Just as a warning, for some of those who seem to be surprised, those tiny earphones with IPods, IPhones and ITouches etc (any MP3 Players), if loud, are one of the best ways to get the ringing.

I've heard the very direct, loud and wide ranging sound is actually on par with burst noise like Gunshots and car accidents.

Of course you can use them, just don't push it.

I have terrible tinnitus in my left ear when I get stressed. My jaw also clenches terribly and I grind my teeth. Makes everything nearly unbearable.

Why wouldn't you just say "MP3 Players" lol?
Do you work for Apple?

It's hell.

And I've had chronic insomnia for years on end, not related to ringing. But- I can mentally couple the 2 and try to imagine- and its not a happy picture.

Acupuncture. Meditation... would be my first line. Even Chiropractors.

Last line would be medication and even surgery.

GL my man and much luv.

edit: It's not ALWAYS hearing loss. It can sometimes just be ringing because of other unknown biological causes. Yes, hearing loss can be ringing. It's the most common. But... ringing is not always hearing loss.

That's a quality response.

You should be able to get a doctor to at least properly identify the problem and its cause relatively cheaply, either way it's worth the money if it's causing you this much distress and you'll be in a much better position to start thinking about what to do next.
Speak properly, and in as few words as you can, but always plainly; for the end of speech is not ostentation, but to be understood.

This is true. The compression of MP3 files, which discard certain frequencies and dynamic range values (volume), result in us turning up the volume of whatever we're listening to because it's quieter and that stuff just ISN'T there (as a result of the compression). That, combined with the direct nature of the earbuds (they are RIGHT there in your ear) can cause long term damage to the ear. Another factor is that usually people listen to them on the street, in a bus, or on a plane, which are all locations with very high background noise. In order for us to hear our music and drown this out, we turn it up even MORE. This is why I only listen on actual headphones or on speakers (I'm going into professional audio so I do all I can to save my ears).

Also: I don't know why more people don't do this, but covering your ears during a fire alarm or when an emergency vehicle goes right by actually helps. Every bit counts, you only get one pair of ears!

I bet its tinnitus, my friend has it pretty bad from visiting too many metal concerts. He says he just learned to live with it and apparently listening to soothing music and sounds help him get sleep much better. Just enough to cover the tinnitus. I have this slight high pitched noise in my ears too but i can only notice it if i concentrate on it.

I have tinnitus but its not from listening to loud music or anything, I have meniere's disease which I didn't treat for a few years and now I have hearing loss. If anyone in this thread gets vertigo AND hearing loss (usually in one ear) go see an ENT and get it checked. Usually if you diagnose it early on you can manage it through diet and not lose any hearing, you can't do caffeine, and salt though =/.

Check Into Trigger Point Therapy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigger_point

Janet Travell, JFK's Doctor used it to cure his back pain. Course then he drove around in a convertable while a crazy guy was around but that porbably won't happen to you.

What what I know about it look into your Sternocleidomastoid (front neck muscle from your sternum to your mastoid behind your ear

http://triggerpoints.net/triggerpoints/sternocleidomastoid.htm

Also your masseter (chewing Muscle)
http://triggerpoints.net/triggerpoints/masseter.htm

Lateral and Medial Pterygoid might also be acting up
http://triggerpoints.net/triggerpoints/lat-pterygoid.htm
http://triggerpoints.net/triggerpoints/medial-pterygoid.htm

There are some books that have been really helpful for my using it
http://www.amazon.com/Trigger-Point-Therapy-Workbook-Self-Treatment/dp/1572243759/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286514058&sr=8-1

Also the Medical Texts if you have some cash to drop
http://www.amazon.com/Myofascial-Pain-Dysfunction-Trigger-Manual/dp/0683083635/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1286514116&sr=1-3

Also there has been a lot of progress trying to convince doctors that it exists. The only issue really is its mostly Massage Therapists who know about it, who doctors tend not to trust.
