The problem with competitive TF2 is more about the lack of community and interest...ESEA TF2 is small and (arguably) dying, etc. It's not really about the items since for the most part (except things like the scout's really random pistol) are okay. Competitive TF2 is mostly just about vanilla weps with a few exceptions like kritzkrieg.

I used to play it competitively... left for LoL and then eventually SC2, came back recently and felt like the guy from Shawshank Redemption just because of all the items and hats and shit O___O
that's not to say it's a bad game now, I just haven't kept up with it at all and it gets updated so frequently.

I've had some decent comp experience in the past, would be more than happy to help some nubs out if anyone felt like playing, though I haven't touched the game in a long, long time. Either that or pub stomping with some vets would be alright.
While I'm here I figure I might as well mention http://tf2lobby.com/ It's basically a third party scrim lobby that throws you together with randoms and connects you to a private server for some 6 on 6 competitive formatted play. It's not as clean as playing with your own team or whatever in a scrim, but it's better than pubs imo.

Add to the fact that most of the top players are complete dickheads
ESEA had its largest turnout this season IIRC, so it's not necessarily dying but its still small. Only ~100 teams for a game that supposedly has 50k+ players a day.

I just got the game downloaded today so I'm totally new to it but I play Sudden Attack a ton and am great with m4 and TRG as sniper so I've only been trying out sniper so far in TF2, gameplay will take some getting used to but I really like it so far.
