People thought this would go one of two ways: either Sondland would plead the fifth since he was in an impossible spot due to his previous testimony issues, or he would flip on Trump. He seems to have done option 2.

The only remaining question is whether or not extortion/bribery rises to an impeachable offense in the eyes of Republicans. I'm still not convinced it's getting out of the House. Democrats need to vote before support for impeachment drops below opposition to have a chance to get it out of the House and they are almost out of time.

I guess this explains why their chosen defence is that corruption is not a crime and anyway, what about the Democrats. Defending the indefensible.

Aka he found out enough others had spilled the beans that his defence of was untenable, so he amended it with all the info to avoid being held in contempt of congress for lying during his testimony (I assume it happens under oath? not actually sure).I'm just over here watching this with my jaw firmly dropped. Sondland's not fucking around. All of the stuff he is talking about is backed by a paper trail. He's going the Michael Cohen route by letting the documented communications speak for themselves. People thought this would go one of two ways: either Sondland would plead the fifth since he was in an impossible spot due to his previous testimony issues, or he would flip on Trump. He seems to have done option 2. He already flipped prior to today to save himself.

+ Show Spoiler + https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/addybaird/eric-swalwell-denies-fart-msnbc-chris-matthews In an interview Monday night with MSNBC host Chris Matthews, California Rep. Eric Swalwell appeared to...well, rip an absolutely enormous fart. "Chris, so far the evidence is uncontradicted that the president used taxpayer dollars to help him cheat an election," he said from the Capitol. The Democrat, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, appeared to react to the fart with a brief pause, while attempting not to smile. As the clip of Swalwell quickly circulated on the internet, some began to speculate that the California representative was the one behind the loud flatulence. But in a text to BuzzFeed News on Monday night, Swalwell denied having anything to do with it. "It was not me!!!!!" he wrote. "Ha. And I didn't hear it when I was speaking. MSNBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment."

No Its more likely than not that Trump was up to all sorts of fuckery, but I wouldn't impeach him but it would make it much harder to beat in the 2020 election. When Bill Clinton got impeached, Dems stonewalled the GOP, preventing Bill from being removed from office and Bill's favor ability rating rose to around 70%. The same would have happen if Trump got impeached and we would have to deal with this idiot for another 4 years. If he is going to be impeached, it better be for something undeniably terrible that even Trump has no ability to spin it into his favor.

You don't take fights you can't win. There's already the implicit concession that Democrats agree (or an insufficient amount disagree) there was nothing uncovered by Mueller worth impeaching Trump for. The alternative is that the impeachment is about what they can get political support for, not whether something meets the literal definition of "impeachable offense"

This isnt going to stop at Sondland. I have a hard time believing someone in Trumps inner circle (Guilianni, Pence,Pompeo, Mulvaney, etc) isnt going to testify to save themselves

Eventually Giuliani and pompeo will end up testifying Yes, they may end up having to unless they want to forfeit defending themselves. That just happened like 30 seconds ago with Rick Perry. Some Republican read a statement from Perry's lawyer complaining that Sondland misrepresented what happened that Perry was involved in so Schiff immediately responded that Perry was invited to testify but refused to. These people can complain all they want, but at some point they're going to have to put their money where their mouths are if they want to argue against what the witnesses are saying. Statements on Twitter or on Fox News aren't equivalent to testifying under oath and they know that.

Is trump going to fall? It feels like a pivotal point, similar to the re-opening of clintons email investigation in the 2016 campaign. It now seems unlikely to me that he will get re-elected. There really has to be something though, then its worth it for the democrats to drag it out. But dragging it out and ending up with nothing substantial, and then few months before elecion having to say "no there was nothing wrong" that would be horrible for their chances. The timing is not optimal for the democrats, would have been better if all this started to come out say 4-5 months later. Now there is enough time for people to forget about it and leave it behind if this fizzles.
