A lot of police officers are present outside the embassy right now, and I'd wager the place has been under police surveillance ever since Assange took refuge there. Are police allowed to search a diplomat's car? The extreme underhandedness of the American government in attempting to secure Assange's arrest really is a bit sickening, I must say. I am quoting from above: 3.The premises of the mission, their furnishings and other property thereon and the means of transport of the mission shall be immune from search, requisition, attachment or execution. So, it would be pretty much the same, if the police went into the embassy, or if they got him out of a diplomats car driving to the airport, imho.

Are police allowed to search a diplomat's car? Depends on how far the UK is willing to go. I'd say yes. They wouldn't arrest any of the Ecuadorian officials with him, but Assange wouldn't have any diplomatic immunity that the UK would recognize and there are outstanding warrants for his arrest.

If you listen to the press conference where they announced granting asylum to Assange, Ecuador has done a lot of research and negotiation with the UK, Sweden and US on this matter and they're convinced that this is a political persecution. I would consider that sufficient evidence that there's a conspiracy to get Assange.

Funnily enough, neither of them can project enough power to invade the other though. Locally though, the UK has superior special forces units versus Ecuadorean embassy guards; it won't even be close.

We are disappointed by the statement from Ecuador’s Foreign Minister that Ecuador has offered political asylum to Julian Assange. Under our law, with Mr Assange having exhausted all options of appeal, the British authorities are under a binding obligation to extradite him to Sweden. We shall carry out that obligation. The Ecuadorian Government's decision this afternoon does not change that. We remain committed to a negotiated solution that allows us to carry out our obligations under the Extradition Act. source really britain? you're put BRITISH RIGHTS above HUMAN RIGHTS? and then say you are legally right? what about morally? how could you not respect chinese rights in Ai Weiweis case then? what if china would have answered the same?

Using violence to extract Assange from the embassy would be a really bad decision though. Not even the Chinese government tried to enter the US Embassy to arrest the Chinese dissident Chen Guangchen.

Didn't you know? Everything coming out of far east is communism!!! Just take the recent olympics as an example. When that 16 year old chinese swimmer crushed everyone she clearly cheated. But when Phelps dominated everyone he was just super good.

The power relations between the US and the PRC are way different from the power relations between the UK and Ecuador. China, while a de facto regional hegemon, knows that any potential conflict with the United States, in both hard and soft terms, will be highly damaging, making it against their national interest to do what you suggest to the American embassy. I'm not exactly sure what the calculation behind an assault would entail, but I'm willing to bet the UK feels that it is in their interest to blow off Ecuadorian protests and extraterritorial status to get Assange because there's simply not much downside to it.

I read that the diplomatic pouch thing doesn't work and the only way for him to leave is if they can smuggle him out, or if he is promoted to the Ecuadorian U.N representative so he can travel freely. Anyone know? He could stuck in the embassy for many years but i think it's over now that US and co. can't drag him from one court to the other. Swedish authorities will just start moving the case towards a resolution and at some point at the not far future will just set him free (for now) :p
