I play a similar game, so I can give you the answer. It's a little bit of both. The more you play rhythm games like this, the more you begin to recognize patterns instead of individual notes. So instead of having to see and react to six different notes, eventually you only have to react to one overall pattern, making things easier. Of course, to do that you have to play enough that you've probably memorized some portion of the song's pattern unconsciously already, so that plays some part.
