Let's see how happy TL.net really is. Let's base it on the last month. An explanation would be nice also. 10 is the highest on the happiness scale, 1 is lowest.

Poll: How happy have you been the last month?
(Vote): 1/2; depressed
(Vote): 3/4; sad
(Vote): 5/6; decently content
(Vote): 7/8; happy
(Vote): 9/10; very happy

7/8 I've emanzipated myself lately, started studying at Uni which is a lot of fun and feels like just the right thing to do for me.

I have no financial issues to deal with like other students do, I have no girl problems, I don't have a terminal disease, so why the fuck should I be unhappy? :D

Also this forum is a constantly flowing well of funny and happyness to me like 95% of the time when I'm here.
Nobody ever reads signatures of people like me, do they?

7/8. Life pace over the past month has picked up, restarted my education where I left it off. My fiancee and I made plans for her to visit me during my birthday next month, as well as possibly staying together at a private lake house come August. Until such time as I can act on the coming wonderful things, I am surrounded by serene woods, a lake to swim in whenever, and no burdening worries.

And it will be 9/10 come June.
Think. :)

I feel as if I can be whatever I want to be on that scale. Happiness is not something that is out of your control, it's a state of mind. Focus on the positive things in life and you will end up being "happy", focus on the negative things and you will end up being "depressed". The sad truth is that this knowledge makes it hard to really enjoy happiness. One can wonder if one can be happy if one does not enjoy happiness. Head explodes T_T.

Regardless, judging by the things happening in my life, I should be 7/8 or 9/10. I think too much about things like this to be able to really answer this question though.

7/8, as most of the times.
I'm very very busy with university atm, but the stuff I learn is interesting and I like the intellectual challenge. I get along very well with the people I hang out..
Also I had a strange boost of self confidence lately, don't know where it came from but I like it .
Also I kissed a very pretty girl last week.
So yeah, it's all good I guess.

i essentially agree with this
short periods below 7/8 but the 9/10 periods by far outweight them

now I wish i had a little more money and i think thats why im not at 9 10 cause well there are some things I have to pay for that I havent been able to afford paying for yet.

Can't believe I'm gonna vote 3-4 on a 1-10 happiness scale, but I have to since it's based on the last month. My two cats are gone, of which one is certified dead. My favorite cat no less.
Lost a lot of money, have to deal with a fucking whore of a landlord trying to milk me for money as I'm moving out and all in all my life is just scattered atm. If you had made this poll a few months back and pretty much at ANY time other than now, I would have voted 7/8, that's how I always am. But the last month has just sucked hard. Bring on the good times.

I think Sr18 is on the right track, but he traded his argument in at the end of his post by succumbing to this rating thing. Also I'm surprised drone thinks happiness can be rated.

Rating something as intangible as feeling happy is impossible. Not only is there no real metric, it's unlikely any of us will ever know what being, according to your poll, truly '100%' happy is, or what being completely unhappy is.

Of course, everyone has periods of their life, that vary in length and frequency, where they know they've felt happy, and maybe these known periods of happiness can be used to contrast, or identify, periods of unhappiness. That is ridiculous, though, because, ultimately, happiness is a choice. Whether or not this choice is an easy one is not important, but you're the only person who has the power to make yourself happy. This whole happiness gradient thing assumes that happiness is a random gift of life, something that either happens or it doesn't, and you calculate the arrival of this blessing based on what you perceive as good things or bad things in your life. As if the events of the world around you push up or down a scale, and at the end of the day, your position on this scale is your happiness rating.

This is my opinion, anyway, and I think that, implicitly, the rest of you have chosen to be happy or unhappy. However, feel free to share your happiness equations with me if you think I'm wrong.

It has nothing to do with shame - if someone's unsatisfied with the way they've led their life, and they feel unhappy because of it, it's completely within their power to change their lifestyle, and change their happiness.
If someone's unhappy because they feel life is unfair (it is), and the world is cruel to them (it is too), it's also completely within their power to change their happiness, but not necessarily via a lifestyle change.

I don't mean to say it's silly to contemplate your happiness, but that it's silly to think "This month I'm two fifths happy, and by next month I want to be at the six eights level!"

I know this thread is meant to be irreverent and for fun, so sorry if I'm bringing it down, but discussing happiness and life happiness are of great interest to me.

But its not always possible to change things. Last month was a sad month for me, because my girlfriend broke up with me. There was nothing I could do to change it, and there's no special way I can look at things which would make me see that in a positive light.

Obviously measuring happiness precisely is ridiculous, but its not hard for me to say "the last month I've been unhappy due to this break-up and severe financial troubles, but I'm not at a depressed stage because I have been coping better then I expected + my flat mates are great".

So yeah...you can't always change your happiness, and you can say roughly how happy you've recently been.
It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.

Of course you can't change your happiness instantly, and breaking up with one's girlfriend is usually cause to be depressed for a little while. Someone who is in control with their happiness will realize that not every relationship leads to marriage, and that breakups are a part of life. Being depressed and unhappy is a part of life too, along with being happy - it's up to you to decide to which part dominates which.

Anyway I'm going to stop before I get too preachy

1/2 which is slowly going up this month as I'm straightening my life out, sticking to a schedule, cut down on the choices of career paths to take (i'm left with automotive or culinary), working out (to fix my posture and my f'ed up knees), planning out mods for my car, and making a small but decent amount of money from my jobs ^_^
life goes on..

1/2. But I have happy moments. They just don't dominate my life like they seem to for other people. Winning a starcraft game leaves me feeling satisfied. Beating a player I know is better than me makes me temporarily happy. I'm happy when I play a game where my apm improves. I enjoy a well made omlette occasionally, and thats always nice. A good TV show makes me happy.

I guess that happiness from external stimuli just doesn't last long enough to get me to the next happy moment. Would like to be happy in the 'tween moments, when nothing entertaining's going on, but I don't seem to have that switch. "Be happy!" "Okay!" doesn't work for me.

Meh... it's not interesting.

7/8 - Even though there were a shitty period which involved cops, which I sadly can't tell ppl here. But it turned out better than expected I didn't go to jail... yet. But I probably shouldn't be happy but I have been, and I always is. It takes alot to bring me down.

9-10 almost all the time.

It's been an exciting year for me, have learned a lot of things, improved a lot, become a better person. Still a lot of things to accomplish but pretty much my ambition is fueled to the extreme and that keeps me going allday everyday.

Most of the time im really cheered up, just because im always energetic and friendly. My friends are really cool and we gather to play gears of war and the go to drink some beers. My only "down" is that my gf broke with me but meh, she was probably out of her mind , and she's losing this fine piece haha. i have a good job( i work at game rush, a videogame store yay ), im doing fine in college. 7/8!
ctstalker i think it's perfectly fine to 'rate' happiness despite the lack of a concrete measure. recess is the 10 for an elementary school kid, and driving across the nation with only a giant green arrow pointing left on a map is mine. there are moments when the sun's just right and something about the wind brushes everything in surprising clarity and you just know that you've found something good.

we are brought up with the objective to find 'happiness' in our lives, but even cute stupid forest creatures are down sometimes, even my yippityyappity dog sulks when nothing's wrong. it's overly idealistic to expect that it's all just a matter of choice. you factor in human civilization to our base animal instincts and it complicates everything a thousandfold. what's wrong with drifting and letting the big world push you around a bit? the proactive spirit that insists on changing everything to his liking is a genius, not the common human.

5/6 I'm content. Always have been that way just because of the way I grew up. I'm just now barely climbing out of my poor lifestyle but I'm no where near completion of a lot of my life's goals. I think maybe 5-10 years and at least 75% of the goals completed I'll be happier. (assuming I make it)

Of course on the other hand life is pretty pointless when you think about it so my misanthropy kinda keeps me from being clouded by happiness.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

3/4 - school related. as soon as i'm done with getting into med schools, i'll be aiming for family physician rather than any particular specialty, so then i'll be at a consistent 7/8

if you all keep thinking you'll magically be happy someday after reaching achievement X or goal Y - then you're never really going to be happy

Happiness isn't about the events that happen to you, but about the way you interpret them. It's simply a chemical balance in your brain that has to go through both sad and happy concentrations to avoid entropy, and your ability to only call happy reactions to selective attention is your self-esteem. No person can be perpetually happy or sad or even always happy or sad within a given scale. Also considering that every measurement is subjective and is itself prone to interference from a happy or sad mood, saying any number on the 1-10 scale would be correct for nearly everyone.
All you need in life is a strong will to succeed and unrelenting determination. If you meet these prerequisites, you can become anything you want with absolutely no luck, fortune or natural ability.

5/6 or 7/8.

Schools almost over, which I'm happy but the finals and all these stupid projects I have to do are pissing me off. (Dissecting pig, which is cool but we have a test on it after which I hate) and my math grades aren't going too well.

And I'm just becoming isolated around, not talking to my good (girl) friends alot for some reason. But I have basketball intarumurals this tuesday and wednsday, playing 2 games the first day, root for me baby!

3/4 for me here. Maybe I'm just overreacting but my grades are all fucked up, and I'm guessing that I'm not even going to make the public universities. I'd be 1/2 right now, but girlfriend power keeps me up a little higher

Bad luck and some things from past seems to be haunting me.
But I also do a lot of activities and alcohol to compensate so hopefully I don't get depressed.
Also have a lot of things to do for school(but that doesn't seem to trouble me).

I'd say my biggest problem in life is boredom because nothing motivates me or genuinely draws my interest.

Anyone else have that problem?

I had that problem before. For me the solution was setting goals for my life. Wanting to get succesful and learning languages. I started learning turkish and japanese and now Im rarely bored.

I always tell people be happy and stay happy is the only real important thing in living. However realistically, I can only achieve a 7/8 regularly. I think this is innate in human beings because of all the imperfections in this world and in us.

Then there will be the days where you feel 9/10 like when you scored straight As for that particular exams, got fantastic appraisal from your boss or colleagues or went out with this chick somewhere and days where you feel like a 3/4 when you lost to a 5 pool rush! LOL. j/k but it's somewhat true. It's just human to have highs and lows.

People who claims it's a 9/10 all the time has either a incredibly worriless life or self deluded. On the other hand those who says they are 3/4 all the time just needs to break free from that mentality and find a purpose to live.

I would say having a goal ROCKS!! really, if you have a purpose and you stick to you, you feel fantastic. In my university days, I aim to get As all the time and sometimes I don't but because I aim for that I do most of the time and that 4 years were simply "exciting" so to speak. Hope this can help some out.

It's a comedy to claim thy superiority when it's anothers' inferiority which elevated thy mediocrity

7/8 got a job, work is easy, and abit light, that\'s one thing that\'s contributing to a mixed feeling of happiness and unhappiness (happy cause it\'s easy, unhappy because of the unease at not having something to do at work). The main reason for that 7/8 score is my relationship. So glad that we actually met 2 or so years ago, otherwise I wouldn\'t have him today.
