Besides that, nothing comes to mind. Nuclear weaponry will never be enough to wipe out the world, especially due to the fact that no nation, rogue or otherwise, could launch even one ballistic missile without it being tracked by NORAD, let alone to 100+ it would take to throw us back into the dark ages. | ||

It would take so many nuclear weapons to wipe everyone out, I'm not sure it's feasible even in theory. As far as catastrophes go, even major climate changes would not wipe humanity out. We have the power to adapt, even if a certain % of humanity would perish because of famine or other such problems. As far as super-virii go (as in, untreatable and unstoppable, which in theory is possible if a virus or bacteria evolves continuously to defend against everything we throw at them, up to a point where even substances that destroy our own bodies would not harm them), I think people would just adapt their way of live to avoid it as much as possible, even if it required drastic measures... I don't think the entire world population could ever be taken out by disease. An event on a much larger scale (meteors, sun exploding, galaxies colliding) should be a safe bet though, as I doubt humanity will ever discover a way to travel space in extreme distances in a way to avoid such events by migrating around the universe. I feel such events are the only ones we can't adapt to at all. Even if everyone on the planet collaborated on a space colonization program, it's simply unfeasible because of our life span vs the distance and speed we can reach with a space shuttle (and also, a small malfunction could equal the death of the human race, even if we somehow made a gigantic ship to take us abroad). Overall, certain events could lead to mass deaths, but extinction is not something that will happen to humanity in the near future. | ||

The world does not end with humanity. Believe it or not, the world is bigger than us. But anyway, here's a great poem on the topic: Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire.
