Culture is a arguably a larger factor than religion, and that derives from the local situation. Religion largely gets ignored on issues where its views conflict with existing practices. Infant mortality and lack of industrialisation have a huge impact on the birthrate in impoverished rural areas. Lack of industrialisation means that more hands are needed to perform the necessary work, and more children is the easiest and cheapest way to get that. High infant mortality means that more babies are needed to 'guarantee' enough will survive. The high birth rate needed to ensure the short term survival of individual families then worsens the problems which lead to it. Vicious cycle. | ||
