Please take note: Jeff died tragically from liver failure as a result of necrotising fasciitis caused by a spider bite two years ago. Not a 'crazy lifestyle'. Please respect his memory and avoid any cheap and untrue comments about drink or drugs.
God fucking damnit. On the verge of tears right here. One of the best and biggest names in metal has passed away. Taken from the Slayer facebook page:
Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.
Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)
I don't really like metal, but I really LOVE Slayer. I'm so bummed about this. I saw them at "Monsters of Rock" in 91 and to this day never seen any band whip a few thousand people into such aggressive brutality. They never slowed down, "Mellowed Out" and rode the grunge wave. Slayer is what I imagine Hell to sound like and Jeff will be sorely missed.

Well I'm obviously not an inside man from Slayer or even a roadie or anything, but I can tell you they weren't that hardcore into drug/alcohol abuse as some of their peers. So I don't necessarily think it's fair to attribute that to insane amounts of drinking. Hell for instance Metallica when they got started used to be known as Alcoholica, and you can probably guess why. ;p
This is probably one of the biggest blows to the metal industry in a long time. I don't personally listen to it, but I know people who do and they pretty much adore/worship Slayer.

Sad news, he wasn't even that old
Only 49...fucking heartbreaking. I didn't even get to see Slayer live due to never having cash when they were in town
He joins Dime, Chuck, Burton and Dio in the Valhalla of metal.
Peter steele too IMO, but yeah. I was really lucky that I got to see them live a while ago, outside the venue there were a bunch of christians holding big signs about how we're going to hell for listening to that music.
Really like some Slayer songs, also the undisputed attitude album was good stuff. Will never understand that self destructive "rock and roll" livestyle though (I'm assuming it's that kind of liver failure). Thrash metal <3. (Didn't the Orbituary guitarist die recently as well?)
You will live on through your music. Metal has always been such a huge part of my life, and Slayer has played a massive role in that. I am truly crushed.
So sad and shocking... only 49, what a shame, it's so young. The best live act I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. Gonna be drinking with Slayer tonight I think.
RIP, i was one number away from being 666 at sizzle pie for my pizza tonight. Some dumb preppy girls behind me got it and got all weird about when the whole store was cheering for 666, alll while slayer was playing loudly in the stores speakers.
\m/ always go too young.
Worst part is he Tried to get that girl behind me to go first. forcibly. She wouldn't do it. I had no idea till i ordered and he told me.
So sad about this Slayer has been my favorite band for the past 11+ years D:
Also, could the OP please be changed? He didn't die from a drug/alcohol lifestyle, he has been unter constant treatment for a life-threatening disease. Liver failure was most likely a complication that came with it; a lot of medicine that goes through the liver... I'm no doctor, but I seriously doubt anyone who can count to two would drink himself into liver failure when he's trying to dodge death.
Dude was a genius. In his memory, here is one of his home recording demos for South of Heaven; its almost superior to the final song imo. Thrash in peace Jeff!
RIP, Jeff \m/ One of my favorite guitarists and musical inspiration, being a guitarist. I always enjoyed when his solos were on, more than Kerry's; especially in Seasons... his solos are almost sacred to me. /,,/,

I didn't say that in the OP?
But I will put it in the OP to stop people bashing him.
