I use ableton live, saving for suite, and a very large electric piano I bought for playing the piano, I then discovered I could use it as a midi controller. I'm still trying to learn the basics; there's a pretty steep learning curve. I do produce house and some dub and hardstyle. Its fun

Nice, I write in Cubase 5.0, Use, Albino, Vanguard, Sylenth , Gladiator, Predator. Been writing for about 8 years, stuff on my soundcloud is a bit old, got a few releases.
Nice thing you have going here, I produce psytrance http://soundcloud.com/terrorbyte , would be nice to also get VST guides/demos in this thread.

Do you have a lot of experience with DJing psy-trance? I really want to start to DJ psy-trance/ambient and perhaps some other electronic genres. But i have no knowledge nor piror experience. Do you think i should start doing it on my computer? And if i buy decks + mixer that wont sound really shitty, how much will it set me back (used or new)? Also what are your tips on beatmatching and so forth.
Are there any good guides to getting started in those genres?

Peace

I started my professional DJ career yesterday. Me and my friend got our own club event. Had a music quiz, played some Benny Goodman, played some Beastie Boys, played some Prodigy. Shit was wild.

Other than that, I've been noobing around with Virtual DJ and a Reloop midi-controller. The controller is pretty shitty though, so every time I want to make a mix I get discouraged. Hopefully I can look past that and start to make some mixes. I'm going to try and get some gigs at other clubs as well.

GLHF to my fellow DJ's!

I'm just getting into producing now using Fruity Loops. Anyone have any recommendations on how to get started? Some good tutorials/forums for beginner/intermediate level? Or should I just experiment and see what I come up with? Mostly interested in making downtempo/mellow hip-hop beats. Cheers

I spent several months learning and getting comfortable on FL only to wish I had initially invested all that time learning and getting comfortable with Ableton. Just a heads up; I feel you can do much more with Ableton, and the interface is far better suited for complex automation.

Youtube is your friend. Start by watching introductory videos that give you a tour of the interface. Once you get comfortable with the interface you can start learning how to make beats, and from there, synths.

Been fiddleing around with Ableton Live for around 2 months now. Made a few songs with some guides, and I'm currently in the process of my third self made song, but I'm kinda stuck as of right now, so if anyone would have a listen and gimme some critique I'd be glad^___^
Shit's supposed to be Moombahton and its not properly mixed etc etc.

Also, any advise on midicontrollers and general equipment for beginners? Aka what to get.

I've actually been wanting to get into music production for the longest time. I was planning on purchasing FL in a bit but other than that I'd also appreciate some advice on equipment and such for beginners.

Also, would most of you recommend Ableton over FL?

What are you going to produce ? How do you plan to produce (I mean, do you prefer to turn your ideas into music, or experiment with sounds on the fly)
Watch this -

It shows when Ableton is better. Other than that, there's successful people for every sequencer, and no sequencer is better than any other - it all depends on the way you do your work. The same goes for hardware equipment, no-one can really help you if you don't specify your needs as a producer
Yeah, whatever

Freeloss_ca I can't thank you enough, that tutorial on chords was so insightful. I've never had any kind of formal musical education and that was a great introduction to music theory for me. I've always just built chords and melodies through "trial and error" just by trying random notes until I found something that sounded pleasant to me. Again, thank you!!!

I do mixing, mastering, and production for a living. But i do dabble in electronic music as my side projects. The software i use for work are pro-tools, abelton, and cubase. I use pro tools exclusively for my mixing and mastering. The other programs are for live work/electronic music, mainly dubstep and trance. I'll get to posting some of my work later.
