Quite important to remember that when a scientist working on a project and says something is "for the history books" that doesn't have to mean most normal people will agree. It could be something very minor for people outside of this kind of science.

That said, let's hope that it's something ridiculously awesome.

My bet would be solid evidence of liquid water.

Life sounds too good to be true.

If it's life (like bacteria or something) wouldn't this disprove most of the major religions? :p

CURIOUS to see what it is going to be ^^

Not really, You would have thought that evolution "basically" being proven would have disproved most religions, but it doesn't. Most people who practice these religions justify quotes from their associated texts by considering them metaphorical rather than literal.

I am quite excited to see the results.

Perhaps they found:

1. Frozen mud, would be awesome since it would be a proof for more water then just on the pole caps.

2. Gold/Gemstones in such a high ratio that it would be cost efficient to harvest it from there.

3. New elements/alloys which where created by the high background radiation. (Not a big atmosphere over there^^)

4. A huge liquid underground lake.

I really doubt that they found life.

Possibly.

The rover only took samples from a tiny part of the surface of the planet. Even if it would find a high amount of gold/gemstones, this has no bearing on how much there is in total. Besides, these are scientists that are getting excited and not jewelers.

3. New elements/alloys which where created by the high background radiation. (Not a big atmosphere over there^^)

Unlikely. We've already made elements and alloys under all kinds of weird conditions in our labs on earth. While Mars has a thinner atmosphere than Earth, it is also much further from the sun (the primary source of radiation in our neighbourhood). So the conditions on Mars aren't really that extreme.

4. A huge liquid underground lake.

Found by analysing a soil sample?

Personally, I'm guessing they found water in some form, but we'll have to wait and see.

I'd say they found life signs of some sort. Not life per se but at least a proof life existed.

That would be amazing. I wish it is one of those gateways from the Pohl sf book with spacecrafts that lead to strange places in the universe.

I hear the instrument is designed so that it's able to detect organic molecules.

So I'm betting/hoping it's evidence of that, which would be incredible.

This? If it is I would take the first flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Yeah, I speculate that they found some kinds of life traces. But the reason they're not making it public just yet is because NASA just wants to be 100% sure that their data's legit and not some kind of contamination from the earth. Would really not be good for them if they right away release an article, "LIFE ON MARS!!!111!!1," the world goes apeshit, and then like 2 weeks later they're like, "Oh soz, it was just contamination. No proof actually."
You mean I just write stuff here and other people can see it?

Remember that arsenic-based life debacle? Fossilized Martian life forms on meteorites?

it concerns organic life according to a dutch newspaper. then again, what do they know..
One time that happened and I just stopped everything, selected the offending SCV, hit Cancel, moved it over to my Barracks, made a Marine, had the Marine shoot it to death, then left the game.

I actually hope it isn't signs of active life, as then we then get into ethical territory of Colonization. As for the martian meteorite the paper has not been withdrawn so it is still up for debate...

Our scouting probe discovered a zerg fast expo.
Seems like NASA is considering cannonrushing.

It will probably be something on the lines of "we have found something that indicates traces of water/ life. It is not clear that we have found water but we believe we have found more clues proving that there might be water on mars."

It's nice that they are taking a cautious approach to this and not jumping the gun.
