.

Listen to procrastination podcasts! http://iprocrastinate.libsyn.com/index.php?post_category=podcasts
Haha, the irony is that I found this site while I was procrastinating. Plus, listening to podcasts about procrastinating... hrmmm.
Seriously though, these are quite interesting and I'd recommend anyone listen to them if they want to understand the mindset of a procrastinator. Personally, I agree with his idea that most of us procrastinate because we have some "fear of failure". We're scared that if we do the task, we won't succeed in the way we want to so we just avoid doing it altogether.
Also, a key concept, we make seemingly rational decisions over a short period that builds up to irrational decisions over a long period. Example: I stay on the computer and tell myself it'll only take 5 minutes to check the email. But then it'll only take 10 min to watch jaedong rape some newb zerg. And then it'll only take 10 min to beat off to porn. Etc. until you've wasted a LONG time.
Furthermore, the internet is just such a new technology. As opposed to say doing crack-cocaine, it's easier justify our usage of the 'net. There's no taboo in spending many hours dicking around on youtube.
My own idea: I procrastinate on things because I get all stressed out when I think about schoolwork, my future lol. My warped perspective tells me it's better to be stress-free now and pay later, than to stress a little now and reap the rewards later. Oh yea, I read manifesto's posts in STarN's old topic and I agree that you'll stop procrastinating once you find something you're truly passionate about. Aligning your career with your interests is the true solution to curing procrastination
|
I've heard some horror stories with adderall. My friend took it to write an essay, but instead she got fixated on cleaning shit. Her apartment was spotless in the next six hours but essay was 0% done.
|
How I get things done is....
Schedule a time to begin. Work 45 minutes, take 20 minute break... repeat.
|
don't worry. procrastination is a reliable sign that whatever you're putting off isn't really that important.
|
Embrace procrastination. Its the best way to live. You end up doing what you want to do instead of work, and still end up doing a decent but maybe rushed job on whatever your neglecting. It always works out.

Some methods I use, some have been mentioned before.
1) Fixed times / locations. Go somewhere where people are working and set yourself a time to do it. Routine eliminates the need to reconsider.
2) Co-workers. Nothing as motivating as knowing someone else will be hitting the library early in the morning with you. And later you can coffee-break together.
3) Small doses of starting. Trick yourself by thinking "I will only do this very minor part of it" and find out that you actually DO have an interest in finishing the whole thing. Once I start going (e.g. writing an essay), I realize that I want to finish and that the topic DID interest me after all.
4) Reward yourself from time to time. If you do a black-white routine of "jolly free time" and "dead serious work time", work time will appear lots harder.
|
I'm lazy, but I find myself doing large task in small portions. Like if I have to clean my room, wash clothes, and do dishes I'll do them in small portions. I'll wash a group of clothes, at least do my bed, and then wash like all the plates, or whatever. When the rinse comes up, I'll put rinse, wash all the glasses, and do whatever i was doing. Clothes finishes, load another group of clothes, wash forks, spoons, etc, etc. Rinse clothes again, fix room a lil more, slack off a bit more.
:D if you do things in small tasks, you get everything accomplished while being lazy as hell. :D:D:D:D

Use 'Subliminal Flash' a program that deals with your subliminal mind. It flash messages at insanely fast passes and deals with your subconscious. Might seem a bit bizzare but this shit actually works, just use the part dealing with procrastination. As for the other stuff, well go ahead and try it out but it actually fucks with ur mind more than any drug so use with caution!
