ya in a world of football where coaches are way more likely to be sacked prematurely than too late, domenech still holding his job is amazing. not only has france performed worse than they should in every championship cept 2006, but he's crazy to boot.

Hahah, France really need to sort it out. Reminds me of England pre-Capello

Anelka was not diving dude. There was contact intentional or not, pen or not. It's not my decision, but he didnt dive.
And seriously? ANY TEAM/ANY PLAYER in the world would have acted in the same way.

ya henry looked sincerely shameful about the goal.. im not sure there's a single top player (you can certainly find some, but on the highest level? henry is known as one of the most honest players as it is, and his reputation doesnt get tarnished by this. ) in the world who would tell the referee about the handball in this situation, and i'm not sure it's a really conscious decision when he handballs, more like a reflex.
he'd be remembered as the most mannered player in the world if he did tell the referee, but he'd risk _knocking his country out of the world cup_. that's some pretty damn strong motivation there..

It's the damn World Cup. Anyone would have done it. There is no team/player in the world who would want to miss it.

Yes, I am just so god damn bitter because I have to wait another 4 years to try to see Ireland qualify out of such a difficult group. Getting eliminated by a team I hate (France) on a bullshit nocall handball does not help. FIFA last minute seeding and bias for big teams does not help me either.

Incidents like this make me wonder why FIFA still doesn't allow video refereeing.

While Henry's assist was rotten and disheartening, and I don't really buy that it was a reflex or unconscious reaction, the onus in that situation is entirely on the referees. It's not for the players to police themselves.
It was just maddening because I felt like Ireland played a solid game, and certainly outplayed a French team that didn't even seem particularly concerned about winning. A dispassionate performance, to say the least, but such is life and there's no reason to stay upset about something that will never change.

Hand of God, hand of Henry. Definitely.

Irish supporters have every right to be upset because they were robbed, they wouldn't have a reason to complain if the goal was fair. Bad refereeing can be changed if video technology is introduced.

LOL FIFA and UEFA recaps of the game don't mention anything about the handball.
Five minutes later, France skipper Thierry Henry won the match for the hosts when his angled pass amid a goalmouth scramble was met by the head of Wiliam Gallas. The goal enabled France to qualify and avoid a repeat of their humiliating failure, at the hands of Bulgaria, to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup finals. http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=1136804.html#gallas breaks irish hearts

the last WC Qualifiers games are like Old Trafford in extra time.
i somewhat knew that some referee "mistake" would happen.

What an embarrassment for France. France is supposed to be one of the premier football nations in the world, and then they need this rubbish to get into the world cup. You HAVE to feel sorry for Ireland here, the way France advanced was just a disgrace. It's time for video replays, every other sport in the world is getting them, and in the context of goal/no goal, in/out, handball/no handball, and maybe offsides, it's simply unacceptable to know the mistake happened, and to not be able to fix it.
On the other hand, wonderful for Slovenia. And we all know France will draw some obscure African or Asian side, totally underestimate them, and flub out in the pools. So don't worry too much.

this is pretty much it. the thing is, all players constantly feel that there are loads of decisions that go against them. thus, when the referee wrongly decides something to their favour, it just feels like they're evening things out.
there are some examples of players policing themselves and telling the referee when they wrongly get favoured by the referee - fowler deliberately missing a penalty after telling the referee it wasnt a penalty and the referee not reverting his decision is one, and that's awesome. but I can't recall a single incident where a player did that when the goal was of actual importance.

Okay, the anelka penalty was a penalty and it wasn't called... and the henry pass was a handball and wasn't called. I'm not saying a bad call rules out another bad call, but more like, they were unlucky although they had the opportunity to finish the game MORE than twice and didn't. At the end, they weren't able to finish the French and lost.
