This post was written for two purposes. One was to spread information regarding a member of our community. The second was to serve as a warning to people online. Not everything is what it seems.
Last week, Zia aka IcedEarth aka oG)Nis aka many many others posted this thread here. In 24 hours, there were over 300 heartfelt responses wishing Zia good luck and a healthy recovery. Some of the responses were lengthy, highly personal and sensitive. People even offered to donate money. I thought it showed the true heart of this forum. However, some of us at TeamLiquid began speaking behind the scenes about the thread and about “Zia” in general. After some investigation, the following was discovered:
IcedEarth browsed TL ten hours before posting that thread. In the evening, they returned to the site, browsed for another 20 minutes, and then spent 25 minutes writing. After that, IcedEarth spent the next 24 hours browsing TL constantly, outside one seven hour stretch. Obviously, the story in the thread is false.
However, there is more. Every post by IcedEarth has been made from the state of Tennessee. This means that it is impossible for this person to have been in many places previously claimed; Scandanavia and Korea.
Lastly, several people close to the Zia character have had doubts about the identity. After speaking with them, the common consensus was that “Zia” did not exist. It was merely a creation by somebody else. These points are simply the most damning in a long list of lies told by “Zia” over a long time.
When I spoke to “Zia” about this, “Zia” admitted it was a fictitious character, but then proceeded to tell me an equally impossible story to explain it. “Zia” has been lying for so long, it is impossible for them to tell the truth. The truth is simply this. “Zia” is a character created by one person, a boy, who decided to act as a girl online. This is not unheard of. What is unusual about it is the length of time and dedication spent to creating this character, and making it believable for so long.
Why post this? There was considerable debate about whether this should be posted or not. Had IcedEarth been only at TL, it may have been let go. However, “Zia” is a well-known figure in the community. “Zia” has also actively tried to cultivate friendships with other gamers, and people have become emotionally involved. In the end, “Zia” has hurt people.
Much of this community is based upon real friendships, it cannot survive otherwise. It is too old. The mods at TL are not simply staff at a website, but are friends who share real feelings and spend time together. The people in clans like .smi are not together only because of a common game, they game together because they form a bond that could exist outside the game. Even this forum, which has many members no longer interested in the game of BW, still hangs together because people form a bond. When one person actively creates those bonds using lies, people get hurt. Be true to yourself online, and if you meet somebody who seems too good to be true, take it with a grain of salt.
As for IcedEarth, I can only hope that the person behind the computer can examine themselves deeply, and decide what value they have gained with their actions. Perhaps they will respond to this, and perhaps they won’t, but I feel that coming clean 100% is the only path to peace of mind.

never did like zia, and i didnt like how people treated her softly because she was a girl. can't say i'm horribly surprised and i think this should be a lesson to all about sucking a persons ass just cuz they say there a girl.

Hah kinda funny to those who didn't know Zia, weird for those who did. this is really weird, im pretty sure zia is a girl just by feel, from the games ive played with, vs and seen, her low self confidence and overall comments she makes had me convinced she was a girl for sure. Reminds me of all the Zia sucking going on over the years because people thought she was a girl. Zia would post a common reply in a thread that didnt warrant any quotes or replies like "lol", "Awesome news", "Chuck Norris" and got quoted replies 15 pages later in the thread.

I don't know, but I find the whole thing a little funny. I always thought if you could make your own entertainment, it is kinda a sign of showing you have some smarts. Maybe this was just his/her way of doing it. Granted, it is a bit sad they would go this far with it. Also, messin with people and their feelings is crossing a line in my opinion.

I was aware of zia's penis for a long time actually and dropped many hints on this forum. Maybe it is because I am a complete idiot that nobody took it serious. However the last thread Zia made went a little too far so madness had to end. i am very disappointed by all who played along and will probably stop contributing to this community in any way, not because i talked to zia (i never did) but because i am surprised of how far a bunch of retards can go with something, even seemingly respectable people who give coherent opinions on many threads, knowing that it might hurt other people's feelings and which they wont even get anything from anyway
its in this type of situations that we realize that although many people will act like fisheye but very very few will be like him and do what he did, and im not sure its worth to give back to the community when it now seems that only one out of a thousand people are worth anything at all, fuck people are even laughing at this now, theres almost no serious posts in this thread and come people are even competing to see who already knew about it before and who was smart enough not to be fooled, thus using the whole fact to try to boost personal ego while other people might actually be crying on their keyboards about this and you dont really seem to give a fuck
so why post game reports, why vote on every poll, why help people out on the strategy forum, why post funny stuff for other people to enjoy and so forth, nearly noone in here would deserve it, might as well just PM the people who do. so yeah, fuck you.

about 2 1/2 years ago, I was studying but not studying and spending every day getting high and roughly every third day getting drunk
this is a destructive behaviour and eventually I found myself well, not doing anything productive at all. I just.. were. I didn't feel bad about it at that time, but I guess this was because I was constantly high. then suddenly this icedearth character starts posting on tl.net, and I start talking to "her". (i'll just refer to zia as that from old habit ) we talked for some months and then suddenly after 3 months or so she's suddenly really sad one day explaining how she has to go to korea because her dad was near death in the hospital because of alcohol poisoning. this makes me (and many others) especially sad and sympathetic because we like this person, I'd be sad if any dad of a bnet friend of mine was close to death. ;( so we were of course telling this person how saddened we were and how we thought she was a great person, basically not very different from the busted leg thread she got my phone number and said she was perhaps going to call from korea when she got there if she needed someone to talk to and then 5 minutes before she leaves, after like pretending there was something she had to tell me that she wasn't able to say, she starts going you know, heh, this is incredibly different from anything I have ever told anyone about love but I love you. and im like heh and then she's like lempiä te and logs off
then I go right to google and search for +"i love you" +finnish and waddayaknow it's lempiä te so I end up believing it and eventually feelings and sympathy and self-dislike as I am at this point no longer high, and broke, because I had spent such a long time getting high and drunk that I had spent all the money I was supposed to have that summer, however I am still not doing anything productive (and I failed every course I had that semester) (this was around may. we first started talking around february)
having her email and everything, I write her a mail telling her how I really care about her and really feel for her and hope everything was going to be fine eventually down in the email somewhere adding Exclusively Random Individual Always Delivering Original Rape (which was the line I added to my RANDOMINATOR profile to let clever people figuring out my aka, as it had been started out as a smurf account. ) Lachrymosely Over Vacuity Ensuing Stellar Zestbringers Indefinite Absense (which, to those who don't feel like dictionarying up things, would mean something like tearful over the empty space following the shining bringer of zest's (joy, happiness, zestbringer was a word I had to make up, but calling someone a zebra is not very romantic. ) indefinite absense while also spelling out I love you I thought it was a brilliantly crafted piece of romance anyway shouldve kept all those emails because they were just incredibly great. :D
then one day she manages to go to a internet cafe in korea and we talk a bunch more and well, I end up waiting for her to get back to finland (which she probably did in july or something. ) and we well, show mutual interest in meeting eachother all this time I had like, growing feelings for her (as I had nothing else I wanted to do, I ended up spending a long time thinking and philosophizing, zia ended up being an inspiration, something to aim for, and well, we talked a lot, and basically decided on "let's meet and then figure stuff out" however then one day, she had the funny idea of fucking with fayth, and told him that me and zia had already met, and were together and well I thought this was funny at that time so I followed up. it didn't really seem like I were lying, because in my imagination, a meeting was not that far away.
anyway, after she told fayth, we would often be watching replays together with well, both fayth and other people and then it became important to keep up the act around those people as well, because otherwise fayth would find out and the joke died or something eventually, this made everyone knowm and eventually our state of being in a relationship happened to apply to us as well and honestly, it created some really funny jokes and situations, and well.. we matched like cha zam finishing each others jokes and thoughtlines pretty often, and having really many cool conversations I would be smiling and laughing pretty much constantly during this phase, I had started working now and I was generally really really happy, even though I somehow had a girlfriend I had not met. I actually never told my real life friends about it though. I figured I was going to surprise them one day through suddenly having a hot chick with me. what I said was limited to "so I've met this chick who is the sister of the guitarist in sonata arctica she's pretty cool"
I remember feeling forced to lie about it at worldcybergames "in real life" too because well, I got asked about it, and I didn't mind talking about her, as at that time I was still under the belief that I was going to meet her really soon.
but then eventually as time went by, we never met and stuff wasn't as great anymore. she eventually budged and gave her reasons for not having been able to meet me, saying how even though she deeply trusted and loved me, it was incredibly hard for her both to come visit me, and to give me her address, because the last time she had given someone her address through the internet, she had ended up getting gangraped. (she was always racist towards chinese like even in the first conversation I had with her more than 6 months before this, and blamed this on them being chinese) this made me very sad to hear and it was said in a very.. believable way, and well, I had read quite a bit about the psychology of rape victims and her personality really fit with it. this zia person had incredibly many issues actually, having been suicidal, but she also had incredibly many good qualities. she would also often tell me how I was the by far best thing in her life and how incredibly important I was to her, so I almost never put any real pressure on, because I was afraid how she'd respond to it. and, while of course, there were occasional holes in her stories (and she did admit to having lied several times, but she explained that those lies were only lies she told me to make me like her because she was playing a character stripped of real confidence, in the sense that she did not like herself. (a lot of fake toughness though. ) so I was weighing up real/fake reasons and sort of thought that "no way in hell does someone pretend to be another person 8 hours daily for 6 months." although I also always had the feeling she was american not finnish, largely because of the way she spelt. she'd misspell apparently "apparantly" pretty often, and that is only a spelling mistake made by americans, and definitely not by people who learn to write seperately from learning to talk (which zia claimed was the case. )
but I was afraid that if she were real, me showing distrust would make her kill herself. and even if I leaned towards her being fake, I could not confront her with it because what happened if she was indeed fake? either she was fake and gave me a bullshit story that I would either believe or not believe, (or went out in public and at that point, I was much less interested in that happening than now) or she gave me a real story, or she was real but still gave me a bullshit story, or she was real and killed herself. it seemed like I couldn't really gain anything.
as time went by however (we stayed "together" for about 6 months or so, including 2 "breakups" because she would never meet me but she then pretended to become incredibly upset and crying really hard, and then I told her that I really didnt want to break up but we would really have to meet soon to which she replied that she really was going to)
she also ended up moving to usa, and that was it for me. we still stayed friends though, but had decided to end everything else after it became really clear she wouldn't have time to come to meet me before she went to usa. the thing is, during these last months (from october to january pretty much), zia the character was in a constant state of horrid depression and illness. at this point I had of course also thought of the possibility of her not being real, however, I was afraid that if she were, me pressing on to much could well make her end it.
then eventually, not that long after she had moved, I was messaging her one night going hey hey hey hey on msn and well, apparently zia's brother was there alone at that time, and responded being annoyed by the msn sounds he went "hey dude he's not here right now stop doing that"
and in true eriadorian fashion, I started laughing out loud it was a fucking beautifully executed hoax that's for sure. and it left me emotionally educated like no other. as weird as it might seem, I'm glad it all happened. I enjoyed it more than I disliked it (we had amazing conversations) and I learned amazingly much about both myself and well, people.
and now I was free.
I do regret lying about it later, but it was mostly because I didn't want to have to come out and tell this story to everyone, and I didn't see how not knowing hurt people. but just saying "yeah" when someone asked me if I met her was much less well.. time consuming than telling them no and the entire story, and I didn't want to talk about it before, as well, realizing you fell in love with a guy over the internet is slightly embarassing. just slightly. :D
I have no hard feelings about it all whatsoever tho. I was incredibly stupid and naive in many ways but then again you gotta experience to learn. =]

This is just sad. I have known about this for a looooong time, since Zia-person absolutely wanted to join cF. He/she told me how desperate ppl was to make him/her join their clan, to "advertise" for it. Becos he/she was famous. She also told me how every progamer i knew the name of was eating out of her hand. She had then RIGHT where she wanted them, and they just loved her. Zias words. Never seen anyone willing to do so much just to get their way. Not ever. Even funnier when she asked TreK ( the guy i live with) if he had "a thing for her". We both laughed our asses off. Did not take me long to find out that there was something totally wrong with this person. I talked to one of the finnish guys, and he told me that Zia did not even speak finnish at all. Hmm... weird for a person coming from Finland or what? Then i traced his/her ip on the forum.... It was fra a state in USA... Tennessee. Then i asked Ilvy to do a trace on Wgt, and she came up with the same state in USA. I asked a third friend to do the same.... he came up with the same town and the same state in USA. I used a bot to ping him/her on bnet, us east. He/she had a ping on 16-31. Noone from europe has a ping under 100, no matter how good connection they have. So i knew he/she lied. This person was in USA, and not in Finland. Im not even sure he/she has even been to Finland. But i know that he/she loves Nightwish, and they are from Finland... nice country to pick if u are gonna fake a person on the internet. So i was not very surprised when i heard that the relationship to Eriador was over, apparantly becos Zia was going to USA to study. Guess where? Indeed... same town and the same state we have traced him/her a long time ago. This is a person who absolutely CRAVED for attention. Everything he/she did was to get attention. And he/she got exactly what he/she wanted. No wonder it must have been hard to come clean and tell the truth. Then on top of all... the relationship to Eriador. As long as u dont hurt anyone, you can do whatever you want. BUT... thats not the case with Zia. He/she took the "joke" way too far. I really feel sorry for Eriador. I can only imagine what he feels about this.

this got me really depressed, especially after drones story i actually feel sorry for "zia" feeling he has to play a role in order to be someone, and that many hours a day. probably got no friends etc. and feel sorry for drone to, even tho he doesnt admit he feels sorry about it, i know for sure that anyone who fall in love in a person, and then realizes it isnt the person he thought it was, would be really sad. i would also feel emberassed and stupid, not saying drone are, anyone would have gotten fooled by a person with such dedication to his character.

A very good ground rule is to never believe anyone you meet on the internet is really a girl until you see her on a webcam or speak to her on the phone. There are just too many pretending to be girls for whatever reason. People thought sol.alexa was really a girl too for the longest time. Anyway the account Zia has on this website is not banned. After talking to the person behind the Zia account we figured he is not suicidal (we were afraid that someone spending 3 years of his life 8 hours per day on this might be devastated by us revealing it) and still lieing about it. Zia can still post if she likes, since everyone knows the truth now it will be fun if the character stays around. Which we doubt she will, and if she does it will be with limited freedom and trigger happy admins watching her.

Wow... crazy, crazy stuff. Not sure what to make of it all exactly. I read your PM earlier this evening, but then had stuff to do, and now it's almost 3am and I'm half asleep. After reading, I jotted down some points to bring up in our MSN conversation, but haven't seen you logged in yet.

Basically I don't think we should go public with anything, at least for the near future. I don't think there's any _real_ immediate harm being done, or any definite urgency to the situation. This is something we should think about and mull over for awhile, while keeping a close eye on the current situation ("her" thread). And certainly, we should confront her about the entire thing before even thinking about doing anything public, if we'd even want to do that. I agree this is a very big deal, and we should proceed with caution.

- here's my take on it... i'd pretty much be quite opposed to "going public" with anything at least for quite awhile - there is that slim chance that many things could be true (with lies mixed in) - this person hasn't caused any harm, this is actually the only thing i've ever seen that calls attention to herself that way (we've had lots of insecure/needy users, murph, ppl commenting on rpf, and this is way different than that) - logically, how "meaningful" is a bunch a sympathy from ppl, for something completely fake? - let's say you want attention, so you posts such a story... even if you're a lunatic, how would that honestly make you feel better about anything? "oh look, they're sad for smthg that didn't even happen"
- someone "this person" has made over 3000 posts, and been around for years... this is certainly not some kind of "hoax" like some person sitting back thinking, haha, look how many ppl i'm fooling thinking i'm a girl... like some enormous elaborate joke... this could very well be a real person, thinking they're living their life out, how they want to - many transvestites out there, men who really think they're girls in mens bodies, or who think they want to be a girl - if this person is indeed a male, pretending to be a female this whole time, they have very real psychological issues, again this isn't some kind of big joke... - could be a form of schizophrenia, this person could have medically diagnosed "multiple personalities" these are real things... - real or fake, bringing this out in public would completely devastate this person... and with these kind of issues we're talking about, suicidal could be on the list as well... - I would 100% for certain, at the very least, confront this person about the entire issue, before saying anything at all in public... - she's been around ages, this isn't something that is super urgent... i see no need for us to rush into posting news or exposing her in some way... i say we let the current thread be for now... - even if she's a "he" some of these events could really happen to him, but of course it would come out as happening to "zia", could be tragic, like they don't even like living a lie, but don't know how to stop it, that it's gone on for so long... - if this is true, it's that single person who's life is a lie, not the rest of us... they're the only one truly suffering... the rest of us aren't... and i'm sure there are ppl who indeed view themselves as friends with this person... - i've never spoken (on the phone) or met in person anyone from tl.net, but i would still view many as friends, and a meaningful relationship...
- even if it comes out through private discussions that is person is not who she says she is, i'm not sure announcing it to the wider public would be the right thing to do anyway, like i said, i think this "life" this person is living could quite possibly be a very "real" thing for them... losing it would be absolutely devastating regardless... - if we do find out privately, and confront her about it directly, i think we can control any real harm from coming of it (ppl giving her money, her ever making any more elaborate lie threads to gain fake sympathy, etc). if we do find out and confront her, we'd be very clear that she isn't to do any of those things, or we will certainly expose her... not so much as a "threat" but as a way to protect our community from any intentional "scamming"... those of us who run the site and know about her "problem" can have an agreement/undstanding with her, that certain lines aren't to be crossed.... ... anyway, drifting now, that's my initial thinking, at least until i've given the whole thing some more thought and sought out some "professional" advice on how to deal with a person who has these "conditions" - no harm, not trying to steal ppls money (ppl saying stuff in the thread about money certainly wasn't brought about by her) - lets give this some more thought and approach it very carefully

After we confronted 'them' on MSN it was pretty obvious Zia wasn't going to kill himself and Manifesto opened this topic. We also waited a bit to inform (Zia told most of them himself after the confrontation) the people closely involved in some kind of relationship with Zia. We were strongly considering the option of having Zia disappear from the community in cooperation with Zia himself. It's a mix of both. But he doesn't seem to be out of control with his mental issues. Very calm and calculating individual.
I'm assuming that those people who gave "Zia" attention weren't entirely doing it because she was a girl, though it was a large part... There are a few other girls here who don't get treated the same.

After we confronted 'them' on MSN it was pretty obvious Zia wasn't going to kill himself and Manifesto opened this topic. We also waited a bit to inform (Zia told most of them himself after the confrontation) the people closely involved in some kind of relationship with Zia. We were strongly considering the option of having Zia disappear from the community in cooperation with Zia himself. However when it was obvious he was selling yet another lie to us we decided to forget about that plan.

Yeah, I know Zia was the only conspirator, but I meant all the people close to Zia and all the people who got played way harder than I did (like Eri) get my applause for contributing in some way to this incredible story (by being big suckers of course).
If Eri didn't "fall in love" with Zia, or if he didn't have such a close relationship, this story would be nowhere near as good as it is, so I applaud him even for being relatively innocent.

Eri, I mean this, I've always respected you, you've always seemed like a great person, and I both feel for you and respect you. And even though it was a while ago, coming out with this story is I'm sure... umm tough. But honestly kudos to you, I would just be too embarassed and sad to even be honest about the whole situation. If you say you're glad you had the experience then hats off to you, I would try to bury it I suspect.
Of course, the attitude we should have towards Zia is really hard to gauge. On one hand I feel like he's contributed a lot here, and even though he's a phony I think we should show some "mercy" in our attitudes about him (under the assumption that he's probably not just a joker laughing in his chair, that doesn't really make sense); then again, the whole thing is seriously weird and the leg thread was just so messed up (which is not nearly as messed up as what he did to Eri...)

I didnt know that Eriador already knew that she was a fake, thats why i never said anything. People around me knew what i knew, i told them. From what Zia always told me, s/he was born in Finland, but lived in Korea for a while, and then a few months ago, told me s/he was coming to Tennessee. I live in Knoxville, which isn't too far from Ootelwah, which is where s/he claims to currently live, which would explain why all the posts come from Tennessee.
I've had my doubts about Zia being a girl before, but I never really cared enough to pursue it.

I'm in Zia's east clan (CapN.). There were always incosistencies in "her" story, but I never really thought about it or cared. I didn't think about it mainly because of all the things Eri said, but I never really cared either because I've always felt that there should be no reason for treating guys and girls differently online. It's not like you are going to meet these people in real life.
I will almost certainly continue wearing that CapN. tag because to me it never amttered if Zia was a guy or a girl. Losing a game for the wrong reasons right before I fall asleep will cause me to sleep poorly, but Zia's story didn't.

You made your social life and feelings revolve around the internet. If there's one thing WoW has taught me, it's that voice communication answers a lot of questions. Someone claiming to be a chick? Get them on vent and talking. Unless they go all out with the voice synthesizer (never seen it pulled off), it's pretty impossible to hide your identity. The BW community is living in the ice age as far as communication is concerned. After playing WoW for almost two years, I can't even fathom how I played War2, BW, Diablo2, etc without using a microphone. It makes things so much simpler and straight forward.
On an unreleated note, guys make way too big of a deal about girls playing video games. Who cares? You should be giving people attention because you enjoy playing with them and think they're cool, not because you think they might give you some epussy. So if you expect him/her to drop his/her act and say they were wrong, lying, admit the truth, etc then you might as well give up, because they're going to keep lying as to maintain their ego/social status on the internet. I would guess it stems from a lack of attention from other people in real life ... (only plausible explanation for telling someone else online that you "loved" them ... [people with relationships are "accepted" and "cool in our society] thus boosting his social status on teamliquid).
I think the best thing to do is stop giving guy/girl attention as its just what they want ... if you track the I.P. or whatever I'm sure you'll find all kinds of drama in their thread history, they feed off this probably due to a lack of it in real life.

I still trust people online this is the only time it's fucked me over and on average trusting people makes you able to form way better relationships and make way more and better friends I mean I went down to holland alone like 3 years ago to visit naz raszi oaral and meat for 2 weeks without having met or talked on phone with any of them before it was absolutely great I've met lots of people through the net actually and well apart from this one incident it has always been really cool.. in some cases really really cool and it has definitely given me really, really good friends that I care shitloads about

But while the internet may bring people closer together in terms of knowledge and connectivity, it also pushes people farther apart because the human element is almost entirely non-existent.

That's your opinion ... I'm just going to guess that you spend a lot of time over the internet ... I do too, I used to have friends on starcraft, I have friends on certain forums.
If I like talking to them I'll even add them to my AOL buddy list and talk to them frequently, by no means though would I ever ... say fly out to meet this person on a whim, let them borrow large amounts of money, etc... because you just can't tell over the internet.
If I start talking to someone on the phone, sharing pictures, talking on AIM, and then meet them in real life, this person can become an "actual" friend of mine, I'm just saying its very easy to lie on the internet and in my opinion this whole Zia character is a "perfect example" of why I am right.

No .. I trust A LOT of people, I decide whether or not I will trust someone using the skills I've aquired in the 19 years I've been alive. This is in real life though, when you can get an idea of who they really are instead of just words on a screen. I have a few friends on starcraft who I thought were cool (I ended up chilling with exalted once), but besides that they're not really any more to me than a "starcraft friend."
I don't know, I guess its just that I don't spend that much time playing computer games anymore so I separate "online" friends I haven't met yet from "real life" friends that I hang out with consistently. If I think a friend from online is really cool based on the conversations we have then I might make an effort to meet up in real life, THEN he can become an actual friend. I guess you could say I'm selective, maybe a bit self-cenetered but that's the way I am.

i would say without question, if i met someone IRL and spent two days with them, or talked to one of my online friends for say.. a year or two that i have, i would venture to say i know my online friend much better. and uh, we're talking about 5 to 6 years here.

I can't really say a lot on this topic. I never knew "Zia" except for the odd post on this forum. I posted in the car crash thread with the token "get well soon" post like everyone else, and since "Zia" had been an established BW identity many years before I even played my first game of BW (Yes, I'm new you chumps, been around for 3ish years) so I never thought to question it.
But since I wasn't involved at all with "Zia" I guess it never really mattered/occured to me.
I will say this one thing though, and I'm not looking to be confrontational here. "Zia", stop pretending that there was more than one person involved. I know that saying there was group involvement makes this all seem like more of a joke and in a way makes you less pathetic, but it's a stupid lie to try and repair another. There is no way multiple people could keep this up in such a casual way without blowing it, or quite frankly, getting bored.

Well I think it's time I added my 2 cents....I didn't know Zia nearly as well as everybody here (never exchanged msn, never pm, only gamed twice) , but I'm pretty sure I knew her the EARLIEST, before she got on tl.net or became popular or anything.. A friend of mine had started a clan called P)x- and the next thing i know she's like co-leader or something. I never really joined P)x, but I hung out and played with them a lot. I remember "Zia" telling me about how she grew up in Korea and knew [NC]...Yellow, how she was living in Finland, but had lived in the U.S. as well, etc. and all this time she was on her own. Now right here, everything sounded absurd because for someone to grow up in an Asian culture, adopt their language, and then be able to learn Finnish and still be able to type in perfect American all while providing for yourself takes genius, but I never challenged her on any of these things really. I only made a sarcastic remark about her growing up with Yellow to which she quickly replied, "Excuse me, are you telling me how I grew up?" and after that I never really talked about it again. I mean, it was possible for "Zia" to be what she said she was, but I didn't care about suspicion because we were never close at all. Then I stopped playing bw for like a year and when i came back, she's in pG. But the interesting thing about everything was her attitude. She was trying to be, in all aspects, like Tifa from FF7. But someone who actually IS like Tifa (I know someone who actually is like her in real life) would never admit this fact. Like for instance, girls who are like Tifa don't say things like "me=Tifa" and yet, I saw her say stuff like this on posts here and online. They're strong-minded, independent; but they're not trying to BE like anybody. And then, in her recent accident thread, she said something like "I have a reputation to keep." But if she had a reputation of total bad-ass to keep would she have made a thread that longed for the sympathy of everyone in TL.net? So I decided not to respond to the accident post. Of course, I had not idea she was actually a he--what I thought was that Zia was a she, but just faking her personality on the internet.
So what do I think of all this? I think it's hilarious.....because the guy behind it has such a "boring and mundane" life that he has to pretend he's a girl to make his life more interesting.

Has anyone of you seen the movies Mulholland Drive and Vanilla Sky ? These are movies, quite similar to this situation, where a person escapes reality and goes into the idealistic world for that person. That might explain all the stuff about having a major in psychology, journalism, and sociology, having personal contact with musical and pornographic rolemodels and all the other personal experiences "Zia" has had. As most of you might have surmised these experiences are far from being randomly picked out IE being babysitted by Yellows sister. In addition to this feed from all the responses/attention from a small community consisting people not being close to similar experiences.
You achieve the dreamlike status and get addicted to it. Think of it as a fantasy world. Like a drug. 5 years is a long time, but not if you are commited, and enjoy the situation to the fullest, which seems to be the case here.
I remember seeing that picture a couple of years ago on wgt and I remember thinking wow what a fucking bizzare looking guy. I rarely talked to her except for a couple of occurances and always assumed she was a girl since the whole ordeal with eri and such. Honestly I dont see the excitement in pretending to be a girl for 5 years, I can see it being fun for a while but seriously 5 fucking years? No, to me, there is a pretending to be someone on-line, in front of perhaps a few people or a small group people, and acting in a sensible way. But then there is living out a life of another person for 5 years, in front of a community of hundreds of people. 5 years, having to remember the details of another person's life, which included such twisted events as having been raped. And do you honestly think that at this point in 'Zia's life, this '23 year old man' just thought it would be 'funny' for him to make up a story about 'Zia' being seriously injured? Actually, if you do study psychology, you don't study case studies like this, because something like this is CLEAR for ANYONE to see what problems this person has. Yes, I did study psychology, but again, it has nothing to do with this issue. You don't need a fucking psychology background to make any conclusions other than the fact that this person has serious issues, which you obviously are too thick to admit.

This was a surprise, but not a very significant one to me personally since I had nothing invested in the persona. The only comments I have regarding Zia/Adam are that no one who would do such a thing is anywhere near "normal", and that there's obviously something wrong with them and/or their life if they put in the time and effort to pull off such a hoax. It's one thing to maintain it for a few months or even a year, but for 5+ years... at the least you should be questioning how you spend your time. What was said and done to Eri in particular, however well he reacted, was a very irresponsible and cruel thing to do to a person. Zia/Adam was just fortunate that Eri is the unique individual that he is and was able to shrug off the incident the way he did.
Otherwise, I don't think it matters who or how many people who responsible for creating and maintainng the persona, nor any reasons that may be given by them. Zia/Adam is obviously a not-so-normal person who loves attention, let's just leave it at that and not continue this show for his/her pleasure. It's actually getting boring at this point.

I have an unbelievable amount of dirt (funny and repulsive) on so many people in this community, including tl.netters (and some admins), and some rather highly-regarded players. One of my friends used to pretend to be a female and "verified" it because he had a high voice (for a male) until he was 17. It was great fun. My attitude was not of denial of course, as far as Zia is concerned I passively believed that "she" was in fact a she.

You shouldn't have made significant exceptions for Zia simply because she was reportedly female. The only one that made sense was the admission into the clan (female gamers do kinda suck), sharing intimate details of your life with "her" was just plain foolishness even if she was female. But as far as I'm concerned Zia is as real as Rekrul and damn near everyone else on the internet. Most people on the internet act rather differently from how they do in real life. The assertive, foul-mouthed, ban-happy (please don't ban me for this) Rekrul could be as different from the real one as this Zia is from the pathetic male loser who created her.

Got the act as far going as to get marriage proposals from others on the internet, and they actually had a meeting and marriage planned until "she" got murdered. Why? If I posted a thread on TL.net about MMORPG "online marriages" I'd get dozens of replies correctly reasoning that the phenomenon is ridiculous and pathetic. On the other hand, few if any would find pathetic simple online friendship. Your friendships with Zia were based in large part on her being "female". The only reason it changes anything in my views is: 1) She's a liar; how do we know anything she's said is true? What we know of "Zia" is completely false. Does that not bother you at all, having found out that one of our own admins is a complete liar? and, 2) She acts like a little kid sometimes, which is often considered "cute" for a girl, but definitely not for a male adult.
