That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn, world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed it off an aux speak,, grunt, no, strength, The ladder starts to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site. Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped. Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.
It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn. Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down. Watch your heel crush, crushed. Uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.
It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone) It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine. (I feel fine)

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev. Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.
I don't think a scenario can happen that will kill all 6/7 billion+ on the planet. Human will is so strong that there will always be a few survivors especially with all the disaster preparations and underground bunkers we have now. The only true end of the human race I see is the Sun blowing up but I voted for Asteroid/Meteor Apocalypse because that would be the most likely thing to kill 95%+ of humans; although a huge volcanic eruption is pretty likely too, but those sort of fit into the same category.
I'm glad you asked buddy, me and friends have recently being laughing at all the end of the world shit thats plagued our thinking for years, and I reached this conclusion: We all keep guessing days that have some sort of significance, be it religious significance, some random ancient culture end of calender, or some shockingly close date to the TL Attack return. I imagine we'll all keep passing these buy, making new guesses, laughing them off as they pass UNTIL.... The second messiah comes, or some old lady who knows shit that comes in the future and they happen to be right, of course this time we'll be like 'Lol it won't happen, lets all laugh at that day' and when the day does come where the sky is raining blood, plagues turning us all into zombies leaving a short window for Bischu/<insert pro thats on tilt> to win a tournament before the world ends. I have spoken, it shall be written down and revered for years to come.
Either world war 3 or earth collides with asteroid / another planet.
If we are lucky and survive all of that, earth will be consumed by sun 5 billion years from now. But I think that won't concern us (if there is still human race), because earth will be depleted and we will be living on another planet.
//edit: I'm hoping for zombie apocalypse, at least I'll have some fun before I die
I voted other because its most likely that there will be an epic fight between Charlie Sheen and Chuck Norris which will cause a implosion of the earths core. Could of maybe gone under a couple of that categories but I doubt it's what you had in mind when you made them. Will be a fun day, my money's on charlie sheen.
Ivoted it must be an Asteroid, because i think even if we fuck up and break a nuclear war loose, someone/something will survive until the sun blows up in 5 billion years or until (and i think this will happen earlier) we get shattered by a huge asteroid ! so long
Honestly, a lot of these options are plausible. So I will go with my top three: 1) Asteroids, meteors etc 2) Environmental apocalypse and 3) Viruses and stuff. I wouldn't mind a zombie apocalypse though. Neither would I mind a rabid squirrel apocalypse lawl
I think it will be an environmental apocalypse coupled with nuclear apocalypse. Some day there is going to be some sort of shortage whether its petrol, food, or whatever, and there is going to be a war to end all wars.
Humans will just kind of slowly expand to other planets and galaxy's once the proper technologies are developed. Once humans dominate many many planets, our place in the universe will be ensured forever. We should have plenty of time to do this b4 the sun blows up, destroying Earth, but not killing any humans. So earth will be just giblets, but who says the "world" has to ever "end".
Humans are pretty damn durable. I wouldn't be too worried. There's a bit of a risk as long as we're just on one base, but as soon as we get a good terraforming process started we can expand to our in-base natural (the moon).
Zombie apocalypse is just as realistic as werewolf/vampire apocalypse,,,,or some God releasing his rage upon us,,,,its just not happening.
Environmental apocalypse is not very likely either. Tsunamis, storms, floods, earthquakes etc are simply not devastating enough for it to be apocalyptic.
Nuclear apocalypse is imo the most likely scenario but virus apocalypse, meteor/astroid apocalypse may also happen. Even an alien apocalypse is not totally impossible.
1 of these will ofc have to happen before the sun becomes a red giant and terminate all life on earth for good.
This will be a slow process, but I think the rising infertility rate will eventually get to a point where death rates far exceed birth rates. This will result in a population decline, eventually ending with our complete extinction.
It's strange that "sun blows up" gets the most clicks given that by the time that happens, the earth will be so hot that we won't be able to live on it... So, we'll be dead or gone from Earth well before the sun blows up.
Howcome the world running out of resources isn't a choice? with the current population growth and how fast people are consuming food oil etc It seems like the most plausible cause of the end of the world.
I personally doubt that humanity will destroy itself by either nuclear war or polluting the planet and obviously religious raptures or apocalypses are just absurd, by far and away the most likely fate of the planet will be the sun obliterating it and if it isn't that it will be some other horrific cosmic event.
"Grey goo" is missing from the poll. As our technology becomes more advanced it will be easier and easier to cause an apocalypse. Eventually some fanatic will be successful and if mankind hasn't spread to multiple worlds by then we're fucked.
As time goes on, stars will continue to be born from gas clouds, but as they burn out, they will either stay behind as either dwarf stars, or in case of a supernova, black holes. Galaxies will, due to gravitational attraction, merge into local galactic clusters, which will move further and further away from eachother. After a point, due to the expansion of the universe, and red shift, no galactic cluster will be able to observe another.
With less and less free hydrogen remaining in the universe, there will come a time when stars will no longer be born. Eventually, the last dwarf star will burn out, leaving the universe in complete darkness.
Black holes, dead stars, and the occasional bits of rock will interact with eachother in such a way that eventually, most dead stars will be ejected out of their galactic clusters, leaving behind small clusters of black holes, which will merge into supermassive black holes. Eventually, even the black holes will evaporate, due to Hawking radiation.
The only thing that will be left behind is a diffuse, cold, chaotic soup of elementary particles, with the occasional stellar husk.
At least, that's how the world ends, if the universe is expanding.
I voted for nuclear but kinda regret it. A lot of these options will kill 99.9999...% of people but don't account for the remotely located people, like: - remote island areas - cruise ships - war ships - underground bunkers with years of provisions
Zombies and viruses will have a hard time getting to those areas.
I don't think humanity still will be around when the sun destroys the earth. Not sure what will wipe out humanity however, propably astroid or somekind of virus/disease.
The sun won't expire for billions of years still, I think people underestimate the amount of time that is. Humans have gone from hunter/gatherer to current technology in like 1/100000 of that time.
So many options, so few votes. Could be a nearby supernova or GRB. AI taking over the world and killing all humans. Some sort of massive industrial accident. But my favourite is an ecological collapse that wipes out bacteria crucial to our survival.
I think the chances of humans living to the end of the sun's life is almost nil. And if we do make it that far it won't be a problem to survive that too.
I honestly doubt humanity will be able to survive until sun's fuel runs out. That's millions of years. I'm quite sure we are a lot more likely kill each other with some ridiculous weapons, virus, asteroids, hell, even alien invasion seems more likely.

More like billions. We're talking about a million times the age of human civilization.
1. Zombie Apocalypse obv. 2. The world is ending in October, 05/21 is only the rapture. You guys are so silly, you're not really listening to the one guy who knows the future!
I think a supervirus outbreak is more likely than any of those things... Yeah shit can get real fucked if nukes go crazy, but I don't think it will end humanity as we know it. Thank god [lol?] that the religious apocalypse is the least popular at the moment.
As 1 other person already pointed out earlier, we wouldnt even get close to the end of the sun. As the sun starts to burn itself out it gets hotter and hotter causing massive heat to hit the earth making it absolutely unhabitable. All of the water on earth would boil and evaporate thousands of years before the sun actually supernovas.

Leran your stuff, our sun is not going to supernova. Our star will become a red giant when all of the hydrogen that it uses as "fuel" has ran out, and it will start to "burn" helium. Learn science bud.
It's definitely most likely to be by our own hands. The sun doesn't blow up for 4 billion years and we already have the technology to predict and divert meteors. That leaves us killing ourselves by nuclear weapons, by a human created super biovirus, and and singularity like robotic annihilation.
Now they're coming out again, these crazy doomsayers ...
Just because Sol is going to change soon, it doesn't mean the end of the world. I'd say the first significant change will occur in 10^14 years. But even that won't be the end of world, just the end of the world as we now it.
the countries with nuclear arsenals of that size aren't that stupid. nukes are more tools for political posturing nowadays.
Asteroid/Meteor Apocalypse (26)
very pluasible. but we still probably won't live that long. probably going to have to wait some millions of years for an end of life asteroid/meteor to hit.
Supervirus Apocalypse (18)
the lucky people with innate immunity will survive and repopulate
Environmental Apocalypse (9)
don't know what this entails
Alien Apocalypse (9)
I do believe in alien life. I do not believe we are important enough to spend time and resources on.

Thats what I meant to say, got the 2 mixed up. No need to jump down my throat about it. The process of turning into a red giant is what heats up the earth substantially.
Super virus seems the most likely overall, since most of the other causes of apocalyptic catastrophe aren't being actively researched in multiple countries around the world.

Life on Earth is cureently estimated to be sustainable for around 500 millions years, after which the atmosphere will be completely impossible to live in and so we will never have to worry about the sun blowing up.
Also the logistics of living on another planet are ridiculously complicated which is a major setback :/. I think the end of the world wont come as everyone pictures it. Humans will almost definately end their own lifes through wars when resources come into short supply.
Thankfully for me I'm gonna be dead before this happens. So to be honest, I'd rather try to be oblivious to all of it and get on with enjoying my life. I got some Starcraft to play :D

everything else is silly or bullshit
So when you say "we won't live that long" do you mean your generation or humanity? If you mean humanity then how will they extinct? Calling posibilities bullshit doesn't answer the question you know.
I read in a Warhammer book a quote from some scientist in Warhammer lore. HE said: Science is going to kill humanity, not with their weapons of mass destruction, but by finally proving that there is no god. Mankind will be driven to madness, knowing that they are utterly alone in a neverending universe.
Something along those lines..
I dunno, that quote stuck with me, it feels smart ^^
One of those gigant stars will go supernova and shoot the beam of gammarays at us killing everything. Somewhere they said that it is quite likely.
On May 22 2011 05:50 Roeder wrote: I hope so much for zombie apocalypse.
I'm having a terrific plan on how to survive.
My plan at first is to infiltrate the hordes of zombies, surviving on the brains of the living. In a few weeks the zombies bodies will have decomposed to the point they can't move any longer and chase me. Brilliant isn't it.
On May 22 2011 05:52 HwangjaeTerran wrote: One of those gigant stars will go supernova and shoot the beam of gammarays at us killing everything. Somewhere they said that it is quite likely.
Its not likely. Your thinking of a Gamma Ray Burst and it comes from the collision of Neutron Stars I think. I love Neutron Stars, they are so facinating. Sorry about the Physics orgy by the way.

Zombie apocalypse would be pretty bad for Europe actually, because we don't have enough guns and rednecks.
But we can bore the zombies to death with political correctness.
Zombies are people too!
They are just misunderstood. They will intergrate, just give them time. If the Zombie bites your head off, its their culture, whos to say its any better than ours?

True. We need to let others cultures in. You don't have to bite other peoples heads off, but you must accept, that some cultures do. Therefore you should rather point your finger on yourself before you start pointing at others.

Nah, you just need enough of those and it's gonna happen.
The human race will be dead or have moved to another planet long before the sun dies, it won't blow up anyways, its not big enough. It will expand to a red giant, lose a chunk of its mass in to space and settle down as a white dwarf. Leaving behind a very pretty planetary nebula
But before that happens it will get very hot and basically roast the Earth, in about 2 billion years.....
Thats how the world will end. Scientific fact.
How will human existence end? Who knows, could be an ice age, could be an impact event, could be nuclear war or a thousand other things.

Doesn't matter how well you prepare, if a meteor/comet like the one that killed the dinosaurs hits.... whether you are underground or not at the time, eventually you will run out of food and all the things you used to eat will be long dead. Basically any event that kills off 90% of the species on Earth would kill all humans in the end, we are too big and need to many thing to survive.... only the smallest animals survive large extinction events.
I think we will just evolve or be replaced by another species. No idea when but probably well before the sun explodes or we are hit by a big enough astroid/meteor. Or we could wipe out almost all life on earth with some kind of technology, intentional or not.
I don't think the sun blowing up could end the human race, because before that we've been eliminated some other way or if we really do last for a billion years, then we'd have such technology and power to even move our earth and create our own sun, or be able to terraform another planet.
It'll be pretty hard to completely extinct the human race. If a massive nuclear war would happen there'd still be small areas that would be suitable for living. Or if a asteroid hit our planet we'd either be able to predict it many years ahead and be able to change its course by sending rockets close to it which will be able to pull the asteroid just a tiny bit for it to dodge the earth. Or if it hit, humans would still be able to survive underground in bunkers and the like.
I can't imagine a virus to end it all either, a small amount of people could isolate themselves from the rest and be able to survive until the virus has disappeared.
It would haft to be something totally unexpected like the earth's core cooling down for some kind of reason which will freeze us all to death, or something like all energy resources on the planet completely depletes, but that'd also be quite unlikely because there's so much energy able to be used(including sun power).
On May 22 2011 03:16 Pick wrote: There is a big difference between world ending and human race ending.
The Sun going super nova will probably be the only thing to take out the planet.
As for humans... my money is on some kind of super virus.
Sun can't go super nova not enough mass for it to do so. It will bloat into a red giant star then burn out into a white dwarf. They do say that the sun will get more brighter and hotter befor it dies which will lead to mercury becoming consumed by fire and the earth will suffer the same fate... or possible just be so close to the run it will burn away our atomosphere and the earth will be a cozy 600 degree's on the surface.
There are several difficult hurdles for earth-based life in the future:
- In 1 billion years or less all oceans on earth will be vaporized, Earth's atmosphere will be similar to that of Venus. (according to our current understanding of the evolution of solar-like stars and terrestrial planets) It is hard to imagine life on Earth existing beyond that point. The last remnants of life will probably be residing in the last remnants of the ocean before they are wiped out. Some bacteria could survive in the atmosphere.
- A little bit more controversial: the CO2 levels might decrease over the next 500 million years so that photosynthesis becomes inefficient. Land-based plants using the C3 carbon fixation would be the first to become extinct, those using the more efficient C4 carbon fixation would last a little bit longer (e.g. sugar cane). This would be the end of the flora and fauna as we know it, but life goes on
- As for the final fate of the earth I am not quite sure, I would have to read up on it, as it depends on a few variables. The Sun will lose quite some mass before becoming a red giant, which causes Earth's orbit to expand. this might be enough for Earth to escape the Sun's atmosphere (well, not entirely, but enough so that the drag forces do not cause it to spiral in and get destroyed).
In that case, Earth (which is unrecognizable after it crashed with the moon) will end as a lifeless rock orbiting a similar sized white dwarf, the remnant core of the Sun. This WD will slowly cool until it finally fades, but that will take many many billion years.
edit: I see some people actually went through the trouble and computed Earth's future according to our current understanding:
The sun will explode in 5 billion years or so regardless of what we do. I think humanity will be gone before then though, nuclear war won't wipe out humanity. We will probably all get a disease or another meteor will hit.
I think a vampire outbreak would be the coolest way for the human race to go out, fuck zombies.. So boring. Most plausible is probably a super virus, or aliens.
Actually, none of the poll options reflect my views on the matter.
The sun is a boiling hot meat ball. God is eating spaghetti bolognesé. The only reason he hasn't eaten our sun yet, is because he hasn't gotten around to it, and theres a lot of other suns that are more succulent and juicy.
The boring answer is that the human race will end by evolution. We'll change to the point where we become a different species or even possibly diverge into multiple species.
I actually think one of those things is bound to happen one day. With how fast things go these days, how technologically strong we are and how linked we all are due to globalization, it's only a matter of time before something really bad happens.
Whether it's a bunch of crazy leaders pushing the wrong button, or a really bad virus, even if the odds aren't that great, maths tell us it will happen eventually.
Spreading mankind out would at least make sure some of our civilisation survives, which is why I think spatial exploration is the most important thing for mankind at this point. But we're too busy fighting stupid wars...
i feel really sorry for those who believe this crap. there was this story about some grandfather who euthanized his 2 cats and his 2 birds because he didn't want them to suffer when he went up during the rapture. i bet he's going to feel like a jackass in 3 hours from now.
I like variation, wouldn't be nice if all of them happen at the same time? If so u could choose yourself what way you want to go.
Or we are just pets from aliens, they observe us and laugh all the time about us and our strange theories, also we could end as food for them, wouldn't be that bad, at least we would be useful ^^

probably. it's got to be at 6pm somewhere in the world right? hahaha

when it becomes may 22, does it mean satan has won?
It depends there are two scenarios (well three one being highly unlikely)
We colonize space and are able to become independent on off world colonies within the next 500yrs or so at which point we become essentially invulnerable to any sort of extinction besides the end of time itself.
However if we don't do this and chill on this earth we use up all of
Ever heard the story of Peter & the wolf? Where Peter constantly shouts "wolf wolf" to the villagers, and the wolf never appears, and then when the real wolf comes around, no one will believe him.
I personally believe the Bibles has the truth about world ending, but before that there will be countless of false "prophecies". Some people don't get that the Bible never gives a date to the end times, only God will know, and it is not ours to know when. It can be any day. And when that day comes, almost no one will be prepared, it will come out of the blue sky, and only those who has their hearths right before God will be saved.

well, no
the wolf comes into town and kills everyone that's the point of the story..
Well, I would think the most likely scenario would be caused by an environmental change, but it probably wouldn't be the end of the world. Most likely a rather hot/cold age as part of a natural progression of our planetary ecosystem would set back population by a large number, but I doubt it would end us completely or ruin the future habitability of Earth.
I saw some docomentary where they ranked what the possible death of mankind would. No1 was man made viruses. They said that there are some russian viruses that they made during cold war and those could transform into really nasty things if the wrong man got the recepie how to make them.
I voted other, because I dont think it'll be any of those things. But I do believe than mankind will doom ourself in the end someday. It's just in our nature sadly . But you can always hope their comes some huge wars that'll kill alot of the population, before things gets to out of hand.
The gay option doesn't make sense because gay people can still fuck the opposite sex just to reproduce. It also wouldn't cause the world to end just humans to die out ( like a few other options). Voted the sun blows up
There needs to be a clearer definition. Do you mean for the human race? Do you mean the 'as we know it'? Do you mean for the planet entirely? Do you mean all life forms on earth? Do you mean the universe (cuz the universe is a part of the world.. obviously)? etc etc.
Voted the gays. Because all of us who actively follow progaming know that certain picture threads are liable to make the most manly of men question his sexuality.
But zombies. Fuck. That's a very real possibility.
Why is "Everyone turns gay and we somehow forget how to do artificial insemination" at 4th with 9% and 56 votes (at the time I saw the poll)? lol ...why is the option even there <__<
I would like a more precise definition for the "end of the world" as well, though.
The gay option doesn't make sense because gay people can still fuck the opposite sex just to reproduce. It also wouldn't cause the world to end just humans to die out ( like a few other options). Voted the sun blows up
the bible says jesus will come like a "thief in the night." So which this means is everyone could have been pushing for today, but as soon as they all think they're free tomorrow, he'll come down and be like GOTCHA BITCHES.
in 2030 there is an astroroid the size of the rosebowl headed to earth and if that misses us in 4.6 billion years our galaxy will collide with another galaxy before the sun blows up
If anything wipes out the Human race, it will be some kind of serious virus. Something to the tune of Ebola going airborne.
Besides that, nothing comes to mind. Nuclear weaponry will never be enough to wipe out the world, especially due to the fact that no nation, rogue or otherwise, could launch even one ballistic missile without it being tracked by NORAD, let alone to 100+ it would take to throw us back into the dark ages.

And even if hundreds of nuclear weapons were launched around the world, it is probable that humans would survive, since we inhabit the large majority of the world, including small islands. It would take so many nuclear weapons to wipe everyone out, I'm not sure it's feasible even in theory.
As far as catastrophes go, even major climate changes would not wipe humanity out. We have the power to adapt, even if a certain % of humanity would perish because of famine or other such problems.
As far as super-virii go (as in, untreatable and unstoppable, which in theory is possible if a virus or bacteria evolves continuously to defend against everything we throw at them, up to a point where even substances that destroy our own bodies would not harm them), I think people would just adapt their way of live to avoid it as much as possible, even if it required drastic measures... I don't think the entire world population could ever be taken out by disease.
An event on a much larger scale (meteors, sun exploding, galaxies colliding) should be a safe bet though, as I doubt humanity will ever discover a way to travel space in extreme distances in a way to avoid such events by migrating around the universe. I feel such events are the only ones we can't adapt to at all.
Even if everyone on the planet collaborated on a space colonization program, it's simply unfeasible because of our life span vs the distance and speed we can reach with a space shuttle (and also, a small malfunction could equal the death of the human race, even if we somehow made a gigantic ship to take us abroad).
Overall, certain events could lead to mass deaths, but extinction is not something that will happen to humanity in the near future.
The world does not end with humanity. Believe it or not, the world is bigger than us.
But anyway, here's a great poem on the topic:
Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.

Maybe the Universe is bigger than us, but Earth will have human life on it until it becomes a barren husk of a planet.
discounting religous eschatology, high chance the sun will die in 5 billion years, temporarily expanding and engulfing the earth. If it doesnt happen, eventually it would be destroyed by a black hole sooner or later near the end of the universe,as stars die out and turn into black holes. Anyways, life would be unable to exist in such harsh conditions. When the universe finally dies out due to heat death, there will be no stars, nothing. Why continue to live? Unless we can somehow teleport to another dimension

I voted "other" because we will make ourselves extinct by - nuclear accidents - denial of global warming (and thus more extreme weather conditions) - everyone turning gay - inventing robots to do every menial task for us and feeding the global warming / nuclear accidents through the required energy

Have a little more faith in your fellow man, when the world does end it'll be on purpose. Someday somebody is going to have the technology and they're not going to be able to resist the urge to create giant killer robots to destroy the world. Hell, I can't blame them, it'll be so cool!
as long as we siege up our main and have a planetary at our natural I don't see an end coming any time soon... especially not zombies. perhaps the gays though =(
Meh i guess i don't care that much so i voted "Sun blows up". I would prefer an alien invasion though. Something zerglike that we can fight untill they wipe us out.
The world population can decrease quite easily in my opinion. A couple of earthquakes and some tsunamis here and there and boom there goes a nice chunk of humanity, not to mention nukes, wars and the like.
(You'll see the difference. And its getting better all the time.)
Edit: After reading a few of these.. its cute how it gets more and more unlikely the farther the thread goes. I put more stock in a squirrel or zombie uprising than a GRB destroying our neck of the woods before we do.
It's not going to end. There is no beginning. There is no end. They are figments of our imagination just like imagining a purple dinosaur holding up the earth.
I am hoping for zombie apocalypse (if something has to happen) beacuse then I could be the star of my own zombie movie and finally get use for all my sharp-edged weaponry
Nuclear Apocalypse. It's why my goal is to just buy my own island and be left the fuck alone. I can watch the whole world go to shit from my own personal shore line.
A) After colonization Mars, The Moon and possibly other planets/moons in our solar system, we fail to travel and colonizise planets outside of our solar system, we just die of old age(that is if immortality hasn't been introduced to humans.)
B) Many scientists belive that time will end in 5 billion years and a new big bang will erupt at some point

Sure, 99.99% of all humans may be wiped out, but science and ingenuity can keep our species as a whole alive, be it underground or anywhere else.
I agree with this, I believe we've come too far for humans to die out completely. The only way I see humanity ending is if something destroys the world. In every scenario I can think of it seems to always go back to "Well I suppose a small group of people would be in a very secure vault with food and water production machines. Within these vaults or bomb shelters I see people being safe from almost anything and able to slowly reproduce."
On May 23 2011 00:17 scribe123456 wrote: no mention of global warming from anyone on this thread... I find that interesting. (unless I missed it)
Yeah I was curious about that too. I think that's covered under environmental apocalypse in the original poll though, its just no one brought it up since then. Although its likely that global warming could have apocalyptic consequences, I don't think its to the extent that most people interpret "the end of the world" as meaning; that being the end of all human life. There's probably going to be some safe corner of the world, where you can still grow crops, or where genetically modified crops can be grown in a secure man-made structure.
But the same would also be true for nuclear war. There would surely be bunkers where people could survive, not every corner of the world would be destroyed completely. I guess in both cases it depends how severe it is, and on certain factors - like whether people get to shelter in time or have prepared ahead of time.
I think the best options would be an asteroid impact or a super virus.
Another option could be that we invent a very powerful technology in the future that is capable of destroying the world if we're not careful enough - not necessarily a more powerful bomb, but something analogous to the creation of the atomic bomb. Maybe it rips the fabric of space time or something
the end of the world, meaning destruction of the planet, can only happen if the sun blows up, a meteor hits earth so hard that it leaves it's orbit and crashes into sun or w/e or some superior species destroys it. like what happened to char or what the deathstar was made for. but its not likely that anything of that will happen in the future.
whereas the end of mankind can happen by nuclear apocalypse, making 100% of earth's surface unlivable or (again) another species comes across, is better in every aspect and has the will to enslave or kill the human race as such. oh, another possibility might be the green house effect, heating up earth to a point where people are not able to recover from.
The world will ends when we send BattleCruisers and then Sarah Kerrigan somehow traced to the UED and then send in thousands and thousands of Mutalisks to our planet.

Ye, it's not like you have a problem as well when the whole world was getting bombed with nuclear bombs. Just chill at your island not getting irradiated at all. -_-
Earth will be destroyed as the Sun does, whether or not it gets to a point that it cannot support life before that is dependant on so many things
Earth may end up like Mars and dry up for whatever reason, or an asteroid collision may occur or a supernova could happen (relatively) nearby etcetc within the next couple billion years, but by then I'm sure 'we' (as in our far far offspring) wouldn't be recognisable as humans today so I won't count that
I don't see humans being killed off altogether by disease or Earth-based environmental disasters (global warming, super volcanoes or whatever), and so for the future of humans I think it depends on whether or not we can find and colonise Earth-like planets before we kill ourselves, through a) overpopulation and therefore destruction of sustainable resources, or b) man made disasters (nuclear war etc)
The Sun will never explode. It's not large enough, instead it will become a dwarf in it's end state. As the Sun gets older it will become a red giant. Eventually devouring the Earth but even before then all the oceans will dry up and nothing will be left living on earth. It will be like mars.
If human beings don't have the technology to reach new solar systems by then we are going to become extinct. The nearest star is 4.2 light years away. One light second is 186,000 miles. You figure it out.
Honestly? it will probably be from some giant meteor or planet colliding with us, or some kind of gamma ray burst. Earth is due for another mass-extinction in the next couple hundred million years.
Barring that, I doubt humanity can last another 1000 years with the way we're so keen on blowing ourselves up. I wouldnt be surprised if a majority of the worlds population wasn't wiped out on the day WW3 breaks loose.
Pro Virus/Bacteria: Our idiotic use of antiotics everywhere. It's like a super speed up for the evolution of ultra resistent bacteria. It might come to the point where that will severely backfire at us and kill a lot of people, because it will compromise with our improvements in medicine. Perhaps up the the point that a lot of knowledge will be lost when really many people die. Perhaps we will make it to the scientific stage that we won't even need antibiotics anymore, but that is anything but safe to say! Environmental: Who knows, maybe everything will snowball up at a certain point. There was a really cool (and serious/adult) manga oneshot about this topic, "Hotel", where global warming reaches a point where enormous amounts of methane stored in the seas is released and the whole earth warms up to like 100°C, wiping out humanity. I found this scenario unlikely, but who knows. Link:Hotel (It's only 40 pages, definitly worth a read)
Asteroid: Well... always possible. Still, I think since there currently is no asteroid closeby, we will have the technology to deflect incoming asteroids as soon as one comes. Just a very small impact is enough to change the direction a little and put us at safety. This means, unless there is a loss of knowledge (which I do not expect. Our knowledge is internationally available, just the downfall of one or two cultures won't destroy it all!) this is unlikely
Nuclear: Hm, who knows. If there is a catastrophe like that in Japan, with the initial circumstances just being a little bit worse, it can become really ugly. But I don't see it wiping out humanity, not even a whole continent.
Overall: I think it would take humanity a giant chain of bad events to get destroyed, but who knows what happens over the millenia or even millions of years. Well, probably it will be the sun ultimately...
Aah zombies finally being added. I believe we will become immortal/not age in about 50 years. Then in about 300 years rabies will mutate, possibly artificially by scientists, and we will have zombies.
On May 23 2011 02:32 Terrakin wrote: magnetic pole reversal, once that happens the earth will be destroyed by the moon..
No, that does not happen... there have been several pole reversals in the history of earth and moon, and obviously it is still up on the sky and not down here...
But on the other hand this raises an interesting part about radiation, because during the process of reversal (taking four- to ninethousand years) the surface has less protection against sun radiation, according to wikipedia. This increases the fluctuation of life forms because there are more mutations.
This might lower life expectancy of humans when it happens, who knows.
I'm not sure if perhapps the Van Allen Belt could crumble under certain circumstances, because that might kill lifeforms like humans.
Depends what the term "the world" holds. Our lives as we know it will definatly change with nuclear war/winter, but I'm pretty sure we'll outlive it as species.
If we are talking about the planet, only the sun will cause it to eventually be destroyed.
As for humans as whole, well that depends. Considering we can imagine to build on our previous success as species in technological advancement especially in last couple hundred years, the possibilities should be endless.

I would love to see the world end by aliens - I dont believe in aliens as kind of a 'big brother' that watch us and are aiming to eliminate us - because I would like to see those fucking retarded religious people all over the world realizing that humans created god and we are NOT the center of the fucking universe.

So, you think god exists?
I think he meant 'created' god in the sense of that people have come up with the idea of god and thus 'created' it

I personally think Apophis or another asteroid will eventually leave the world uninhabitable for all living organisms or atleast to the same extend the last one that took out the dinosaurs did. Stephen Hawking said this is common for Earth to get struck every "100 million years or so", which of course can't and isn't going to be perfectly accurate but does make sense. Even if it misses us Apophis passing the Earth going much faster than a bullet will be an interesting thing to see. In any case I probably will be dead for a massive amount of time before the Earth or the human species is wiped out so I dont really care, everything thats made is one day destroyed/changed.

Well, taking into account the human resilience, once we start colonizing the space, it would take A LOT of effort to completely wipe out the human race. But we're talking about the world here I guess, so I'm gonna say some kind environmental/virus disaster which are in my opinion the most likely. Nuclear maybe as well but I dunno ...
Slowly and quietly as birth rates fall below replacement as happens in all developed countries. I guess that's in line with "everyone turns teh ghey" Well I guess that's just the end of humanity, who knows about the world, I guess the sun has to go out eventually so probably that.
I voted nuke but even if its not nukes I'm sure that it will be humans somehow. Five billions years is freaking long time, like you think you learned a lot of history for your world history class? Multiply that by a million or so, I'm sure we screw up somewhere along the way and destroy earth, I just hope we get people somewhere else first.
Perhaps it's all those dystopian SF novels I've read in my life, but I think it will be a 1-2-3 combo of super-diseases, environmental cataclysms and aliens making themselves known to us.
Having said that, I'm not worried for the human race in the slightest. We've come so far, thus the Universe has some kind of plan for us. Future will be a blast.
We've been one-basing for quite a while we're bound to run out of resources eventually. Unless we expand or pull some resources out of our arses we will just slowly starve to death.
I've played alot of left 4 dead, and I can honestly say the best way for the world to end would in fact be a zombie apocalypse. Now that the CDC has released a Zombie Apocalypse guide it's on the horizon. Face it folks, the zombie apocalypse is coming. Better prepare and buy a nice axe, and the same amount of shotgun shells as food and water you eat and drink per year. I've already barricaded my doors and windows, you should too.

nuclear apocalypse is probably the most likely, since there's so many nukes already just waiting to be detonated. I'd say of the others, robot apocalypse is next in line. theoretically all you need is one machine that becomes self conscious to start a massive chain of events that leads to world domination
Shadow of the Wind Television, my dear Daniel, is the Antichrist and I can assure you that after only three or four generations people will no longer even know how to fart on their own. Humans will return to living in caves, to medieval savagery, and to the general state of imbecility that slugs overcame back in the Pleistocene era. Our world will not die as a result of the bomb, as the papers say – it will die of laughter, of banality, of making a joke of everything, and a lousy joke at that.
A zombie apocalypse would be really cool, but if there's anything that'll end the human race with the sun still in place my guess is some kind of a virus.
I think the world would be to prepared for a zombie apocalypse since all the shows and games that revolve around them have came out.
No one will actually know when it will happen so it makes me happy when people guess and think the world will end on a certain date/time because I know the chances of it happening then are slim.
So the Yellowstone national park, thats actually a volcano, blows up at the same time a solar flare. The ash from Yellowstone protects the world from the flare so we don't all die.
The ice caps melt and cool water stops the warm currents that travel around the oceans and the earth starts to freeze over. At the point the religious nut jobs are all going crazy. A secondary solar flare, much smaller then the first, hits and melts the frozen earth washing the ash way and warming up the sea.
Two rival religious gangs form and get their hand on nuclear weapons, they decide to use them relulting in a large portion of the globe becoming uninhabitable for all life except the squirels mutated from because of the fall out.
The squirels become hostile and start bitting people which begins the spread of a supervirus which takes over the brain of the host causing them to be near zombie like in every way.
Then the guys from left 4 dead, the bloak from deadrising, will smith, bruse willis and scoobydoo kill everyone before having an orgy and all contracting aids from scooby and dying slowly while singing "Who let the dogs out"
Edit: Then an alien warship fires a MEGABEAMTHINGY at a robot deathstar but misses and destroys our solar system, creating a nice firework display for those far enough away, the robots, to enjoy it before being vaporised by a second MEGAMEAMTHINGY to the FACE
I don't know what exactly the OP means. The world end as the earth is destroyed or the human civilization is wiped out. These 2 are 2 very difference things. As for the earth got destroy, its very likely that when the sun burnt up so the first option. As for human civilization got wiped out, well could be anyday from now, we human are really good at self-destruction. Maybe a few decades from now we will manage to nuke ourself off the surface of the earth. :D
when our sun is expanding at her final phase of live, our world will end.
all those "end of world" predictions are not worth anything. just for fun: Failed Doomsday list
in case you mean the extinction of humankind... i dont have any guesses. i thing were going to survive for a long time, even if 99% die - our reproduction cycle is fast and simple enough that were going to live through it
In 5 Billion Years the sun will explode. In 4 Billion Years the Milky Way Galaxy and Andromeda Galaxy are going to COLLIDE.
I really hope there is an afterlife just so I can see that happen, although in all likelihood such a collision will occur over many millions of years.
The Earth will last until then unless we destroy it with weapons. It's a big-ass planet, and even after we're gone its resources will still recover. I'd hope that mankind has actually left by then and gone elsewhere, so we'll increase our chances of survival. It's kind of disgusting that we haven't progressed farther already thanks to Obama and his cutbacks to the space program and next Moon landing.
Despite the possibilities of the world ending being so interesting, I'm dying to know what is going to happen over the next 60-70 years I'm going to live in!!!
Will N/S Korea unite? Will a superpower engage in a war with another? This story is one I'm interested to see unfold. Will the US actually get out of it's debt problem?
I think the human race will go extinct at the hands of itself or due to the planet no longer being able to support us all and we die out due to conditions being so bad and unsustainable for human life. I think that will actually happen before the sun asplodes and massacres us all.
Human race will end, because humans will devour all food available on the planet, or somehow destroy capability to make it.
I can already see it with my minds eye: -The bigger and bigger human population gets, the more strained will the food producing capabilities be -Sooner or later world food production cannot support any more population. Worldwide unrest, possibly wars because of it. -Instead of just dying out when consumption surpasses production, humans will continue to eat and devour every single thing left, until there is nothing to produce from. -And so human race will die.

Fat snubby nosed aliens come and start abducting everyone and destroying everything. First to go are the sky scrapers, just for their entertainment, probably in new york, because aliens just seem to hate new york. They will slowly spread over the rest of the world, destroying, pillaging and abducting as they go.
Men will be taken up for experiments and to pitted against each other in arenas not unlike those of ancient rome. Later, the women, especially the hot ones, will be taken for the aliens pleasure.
However, I will hear of these abominations stealing all our hot women, and show up 12 years later to save the day.
