I seem to procrastinate alot and it occured to me that TeamLiquid had some mightly scholarly people. How is it that you DONT procrastinate... i do it soo much and i get like no sleep. Whenever i feel like doing my school work i somehow zone out and go on the computer and do stuff (like TeamLiquid w00t) or just loaf around doing nothing.
I'll throw in a question i want answered...
Since procrastination is the cause of not doing (rather than merely the lack of action), simply doing that which is being procrastinated may not be psychologically possible while the mental obstacle or technical problem causing the procrastination is in place. Right? Anybody have good tips that you can use to get over these mental obsacles?

I just did an experiment for two weeks. I made sure I got everything done as soon as possible, with no procrastination. Afterwards, I still found I had time to fuck around, and that time was much more pleasurable because I didnt have the stress of knowing I needed to do something. So, I just continued.
In summary:
Enjoyable fucking around > Stress and lack of sleep.
Also, I found the quality of my work was better.

i think rekrul should ban you..
thanks
look.. its simple.. procrastination is a result of a bad childhood with no discipline, no respect and no accountability.. realize that your parents did not do the right job.. once you figure that out.. do things by your self and change your friggin life style.. i mean you already know you procrastinate.. so define what is procrastination and do the opposite!
so easy eh?
|
|
i tried manifesto7's experiment too, except i found that i still had to slack off just to get things done by the deadline because the amount of assigned work is such that you can work on it indefinitely and my grades are the same regardless of the quality of work because my college is a piece of shit.
so like, if i do it the day before, at least i don't spend as much time on it for my B+. if i spend the whole week reading the assignments and shit it doesn't matter anyways and my profs can't tell the difference.
|
|
mitsy thats totally stupid, if your teachers dont really give a flying fuck about the assignment quality, just do a crappy assignment as soon as possible, you will get the same grade plus a relaxed free time with nothing to do later.
i procastrinate a lot, but atleast i dont bullshit myself like you are doing to justify yourself.
|
its harder to do such a shitty job IMO unless its forced by a deadline + procrastination combo. if i try to do things ahead of time i just dont have the balls to produce such shitty work and try to pass it off

That being said, I spent 5 years at university doing essays on the last possible day. By the last year, it was so bad that I would start an essay at 6am the day it was due to hand it in by 4pm. Mitsy is right, in the end I still got the same B+ I would have if I had done it the week before. (Seriously I wrote 4500 words in 12 hours, it was so clutch)
However, I find that my attitude totally changed once I started working on something I consider my career. I get everything done miles ahead of time... maybe it is the whole paycheaque thing I dont know.
|
|
I've always procrastinated... I don't really know anyone that doesn't :-/.
|
I always procrastinate and I find myself doing much better work during crunch time. Whenever I put in the effort to get things done early I find myself doing shittier work probably because I know I can go back and edit it but I never do. If I do it the last minute I concentrate much more on the task at hand and therefore do much better. My GPA has steadily gone up with the amount of procrastination I do. I used to be a non procrastinator in 10th grade with a 3.7 GPA. Now I'm a 12th grade procrastinator with 3.9 GPA.
On a side note, I'm currently doing my Early Action University of Chicago essay (the app is due Nov 1st which is abut 3 and 1/2 hours away). Procrastinating on a life making or breaking essay feels great.
|
Procrastination really only tends to happen on things that you'll have trouble doing in the first place, so the time frame you do them doesn't really matter. The point brought up earlier is correct though, in the sense that I can decide to do a paper in 4 hours instead of bullshitting with my dorm mates, and then get more sleep, and have a better quality of life in the time i do have to have fun, as oppose to hanging out tired and groggy all the time from procrastinating until midnight to start assignments.

so easy eh? Bullshit. I was brought up well, decently disciplined, respectful to everyone and I held my self accountable for everything. I procrastinate like there's no tomorrow. Just this morning I pulled an oral presentation out of my ass that was supposed to be done two weeks prior. I mean, my grades hardly suffer, but like Manifesto said, it's stressful sometimes.
|
its sad tho, i wanted to take my work seriously this semester. these are things i would like to make my career, but the schedule really doesn't allow me to take anything seriously and the grading doesn't reward it at all. it would be its own reward except we work about 24 times too quickly to get any of the depth that would matter.

in sweden we have a project at school which we are expected to work with for 100h.. i did it at the last night, just got it printed in time before i had to go back to school again and hand it in. i got the top grade too, procrawhatever owns i dont think ive ever written something for school before the last day

I love this thread! May or may not have anything to do with the fact that I am procrastinating as I write this response.

i have procrastination problems too but i also seem to overcome them most of the time. To get work done i pretty much force myself to go somewhere where i'm isolated (like the library) from distractions like my computer, tv, and even leave my cell phone at home for a couple of hours. The only thing i have with me are my assignments and some coffee. I dont know if it works for u but i get some work done by trying to set a few hours during the week between work and classes to try to do this
|
ill give you a response tommorrow...
|
Last year I tried to change my habits as well, and I got everything done as soon as it was given, and even went as far as to revise everything daily. Unfortunately, my urge to do other things (such as play starcraft) were far greater than those to get everything done early, and I gradually slipped back into procrastinating until the night before.

I procrastinate similarly and I always find that I can get away with doing it while maintaining a high grade, but everyone keeps saying that you can't pull that bullshit off in college (I am especially trying to go to an Ivy so I guess this holds more true) so I am trying to at least get some kind of work ethic together.
With that said, I haven't been succeeding.

I self-expirimented it -.-

Octopuss, I'm experimenting with that right now.
Whats even funnier is that I have 13 hours of core courses, and 2 1 hour courses designed to help "first year students"(freshman) study better and adjust to college life. The problem is that I'm trying to focus on my other core classes work, and I keep getting dragged down by the work assigned from the other 2 classes, which is basically telling me to do the fucking work in my other classes(which I would be doing anyway). And of course, since I procrastinate, I don't have time for ALL the work to get done(I do, but not with the time frame I give myself by procrastinating).

i know breaking my computer would eliminate most of the cause of procastination.. however... i cant

If I didn't have an Internet connection my productivity would skyrocket.
I've found that in many of my classes were the work is assigned far in advance that all the material on the assignment isn't even covered until a few days before it's due anyway.

I love how no matter what people bitch about their current situation. My friends and I were just talking about this. You do not know how much I wish it was still high school, and even freshman year of college where I didn't have to do shit. Now I am a senior taking 20 hours of all upper level courses with a messed up knee (strain/torn miniscus, happened during FLAG football of all things) trying to get good grades for law school, or good job. I'm sure law school/real world is more hellish then this, and I'm sure dealing w/ kids/wife and saving for their future/your retirement is worse then that. I guess if there is a message in this, it is... Procrastinate while you still can????????????
|
I procrastinated sooo much in middle school (like doing major projects that take a week to do on the last day, and finishing all the regular homework in homeroom), yet my grade point averages for 8th grade were (and I'm being serious about this, these are my actual GPAs, no bullshitting) 4.5 1st quarter, 4.5 2nd quarter, 4.5 3rd quarter, and 4.433 4th quarter. I studied in class on the day of tests and quizzes, and once, I skipped the first period (42 minutes) of my day to write a 3 page essay and got a 75 out of 75 on it. Yeah, I love bragging; it makes my self-esteem higher.
Anyways, procrastination is a really bad habit, and I need to stop doing it. I agree with what manifesto said about doing your work as soon as you get it so you get lots of free time without worrying about projects and essays, but it's so hard to overcome the urge to just play, and do work at the last possible moment. I really need to stop.
Oh yeah, we need one of these:
|
in my physics class i sat around and did nothing but talk to my friends all class and then i got a 110 on the final. in calculus i did the same thing, but payed attention in the last month and got a 5 on the calculus ap test. i slept in my english class all of last year, and i got a 5 on the ap language test. i drew cartoons and twirling around my pencil and read fiction during my history class, and i got a 4 on the ap us history test
if you are somewhat intelligent you dont need to really do anything to do well in high school. i procrastinate to the point where i get so close to the deadline where i say im tired and just dont do it, and ill probably have trouble with that in college. i dont really care though, school is for people who want to be successful

Procrastination is not that bad actually. I find myself working MUCH MORE efficiently under pressure (ie. the night before). However, you have to know your limits: eg iIf an assignment is designed to be completed in five days, do it two days before it is due, rather than the night before.
And I also find that the time you waste while procrastinating is more pleasurable than the "regular time" before you know you should be doing something productive, but you aren't.

this weekend and week i am the perfect example of fucking up thx to procrastination.
i had a math term paper due today, halloween, and so saturday i was like "eh. i can get it done." and rather than do the paper, i took advantage of an invitation to go on sort of a double date hoping i can finally seal the deal with this chick ive been trying to get with for a week or two. (which btw worked. so even though i totally fucked myself paper wise, i still got SOMETHING done.) sooo there i am getting home 2 am, worked on my paper a very little, went to sleep. then i got up at six to go to work at seven and work till three. got home. K time to get to work. or so you'd think. nah. i fuck around for two hours. now its five. NOW i work. and talk. and watch tv. im doing everything i can to not write this paper. so now its 9 pm sunday night. and i realize im truly, TRULY fucked. so im up till midnight, (completely fucking exhausted. four hours sleep, eight hours work, plus when i got off work i talked to that girl on the phone for an hour. and i hate the phone. i was wrecked) so i went to bed, slept in, stayed home from school to write this paper. so all day passes by and ive written how much? only one more page. great. now my paper is late. so there i was around 5pm halloween still writing my paper. work @ 7pm this time. sooooo.. when its time to go to work, i have about 3 pages written. fucking wonderful. i go to work.
then i get home. 11pm. the first time all weekend ive buckled down to work when i should have. and the paper was already late. so there i am working feverishly till about an hour ago.
is my paper done? FUCK NO LOL
and here i am. posting on Tl net. calculus book in lap still working on my term paper due yesterday and hoping to god i can finish it for tomorrow.
wish me luck.
i dont know if this is irony, but its damn close. writing a post on procrastination while procrastinating. wonderful thing.

I'm the master of procrastination 8D But it's because I always start doing something else and forget the "important" thing I was supposed to do ;o

do it early if you want no stress, but if your lazy i reccomend you leave it till the last minute possible and then do it.
|
if you are studying, then it might not be a good idea to leave everything to the last minute. The stuff you've learned during that rush would only be registered with your short memory and a few weeks later, you won't remember a thing.

i think the problem is increased in our time with the help of technology. things like television and internet are instant gratification, instantly not feel alone, feel worth, feel involved.
when you go do school work its usually a solitary endevour that has none of those advantages. and it isn't instant gratification. in fact, the way many schools are, it is hardly gratification at all. like i said earlier, most of my profs i've had don't give a shit and grade everyone randomly. doing the work for real is excessive and doesn't make a difference to anyone except yourself. and if its a shitty, bs class, like over half of them, then its not even a difference to you. trying to do the work for real will really just hurt your grade.
so anyways, we can partially blame this sort of instant-gratification sickness. it's like once kids have had candy, sometimes raw vegetables just aren't as good as they probably should be. when learning is forced on you and the bureacracy has decayed to the point that most of it isn't learning, it's like a "well this is good for me" with very little psychological weight vs feeling with people in a product that's designed to make you feel good in many important ways (tv, etc.). education is hardly designed at all in comparison and is trying to get by solely with the moral appeal.

To answer the question of how not to procrastinate. Put all your assignments and books in your bag and lock yourself in the library for 5 hours.

I found myself procrastinating a lot the first two years of high school. This year I have totally 'given up'. I make my papers and that's it. And I do it the day before, if not the same day, I have to turn it in. As Mitsy has noted, the teachers don't give a shit.'. I still get good grades for a paper I made the day before. I am only in school because I have to be 'selfstudying' if I don't.
Selfstudying means you have to study at home and you only come to school for exams. Examination requirements is much more demanding though. ----
Today we had this math test (multiple choice), where no grades were given. It was a competition where it was possible to advance (no one want to (: ). I random ticked the choices and slept the rest of the test (we were not allowed to leave) :D Not procrastinating, but something familiar

as someone touched on - don't work on your computer at home where you can chat on MSN, listen to music, and just generally dick around...
if you want to get something done, go to your school library or something
i procrastinate myself pretty bad sometimes... i usually start something a few days before (not night before) but don't really accomplish much, then i blow through the last 80% of it the night before... 80% average last year not too bad... (first year university)
last year i never used the library, now i go there on my off-periods (i only have 10 hours of school a week :/ ) and i can accomplish a lot in an hour...

hmm.. procrastination.. damn, im writing a math test tomorrow, wow thats gonna be one fucked up grade

im king of procrastination

haha gene in high school we were PROS at deadline dodging
my favorite trick was always saving the document onto a diskette, then holding up a magnet to it and telling the teacher your printer is broken so you brought it on diskette, then she puts it in her computer, oh noes disk got corrupted T.T i guess i'll save and bring it again tomorrow >
or writing a computer program that takes random letters of a rough draft and sends the ASCII value into the random character range, thus rendering it unreadable but clearly showing some semblance of the english language
sometimes i swear we put more effort into dodging the deadline than writing the paper would have taken. it was almost an art form for us

I didn't do shit in Highschool but got the best grades of my year. It didn't work out like that in university. Some subjects that required 200hr really did require 200 freakin hours (1500 pages to read and none was redundant etc.). Pwnd the classes that only took a few key points to undertsnd the whole subject. But flunked the boring, grinding theories. At work I dont procasthethig# i'm stuck there from 8-17hr so why not get it done.
|
I procrastinate in college. It's working out ok but the stress does get to you sometimes. Still, a lot of work I finish and turn in a product I am honestly not willing to support.. ie - i put out shit. The grades are still there, I get C's and B's but on anything I give half a fuckin effort on, I am usually pretty sad if I don't make an A -_-;; But I honestly do believe I am a fuckin prodigy... Yes, egotistical too, but it's ok if it's true.

I wish I could find a way to not procrastinate. So far, the only way for me to not is simply not being in school, which is pretty nice, to be honest. I just lack the motivation to get things done early. Things are normally going on in that week or two period in which I have to do things, and I put pleasure before work in most cases. If I begin to work on something, I normally space out for five hours and don't get anything done. Doing it at the last minute really forces me to focus on the project, thus I can actually complete it.
I once wrote a paper (2 1/2 pages, not sure on word count) 15 minutes before my next class started, and I was the only person in the class to get an A. I think I got a 97% on it. Having things like that happen just further demotivate me from starting early. I guess when I finally fail due to procrastination I'll stop procrastinating so much, and until then, I'll deal with the worry and such the last week before something is due.

I dont procrastinate, but the way things work out, I almost never have to actually sit down and study at my desk, or do homework etc... All through high school and now into 2nd year university, I have had less work than my sister two years younger than me...
So here's a tip from me to make the work load easier -- Make time. When you're sitting on the bus going home, when you're waiting for class to start, when you're in between games in starcraft - Just study a little, or do some homework. I mean, maybe you'd rather sleep on the bus... But then, compare sleeping on the bus to playing games at home. Which would you rather do? Basically, try to minimize the amount of time that you're just sitting down waiting for something. That way when you can actually do things (like play games, chat, go out), your homework is already 20%, 50% or even completely finished.
For example, I take Japanese, and we have vocabulary tests every other class. While at work I have a list of the vocabulary in my pocket and whenever I'm not busy, I pull it out and just repeat a few words at a time. By the end of the night I've finished my studying for my exam, and I technically haven't used any of my time to do it (since I did it in my 'working time').
Cheers~
