i've been waiting to find out my room/roommate information all summer, only to find out that my letter got lost in the mail. i call up the school yesterday, and find out the information. i facebook the kid, and the kid im going to spend the rest of the year with, is gay. this is DEFINITELY going to be the most memorable year of my life. | ||

Don't take this the wrong way but it reminds me of a story.....a friend of a friend had a gay roomate years ago in college...one day the guy is having unexplained problems with anal bleeding. Eventually he sets up a camera in his dorm secretly and discovers his roomate was drugging and raping him. Probably won't happen to you though. | ||

As for living in the dorms, if your college is anything like mine, I highly doubt you'll be spending more than half the nights of the week in your own dorm room anyways. | ||

Generally, gay guys touch straight guys (in "neutral" ways too) less than straight guys touch straight guys (man hug, pat on back, etc.). They're sensitive to that kind of issue and wouldn't presume. Now, you may have an extremely annoying type of homosexual to deal with, but you could just as easily have an extremely annoying straight roommate--in any case, you don't know yet. I would definitely set some rules for what goes on in the room, though. You might want to agree that the room is a no sex zone--you probably don't want to be bothered with gay sex a couple feet away while you're trying to sleep, and you can find somewhere else to have your own. That is, if you're adverse to gay sex. Anyway, I think this is going to be a lot less big or memorable of a deal than you think. | ||

 On the issue of attention from gay guys...I had a friend in the room next door (suitemate) at my hs who once did some modeling in New York (pretty good-looking). When some of my gay friends were over, they used to fawn over him, rubbing his chest hair in delight. The look on said friend's face was priceless a few times though. The first big thing is that you don't know anything about him, which is the same as it would be with any other person. Unless you want to meet him/email him/chat with him on IM, you're basically going to go in with no other indication of his personality other than that he's gay. Don't be like "oh he's gonna bring lots of girls and give me style advice." Unless you can tell from his Facebook page that he's more feminine you can't make that asumption. Maybe he's just a dude that likes to suck dick? You don't fucking know, don't go in with the presumption that he's flaming. The one thing you want to be 100% certain about is that you set the boundaries on any sexual activity whatsoever. No matter what his personality is, you must make it clear that you don't want to have sex with him, you don't want to be hit on, and that even if you're drunk or something if you have a gay experience you will regret it and feel miserable about it for the rest of your life, making dealing with your roommate nearly impossible. The other thing you obviously want to deal with is him bringing guys into your dorm. I can't really offer much advice here but if you can deal with it fine, otherwise make it known and try to make some kind of arrangement with him. Finally, unless you get an indication that he is extremely overly sensitive and militant about being homosexual, please for fucks sake do not bullshit him and act more tolerant than you are. My experience with people shows that unless your views are just totally offensive, they would rather know the truth and work with that than deal with the consequences of finding out you were bullshitting them. You're obviously willing to be tolerant so you have nothing to hide. If being tolerant isn't enough for him and he expects you to be 100% tolerant and accepting the friendship either has no chance of working out or you're going to be lieing to yourself and him for at least a year trying to make it work. Then again if he is that insane maybe it's best to not talk about it so things go smoothly, dunno. But unless you see a good reason not to don't bullshit him. If I had to choose between a crazy goth stoner kid and a mans man who sucks dick, I'd take the mans man who sucks dick every time. Just treat him like a person and you'll be fine. | ||
