Still hoping they found traces of an ancient civilization on Mars that somehow indicates terrestrial life began there.

I don't understand why you guys are still theorizing about the potential of water. Phoenix lander has already found it in liquid form.

Wikipedia has a bunch of sources saying it'll be announced during "the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, which is scheduled to take place December 3 - 7, 2012 in San Francisco".

Not really, You would have thought that evolution "basically" being proven would have disproved most religions, but it doesn't. Most people who practice these religions justify quotes from their associated texts by considering them metaphorical rather than literal.

I am quite excited to see the results.

The Abrahamic faiths (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) are unaffected by this, scripturally speaking. Obviously there are those who believe in the teachings of post-biblical holy people (Catholics, Christians from the American south), but Genesis doesn't say anything about other planets, species, etc. It says God made earth and all living things on earth and humans were made as its keepers.

If this doesn't properly address the Koran, I apologize profusely. I studied Biblical Theology in university, but I'm largely ignorant of the discrepancies between Jewish scripture and Muslim scripture (specifically the pre-Mohammed texts).

Also, to address evolution, the Bible pretty specifically says that time for God is relative (Psalm 90:4, 2 Peter 3:8) and the point of Genesis 1's 7-day account is just to teach about resting being a holy practice. Also, the creation account in Genesis 1 follows the pattern of evolution (first plants, then aquatic life, then birds, then mammals, then humans).

Christians who discount evolution are just ignorant people - there are ignorant atheists too. Ignorant Christians are just louder, unfortunately.
Eagerly awaiting Techies.

I'm pretty sure that an atheist not believing in religion for whatever reason is not quite the same as a religious person not believing in evolution. One is acknowledging that there is no concrete proof for something, while the other is refuting a process that has so much proof towards it, and no proof against it for over 150 years. Were you talking about other ways in which atheists are ignorant? Ignorant about the teachings of a particular religion?

What does this have to do with landing a science vessel on another planet : /

Whatever they found it's from soil. We already know water exists on Mars so the only thing it could be is carbon based life, likely dead.

Think we are forgetting "organic" is a loaded word if it is followed by "material" it is not life.

Also it is quite clear NASA does not have a PR person, or just doesn't care, handling this story.

Hope NASA didn't find chryssalids up there.

Besides life, what other stuff would warrant this much attention I wonder. Amino acids?

A few quick things:

It's only likely to be something of a hydrocarbon, or some form. Which everyone should expect. They've wanted to say there has been life on Mars for a few years due to the very real possibility they've seen Methane plums from satellites. ( i.e. Natural Gas) So expect something like that (and also realize they've been very specifically looking for Methane as well).

But here's the kicker: there's a damn good chance there's actually oil on Mars. The "fossil fuels" aspect to crude oil has always been more hand-waving than science. It's a theory that only slightly worked, until we found more and more oil, far deeper and in places it really shouldn't be. But that's a 20+ year argument, so that's not really new either.

Though if they do find something like a microbe, it really won't mean all that much without a full analysis back here on Earth. There's the point we've been sending probes to that planet for a while now, debris has been ejected from the Earth over the years and they've spent a while telling us that microbes from Mars could have made it to Earth years ago. They'll never be able to make any actual conclusions of the origin. Not unless they find some Thaarks.

In what way? The less fortunate believe dinosaurs are fake and the scientifically inclined understand that bible is not a scientific compendium.

Personally, I think it will be microbial life that is 'alive'. Single-cell organisms not unlike the ones that are found here on earth.

This would mean that the possibility of life on other planets isn't so far fetched if it has occurred twice in our own solar system, and that life is more common than we believe it to be right now. Our solar system has 8 planets that circle around 1 sun, with 2 planets (or three depending who you ask) in the habitable zone of the sun. Our solar system is large compared to others who's sun mostly have 1-6 planets orbiting it. Really excited to hear the upcoming news though regardless of the content.

We launched a spacecraft from earth that traveled roughly 354 million
miles (570 million kilometers) to mars (added distance of orbit). Fucking sick.

depends on what it is. if it ends up being something like e coli. we'll end up with a news story about the manhunt within NASA to find the moron who didn't wash their hands before getting back to work. might make an interesting experiment though to see if it can spread and survive.
