Congratulations on reaching this thread. In the rare event that you are in grandmasters league, have a scorching hot girlfriend, and somehow avoided the terrible stench of being a gamer, please refrain from telling us about it. The 10 pages of people informing us that they do, in fact, have sex should provide enough of a counterexample to any non-believers.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation. |

We all have met someone like that, so it's not as if they're wrong here, and if it doesn't pertain to you, then why do you care? Because it is perpetuating a false stereotype. Do you also think black people should just ignore racist sterotypes of "he's black and has money/a job/a car/a bike ... he must have stolen it lolololol" or how about sexist stereotypes which are demeaning towards women?Just because the stereotype does not apply to me personally does not mean that it is not offensive. Yes, like I said, if this doesn't pertain to you, then why should you care? I believe most of the people getting so defensive about it are perhaps the ones this stereotype really hits home with.
It's more about the very suggestive and very one-sided way the article perpetuates the stereotypes. Plus gamers don't have the best reputation in Germany to begin with.

Like it or not some stereotypes have a bit of truth to them. As for gamers being smelly, I can imagine that 'gamers' have a higher % chance of being less hygienic than normal. At least I can confidentially say that I'm not a stinky gamer. =P

Thank you for letting us know.

This is just Yellow Journalism at its finest. By the end of the day, I'm proud to have gaming in my life while I still retain quality hygiene and social skills. They may have a point in saying that some of the stereotypes are true but it's already gotten to the point of argumentum ad hominem and ad populeum. It seems gamers in Germany are like the gays in Southern American states.

How can they broadcast shit like this on tv. I just dont get it, it's just offending and wrong. Yes in some cases they might be true but that counts for everything. I dont think because they are gamers they are like that, i think it has to do with something else like they lack social confidence and instead of socializing they sit at home in front of their computer playing video games. I dont think the games includes a bag of poo that you have to apply to your skin.

Lmao this has to be one of the funniest threads I've read on TL in awhile. Thx OP.

SC players for some reason don't seem to fit this description so much. maybe it is just because you are from america that you see more fat people. see what I did here? yes im in north america and that definently is a huge factor. And maybe there is just a large proportion of fat people where you're from and hence you see people who are also gamers and in your mind you correlate the two, while disregarding all the fat non-gamers in your area. Anchoring bias is a lovely thing. i want to take this and expand on it a little. WHile i mostly agree with what you said. Yes north americans are fat its not a secret and you see fat people everywhere. I would still say that wow/mmo players are still fatter then the average person. So if we take that logic and apply it to europe id still think the average wow/mmo player would be fatter then the average person in europe. I dont think casuals gamers are really included into this. Despite what you may think 99% of the gamers who attened a LAN are more then just casual gamers they probably have some type of interest/passion for games.
As for the people saying "hey isnt nada(or whatever player) a trackstar and get laid on the daily?" your naming 1 person big deal how many people play the game naming one guy isn't helping your case here, its actually amusing to say something like that in defense to what this news program is propagating.

I think you've misinterpreted my post, but anyway I'll go onto another point.
Go to Blizzcon or any other video gaming convention where the majority of participants are MMORPG players. Yes, there are fat people there but I'm not going to believe this is in larger numbers than in the average population until I see factual evidence proving so.
Most MMORPG players I know are actually quite skinny. This contradicts your view of the situation, how about that? If you're just going to provide anecdotal evidence rather than cold hard facts or researched evidence then your posts don't hold much value. Your perception may be quite wrong indeed.
You cannot say that gamers (or gamers of a specific genre of game) are any heavier / lighter than average people without having evidence pointing in either direction.

Before you say "damn, they braodcast this in the german television??"
I don't know if this was said already in this thread. But RTL2 just like RTL (and other channels) are television channels that are only watched by people having a very low intelligence. People in Germany say it's the TV channel for BILD-readers who can't read. BILD is the biggest german "newspaper" that also only stupid people read. It's also no real newspaper. It's mostly big pictures and a huge badly researched headlines. Also on the first page there is always a naked women, every day. So that says it all about this german biggest and most successful media channels.
Sometimes it's so damn embarrassing to be german. There are so many stupid shitheads here who dont even know they are stupid T_T
So this should be added when watching this clip. This clip was not seen by anyone on TV having mediocre or high intelligence

it depends on what kind of gamer you are. the very high end of them, like boxer etc. have a very important image to uphold and would therefore potentially come across as desirable (in korean culture, etc.). the guy who plays a bit of racing games, warcraft and so on casually would probably be...just another average guy. i think most guys do play video games for couple hours a week.
those in the college gaming club, so called hardcore gamers, people who wear video game/razer t shirts out, i look upon them as nerds. quite undesirable imo, unless you are totally smokin. so tldr; anything in between casual avg joe to top professional pretty much = the nerd zone.

I am terribly sorry guys and I take the blame. I did not shower for 2 days, but I will now, because the water maintenance is over. Also, girls are snakes. See ya in aqualand!
They are addicted to games and because of that dont care how they look Excuse my humble opinion, but this has more to do with your career/self confidence than gaming.
Also, her grandfather was a nazi, therefore gamers have an abundance of amusement.

"Take this logic?"
There is no logic, all you have is very minor anecdotal evidence that is completely worthless.

doesn't take a genius to figure out that playing games for long periods =/= exercise of course being homer simpson on the couch is pretty much the same thing.
a person who spends more time playing games is less likely to be outside doing some kind of physical activity. even walking to and fro burns some calories. so whether you are a couch potato or a keyboard hero, simple logic will tell you that these people are less likely to be fit.
|
I do NOT smell bad...well maybe a little.... :D

i dont smell bad and i have a girlfriend. but on the other hand i dont play that much... hmm... HMMM....

"Smell bad and have no time for girls"
What of that says being fit? You don't need to exercise to have good hygiene or lady skills.
As for exercise, if you work for 8 hours (even better if it is a physical job), sleep for 8 hours, exercise for 1 hour and still play video games for 7 hours a day. 1 hour's intense focused exercise (plus anything you get while at work) a day is enough to stay quite healthy.
So you're wrong, it isn't "simple logic" explaining why these people are less likely to be fit, it is false stereotyping which results in you thinking these people are less likely to be unfit.

This is probably just to boost the sales of some upcoming Zeratul themed cologne.

If their only experience of "gamers" is a huge event like gamescom, I'm not surprised to hear that opinion to be perfectly frank.Of course, gamers all around them normally, they just didn't realise it, so they're judging purely based on who they see at gamescom. I've been to these kind of events before, and of course many of whom they attract are the most fanatical of gamers - some of which DO fit the stereotype.
Almost all of the gamer population are just regular people of course though, without any kind of odour/relationship/addiction problems - it'll just take a while for public opinion to change as gaming becomes more and more accepted.
