Congratulations on reaching this thread. In the rare event that you are in grandmasters league, have a scorching hot girlfriend, and somehow avoided the terrible stench of being a gamer, please refrain from telling us about it. The 10 pages of people informing us that they do, in fact, have sex should provide enough of a counterexample to any non-believers.
Hey Tl folk, no I dont want to say bad things about gamers, and no I dont want to start a discussion about gamer predjudieces. I want to present an article about the Gc2011 shot by RTL 2 a big german television company. (in german, maybe some1 can translate it) (english subtitels) Thanks to Drg for making this Basicly what there are saying is : - Gamers smell - They dont have girlfriends - They are addicted to games and because of that dont care how they look -(insert any gamer predjudice) Whats your oppinion about that? For me, im pretty offend by that arcticle and think, we should do something against it. Do responses, show em how heterogen the gamingcommunity is. For all you fellow german gamers out there, you can help by follow what this guy is offering : (also in german) I will spread the word in every german gaming community and hope they all will respond. Feel free to leave a comment. Greetings, BeWat3r p.s pardon my bad english, I hope you can understand what im trying to say :-)
edit : Im really suprised how many people just dont care. For me, it isnt that they talk shit about people they have no idea of, it is the way they do. We all want gaming to grow, and gain reputition in mainstream society. This wont happen, if everyone who feels like it, can make some bad news and get away with it, and nothing happens.
TV is a media from the last century. They only try to fullfill their program with things for unemployed, lazy dumbasses. No1 in this century would ever believe it. I know 1 girl in my classes (12th grade - 120 students) that doesnt play games once a day or so.
People only get offended when a comment hits too close to home. While it certainly doesn't apply to everyone, I'm sure we can all think of many examples where her description is spot-on.
its just the way bad/dumb tv shows work, the likes of which are hosted regularly on that particular tv station named RTL. you point at something that is seen as something out of the ordinary and make it seem unusual/freaky and basically preform opinions for the people watching it. its the epitome of stupidity because the broadcast is only watched by people that have already formed their own opinions about gamers and what the show does is enhancing and supporting their views. really, anybody in their right mind should just ignore it and put it off as the laughable and pathetic piece of s*** this is.
RTL / Explosiv is as low as german television can get. There's no need to take any part of this serious over overreact to it, as provoking is all they want to do (and apparently and to a certain degree, they're already successful with it).
First of all your english is excellent, even though I'm not a native speaker Prejudices as such will continue for a bit longer, since right now only the younger generation is into gaming, older people still see it as a waste of time and propagate these stereotypes to their offspring who aren't gamers. I think the best way to combat these prejudices is simply living well and not get too offended by the ignorance of others. I myself was a gamer since being a small child, and will continue to be a gamer for the forseeable future. Also, gaming peaked my interest in IT, I'm currently finishing CS at university, so from where I'm standing, games were not a detriment, but helped shape who I am today. I have a girlfriend and only stink beacuse the weather is so hot right now (a joke of course :D).
I'm much more likely to be unshaven/look freakish when I'm studying for an exam than when I've finally got time to play some games. I think they should make a show about the disgusting university students and their habits during exam periods instead...

no shit, that's why things get sterotyped. imagine if it was the same steroetyping OP but titled "Black people sell drugs and don't have time for school." same type of ignorance
Meh, i'd imagine a lot of it is true. The SC2 professionals do a good job at disproving those prejudices, lets just leave it to them to "represent" our community.
If what they are saying offends you, just go out your way to prove them wrong.
Even if it is just about the pros its still pretty wrong: Incontrol, Tyler, idrA and im sure there are more have pretty attractive significant others. This video was probably made by the same people who blame shooting sprees on the game of counterstrike or something...
It's just trash journalism at its finest. Some time ago some American journalist criticized Comicon goers for not doing enough to help the poor or something.
Honestly, we need real research on the cognitive benefits that playing games can provide. I would love to compare frequent TV watchers to frequent gamers and see how much they develop cognitively in a year.

Honestly, when I went to MLG Anaheim, I was disgusted at the lack of deodorant the general audience seemed to have. Like seriously, I stopped walking by the seats because of it. So, yeah, I'd say I can understand their opinion on this.

Prohably, but they often think our livestyle is bad and that we should not play and so on. No doubt that some statements are often true, just they way it´s presented is totally wrong.
My biggest Concern is, that they said nothing about what Gamescom is about, they portrayed it wrong in all aspects. The only thing they delivered is that all of it is a waste if Life and Gaming makes you a bad person,
Anyway this article is obviously made up in the sense that they chose the person to portrayed them as bad it could be.

Well .. the sad thing is, RTL would really do that
Hmm, there might be some truth to it though. I know I've certainly had quite a few LAN parties (like once every two weekends for a few years in high school) where three or four friends stayed over for a few days, and the parties were never very hygienic. If your main source of entertainment is outside your room, you are forced to meet a minimum standard of hygiene. Similarly, if like many serious computer users you can get 90% of your entertainment (games/movies/shows/books/music) from your computer it becomes much easier to become slightly asocial.
That said, the gaming population is quickly becoming so large that such generalizations become useless. In the 1950s when few people drove cars, you could make some pretty good generalizations regarding car drivers (wealthy, probably well educated, white collar occupation, etc). Today, knowing that someone drives a car tells you very little about them. I would guess gaming is almost the same.
EDIT: Not to say that that video isn't completely ridiculous, haha. Half the things they point out can be found at any convention in the world, not just Gamescon.
I have watched more German television in my life, when I was younger, than Croatian television and I can tell you for a fact that RTL is the rock bottom of bad TV and only those rigged talk show series can top it as far as stupidity goes. These gamer stereotypes may be true to some extent but i don't see the reason why you would have to make a 20 minute special about how bad their social skills are. I have noticed one thing though, for some reason the media in Germany seem to have some kind of agenda against video games and the communitys that surround them.I remember every time something happens, violence in schools, street fights,murders,..;there's always a tv station that manages to find the guys hard drive information and that he had CS,Quake,CoD or something like that installed on his computer.I know that its not only in Germany that media does these kind of things, but man the amount of German late night/round table talk show I have watched regarding violence in games is not even funny. The worst part about it is that they,if even, rarely invite someone with a different perspective and if they do,he doesn't even get to talk much because right off the bat he notices that he can't even begin to explain to these people why shooting of a guys virtual head is fun.
Can't believe this stereotype still exists. Gaming is very mainstream, it's hard to find someone who has never touched a game be it in an arcade to a home console to world of Warcraft. How annoying, Stop forgetting your deodorant fellow gamers.
Judging from the what information the OP had given (i don't understand German) it seems that the article assumes that ALL gamers are boys. Someone should show them TLO and White-Ra.
Really disheartening considering that across the Baltic sea is Sweden who had been accepting programing
Germans on reddit already said that only dumbfucks actually watch that network, and they intentionally leave out information or find only information that supports their agenda.
lol, I haven't seen something as bad as this since the Frontal 21 killing spree Counter-Strike reports.
It's RTL-Group, they even have gaming shows on some of their channels and then just cater to their audience, Explosiv is and always has been crap for unemployed fools. It comes on in the middle of the day during the week, who do you expect to watch that? Nobody smart enough to get hired, as harsh as that may sound.
On August 25 2011 01:49 mastergriggy wrote: Definitely not the first time a TV station has said something incredibly stupid just to gain viewers/popularity.
Well you gotta know that RTL is just stupid and the majority of the programs that are broadcasted there are not more worth than a head-shaking.
That being said here is another interview with the blonde girl who claimed in the first video how gamers would never shower and don't pay attention to their appearance....
In this video she is asked about her opinion on the closing of the trainline between Berlin - New York and she says that she thinks that it's unfortunate :D.... I think that shows obviously how serious we should take any opinions coming from this direction
Nobody should take anything that is affiliated with RTL (including NTV) seriously, but apart from wii playing housewives, the stereotype of the awkward gamer is a stereotype for a reason. ^^
well i don't care about biased bashing, we all do it from time to time, but wtf that girl was paid by gamescom to advertise the games... i would sue and or deny payment to this bitch Oo.
Thank you for opening this thread. I was about to make one myself as i saw this footag just hours ago. A point you should mention is the introduction of the "article". Basically (not word by word translation) she says: "If aliens arrive on earth, they will probably find great friends at this event. We know that at the Gamescom, the biggest european games fair, it's about virtual gaming worlds, nevertheless, there are many really weird figures visiting. Steffi XXX Thomas XXX Tim XX tried to see through (i hope this correct, atleast leo says so) these people.
I really think this video is the worst bs I have ever seen by RTL. The sad thing is, they're second channel RTL2 made a good article about the gamescom with an interview SockE which he posted on his facebook (i even think on TL) which didn't offend any gamer in any possible way.
On August 25 2011 01:39 BeWat3r wrote: RTL 2 a big german television company.
Just to be clear, the article in question was produced and aired by RTL, not RTL2. RTL2 did daily reports about Gamescom is quite a positive way, i.e. this Socke interview. Nonetheless, both belong to the RTL group (as you can tell by their name) and are about the trashiest networks and publishers around in Germany.
I use deodorant and shower every day, so I don't smell. I also have a really hot girlfriend with a nice pair. I will admit I'm addicted to games, and I usually don't care much about how I look. Oh well, they did get 1 out of those 3.

It's not ignorance. If a stereotype is applicable to a majority of a group then it is a valid stereotype. I would personally think that at least one of those is applicable to a majority of gamers. And I mean true gamers, not sad casuals who play a game on their phone when waiting for a bus.

are you f**king kidding me? this report is disgustinly one-sided and offending. there might be a grain of truth somewhere in between all the insults and stereotypes thrown around there, but it's plain obvious how this report tried to cater to all the bad prejudices people have about gamers as the typical "ugly basement kiddy".
and what the blond chic was saying was quite stupid, almost embarrassing for someone who is a university student.
btw did the blond chic remind anyone else of lindsey sporecrawler?... somehow i have this ugly suspicion like what the blond girl in this report was expressing is also what lindsey truly thinks about gamers.

That program is not news but entirely entertainment. And the usual RTL news at prime time is pretty bad but certainly can't be 10 times worse than FOX news. And RTL has the highest viewing figures and is airing stuff like the German version of "American Idol" and stuff like that - so it's not only for "dumbfucks" but for ordinary viewers who like that kind of entertainment.

It's a stereotype yeah but what Daigomi said is pretty much spot on. Maybe back in the day most computer geeks were what you would see in old movies; kinda ugly, smell bad, either real skinny or real fat, single. But in today's world there are so many gamers that a stereotype is pretty hard to come by. You still have the people I described above but when I went to MLG Columbus there were so many people that you would look at and everyone has seen someone and thought to themselves "Wow I would never of assumed that guy/girl was really big into video games."
Living by old and outdated stereotypes is pretty stupid (again, Daigomi's car example) but I can't help but feel like this is just something to get them more attention which it will so kudos to them.

I never bothered trying to get a girlfriend, and if I did I would probably have a lot less time to do the things I like.. Makes no sense.
As you say, it could be said about anyone, but it's more likely to be true for some people than for others.
Hypothetical situation, you have two teenagers Jack and Sam. Jack's favourite way to spend his weekend is to go to the movies with his friends, hang out at some cafe, maybe do sport. Sam's favourite way to spend his weekend is to invite a few friends over, play games till 4AM, wake-up at 1PM and play some more games. Which of these two teenagers are most likely to take a regular bath? Also, which one would be the most likely to get a girlfriend or care about personal grooming?
Like I said in my previous post, the gamer stereotype is becoming weaker as the number of people who game gets bigger, but there's a reason why it exists. Not that I think it's all bad. Personally, what Jack does over the weekend sounds shit-boring to me, and to be honest I don't care too much if I live like a slob for short periods of time. When you interact socially you should put effort in to make yourself socially presentable, but if you're relaxing at home or with some close friends, it's not that big a deal. Still, that's what leads to the stereotype

Try visiting some hyped and "socially approved" summer music festival and do a hygiene check on the people there. These RTL scum would then gladly spend more time around gamers, typically silent and innocent folk.
Also, they imply gamers don't have a life? I do have one and I play a lot, thank you very much. In my opinion, those who get drunk as a skunk every weekend and do zero intellectual activity during the rest of the week don't. Obviously the hostess wasn't jealous to the nerds' intelligence there, but the people in that crowd will make a good portion of tomorrow's professors, programmers and scientists.
It's true though, with less and less gamers actually using their screens to watch television these guys have a certain interest in keeping some of their demographic opposed to games and gamers. RTL is just facing a slow and steady decline they can't stop.
I remember 3Sat and ARTE running nice pieces about gamers in general as well as progaming, even calling some games art. That's really something here.

Sorry miss Laura de Silva, you're not hot enough to pass judgement to other people. Also even if you were just don't; you clearly don't know what you're on about.
Im not really offended because that is the popular belief by most people and its just them being closed minded. Also I have met many gamers that fallow the type . But myself I was in a top 100 world (Titan US) raiding guild during BC in WoW. I am currently diamond league in SC2 and I have had a girl friend for 4+ years and I shower daily :D I also exercise 3-4 days a week.
I do however wish that people would stop spreading this kind of garbage because anyone that has a passion for games instantly gets this label and people spreading it with mass media in this way is not good.

Bolded for emphasis.
The thing I don't get about that is that this is not a phenomen that appeared with gaming. I don't know anyone(women included) who makes the effort to be clean, well-groomed and well-dressed when alone or with friends at home.

Well our biggest daily news-paper does this. But austria is like "The Redneck South" of the german speaking world.
The complete idiocy of someone who makes statements like that on TV is what's offensive to me. Like any stereotype, you could confirm them in some cases, and be totally wrong in others. If it were actually true then I suppose the smelling bad part would be something to complain about, but I don't know how often that actually applies. It doesn't apply to me, fore I shower every time I leave the house and could only be called "smelly" by someone who broke into my house at an unlucky time. But I don't know if it's truly anyone else's business. I suppose it affects them a little bit if you're trapped in some small room, but it still seems pretty indirect.
And while I know the stereotype that gamers "don't have time for girls" is also incorrect in plenty of cases, I find it much more disturbing when people actually value that for others. It exceeds the primal ignorance of insulting someone for not being able to get a girlfriend, and goes so far as to insult someone because they don't want a girlfriend. It seems that insulting someone because they can't get a girlfriend when they want one is nothing compared to what an embarrassment to the human intellect these individuals have mustered.
I'm a gamer, I smell fine, but I've been hopelessly addicted to various games over my life, and only really leave my house to work/ work out. Never so much as touched a girl in any meaningful way. Got plenty of gamer friends who are nothing like me though.

Still, that's what leads to the stereotype

Oh, and they got 1/3 right with me, too. SC2 is too good, fucking addictive. Dunno about the rest but I took like 4 showers today, thanks heat wave^^
Good to see you fight those stereotypes!
You're right, But the way I 'like' to see it as is: Even if someone leaves the house/interacts with others more, I don't think that they will be guaranteed to shower more or less than anyone else. I shower whenever I feel as if I'm getting dirty or will start smelling bad, but I suppose other people may not do that... which I suppose would make sense. It's still silly though IMO.
I'd consider myself to be a huge BW/SC2 addict, but whenever I have to leave to go to work, school, or hang with friends (off the internet, lol), I always make sure I don't leave dirty or smelling like crap. I'd like to think most people make this effort (no matter how nerdy they are), but I guess I was wrong.
basically, Socke is the German guy and it's just all positive stuff, citing how it's basically a sport although not officially recognized as such in Germany (because there's no movement) and the argument that it's a mental sport where fingers have to be acrobatically fast, citing Socke's high APM compared to casual players.
Really insulting report, totally uncalled for and just discriminating us. For everyone who doesnt understand german: In the beginning they ask: whats wrong in this picture? Is it either the guys pink hair, the beer in his hand, or the fact that they are ,,armed,,? Suggesting that every gamer, is a socially awkward loser and potential serial killer. They proceed to interview people by asking them really manipulative questions, e.g. the kid at 2:15 with the orange hat (do you have a girlfriend?... why not?). Ofc they picked those ppl to fit the stereotypes. To top it all of they save the best for last and have a wannabe model, who btw is ugly as hell imo, to judge those people. She gets really insulting, like those ppl look like they dont use the bathroom, they reek, they are addicted to games so they dont have time to take care of themselves...
Oh nice to see this thread. I did think about opening one myself about it yesterday =) Since there are thousands already contacting RTL and the ~mediacontrol~ "Medienanstalten", RTL tries to get rid of all videos showing parts of their show, like on Youtube and popular communities. on a Youtube video, which was deleted, over 2000 people commented in two hours yesterday(over 4k dislikes).
arcitles can be found on about every german community like MTVs gameone.de or gamona.de, explaining that this show violated laws.
I completely agree with Budi(gameone) and I'm sad this TV station is so successful. It shows our education and moral system doesnt take care of many people who enjoy this diffaming, racist and in general antisocial program =(
RTL, do they, by any chance, have a connection with the Dutch RTL? Because if they do, I already know the quality of their programs if you what I mean, "hehehehe".

Honestly i think this stereotype fits a lot of gamers. Especially wow/rpg players ive only knows 1 guy in my whole life who is an avid wow player that isn't fat. The rest fit this description to a tee. SC players for some reason don't seem to fit this description so much.
The thing I dislike most about the way that those people are interviewed is that the interviewer seems to expect the interviewee to 'excuse/explain/apologize' for their lifestyles (and I don't understand German well enough but it seems the interviewees actually do this in some cases - don't!).
Stereotypers gon stereotype. Sure stereotypes are based in reality but the people who believe it are ignorant choosing only to focus on the negative stereotypes instead of the big picture of reality.
The article doesn't bug me because honestly anybody who believes that I wouldn't want to be associated with anyways.

As gamer isn't officially determined I don't care what people say gamer is. When you put people in categories it will always have flaws, even if it wasn't this rediculous. People will anyway have shitty ideas and utopias etc.
I am person who is good at video games and play them as my main hobby that's it. =) Stuff like this would make me not to claim myself as a 'gamer' because none of those things fit me so...?
e:stereotypes suck, describes usually minor amount of people and generally shouldn't be used. Sure there's places for them (like jokes), and there is places where they will be used even if it's retarded (job market).

RTL stands for Radio Television Luxembourg, so yeah im pretty positive its the same RTL in the Netherlands. I know that they have channels in Italy too.
Also you can stereotype any group of people no matter what they do or who they are. It's easy, just focus on the most politically incorrect part of their lives and say it's all they do.

I wonder, does anyone actually take this television network seriously? I game, but I use deodorant (everyone should IMO), take showers on a regular basis, and I am fairly good with competitive sports.

But that's exactly their point! It's because you are a gamernot a total idiot and are socially withdrawn. Be more outgoing, make more friends, like this beautiful blonde model who is going out of her way to help other people understand gamers better, who is a role model for every aspiring reputable citizen. (disclaimer: sarcasm)
To all the people defending this & other broad generalizations with the reason that they must be somewhat true and based in reality because they wouldn't exist otherwise I want to point out that the line of good taste and of what is moral is crossed whenever a stereotype is consulted over the actual reality of the situation, i.e. when you start to take stereotypes seriously instead of just for what they are: stereotypes, applicable to some, not to others, generally true for a population, but not applicable to any individual up front, unless you want to be superficial.
I used to play a lot of warhammer. The local games store I went to had a big magic the gathering crowd. The kids/adults who made up the bulk of the magic players ABSOLUTELY fit these stereotypes in every way, shape, and form. They stank. Didn't smell, they STANK. The store was nigh uninhabitable on Thursdays because of the MTG tournaments.
Now obviously there were exceptions. Some of the guys there were plenty normal looking, some would have their girlfriends swing by with them. Some were married, and some of them didn't seem to give me any shit when they lost to a girl, (though they'd still heckle each other about it). But a lot of the guys there were absolutely everything you hear in that video. Don't even get me started on what the one bathroom there looked like.

For someone being so rude, I'd hope for a more intelligent response. It is offensive. It can't be much else to someone calls themself a, "Gamer." He's not saying that it shouldn't be aired, he's asking what the necessity was for false, prejudice propaganda against a harmless minority. Was there a necessity to insult gamers? A reason? Don't be an asshole.

i game (usually at nite after work), and my wife constantly bitches about me smelling bad. its not because i game, its because i'm a chef and constantly smell like food.

2) i have a career other than playing video games.

so there are hunderes of people sitting in a fairly small and confined room with temperatures that are probably quite high. your body will start sweating and no amount of deodorant will stop that.

If I was playing a game and somebody asked me what I was up to I'd say "ah I'm playing [whatever game], what's up?" And actually most people act surprised when I say I game once in a while.
I don't lie about it. My hobbies are:
Gaming Playing/Practicing Bass and Guitar Socializing (partying and going to gigs w/ my band basically)
If anybody has an issue with it they can take their issue up with themselves, not me. Because I'm not the one with a problem, they are.
Dont lie about being a gamer. This isnt 1990 or even 2000.
I went to an interview for a top bank once and was asked what my hobbies are. Part of my answer was that I spend a lot of my free time playing games.
I got the job.
Turns out, the 55 year old manager played WoW for 5 years non-stop and actually knew about the Starcraft scene a bit and the rest of the group (the guys anyway), played games like CoD, TeamFortress2 etc so they thought I would be an ideal team-member lol

I don't think that this is true at all and it appears to me as if people blaming WoW are making the same mistake as the people responsible for this RTL clip.
The stereotypical nerd had a horrible reputation and associated appearance since the inception of video games, possibly even before that, and you'll surely recognize that if you just make an effort thinking about it.
What WoW has done is to bring gamers, or gaming in general more into the spotlight, because it probably is one of the most successful, both in market penetration and commercially, game of all time. The number of gamers has increased drastically. WoW encompasses people of many age groups & social backgrounds more than any other game. It is played by mothers & fathers. It also united all of these people under its name, despite of where they came from and enables them to uniformly be called "WoW gamers". It simply brought more attention and that's why (WoW) gamers are more noticable. That's probably a much more plausible explanation than simply saying "WoW players are the worst, they ruined the reputation of us real gamers. We are better than them! How dare they".
The fact that several people of our own crowd, in a thread specifically pointing to bad stereotyping & criticizing it, would go out of their way to attack other gamers is telling & disappointing. Don't you see it?

Here we can observe a typical nerd. From looking at flashy colors all day long a curios symptom develops. He can be observed lying down and rapidly, under moaning of exhaustion, sitting up again. This is called an epileptic seizure and this poor fellow has to endure it well over 100 times a day. Sitting in the basement for most of the day alienated him from the natural world around him, with the result of him showering two times a day and wasting our natural resources without even thinking about it. Sadly he doesn't know any better - in computer games the water never goes away. After a long day confined in his basement the angry nerd, full of frustration from losing too many games, goes outside. Angrily he stomps mother nature for a good 7-10 miles to let go of his tension, knowing he wastes his life away with computer games.

Pretty ironic, she represents the stereotype of a model. Pretty, dumb, shallow. (Not saying it is true)
About the smell: What do people expect? It's summer - very hot (they even mention 30°C in the shadow during the show), and the gamescom was way overcrowded (doors were shut on saturday, because of too many people wanting in). And then you have people walking around such an event for 8+ hours. Maybe even after an hour long drive to the venue? How can anyone not smell after that? Even that girl had sweat glistering skin & greasy hair. I doubt she smelled nice & non-sweaty.
When I'm finished with my normal workouts I'm sweating & probably would start smelling like a pig as well. But I have a shower available (people dont have such a novelty at gamescom).

Its not about what the girl thinks, it is the way the whole report is set up. They try extremely hard to present gamers as bad as possible. Repeatedly claiming gamers smell, cant get girls, are all around weird etc. The girl is just a useful idiot to get across their message, just like their best exampes of gamers they could find a the event. A similar report about any other social group would have been a scandal.
5 thousand people were there, but they weren't normal people. These land monsters counted as two, three, sometimes four people all at once. Yes, SC2 was here, but WoW was the big attraction for Blizzcon. More people were there for that than anything else. It was the most grotesque demographic I have ever seen.

Shes a university student, who took a job as a hostesse at gamescom. Shes presenting some game together with other girls and maybe got 500 euros or smth like that from RTL to participate in their report. So shes no expert shes just the opposite kind of person to those hardcore gamers.
Pretty much. What did you expect honestly? Many of the models you see at those conventions are students and in many cases aren't gamers.
Was expecting nothing different, in fact my girlfriend worked some hostesse jobs on conventions too. I just wanted to explain to Timestreamer, because he asked what position in tv she holds ^^
5 thousand people were there, but they weren't normal people. These land monsters counted as two, three, sometimes four people all at once. Yes, SC2 was here, but WoW was the big attraction for Blizzcon. More people were there for that than anything else. It was the most grotesque demographic I have ever seen.
I was awaken by Hot_Bid jumping on my bed screaming "BLIZZCON BLIZZCON BLIZZCON".
That's satire though, or so I hope. RTL works hard to appear serious & maintain that appearance for people who don't know any better than to believe them. They are like FOX News, just not with the same focus on political opinion making. One guy in this thread described it as social pornography, and although I've never heard of that term before it does seem to describe some aspects of it well. Sorry if I took your post for something other than it is.
Oh, so that's why I've been taking summer courses, working, doing off-to-the-side work for people, playing video games, bathe and use deodorant everyday, and am in a relationship. D:
I didn't realize how correct you were, Ms. da Silva . lololol
Worst thing about this is that RTL broadcasted a short bit about Furries a day earlier which was absolutely positive and didn't mention their retarded crazy sex antics at all. Great way to piss off a majority of the population while crawling up the ass of a sick, sad minority that's mentally insane.
one of the editors is also trying to be funny about it... https://www.facebook.com/tim.kickbusch?sk=wall (he says: "I personally believe gamescom-visitors and gamers are humorless people") srsly wanna throw oil in the fire?
They take the ugliest and weirdest looking persons for interviews. Standard TV... Really sad, but I don't really care anymore. Can't even remember the last time I watched TV on my own.

lolo haha, they gave some funny voice over the the model girl~
It's sad that the many are being judged by the few. In my experience, most gamers have been very well-balanced people who enjoy video games as a fun thing to do whether they're alone or with friends, I've met very few cave trolls who only leave their uncle's basement to gather the resources required to continue functioning as a living organism.
Maybe being on television and so on can distort your understanding of the average person's life and what kind of stuff is standard. I mean what kind of person do you have to be to seriously not know anyone who owns an xbox or something and is normal.
Either you live an extremely sheltered life or you just don't know very much about the general populace because you mainly interact with a certain niche, only things I can think of.

pleasee :p everyone knows gamers dont smell...Thats cosplayers :D seriously though its people talking about something they dont know, they wouldnt ask Tom Brady why he plays football, and say that its a waste of time, the reason mass media and most of the population of the world hate Esports is because its different and they are afraid of change from more physical sports into less physical ones.

Isnt this somewhat "üble nachrede" ( dictonarie says "defamation") cuz ive been there ... and they totaly trying to make one of the biggest buisness and one of the biggest events look bad?!
Not saying i fit their explanations at all ... not even close ... but that wasnt very nice at all shame, on u RTL!!
Basically those two kind souls are agrégés in philosophy (not a Ph.D. but a very high diploma) and they're explaining us that gamers are all immature youngsters unable to communicate and how video games are in essence poor in content and uninteresting. Could you clarify this a little more for me, please?
Do you mean a) the population of people watching RTL?
These people are not in a minority though, even less so compared with gamers. RTL has the/among the highest penetration among German speaking media outlets.
The higher the standards for intellectual consistency, sophistication, honesty you want to apply, the smaller the amount of people who'll fit such criteria. In fact intellectually rigorous people are in the minority among humans, because intellect isn't among the main traits selected for in humans, or any other species for that matter. Even now when we think ourselves independent of nature it can be observed that higher education, among other factors, consistently leads to a decrease in birth rate. Not saying that genetics is the most important part here, but it should be pointed out that the more well versed/educated you become and the more you follow what the learned should teach you, the less "human" (from a strictly evolutionary perspective) you become, because behaviours, culture, values acquired through study are not only independent from primal instincts, but will often be counter-intuitive and even lead to conflicts with your natural behaviour/instincts/urges.
Or do you mean b) furries?
In that case I hope you reconsider your post and remove the degrading remarks about people who merely have different interests from your own.
Hit the nail on the head. On the other hand, I've never felt like one was really required
- They are addicted to games and because of that dont care how they look: X + Show Spoiler +
Not 100 % true. Addicted to games, well...more like addicted to the constant flow of information the internet provides. And I've never cared for my looks even before the internet devoured me so I dont really think that's the prominent reason.

Lol who the fuck cares. As long as you don't stink and and shit.. just don't let it bother you. I don't know a lot of people that watch the news anyways.

Many people aren't, which is why publications like these are so problematic. People are not those noble beings created in the perfect image of god. We are primarily animals, and it shows and is hard to overcome, which in turn is why publications like these are popular and achieve such high ratings.
Damn, superficial girls who I don't know and who don't have a clue about my passion said on a sensationalist TV channel that the people with the same passions as me smell bad and don't have time for girls!
That hurts! If at least I smelled bad, it would have been a little bit farther to complete bullshit than it is...
Anyway, let me try their recipe, I think I got it : "People who work in sensationalist TV channels are coke addicted whores, workaholic, and don't have time for generating quality content."
Woah, that felt good! I know why they do it all day every day now!
If we had a report like this, as derogatory and senseless, on some event where a lot of people from some ethnic minority attend it would have definitely been considered racist. I'd still hit that blonde chick tho.
That's not the only thing that happens. You have a bunch of mindless drones who can't think for themselves and get the whole stereotype rolling, where the unlucky ones who happen to not fall under any of these categories except for the title of "Gamer" get thrown into one category, period. You can try arguing with them, but it doesn't do you any good, because "It was on the news, so it must be true and infallible." I'd use a political analogy, but I don't think the mods would receive this post well if I went on about politics... so I'ma jump out on a limb here and say compare it to any political party you don't agree with, and consider what you think of your opponents most of the time, assuming you don't belong to the moderate part of the group. I'm not saying it's wrong to belong to any party or hold any mindset, but just give it some thought.
When I met my wife, I told her I was a gamer. She didn't believe me. When we moved in together and I had 5+ consoles and played PC games all the time, she was in disbelief. She thought I was very "normal" in that I wasn't socially awkward, I had hygiene, and was overall a regular guy.
That being said, this stereotype isn't without merit. I know a lot of gamers who are horribly awkward, who have no personal hygiene and would never talk to a girl unless it was unknowingly on the internet. I understand the frustration some may feel here, because it's never nice to be put in a box (for some of us, a box we have been fighting to eliminate).

so they went to a games con and filmed to the ugly guys? I could go to the Mall of America and get like 10x the footage of disgusting chicks if I cut the film to paint the picture I wanted. Does that mean that all chicks who love to shop are ugly, obviously not.
I fart a lot, often on my gf in bed, then we roll around laughing for 5 mins choking in gas, its awesome.

Honestly, I think it's more often than not true. I don't believe I fit the description but since my current job has me selling electronics in walmart, 9/10 of the kids buying pc games are actually quite smelly and clearly not very clean D: I'm serious. Console gamers seem to be the more "casual" gamers and don't quite fit the description near as much though. Still, you can't stereotype all gamers like that, I always smell great :3 so do my nerd friends (nohomo)
Clearly this is just the "authorities" complaining because young people have realized the world is all bullshit. We would rather game than work and deal with this bullshit world the politicians have given us.

Errrr, well I don't agree with what she says, however the fact that gamers get so up in arms and instantly cry and try to justify themeselves, IMO has always shown that gamers as a whole need a lot of growing up to do.

Most gamers around the world have suffered this kind of misinformed crap in some way. All kinds of accusations have been thrown towards gamers. I mean what we can do is just.... show them wrong. Show that the smelly awkward people are not the majority and that gaming is a legitimate hobby that an adult can do.
However I don't think being all up in arms will help dissipate all those preconceptions about gamers. Its like when Roger Ebert said that games can't be art(his opinion although I dont agree) and inmediatly tons of childish whiny gamers made a crapstorm about it, I don't think that kind of stuff helps paint gamers in a positive light.
My point being is that we should just ignore this kind of crap and just do our best to show people that gamers can be succesful people with balanced lifes who like playing games.

There is a grain of truth in all that. What it boils down to is very simple. Esthetically/Hygenically speaking, people don't 'get ready' to game. This statement is untrue when dealing with almost any other aspect of someone's life.
When gaming time cuts into personal time we may have those problems, but this can also be said about anything else.

Anyhorse, I look great, take a shower everyday, i game, i'm ripped to shreds, that "Laura" is stupid.
haha, pretty much what I expected... german media feeding stereotypes. Still tho, why would you feel offended? I think you can only feel offended if you fit into their perspective on gamers. I loved gaming ever since I was a little boy but always did sports as well. So I do not feel addressed by the whole thing.
But it certainly shows how germans and especially the media's view did not change over the years. They are somehow always afraid of change. I really gotta say - and this might be rare for me - that I love the american approach on new things. Weirdly their view is way more open-minded than ours...

pros have girlfriend look at iNcontrol and IdrA 2 months ago or something. it's such a bad stereotype that is only based of the "iconic" gamer which is stupid imo it's wrong in so many ways
I am outraged, not because I feel offended, for I know the stereotype to be false, not because other gamers feel offended, I know they don't, for they too know the stereotype to be false, but because there are non-gamers out there who very well may believe this shit.
this is very much like raising children telling them "you should avoid the people from the other side of town, they are stupid and their stupidity might rub off on you", here they tell adults "you shouldn't be a gamer because then you will start to smell bad and lose your girlfriend if you have one".
the kids on the other side of town never get a chance to prove the statement wrong, and the children will most likely not pursue the truth in the matter, instead thinking the other side of town is where "the stupid people" live.
I think its a better community than most because people that look like Grubby or TLO don't laugh or give shit to people who look like the fat guy with a beard and long hair. Maybe they have mental issues that they don't want to shave/wash/cut their hair? maybe they just don't want to?
once again: people who have no connection with video games complain about them

You all need to realize one thing: if somebody: a) watches RTL to begin with and b) watches THESE kinds of shows and - furthermore c) takes them seriously
then every hope is already lost. I'm so not trolling, the level of stupidity sometimes surprises even me. What this means is, that you shouldn't be too afraid that many "normal" people watch this, let alone, take it seriously.
Just ignore it, unless you "really" care about what racist, uneducated, intolerant, xenophobic (I could go on for a long time) people think of gamers. The target audience of these kinds of shows is - in a nutshell - the scum of the german speaking society. RTL just gives them what they want to watch.

For sure. But it's kind of like saying "Americans are stupid and ignorant". Even though some fit right in there, some don't.. Or like saying that Europeans are arrogant, which admittedly probably mostly is true, but still not very nice to say ^^
You can't really pull sterotypes if you want to keep it at a realistic level. You are not forced to deal with the stereotypes, Voltaire, you are forced to deal with the consequences of the prevalence of such stereotypes. Programs like this propagate & perpetuate superficiality, ignorance, short-sightedness, dishonesty. None of these attributes contributes anything positive to society. All of them undermine our ability to properly address the reality we live in, all of them undermine what is right, all of them undermine progress. They make ignorance acceptable by decreasing social pressure against it. I meant to say that you can dissociate yourself from these people all you want, but at one point or another you will inevitably have to deal with their actions and the consequences of them. We all live in the same world/limited space. These things cause harm. They should be addressed and failing to do so is to accept the decay of morals/society/virtues/call it what ever.
If you still want to disagree I'd be interested in hearing your justification for it.

Very good post
Nevertheless, my view of the problem is way more pessimistic. I am deeply convinced that there is no way of "saving" society, there are just way too many ignorant, dumb people. I have every intention of "tolerating" their way of living, which means, that I won't get in their way and pray they do the same.
You can't "force" somebody to not watch crap like RTL and read a good book instead. You can't "force" people to not hate on foreigners, Muslims, and whatnot. Personally, I don't have much hope left.
I've been to Lans and unfortunately some of the stuff they say is true. Some gamers don't care about their appearance and hygiene and when they all gather together for a big LAn it shows.

How do people smell at an openair festival? It's the same thing at gatherings of many people. Even our big lecture hall at the university smells like sweat in summer.

I didn't mention it because I thought it didn't make much sense....I mean, the stereotype is that gamers are incapable of having a girlfriend, not being gay.
She does however state that she knows a lot of gamers. So you wonder... does she know a bunch of smelly introverted guys who probably wouldn't really talk to a girl like her in the first place, or does she just know them in the sense of "I once saw him for a second from 10 miles away", or is she blatantly lying about her own experiences with gamers, or did she insult her friends without realizing it?
It covers the problem of how RTL has consistently aired shows that have the only intention of ridiculing certain people. The approach of RTL to entertain by insulting others is nothing new. Meaning: the "intelligent" media has been aware of the problem for a long, and tries to raise people's attention. Unfortunately quite hopeless.
EDIT: oh yeah, nearly forgot - what RTL does is obviously borderline illegal, but that's touching the very delicate issue of freedom of the press...
I go to the gym. I get laid at least monthly (more so when in a relationship). I'm relatively good looking and not smelly XD. And I'm a big fuckin nerd to top it off. This topic has been addressed here many times, but these prejudices never get old.
yeah read about it yesterday in a german sc2 forum as well. It's kinda sad. I'm used to gamerbashing and we won't change a thing about it and obviously gamescon is a several day "festival" with loooots of people camping there or sleeping in a car for one night to get 2 days of games instead of just one. So yes you will find some (a lot?) that haven't shaved or did not have a shower for a day or 2. Just like every other event that takes more than 2 days I guess.
But thats not really a problem for me, that's in television all over the place. The really bad thing is the girl doing some live-judging on some guys to tell everyone that this guy is ugly/smells/never touched a girl/ whatevs. That's just disgusting... Obviously it's kind of lame for a tv station to pick out some teens, interview them and to show them off so everyone can think "yeah, I'm better than this stupid kid". This really is nothing new for TV (pretty much all those shows between 12:00 and 20:00 aim for that) and those people are paid in general but I really don't know if you should do that with kids...
Edit:

I'm reading that right now, I think a lot of people are aware of that. At least those who don't watch tv. Didn't know there's an article about it.
lol the website programmbeschwerde.de ("programmbeschwerde" = program complaint) is down, too many gamers want to complaint about this :D Of course it is unprofessional and just stupid by RTL to support prejudice like this, but people shouldn't overcommit to it and flame RTL in a harsh way, this will just improve the prejudice against us (gamers). For me it's just another reason to stop watching TV, especially RTL which is like FOX in America. There are much better and more professional news and information sources on the internet.
its funny i kind of fit the bill of any negative sterotype whenever any discussion comes up when they mention gamers(especially WoW),D&D roleplaying, horror, potheads, musicians, metalheads (especially black metal), grunge, freaks, nerds, liberals, emo, hipsters, hippies, punks. Why seperate the discussion, lets just fucking ban everything thats not sports or mainstream and get it overwith as its the same shit with new wrapping. Seems like im going around waving the flag for losers out there, as Ive got no choice, as all I ever was interested in is bad for you it seems.
What is almost as stupid as this article is all the bragging going on in this thread. "Yeah guys I get laid all the time and I got a hot girlfriend!" What are you trying to prove? Insecure people, man...
I dont know why everyone is so upset about that. It's just RTL. They talk shit all day long. Ridiculing people is not limited to gamers, but rather the channel's philosophy. Shows like "Das Supertalent" oder "Deutschland Sucht Den Superstar" (Pop Idol) to name a few really make fun of people and their only goal seems to be to emberrass the people to get many viewer. This is nothing special, imo it's just the way tabloit journalists do their work. I think people wouldnt be that upset when BILD, The Sun or the New York Post would write articels like that.
But don't get me wrong. The article is fucking offending and biased. But this is not a "waaah the society is afraid of gamers!!!!" thing. It's rather a minority-bashing thing.
Gamers don't smell bad. We don't do a lot of physical exercise so we're not all sweaty and stuff. What smells bad is the slice of pizza that's been lying under the bed for a week, or the half carton of milk that's been on the counter for a month.
Gamers not having time for girls is also false. Imagine a fat pale lard living in his mom's basement eating twinkies and playing call of duty all day. Do you think he's single because he doesn't have the time for a girl? I'd say time is the least of the reasons why he doesn't have a girlfriend.
Can't say I understand why anyone would care about this sort of thing. People have ignorant opinions about most hobbies, who cares? By the next generation "gamers" will as meaningless as "film watchers" or "book readers" because it will just be part of society.
Noone should really feel personally offended by a broadcast that is purpose-built to be disrespectful to a certain group of people. Shows like this only exist to make the people watching feel better about themselves; being the morons that they are they dont realize they easily could be next on the show. Most gamers I know dont fit into any of the stereotypes that were mentioned.
I kinda like how everyones trying to do something about it, be it starting a thread about it on TL, writing a complaint directed at the producers of the show or just making friends aware of the fact that certain stereotypes just dont exist (anymore). What I didnt like was some folks starting to bash this girl on facebook, thats not only counterproductive but makes them just as ignorant :/
It's funny to see people flipping out about this stereotyping when it pertains to them. You get angry, frustrated, claim this discrimination is bullshit yet I see it on TL all the time and few people seems to have problems with it. "Women can't compete on the level of men in video games", "jocks are all douchebags", etc.

Because he is inadvertently stereotyping TL.net users. Makes it twice as funny!
I don't know what's the big deal about this. It's just a bunch of idiots criticizing gamers and failing at it. Anybody who has a moderate amount of intelligence should be able to tell that all of what these people said are lies. However, is gaming in Germany scorned at by the general public? Then I understand why the OP would post this, and I hope he and his gamer buddies solve this issue.
I have to agree on one point. We gamers do smell. I think it's coz we don't sweat enough. And maybe the amount of chips we eat, or "food you can eat with one hand". I try my best, but jogging regularly is hard >.<

Yes because everyone on TL knows and cares about your affiliation with sports.
And also jocks and athletes are not interchangeable terms. you're not called a jock just because you do sports.

Aren't you called a jock if you do sports and are a douchebag? Therefore 'jocks are all douchebags' is a truism. I dunno man it's a very American term.
Anyway the article is dumb. Yep.
Although the people who I know who are the most serious gamers definitely do conform to that stereotype. But it's not anything to do with games; their thing could be stamp collecting and they'd be the same, it's because they have nothing to do with their lives so spend it all on their hobby.
Hello, having been perusing TeamLiquid.net I came across this thread and have subsequently been extremely offended. I would like to inform author of aforementioned video as well as my distinguished peers of TL.net that I in fact
[ ] am extremely good looking. [ ] can bench over 350lbs and have less than 6% body fat. [ ] can beat up Hugh Jackman.
In addition to this I have an extremely active social and sexual life. My girlfriend
[ ] has a bust size an order of times larger than average, [ ] is a supermodel and actress, [ ] is Scarlett Johansson,
and
[ ] we have intercourse at least 16 times week. [ ] is currently sitting on my lap. [ ] once did a lesbian scene with Megan Fox.
Furthermore I would like to inform you all that I am in fact a rather distinguished competitive video game player and I
[ ] am currently in [Masters/Grandmasters] league. [ ] am rated A+ on multiple accounts in ICCUP. [ ] am competing in the finals of a major prestige tournament [tonight/tomorrow/as I am writing].
Thank you for reading, and please appreciate I am so busy with competing/having regular sex/being handsome that I can only browse TeamLiquid.net and these entirely unrelated videos for six hours a day.

Yeah but there's no way to say that without sounding like a dick.
'Well...I dunno about you guys, but I'm actually fucking awesome.'
Of course ppl stereotype, there's nothing you can do to change it. People go on TV to rage and rant these days, it's gotten pretty low from what it used to be.
Don't watch TV anymore. It's just a dude in a suit, being angry about stuff. Hulu <3 and House M.D.

Where I come from, the word took a life of it's own. There were only a couple of guys who weren't very bright, but the rest were pretty smart and honor role students. Others still labelled us as the jocks though. :/
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Thank you TL. Just thank you XD
But really RTL is not known for its well performed journalism so I am not really shocked that they bash on the stereotype of "gamers". All the shit people watch on that channel ... I mean they watch it voluntarily they are already lost in my eyes.
Forget the stereotypes for a second: gaming, especially mobile gaming, is one of the few growth industries we have in this f'd up economy. More and more people are becoming casual gamers, and they're spending a lot of money (check out the july distimo report from distimo.com which argues on average a freemium game downloader invests 14 dollars in his/her purchase). So i don't know if the smacktalk is sarcastic or not. But if they're laughing at us, let them laugh all they want. Cuz we're taking those laughs straight to the bank.
I love how people are so offended by this, probably because they fit the description to a tee. We all have met someone like that, so it's not as if they're wrong here, and if it doesn't pertain to you, then why do you care?

Because it is perpetuating a false stereotype.
Do you also think black people should just ignore racist sterotypes of "he's black and has money/a job/a car/a bike ... he must have stolen it lolololol" or how about sexist stereotypes which are demeaning towards women?
Just because the stereotype does not apply to me personally does not mean that it is not offensive.
This is definitely really stereotyped. I have an incredibly cute girlfriend that I love very much and at one point I was one of the top 15 best GH/Rockband players in the world. I WILL admit that since i've been with my girlfriend I haven't had much time for gaming. But school and work also come into affect there as well. I think it doesn't matter how much of a gamer you are. You can be good looking and be a gamer, and you can take showers and be a gamer too lol. This stereotype is more about gamers who choose to not do any of this and might be one of those "ugly, nerdy" type people that you would see in high school. Gaming and smelling bad and being good with the ladies has very little correlation.
Guys the comments are stereotypically true. But its the same to say blonde girls are dumb or demographic x is this and demographic y are like that. Not in all cases of course but her statement is generally what her social group experience of us and its I think they are fair because I wouldn't want to speak to some dumb blonde and the best way to do that would be not to wash for a week and ignore her completely by playing a game

I agree with your general point of view. However, some of the reactions in this thread are a bit too defensive. (seemingly) Desperate, unsubstantiated claims of "not me!" only invoke skeptecism and may even reinforce the stereotypes they aim to refute.

It's more about the very suggestive and very one-sided way the article perpetuates the stereotypes. Plus gamers don't have the best reputation in Germany to begin with.
Like it or not some stereotypes have a bit of truth to them. As for gamers being smelly, I can imagine that 'gamers' have a higher % chance of being less hygienic than normal. At least I can confidentially say that I'm not a stinky gamer. =P

This is just Yellow Journalism at its finest. By the end of the day, I'm proud to have gaming in my life while I still retain quality hygiene and social skills. They may have a point in saying that some of the stereotypes are true but it's already gotten to the point of argumentum ad hominem and ad populeum. It seems gamers in Germany are like the gays in Southern American states.
How can they broadcast shit like this on tv. I just dont get it, it's just offending and wrong. Yes in some cases they might be true but that counts for everything. I dont think because they are gamers they are like that, i think it has to do with something else like they lack social confidence and instead of socializing they sit at home in front of their computer playing video games. I dont think the games includes a bag of poo that you have to apply to your skin.

Anchoring bias is a lovely thing.
i want to take this and expand on it a little. WHile i mostly agree with what you said. Yes north americans are fat its not a secret and you see fat people everywhere. I would still say that wow/mmo players are still fatter then the average person. So if we take that logic and apply it to europe id still think the average wow/mmo player would be fatter then the average person in europe. I dont think casuals gamers are really included into this. Despite what you may think 99% of the gamers who attened a LAN are more then just casual gamers they probably have some type of interest/passion for games.
As for the people saying "hey isnt nada(or whatever player) a trackstar and get laid on the daily?" your naming 1 person big deal how many people play the game naming one guy isn't helping your case here, its actually amusing to say something like that in defense to what this news program is propagating.

I think you've misinterpreted my post, but anyway I'll go onto another point.
Go to Blizzcon or any other video gaming convention where the majority of participants are MMORPG players. Yes, there are fat people there but I'm not going to believe this is in larger numbers than in the average population until I see factual evidence proving so.
Most MMORPG players I know are actually quite skinny. This contradicts your view of the situation, how about that? If you're just going to provide anecdotal evidence rather than cold hard facts or researched evidence then your posts don't hold much value. Your perception may be quite wrong indeed.
You cannot say that gamers (or gamers of a specific genre of game) are any heavier / lighter than average people without having evidence pointing in either direction.
Before you say "damn, they braodcast this in the german television??"
I don't know if this was said already in this thread. But RTL2 just like RTL (and other channels) are television channels that are only watched by people having a very low intelligence. People in Germany say it's the TV channel for BILD-readers who can't read. BILD is the biggest german "newspaper" that also only stupid people read. It's also no real newspaper. It's mostly big pictures and a huge badly researched headlines. Also on the first page there is always a naked women, every day. So that says it all about this german biggest and most successful media channels.
Sometimes it's so damn embarrassing to be german. There are so many stupid shitheads here who dont even know they are stupid T_T
So this should be added when watching this clip. This clip was not seen by anyone on TV having mediocre or high intelligence
it depends on what kind of gamer you are. the very high end of them, like boxer etc. have a very important image to uphold and would therefore potentially come across as desirable (in korean culture, etc.). the guy who plays a bit of racing games, warcraft and so on casually would probably be...just another average guy. i think most guys do play video games for couple hours a week.
those in the college gaming club, so called hardcore gamers, people who wear video game/razer t shirts out, i look upon them as nerds. quite undesirable imo, unless you are totally smokin. so tldr; anything in between casual avg joe to top professional pretty much = the nerd zone.
I am terribly sorry guys and I take the blame. I did not shower for 2 days, but I will now, because the water maintenance is over. Also, girls are snakes. See ya in aqualand!
They are addicted to games and because of that dont care how they look
Excuse my humble opinion, but this has more to do with your career/self confidence than gaming.
Also, her grandfather was a nazi, therefore gamers have an abundance of amusement.

"Take this logic?"
There is no logic, all you have is very minor anecdotal evidence that is completely worthless.
doesn't take a genius to figure out that playing games for long periods =/= exercise of course being homer simpson on the couch is pretty much the same thing.
a person who spends more time playing games is less likely to be outside doing some kind of physical activity. even walking to and fro burns some calories. so whether you are a couch potato or a keyboard hero, simple logic will tell you that these people are less likely to be fit.

"Smell bad and have no time for girls"
What of that says being fit? You don't need to exercise to have good hygiene or lady skills.
As for exercise, if you work for 8 hours (even better if it is a physical job), sleep for 8 hours, exercise for 1 hour and still play video games for 7 hours a day. 1 hour's intense focused exercise (plus anything you get while at work) a day is enough to stay quite healthy.
So you're wrong, it isn't "simple logic" explaining why these people are less likely to be fit, it is false stereotyping which results in you thinking these people are less likely to be unfit.
If their only experience of "gamers" is a huge event like gamescom, I'm not surprised to hear that opinion to be perfectly frank.Of course, gamers all around them normally, they just didn't realise it, so they're judging purely based on who they see at gamescom. I've been to these kind of events before, and of course many of whom they attract are the most fanatical of gamers - some of which DO fit the stereotype.
Almost all of the gamer population are just regular people of course though, without any kind of odour/relationship/addiction problems - it'll just take a while for public opinion to change as gaming becomes more and more accepted.

i agree, exercise is not directly related to those things, but someone was pointing out that gamers are, on average, fatter or less fit.
try to describe realistic scenarios. a person who plays games for 7 hours a day is quite unlikely to do some gym work for an hour or two. yes there are exceptions, but ask yourself, is this really the case? as opposed to the average guy who takes things in moderation.

Are you talking out of your ass or where are you getting your information?
well i was there in cologne, and it was very frustrating. (i´m 28 years old..the average ugly kid was 12-16 there) As i told some people already: It´s the same with Rap-Music. You cant tell anyone in public that you like it, because you get judged like these average Rap-Idiots. Same applies to Gaming. I´m done with that....wont tell anyone anymore that i play computer games. The majority of the people i saw there were disgusting. BUT, in all honesty, i enjoyed the crowd at the IEM Masters Starcraft matches the most!! This "group" seemed a little bit more civilized (i was there on saturday...never ever visit this kind of event on a saturday... )
But i was very disappointed at the current gaming community. I would have loved to see the TL Meeting...i heard it was really good from a guy i met, or more was pressed against, in the train on our way back home. But i guess they were older then the average "Gamer" who attended GC.

I think there is an area of a lot of people that might play 3-4 hours a day and still exercise quite regularly. These people would be considered "gamers" my pretty much anyone, however if you don't watch TV or sit on Facebook for hours at a time having a life outside this time is very realistic.
If you work 40hrs a week and play 7 hrs a day i'd say you are in the minority. Nearly everyone I know that plays 7+ hours in a day regularly is either at university or working part time. I also play soccer with these people on Thursday nights...
I love the mod´s top note - really just made me crack up! Still I find it an outrage airing so much nonsense on TV in a time slot that attracts attention. It is easy to make good ratings with badly researched information and provocative content - thats why almost all media including internet homepages use these tactics. We have to live with it because the majoritiy of people watching, listening or reading are into in that kind of stuff and exagerations make everything even more interesting. Sadly this time it has hit us - the gamers. Although I strongly disagree with the points risen in this report it is true that a lot of people see in gamers the ugly cellar dweller who never had a girlfriend. Even in my family - that includes my wife - gaming is looked upon as a "bad thing". While watching television is accepted, gaming is absolutely not. I believe that we have to deal with that for now, because it will take some time before people will realize that gaming is infact better than television in every regard.

lol
the average german low-lifer sits 7 hours a day in front of the television....watching RTL; the rest of the day he is on the internet, looking for lesbian teenage girl porn or is in chatrooms under the name of "badboy69"
I'm of the sincere opinion that even hardcore gaming nerds do spend their time much more intelligently than a pretty significant portion of the rest of society
mmmm german free tv got boring a while ago. Unless you like fake reality shows 24/7. And i thought talk shows would be bad.
Anyway if anything involving someone below the age of 26 happens here in germany. The gameindustry and their evil games are at fault, turning teens into killermashines (the shooting clubs they are in could never do that, ok ). And every political party is using this to gain votes. Just like everyone was against nuclear power after the earthquake, to don't lose votes. right after extending the time people in germany could use this sort of energy a while longer but pay extra taxes. Now the big energy concerned got kicked in the nether region. And politicians went omg how can they do that. (they have to fire around 1000 people now because of those changed decisions and of course the concern gets blamed for not switching to solar and wind energy, because they should have known !)
In the end, german tv is as meh as the politicians here. But i guess everyone in the world is having the same issues x3. Except switzerland xD
Ohhh and i don't smell ... but i have no girlfriend sobs T-T . would make me homo though if i had ^^

Whatever happened to the lanky, pale, bespectacled nerd trope? I'm sure more people generally see gamers as underweight than overweight, since they'll be skipping meals and not sleeping because they game so much.
[SPOILER] I'm being sarcastic. Exercise is as important as sleeping and eating well, and while there are kids who neglect those things due to video games, those kids are not the norm. I'm sure most adults know how to take care of their body, and I'm sure they're responsible enough to put one measly hour into exercise daily.
Sorry guys could you please stop your trivial bullshit about you having a NORMAL LIFE!? Read the warning, guys. You don't realize how you actually relativizing the issue.
It's in german, but you can clearly see that they don't care, he literally says that everything that matters is money. But he's an idiot for saying it on Skype LOL. We did the damage by getting attention to them because of this, now let's use this to do something good with it!
He said that it's probably forgotten within a short amount of time and that they won't face any consequences whatsoever. Let's show him that he is wrong.
This seem to become huge. The guy who is responsible for this now 'apologized'. Seems like the pressure is getting big, there's no way he would apologize sincerely.
Tbh the smell at Gamescom wasn't really that great. Some people just stunk up the place, and a lot of kids didn't really look like they cared about their appearance (greasy hair, fluffy neckbeards, dirty glasses).
But on the other side there were a lot of couples, some families with their kids and even a few hot ladies (without bf). The majority of people were just there to have a good time, and RTL is just picking up the stereotype to create a news item. They don't care about the response, because what the RTL viewers expect is that Gamescom is a convention full of bespectacled, acne-ridden, neckbearded fat nerds who are all there to fap on CGI women.
They should make some footage of the good representatives of the gaming scene, either due to their women and looks or their charisma to finally crush those damn stereotypes to bits.

Zhe german humour ! If this was in any way funny or meant to be funny, I as an austrian wont get it. I hearby proclaim the germans to be the most unfun ! Sry, but in my opinion thats just a lame excuse for really bad and cheap journalism.

No, it's just a straight up lie. They exactly got the reaction they wanted and Hirschhausen already confirmed that via Skype.
We can't just let them do this shit, seriously! It's disgusting.
At first I was as upset as you all, but then I thought :"Hey it is RTL!"
If you ever take a look at their airing plans and see what for hilarious BS they send, you can probably get a really nice image in your head which people are watching their program. So why would I try to argue with stupid ignorant people. It is like always. You can easily say negative things about something without any proof, but if you are on the other side you have to get evidences for everything you say. They wanted to brand all us gamers as killers in germany, now they say we are dirty and not good looking. Why would you wanna explain something to people that they will not understand.
I am a nerd and to proud to react to something as hilarious.
It like Deus Ex, "they are hiding behind lies, always in the shadows, proxy soldiers" :D.
I stoped watching tv over 3 years ago, only watch some movies. Everybody knows, the more impresive a story sounds on tv, the less likely its true. In fact, to get any accurate reading of "news" i read newspapers from diffrent countries on my country. Its the closest thing to "objective news" that you can get.
This unfortunatelly also is now also bouncing on humans. People lie more than they talk 90% of the cases... Well, i guess ill be here to see when all this goes to hell, but ill die before having to rebuild it, so lets enjoy the fun :D.
I hope these people realize that any time you have 275,000 people come in and out of the same place over a 5 day period many of them will be extremely pathetic / socially awkward / smell bad / not have girlfriends. Oh, wait......that's exactly what they were planning on.
I find it interesting that RTL now picked on a group that fights back. Normally they only make fun of unemployed people on HARTZ IV and build up a hatred for them (as if every unemployed person in germany is an antisocial fucker who starts drinking at 8 in the morning). Could get pretty interesting.

lol this exactly - angry nerds and the internet is a dangerous combo
Normally they do indeed only choose groups, or people that are NOT closely connected with one another. Unemployed people is the perfect example. Every unemployed is unemployed "by himself" (unless a huge factory just got closed), RTL can make fun of them without having to be afraid of much consequences. There won't be an uproar in the "unemployed community". Gamers, however, form a pretty tight network nowadays - I'm sure RTL to some extent underestimated the shitstorm that this would start.

Also "gaming" isn't anymore something only nerds too. Everyone has a console at home, plays on his mobile phone etc. It's a booming industry, RTL probably also upset a large part of casual gamers. There were 60.000 people at gamescon, that's huuuuge.

Funny because the state owned television channels are all really decent and except for a few others the only watchable stations. Especially ZDF, their digital channels(zdf kultur broadcasting sc2 ), and associated channels like ARTE, 3sat, Pheonix, where you actually learn something instead of losing and IQ point for every hour you watch
i like the update saying that it was all a joke. u cant really blame poeple for taking an article from germany seriously, after all a study found them to be the least humerous nation. i will definitely say that some gamers do smell and have no life, but on the other hand there are obviously clean respectable members of society that game. i feel gamers span the whole spectrum of social edicate/cleanliness which is why we are a great comunity.

ur right! but this report says that all gamers smell, are ugly, stupid and so on! this includes you and everyone else in the whole gaaming community. No exceptions made!
No one seems to care about social aspects of gaming! I guess there was no TV show about TLO´s or Sheth´s 24hour benefit streaming for Dw/oB. This is just discriminatory and misanthropic! Hope the editor will lose his job!
Did anybody see this already? The people of gamescom themselves made a commenton their facebook presence. They want to investigate if the report breaks any rules of journalism. Meanwhile people who are outraged are advised to file complains against RTL.
I will never understand why people in general care so much about what others think about them. Going around worrying what others think about you must be exhausting. The only thing you need to know is that time is on our side. Views like these will soon disappear because playing games will be become as commonplace as watching TV. In the mean time you should stop caring so much about how you're perceived by others, it's a big waste of time.

It limits the growth of ESPORTS as a business model if people think it's a joke. It's ruining ESPORTS. ESPORTS.
Wow, that was insulting. The sad part is that i feel like the majority of the non-gamers think like that. The worst is when most of the media covers gaming pretty much like this, brainwashing all of those too lazy to question themselves. All this labels people put on each other, just adds to the shallowness of the society.
I was actually very impressed by video, when I watched it with subtitles.
"I am, like I am" said the long hair dude, and he really hits the spot right there - maybe people shouldn't run around looking for the approval of TV and (insert name of random female student whose apparent job is to look pretty). Maybe, just maybe, it's not the gamers that should take a long look at themselves.

I study mathematics, so I generally have to deal with a lot of stereotypes (it ranges from "mathematicians aren't capable of eating aesthetically" to "mathematicians like to fuck sheep"). The best way I have discovered for dealing with this, is simply keeping calm and carrying on I don't know why stereotypes exist, but as long as one keeps on proving that they are false, one does the right thing imo.

People care because a completly diverse group of people gets demonized as smelly losers. RTL is not some shitty program, but a shitty program millions of people watch.

No, thats simply not true. It's a random tv show, with gamers shown that really are how they described them. If anybody thinks that all gamers are like that, just because of this article, he is certainly not part of the society.

But the thing is that they are talking about gamers in general.. its the same as saying that all germans are rude assholes, making a video, and show 2 rude germans in it.... It would upset the germans aswell. because they arent like that.. it's maybe 0,005% of them.. the same with gamers..
If they wanted to make a real, neutral vid, they would have interviewed "normal" looking people aswell... and i've been there, and most of the people were just "normal"..

Of course that is true...People which are not involved in the scene will believe this because they have no in-depth look at it...It just gives a wrong picture about a growing community, which could have a negative effect on it!
I like a lot, that it's not just the Germans that get angry. We got a huge German speaking community in Europa so that German, Austrian and Swiss gamers will respond and a lot of Dutch, Danish, Belgian etc as well. They really hit the jackpot with that report.
I saw this clip and I was shocked that RTL reached a new low. (Its like Fox-News in germany)
There is this one guy that says "I am happy just the way I am" and its a great statement. RTL are telling it like, everyone who doesnt have (fake) blond hair and pumps muscles everyday is not a "normal" person. It hate all this shit that the media tries to tell us that the only life-goal for our generation is to look like a model and get rich.

I mean, im not saying that im judging anyone because of their life choice, but some will, like this news channel for example.

I hope that was ironical, because otherwise, you're just as ignorant as the guys from RTL.
Gosh, how can you (and them) generalise people in such a manner?
Congratulations on reaching this thread. In the rare event that you are in grandmasters league, have a scorching hot girlfriend, and somehow avoided the terrible stench of being a gamer, please refrain from telling us about it. Damn. I guess that means I can't talk about my 47 Super-model girlfriends (5 of which have made covers of various magazines btw), or how I smell like fresh mountain air at all times, even when I'm caked in dirt and shit. And also how I have the time to run miles on end every day, have sex several dozen times, teach Flash how to play terran, and work out; all while running my billion dollar company (you probably haven't heard of it). What about my family of Aryan kids, who attend Ivy League schools, and also bang supermodels? And the other tons of reasons why my life is better than yours? Stupid mods ruining my internet.
But seriously, some people are ignorant and it's really hard to change that. Yes, some people do follow the stereotype of the "typical gamer" and I'm all for stereotype comedy, but not on national TV as a news report, where they're supposed to bring news, not make fun of certain groups of people.
And I mean seriously, why did the hostess even talk about those people? She is very much entitled to have opinions about them, but that's being a bit of a bitch to talk about the people you're meant to work with on national TV.

WOW i dont really know if i should laugh at you or just start crying over that statement. How many german pro gamers do u know to form your "opinion"? maybe you saw like 4 different ones on streams and shit? Maybe stood close to one or two at a live event? idk but thats just bullshit. I mean what would u think if i just said well in my opinion all teenagers from England are unsocial retards running around in the city burning cars and robbing stuff because you know i saw like 3 of them doing something like this on TV so everyone must be like that. Does that sound like its the truth? If it does to you then mayyyyybe you should start thinking about what you post before you post it TT

No I think it's because we don't need to hear everyone's stories as how they're the exception to the rule that this "article" is proposing.
OMG you have sex? Yah how shocking, most of us do.
If anyone is interested in pursuing this further, I advise them to send a letter to the producer/tv show in disguise of a parent who compliments this programming and asks for more similar content. It would be fun to see how they will respond to such letter and if they will inform the mystery parent that they only had humour in mind...
Otherwise the topic of games and the TV shows/bits who cover them has been quite well covered in this program:

The funny part is there is an actual gamescom review where they show of how "dumb" the gamescom girls are: and the women from the RTL video is in there
At the end was a really clever one with great humor if you speak german you should really check out the link the OP.
the original rtl gamescom video that is linked in the topic-starters first post cant be viewed anymore. rtl apparently desperatly tried to stop the outrage they once so carelessly started.

I can live with bloodthirsty killing-machine. I could repeat it to myself to psych up every time I'm laddering.
I had a girl that was from Germany and she told me that gamers are regarded as the lowest of the low. The moment she learned I played SC2 she freaked out and with a good reason. We broke up the next day. Anyway people will be prejudiced against you, no matter what you do. Whether it would be music, religion or even sports, you will be looked at differently by the common herd and only those who are ashamed of who they are, are going to be offended by such reports.
Everybody knows that most of the ppl who r watchin that are kinda poor.
Pretty much of their program is like "hey look at them, lol. Even we r better than those guys".
But what you are doing here is free advertisment for them. People who wouldn´t watch that show, will now do and even speak about it.
They show shit like that every day - just ignore it, it doesnt really matter.
E-Sports is still kinda new and many ppl dont know much about it. - The show shows that. But instead of whining about shows like that we should show the ppl how awesome esports can be. Instead of linkin that shit in fb, you should maybe link the Gom Finals.

maybe it is just because you are from america that you see more fat people.
see what I did here?
yes im in north america and that definently is a huge factor.
And maybe there is just a large proportion of fat people where you're from and hence you see people who are also gamers and in your mind you correlate the two, while disregarding all the fat non-gamers in your area.
I agree with this point there is no evidence on either side of the situation all we can do is specualte. From a by standers point of view gamers are pretty hefty on a whole.

Okay I see this argument way too often in this thread... If you take a big group of people and pick some examples, which reflect stereotypes you want to confirm, only show these examples and use em on the whole group, then it's just bad journalism. Presenting a whole (big) group of people as stinking couchdwellers without girlfriends is insulting, especially for those poor guys they showed in the report, it's simply ethically wrong. And even if you have a model as your gf and are a gamer so you don't feel personally concerned (or even if you're not a gamer) it's right to take offence at something like that, because it's wrong and if nobody takes offence at something like that it will just get worse (rtl isn't on the niveau of fox news, (they're actually still relatively far away from that) but they may become that way in the future if nobody cares) So don't forget people: It's right to care about stuff like that in the media, it always is.

I don't understand this "it's true" argument. I despise racism and sexism too, even though I am a white male. If someone comes and says "all niggers are damn lazy" you would feel offended too (rightfully) and don't say "hey, if it wouldn't be true, no one would feel offended".
Sexism is ok if its against girls! Funny only in Germany do they make articles like this. So germans WTF is up with all that long hair? Ponytail is how you get chix and progame or? Maybe I should save up!

The report was not about E-Sport. It was about the convention and gamers in general. The people they showed were mainly young people, not the people at the age of 30+. Maybe they shrug it off easily, but I remember my time when I had to discuss stuff like games with my mum, because she was all worried I would end up like a lunatic (she was pretty biased as well). I struggled for years to knock some sense into here and after I saw this one-sided report (actually saw a link on facebook), I remembered the time of my teens. This report is just painting a wrong picture to the broad masses. Sure, suggest to shrug it off, maybe you didn't have to fight with parents and peers all the time. But I for one felt taken back to the old times and was angry.
I don't like German television in general and don't watch it (apart from the daily news on ARD). But I happened to see it on the internet (facebook again) and this time I didn't just say "well here they go again". We gamers have been shunned for years, always getting dragged out when something terrible happened at schools. Go on a German playground or schoolground and see some of the kids go at each other. RTL is not helping with that. I think that's one big reason why they got at least 8000 files for complain so far and why even Anonymous is interested. This time RTL picked on a group that's actually standing together. I mean, who uses the internet the most? It's us gamers. We might be divided into subgroups and may bicker with each other about which genre/game is best, but we stand together when it comes to things like these.
Some of the comments on this topic though make me think otherwise. I know we Germans got a reputation of being not funny and being sissies on taking jokes. But being German apart, Gamers should just not be depicted like this.

Anyone who has ever been to any convention or festival knows that 1 second after you step out of the shower you start smelling like you've been living in a ditch. That is what happens when people live/move very close to each other in often not very ventilated space, making their entire point invalid \o/.
Apparently the show aired an apology, stating that they made a mistake by generalising and exaggerating. The writer stated he meant to create something "funny" instead of instead of insulting and hurtful, which he then says he screwed up pretty good. He also wrote an apology for his "not well thought out" comments on Facebook. Hacker also seem to have hacked the RTL website, for some time you would just get an error message and read "Gamez" on their site. The writer himself got about 100 mails, the station over 8000 (lol) complaints. The authorities are investigating whether the whole piece is illegal according to media law.

I'd say public outrage was kind of successful :D
No, it wasn't.
The "authorities" won't lift a finger. Just take a look at what BILD gets away with every single day; they're literally ruining lives with their coverage every now and then and nothing ever happens.
RTL airing an apology that's like 15 seconds long will have about the same effect as BILD printing a correction on page 8 - nada. Rien. Nix. Nothing. They've done it to make absolutely sure that they won't get any further flak for it ("Dude, we totally aired that apology, we're cool now!") and meanwhile, they cash in on the original report and on all the attention created since then.
Their apology will be forgotten, same will happen with the report, and RTL will continue to make money by pissing off whoever they want to, just because they can.
Having to do that shit still doesn't sit well with advertisers, it's at least something. Just the fact that they HATE to do this kinda stuff makes it worth it lol. Also, BILD pays millions of compensations for their shit every year. It's just that they can afford it.

Get over yourselves ladies. Every scene you can imagine that got big, faced this it nothing new or something to get all defensive about.
You guys are doing exactly what they hoped for, your giving them attention.
I don't think this thread would blow up this much and people would get this mad if it weren't true for the most part.
And even if you have a model as your gf and are a gamer so you don't feel personally concerned (or even if you're not a gamer) it's right to take offence at something like that, because it's wrong and if nobody takes offence at something like that it will just get worse (rtl isn't on the niveau of fox news, (they're actually still relatively far away from that) but they may become that way in the future if nobody cares) So don't forget people: It's right to care about stuff like that in the media, it always is.
i agree with everything you said except the bolded part. If you take offense and get all upset your just feeding the trolls. If you just shrug it off they will get bored and move on. The reason they probably have so much time on their hands is cause they are bored and don't have any hobbies
Sadly this isn't about trolls :/ it's not even about a website, which voices it's opinions, it's about a big media company, which should be neutral in it's reports and present facts and not stereotypes. And sadly there are people who don't question a report like that and those people often watch exactly these channels and their shows .
I see what you guys are saying but i still think way too many people are being way too sensitive. Just shrug it off and tell your fat friends to eat less and to stop making us look bad.
I was in cologne, and there were lots of guys there that ppl would consider "normal" and absolutely no "smelly nerds" Also lots of hot girls that were not working there btw ^^
RTL Explosiv is stupid show, should be ignored completely
