That hot coffee case actually wasn't fraudulent when when you learn the details. I feel guilty for laughing at the lady because at the time it was a big joke all over tv that she was just acting like she didn't know coffee was hot.
The coffee that burned Stella Liebeck was dangerously hot—hot enough to cause third-degree burns, even through clothes, in three seconds. Liebeck endured third-degree burns over 16 percent of her body, including her inner thighs and genitals—the skin was burned away to the layers of muscle and fatty tissue. She had to be hospitalized for eight days, and she required skin grafts and other treatment. Her recovery lasted two years.

But yeah I agree that there are too many frivolous lawsuits here yet surprisingly few against corrupt politicians.

I read about this before. Doesnt change my opinion of the case. I doubt she would have won this case in any other country in the world. Really, americans seem to belive that companies have responsibility to protect their customers from their own stupidity. I handle coffee that hot (and hotter) everyday when I make myself one. Its not weapon of mass destruction.

I have a hard time believing you handle coffee hot enough to cause 3rd degree burns through clothes.
It would have to be super heated or something.

The mcdonalds coffee was between 180 and 190F, so 82 to 87C. There's nothing weird about coffee being that hot, pretty certain it's the norm for my coffee drinking friends tbh (although some prefer letting it cool down a bit before they drink it).

It had already injured a bunch of other people and it turned out McDonald’s knew and didn’t care.

On the one hand, that sounds bad. On the other hand, anywhere serving freshly brewed coffee should be serving at around that temperature, as that is the correct temperature for brewing coffee. I understand you're British, but tea is supposed to be brewed even hotter, so a fresh cup of tea is very near boiling. I haven't heard of British people sueing their local tea parlour for damages after spilling freshly brewed tea on themselves... and I trust Brits do not accept anything less than freshly brewed tea?

My mum will microwave a cup of tea 3 times before she's finished with it.

Despite popular conception, it's actually quite difficult to sue other people or entities in the US unless one is doing it without success as a goal (like Trump likes to do, for example). Some state courts give potential plaintiffs more leeway, but generally there are big hurdles one must jump to survive early motions to dismiss, and in federal courts that is even more true.

You dont drink it at boiling point, but carry the cup around the house/office - YES. Thats why I used word "handle", not drink. The women in story also wasnt injured while drinking but while adding sugar/milk.
In many restaurants You are served with drinks or dishes that will injure You if You mishandle them. Hot-pots, near boiling drinks, hot-stones etc.

I dont think Ive ever been served a liquid drink at that temperature in my life, every place that serves hot drinks that I get hot drinks from serves them at like 130 - 140F

Imho the proper way to serve tea or coffee is that is brewing before your eyes and you can smell entire process. That means 80-100 degree Celsius in most cases (176-212 Fahrenheit).

Yeah, a shot of expresso can be pulled up to 190F, so if the barista immediately hands it to you, it should be somewhat close to that temperature (though it will cool down to manageable levels in seconds, since it's a small volume)

Lukewarm coffee will always be my preference. Drinking hot liquid is annoying as hell. Just wanna move on, not savor it like foreplay. I don’t usually drink coffee, but when I do, I wait for it to be cold enough to chug, do that, then continue with my day

Basically same, except I dont let it get cold, just hot enough that I can gulp it without searing my tongue or mouth.
I also basically only drink hot chocolate or maybe a cup of some extremely old Teavana tea though, so Im hardly a connoisseur of hot beverages.
Wild to me that people are out there handling near boiling liquids like its no big deal though, but maybe its just my general preference for over-the-top safety in situations with hot stuff.

Iirc McDonald’s were serving coffee stupid hot, as a big portion of their clientele were people buying it to go and consuming later on the road, so they served it overly hot, with time to cool down.
This particular lady unfortunately got it fresh and spilled it almost immediately, hence the burns.
It’s hard to gauge a temperature of a beverage through insulating layers, there’s a reason she won the case.
You should not be served coffee that can burn you to the pubic bone, or if you are you should be informed that it’s too hot to consume and needs time to cool.
Wasn’t the first time someone got burned, McDonald’s subsequently stopped serving coffee at those temperatures.

They also appealed and had the payout reduced.

I was under the impression the initial claim was for medical costs, then a judge awarded her a boatload of cash, then it was appealed and reduced closer to the actual initial claim
