The book sucked in middle school, why would the movie be any different?

You honestly feel like you had the ability to judge good literature in middle school? I mean do you even read now? What was the last book you read? Harry Potter? If you think about when the book was written and under what circustances, it's an excellent piece of writing that reflects the values of the society the author lived in. As a historical piece of literary fiction it is remarkable.

being remarkable for its time and standards doesnt make it a good story or good piece of writing by today's standards.

if that were true every kid in school would not be forced to read it growing up.

either way this is completely subjective, and we have only learned one fact from this short discussion: Charlie doesn't read very much, possibly stemming from his aversion to books he was forced to read in grade school.

You are told to read the book to analyze books with clear points in what your teacher whats you to learn. There are a lot of books regarding Knights and that king of stuff, in school most kids are here are told to read The Lay of the Cid because its easier to follow. While on that subject kids could be asked to read Don Quijote de la Mancha which approaches the same subjects with parody and in more depth, but its a longer book and a lot harder to understand.

The significance isn't that it was remarkable for its time and standards, it's that it is a rare historical piece of old English and is an epic poem, in the line of the Iliad and the Aeneid.

I thought it was a pretty good story and "good piece of writing by today's standards" means what? Easy to read?

Although it does seem pretty stupid to have middle schoolers reading it. It should probably be taught within its historical context before you move on to middle English (Chaucer) and the students really start hating everything that isn't modern.

Are you trying to cheap shot me?
I only said I don't read Fiction books. I've read plenty of nonfiction books as well as reading this site/bnet/subtitles. I'm pretty sure I read 95% more than your average 23 year old not in school.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

This movie is pretty cool. I really liked it. The plot of the film is very interesting, and the graphics and animations are simply incredible. I also read the book "Beowulf" and I can say that it is even better than the movie. You can just click for more and read a lot of interesting things. And I highly recommend reading this book, because it is not for nothing that it is the oldest of all the national epic poems of medieval Europe.

Medieval Europe has interested me always. Thank you for the source, I would even use it for school topics and homework
