I can guarentee with almost absolute certainty that this isn't true. Because your couple of weeks in Korea is so much more experienced than my almost three years of living here.... It is true and no, I was not being sarcastic. Foreign men here can get a lot of grief for going out with Korean women - you just have to look on places like Dave's ESL Cafe to find numerous stories of Koreans harassing foreign men with Korean GFs. Whether all of them are true I can't say, but all the things I wrote about Anti English Spectrum are well documented. Also if you look at any of the areas in Seoul where regular foreigner presence is more visible - places like Itaewon, Gangnam, Samsung and Yongsan you will always see more foreign men with Korean women than the other way round. No, I went all around Seoul and Jejudo with a Korean girl quite often, actually. And I'm a white man, so that checks off your list of requirements for me to be harassed. I never heard anyone say anything, never saw anyone give us strange looks, and never felt anyone treat us weird at all, save one taxi driver who I ended up trying to yell at in Korean (failure but he shut up). Alternatively, I was more often treated poorly and heard 외국사람 everywhere I went when I was alone. NeverGG, if you look anywhere in the world you will more often see a white guy with an asian girl rather than vice versa. In fact it's typically a 10 to 1 chance that the asian person in the couple is the woman, so I don't see how this is relevant to the discussion at all. So yes, I take my real life experience to be more accurate than the stories you've read on some website about how shitty their Korean experiences were. Also consider this: No one is going to write "I went out today and again nothing happened and it was a great experience" so you're most likely only going to read bad experiences. I guess Rekrul could solve this argument pretty easily. -Romance-us- quote Anybody "can get" grief for doing anything. Could you elaborate more on the actual amount of acceptability or unacceptability shown towards a foreign man dating a Korean woman by a native Korean? Because like InControl and Chill stated, I know that at least in the eyes of foreigners that it seems much more "accepted" than "not accepted". You use the Anti English Spectrum as an example, but how exactly large is this group, and how much support does this group receive? In America, you could state something like, "Black men can get a lot of grief for going out, just look at the Klu Klux Klan! They are well documented!", but as an American citizen, I know that the actual influence of and support shown towards the KKK is incredibly small.Last edit: 2010-02-09 04:16:53.[/QUOTE] Rekrul I miss you! keke, uh sorry, to the post! 1. It's mostly white guys going out with Korean girls, by far, in Korea; the white girls who do go out with Korea guys are usually exchange students or doing their graduate work in Korea and they are really just a handful. 2. Anti-English spectrum group does exist, but they are crazy nationalistic kkk type people, not the majority by any means, but they were initiated maybe about 5 years back when the foreign community was getting a bit out of hand, publically, in showcasing their private activities. They still continue to this day with the foriegn community having made public complains to even the internet service/blog provider to have them shut down. But the group was initiated by public outrage. 2.a Foriegn community I mean by a mix of English Teachers and US army personnel (I'd guess about 75/25 cause the US army have their own separate community that the English Teachers don't spill over too) 3. Everyone who posted is actually right, what people don't realize is that Korea is a highly segmented country by area, in one area, interracial relationships are common and don't bat an eye (yongsan, itaewon,hannam,dong-bu ichon, shinchon), other areas it's accepted and the Korean there are 'modern' enough not to care about anyone elses bussiness (gangnam, apgujeong, samsong-dong or most university areas) and there are areas where a white person is more of an attraction (either cause there are no US army bases in the area or its tourist area) like Jeju island which because it is a tourist area you'd be surprise how long their exposure to white foriengers have been. But 10 years ago, those 'modern places' and most of Korea was not that 'modern' and so people would be open in staring with the 'evil eye', yet there are two points here, just cause you don't get a reaction, does it mean that they approve? 3.a For the most part, no, most Korean's do not approve (not that it really matters when there is true love in the air! keke), but whatever distaste a Korean may have for a foriegner, they would actually express it if you were alone WITHOUT a Korean nearby! 3.b. The people or taxi drivers who actually find it 'disgraceful' in their eyes (mostly the uneducated or the nationalistic ones-lots of nationalistic Koreans) would rarely be so stupid to insult a forigner with a Korean girlfriend as they would be concerned about the consequences of the Korean girlfriend. 3.c. If a Korean girl was to go out with a foriegn man, she is already a strong willed or contrarian to our society and will defend her decision and her man to the death (or at least until its time for marriage) and she would likely give the 'insulter' a huge public confrontation and put down their social position (like who the hell are you 'taxi driver' to critize) or just tell em to stuff it. The Korean woman is generally quite protective of their man and more so because in this case the boyfriend is an extension of her own self (its the way Korean's think). 3.d. So most people, nowadays, wouldn't initiate such a random confrontation. But the fact that most foriegners will experience some random forms of discrimination in Korea, such as taxis not wanting to pick you up, especially when its raining (I usually tell my friends to hide while I get the taxi or I stand in front-doesn't work with Giyom and Rek cause they taller than me). So, yes, its is looked down upon by the vast majority of the population to various degrees, but it isn't like mad hatred or anything at this point (but even 10 years ago it would have been significantly more uncomfortable and 15 years ago your girlfriend would have definately been considered a 'whore' if you stepped out of the forienger friendly areas-15 years ago-25 years ago-um watchout for randomly thrown things keke) But Korea has definately changed for the better! So I'd say Chill's comments from experience, Romance-us insight and NeverGG are all correct as Korean's basic characteristic of racism has become more moderated or subversive (keke); they might not say or do, but it doesn't mean they ain't thinking about it. 4. But it needs to be said, that Koreans while are pegged as racists (yes we are),we are ALSO really really friendly and heartwarming/welcoming people, but we simply don't like anyone who isn't Korean, at first. And we don't like other Korean's who aren't from our same area, at first. But, we usually can understand where the person is coming from, eventually, but then can be loving/accepting without reserve. 5. As an aside, most white women who come to Korea are relatively fat to Korean girls and so those women are a turn off (even overseas Koreans tend to look heavy to Korean guys) and they are quite agressive so they simply are not attractive to Korean guys, while Korean girls who do like 'forigeners' its not exactly true statement actually, they usually will like 'white' foriegners opposed to Indians or African descent persons; and for the most part, the ones that hang out in the foriegner areas are less educated or are from less socially elite backgrounds and having a white boyfriend is a good escape from a very oppresive society (as most Korean men they have encountered are the scum of the earth), or, they are educated, studied a foreign language or studied abroad and feel comforatable either way (Korean or foriegner) and the ones you gotta watch out for, they are super hot, learning English, lots of cash, living alone or with girlfriends, charming and are ready to get married and leave Korea asap! They are likely retired high class working girls who have saved a tonne of money and are ready to move overseas and start a new life. And of course, there are just some people who just fall in love! But an unfortuate truth is,most parents of girls who have foreign boyfriends have no idea this is the case; and the more socially elite the girl's family is, the more harder it will be to get married and have the girl's family accept the marriage, in those cases, reconcilation usually occurs after the first baby gets popped out (Korean parents are suckers for babbies!) after being disowned. So in the more upper levels of society, they are very tolerant of appearances but actually more rigid, except if the parents are very internationally travelled and the foriegn boyfriend is willing to be totally Korean (very rare exception though)-better to wait for the baby to be popped out! But, if you speak Korean and have native Korean girlfriends who don't speak English its a totally totally different world as you become like a psudo Korean like Giyom and in some degreee Rekrul (he fights the assimulation, while Giyom is already assimulated kaka). I hope this long post (mine are all long and infrequent-15 a year keke), gives some clarification to all about the situation, but that shouldn't stop you from going out with a Korean girl or coming to Korea, cause at the end of the day, Korean women are really hot and charming and a bit/alot crazy at times and in Korea you can eat BBQ at any time of the day over hot live coals anywhere in the city! Oh and if you cable you can watch Starcraft all day long (not that I'm allowed to anyways). Thanks to all who made comments on my family pic *^^* DOTA 4 LIFE FUCK HON! | ||
