The cost of the meal was 25 euros, you're supposed to take the two euros the waiter kept away from the 27, not adding it.

It's obvious that they can't get anything back.
They all paid with a 10 euro bill, so no 5 euros to give back.

I normally don't do this stuff because I suck at anything related to art, but I've felt the mood because I was blown away with how DeMusliM was dealing with that cheese, his micro was almost perfect, and it's still cost him a game, don't think he could have done better, it just seems really hard to stop this kind of cheese, and protoss doesn't even need to micro zealots. Props to DeMusliM and his amazing micro that inspired me to make this

Boss had 5 euros, the waiter had 0, clients had 30. In the end boss had 30 euros, the waiter has 2 and clients have 3 euros. No euros missing! 35 = 35!

Boss and the waiter earned 25 + 2 euros, clients lost 27 euros ( 3x9 ). They are forgetting to mention the boss in the riddle.

You cannot add up the "change (remaining)" In this case, you don't add +2 euros. They have altogether paid 27 Euros for a meal that cost 25, and the waiter kept 2.. If you add up the remaining, the number either becomes bigger or smaller.

The extra euro gets lost in the floating point when dividing. When the boss says "it only costs 25" then they have paid 25/3 (guys) or 8.3333333... at this point.

They paid 8.3333 * to the boss which is 24.9999 (basically 25 Euros)

The two Euros that the waiter stole is 2/3 (guys) = .6666666666

So they paid 8.33333333 + .66666666666 = 8.999999999 each.

8.9999999 is basically 9 Euros. So, 9 * 3 (guys) = 27 then add back in the 3 Euros they got back from the waiter 27 + 3 = 30.

Started with 30 euros... finished with 30 euros.

Now for a funny Math related picture:

the above person kinda missed the point. The interesting part of the riddle comes from the fact that it can all be done practically and with whole dollars.
The three people paid ten dollars each (let's say 10 one dollar bills each). The waiter returned one dollar to each of them. Now the customers had paid 9 dollars each which equals 27. The waiter only kept 2 dollars, so from the perspective of the customers one dollars has disappeared!
In actual fact 25 dollars went to the house 3 dollars back to the customer and 2 to the waiter. So all the money is accounted for. It's obviously not correct to look at what the customers paid PLUS what the waiter kept because it's mixing the two perspectives. it should be 27 MINUS 2 equals 25 which is kept by the house.
The customers don't have 27 dollars they spent it. 25 to the house, and 2 to the waiter.
Cool puzzle.

the way I always viewed it was:
3 Customers start with 10
3 Customers have 0, waiter has 30
3 Customers get 1, waiter keeps 2, cost is 25
The three customers have 3 dollars between them, waiter has 2, bill has 25=30.

yeah that's clearly correct, but the fun comes in refuting the phasing of the riddle. 25+3+2 is not hard math. but you have to say what's wrong with the logic presented in the riddle.

3 x 9 euros = 27
+ 2 in the waiter's pocket
This is wrong, the 2 euros in the waiter's pocket is part of the 27 the customers paid, it isn't added to it. The customers each have 1 euro = 3 x 1 = 3. They payed 27 euros of which 25 goes to the restaurant and 2 to the waiter. 3 euros for each customer, 2 euros for the waiter, 25 for the restaurant, 3+2+25=30. Can we go back to posting funny pictures now?
